chinese names

auli’i cravalho’s name

for those of you having difficulty pronouncing her name, the apostrophe in her first name is not actually an apostrophe! its a bit of hawaiian punctuation called an ʻokina. because hawaiian tends to be very vowel-heavy and can have multiple consecutive vowel sounds with no consonants dividing them, the ‘okina serves an indicator of a pause between vowel sounds (a glottal stop if we’re being technical).

so auli’i would be pronounced like OW-LEE-EE rather than OW-LEE. cravalho is likely an anglicization of the portuguese surname, carvalho, which makes sense because hawaii has a pretty large portuguese population. (for example, i have a friend who’s last name, loui, is a messed up attempt at anglicizing the chinese name, liu).

usually the ‘okina is removed from hawaiian words outside of hawaii to avoid confusing people who are unfamiliar with the language’s conventions. for example, hawaii would actually be hawai’i, ohana would be ‘ohana, and luau would be lu’au (there’s actually supposed to be a straight bar above the first ‘u’ called a kahako, which lengthens and emphasizes the vowel, but im too lazy to try to format that lol).

and that concludes this linguistic primer on hawaiian punctuation, have a great day y’all.

Although WWC shares resources when we can and bring some to the table ourselves, we don’t exist to seek outside sources for one’s writing; this is ultimately the writer’s job. Even so, we’re more than happy to offer guidance on the What, Where and How of doing research for your inclusive writing.

Guideline: how to? Chinese names

Since some people also have Chinese muses, I figured it would be nice and useful to make a small guide in how to use Chinese names and how to address people with Chinese names.
Let me show you how with some examples.

- If you have someone named Zhang Yixing. His name in characters would be 张艺兴, this is only important to people who actually feel like using it this way so you might want to check up on that.
The “Zhang” in the name is actually (like in Korean) the surname so “Yixing” is his first name. Now you might notice that Yixing exists out of two parts Yi and Xing. I know with names like this, people usually use Yixing, instead of Yi Xing, which is good because you’re doing it the correct way!
- Another example. If you have someone named Luo Zhixiang, be sure to refer to his first name as Zhixiang, not Zhi Xiang, referring to the previous example. I’m not sure why people aren’t being consistent in writing the names haha.
- Also, if you have the name Luhan, please know it is actually Lu Han, since Lu is the surname here.
- The last thing I want to point out is that Chinese people love to use nicknames. Especially ones with the word ‘xiao’ (小)which means small or little.
If you have a muse called Xiao Wu (like I do), then know it is a nickname. Xiao here doesn’t really have a meaning if you use it as a name without any context or knowledge. You’ll have to use the full nickname Xiao Wu to actually address the other. Also, only use their nickname when they want you to. Ask them how they like to be called, perhaps they don’t feel a bond with you yet and they want you to use their full name. In Xiao Wu’s case, that would be Jin Ensheng.

I know this may all seem confusing but it somehow makes sense. Believe me when I say it confused me at the start too but people with Chinese muses or who are part of the Chinese culture will very much appreciate you using the names the right way! I hope this was useful to you ^^

Reblog to help others out too!

everything was going too well, right
what would be milo’s answer now?

presenting Lee Myung Wook, dog lover, single figure skater, Mamoru’s other best friend and son of Phichit and Seung Gil. He’s mostly like Phichit but he has the best bitch resting face of them all (you won’t believe it giving how bright is his smile)

Daniel De La Iglesia (or 季静洋Ji Jing Yang, peaceful ocean, I am still unsure if choosing his american name or chinese name), is Leo and Guang Hong’s firstborn and first of five siblings and Myung Wook’s almost boy–best friend.

Nü gui (女鬼) is a vengeful female ghost in Chinese mythology. She is depicted with long hair while wearing a white dress.

In some folklore, this ghost is the spirit of a woman who committed suicide while wearing a red dress. Usually, she met with some injustice when she was alive, such as being wronged or sexually abused and thus she returns to take her revenge. A tabloid story tells of a funeral ceremony where family members of a murder victim dress her in red, hoping that her spirit will return to take revenge on her murderer. The color red symbolizes anger and vengeance in the context of ghosts.

On the other hand, some ancient folk tales tell of beautiful female ghosts who seduce men and absorb their yang essence or sometimes kill them. This type of female ghost is likened to the succubus.

I wish more people talked about East Asian representation in the Harry Potter books and movies. All we got was Cho Chang from the original series who everyone hates for some reason; and Ya Zhou in Fantastic Beasts, which literally means “Asian” in Chinese. Jo literally named the only East Asian character in Fantastic Beasts “Asian”. Not to mention, they’re both Chinese, so are the only East Asian wizards Chinese then?

So I was researching chinese names and learnt that Lan Fan can mean “Orchid blossom” or cold rice, the two parts of her name when separated mean different things

Lan can mean “blue”, “display” or “orchid blossom”

Orchid blossom? so what does the “Fan” part of her name mean?

Simple, Fan can mean “sail” like my ship “ordinary/common”, “prosperous” or “role model” (I also saw that it can mean lethal but lets be real, that was a western names site)

Or her name could be in reference to the Fan’s who trace their origin back to Emperor Yao, a ruler who was extolled as a morally perfect and intelligent sage-king, whom served as a model to future Chinese monarchs and emperors and was often spoken of highly by ancient Chinese figures, including his successors as well as historical figures such as Confucius, and whom according to legend ascended the throne at age 20. He is also known as the Yellow Emperor.

Arakawa you sure did your research.
