The Chinese merganser, called 秋沙鸭 (pinyin: Qiū shā yā) in Chinese and literally means “autumnal sand duck) is an endangered species that only has about 200 to 250 pairs remaining in the wilds of China.  It is also known as the "scaly-sided merganser” and breeds in southeastern Russia and China’s Changbai (长白山; pinyin Chángbáishān) mountains.  These Chinese mergansers were photographed recently on the Xiu River in Jiangxi province.
