‘House with Attic’ series 1: groups

He Duoling is a prominent contemporary Chinese oil painter with a broad range of influences from impressionism and Pre-Raphaelitism to Andrew Wyeth, in a style moving from realism to a more free-form and poetic manner. In my opinion, one of the most ‘complete’ figurative painters from China.

He’s House with Attic series is a set of 44 paintings to accompany Anton Chekhov’s short story usually titled An Artist’s Story or The House with the Mezzanine in English. The choice of an impressionistic style to the works is presumably a deliberate evocation of Chekhov’s period, and He explores the space and psychology between the characters with a striking ease.


From her twenties until the end of her life, O’Keeffe studied and admired various aspects of Asian culture. Many of her abstracted landscapes, such as this bird’s eye view of a river, show her interest in the calligraphic line and flattened perspective of Japanese and Chinese painting. // Posing for the photographer Bruce Weber in 1984, O’Keeffe fused Eastern and Western influences by pairing a kimono with a vaquero hat. The swirl of her “GOK” brooch, designed by her friend Alexander Calder, echoes the larger form of her own sculpture behind her. // This kimono, a padded men’s garment in striped gray silk with a black collar, suited her lifelong taste for clothing that was practical, androgynous, and monochromatic, while also reflecting her fascination with Asian culture.

I have seen comments in the Shangri-La MV, which are summed up to this: “The music have Chinese influence” and that is incorrect. The music is based on the traditional Korean sound. 

NO, there is no Chinese instrument there either. The instrument you hear is called 가야금 (Gayageum), it’s a traditional Korean instrument. (x) (You can hear some of that instrument here)

So, no, the music doesn’t have any Chinese influence.

News from Shinobi no Kuni - 4/25/17

Arashi’s Ohno Satoshi choreographed his own Avoid the Long Spears Dance like movements for his character Shinobi Mumon. During the fight scenes between protagonists the Shimoyama Brothers, Mumon had to fight with the enemy spears being thrust at him. According to Director Nakamura, Ohno created his own moves in 30 minutes. So who wants to guess who or which Chinese martial art stars influenced these moves? Jacky Chan? Bruce Lee? Yuen Woo Ping (of Matrix fame)

Quan Zhi Gao Shou

People are calling Quan Zhi Gao Shou the future of anime and superior to Japanese producer led animation but, my dudes, it’s just the same level yo.  Y’all focusing so much on the pretty fight scenes that you’re ignoring the massive budget and time cuts elsewhere: awkward 3d models for bg characters, NUMEROUS reused bits of animation within the fights, flipped animation, wide shots with FX and smoke to cover up what would otherwise have to be animated, good ol gainax mouth hiding, overuse of still shots for a quarter second longer than is appropriate, etc.  This does not make Quan Zhi Gao Shou inferior to Japanese anime; it’s just more of the same tricks with prettier snippets of fight animation backed by its obvious corporate backers. 

There’s a reason this is one of the few anime that can have an uncensored McDonald’s logo: they literally advertise McDonalds’ food, call it delicious in dialogue, and make shilling for McDonald’s a “desirable character” intro.  The plot has actually stopped to advertise McDonalds.  It’s being done very well and seems in character as it’s written, but you have to be blind to not realise that these corporate sponsorships (including from drink makers and other entertainment companies) are what’s allowing the level of animation you admire.  The cans that are left blank are cans that have ad space not yet paid for.  Yes, this is indeed the future of anime.  Just in a different way.

However, Quan Zhi Gao Shou is doing one thing much better than anime I have watched recently: character writing.  You can still see the old tropes in it, but each character trope is softened by “reality,” thereby bringing it back closer to the realistic character depictions that started each trope way back in the day.  Do we have an MC who is an omnipotent pretentious ass? Hoo boy yes we do, but he’s shown on screen to have earned his skill as a 25 year old professional with 10 years of experience in his job instead of a miracle teenager.  Do we have a red haired tsundere who is sharp with the MC?  Yeah, but she’s sharp with him because he’s a pretentious ass, and she’s giving him a job and a place to stay so he could maybe show her a little more respect plus attention to her feelings.  None of which are romantic.  Do we have a kawaii quiet girl?  Indeed, but she’s not crushing on the MC at all and is driven by her own search for challenge in combat and life instead of being a wallflower.  Do we have an idiot brawler boy?  Yes and he is good and perfect and you will not bad mouth my son.  Do we have a girl next door type with long hair and a yamato nadeshiko grace?  Yes, there is a girl fitting that trope, in being the oldest female companion of the MC, but she’s a fellow professional who didn’t try to date him and whose skills he calls on with the shared bond of friendship and years fighting together.  Do we have a calm and calculating nemesis who has a power limiter on otherwise he’d be too awesome?  We have one, and he’s being fleshed out as a man who has sacrificed himself for his teammates, and he’s opposing the MC not for his own personal gain and glory, but to help his team and to rekindle his suppressed sense of battle style and joy in combat.  Do we have a god damn rookie hunter?  Yep, more than one, and one of them is in the middle of a redemption arc which is super rare for that character type.

Mmm, that character development.  Mmm, that main character who has finished puberty and has an adult life.  Mmm, that worldbuilding that allows so many little tropes and even advertising to be believable in context.  MMM, that lack of a harem thus allowing female characters to be humans.  This is what Japan needs to take a good long stare at.  Free yourself from tropes or break them.  Think hard about your worldbuilding so that you can explain each character’s actions without an asspull and so that the viewer is immersed without asking too many questions because you’ve already answered them.  Try not to do it with so much sideline coach babble and onscreen text explanations like Quan Zhi Gao Shou does, but we’ll start where we can.  I hate to be saying this, but even Quan Zhi Gao Shou’s in-character McDonalds advertisements enhance its world since they come in the context of quickly snagged unhealthy gamer fuel or corporate sponsorships aimed for by characters to supplement their income.  (sort of like tiger & bunny)

Back to ragging on Quan Zhi Gao Shou though: it suffers from an editing style common to many mainland Chinese films since 2005 or so, where characters speak very fast and the cuts move likewise.  This tapered off significantly after episode 6, allowing for more still shots (usually in order to save on animation though) but I can still feel this directorial influence.  It takes a little getting used to if you’re more acclimated to Japanese or Hong Kong editing, or even if you’re accustomed to the equally fast paced and jarring dialogue/cuts pace of American output which is yet different in exact style.  I’d say that fast American editing is influenced by actual film trailers and advertisements, whereas mainland Chinese editing is influenced by Hong Kong mo lei tau slapstick.  They’re both trying to pack a lot of content into small packages, but mo lei tau has always had more of a stream of consciousness feel to its joke pace which is carried into these new editing styles.  I’m not an editing expert, mind you; this is just me as a layman analysing.  Chinese fast editing makes me want to take a hold of a sleeve, carefully remove a hand from its copy of Maya, and gently say “please, calm down, your effects are pretty and I want to hear your story but I also want to rest in emotional moments to allow them to impact me.”  American fast editing makes me want to take a hold of a sleeve, body slam the editor, and shout “STOP IT. PUT THESE SHOTS IN ORDER.” while stealing their palette of film filters forevermore before the whip crack from Johnny Test can hurt me again.  (johnny test is a canadian show btw but it still suffers from horrible editing)

Also I’d prefer Quan Zhi Gao Shou dubbed into Cantonese because then I could more or less follow it without subtitles taking up too much of the screen.  My Mandarin is terrible.  (wow watch me ask for the moon right lol) Chinese is not a language; it’s a language family thx.  I’m aware that this Cantonese preference is 100% due to me growing up hearing it.  Humans tend to prefer the familiar and I guess I’m a scrub.  At least I’m not asking for it to be dubbed into Superior Harmonious Japanese Ohhhh like so many weirdos in the comments section do though… chill, y’all: it’s a Chinese anime so it’s going to be in Mandarin…i s2g…

So all in all, I give a positive rating to Quan Zhi Gao Shou!  It has me wanting to see the MC and his companions succeed.  None of the characters annoy me.  This is rare.  If you ragged on SAO or Familia Myth in the past, give Quan Zhi Gao Shou a try to see an MMO setting done in a mature manner and a modern context.  If you don’t like anime based on games, you’ll want to give Quan Zhi Gao Shou a pass though, as gaming knowledge and the pro e-games corporate world are integral to its plot.  But yeah: pleasantly surprised.

What Ethnicity is Lady Shiva?

Every once in awhile a post pops up on tumblr discussing at length what ethnicity Lady Shiva is, mostly in deference to what ethnicity that makes Cassandra Cain. This is not a call-out post, but rather a compilation of facts and my interpretations. I’ve done this before, but the post is now lost to the vast expanse of the internet. It’s worth typing up again.

Lady Shiva has suffered through the years as being ambiguously Asian with enough controversial and circuitous backstories that we are provided with both an abundance and lack of an answer. In order to help you all out, I’m just going to provide a case-by-case analysis on Shiva’s appearances and outfits in order to discern her ethnicity. Associated panels posted below; special thank to @judgeanon for reading through this. 

TLDR; Lady Shiva was created specifically as a mixture between different Eastern cultures to act as a foil to the more traditionally American heroes. She has been portrayed with mainly Japanese and Chinese influences, but also importantly Southeast Asian, Korean and South Asian references. I firmly believe Lady Shiva is Chinese, but there is evidence to be argued for each and every one of the ethnicities/regions listed above. (My headcanon, what I believe to be the most probable backstory she has can be found by searching ** in this extremely long post.)

Note: being Chinese is not an ethnicity, but rather a nationality. I’m using the main ethnic group in China, the Han, and the word Chinese interchangeably. That being said, there has never been any indication that she is or is not Han vs any other ethnic group native to China.

the destruction and dominance of north america by the old world was inevitable by the flat fact that the american civilizations were not only going through a dark ages (the north american empires nation states of the mississippi basin had long collapsed and reverted to semi agricultural or forager status before settlers or their diseases arrived) but the societies that were around and in the midst of a relatively highly advanced state in mesoamerica (mexica/aztec; which were experiencing a golden era) and north south america (inca) were all still at a level of being akin to the development status of the mesopotamian kingdoms several thousand years ago. It was like if the spanish were to encounter and summarily mollywhop nebuchadnezzar’s babylon. But Babylon at least had bronze weapons, the best the aztecs could offer were axes with volcanic glass blades.

The aztecs couldve resisted the spanish though, but their culture and reaction to the invading spanish fucked them royally, as they saw they were literally a force of their god

and thats not even unique to the americans, the europeans and christians of the old world reacted the same way when 200 years earlier, a similarly, insanely advanced and merciless empire bound for conquest rolled out of the superior society basket of china and swiftly brought ruin to everyone else because they found it their religious destiny to spread their domain over the world. The muslim world was so THOROUGHLY ravaged at the height of it’s own golden era that most historians believe it still hasn’t recovered.

the white man’s world of Europe was literally 10 years away from being reduced to the same fate north america had been, when it’s best armies - the largest fielded since the roman empire - were completely smashed in poland and hungry as they desperately tried to fight back subotai’s horde. The christians were certain these were the endtimes because the tatars, or rather, the mongols were unstoppable. They reacted as such, in disarray and in total fear and capitulation.

The mongols were so effective and powerful that they conducted warfare against their opponents as if they were literal livestock to be rounded up and slaughtered. The Chinese fell, the rising powers and old powers of the muslim world fell, and eastern europe was completely ravaged by a mere scouting force of several thousand horsemen that earned little more than two lines of “we checked this place out and returned” in the mongol historical record.

After the main force arrived to smash the collective forces of all of europe in legnica and mohi, there was nothing to impede their advance toward atlantic europe, and envoys of the pope and the western kingdoms made it known that conquest was merely years away.

except these mongol army decided at the last minute to turn around and ENTIRELY return to mongolia because the great khan died and everyone was obliged to be present for the new khan’s ascent to power. That was the literal 1 in a million chance that saved western europe. The total apocalyptic wasteland in the middle east (that europe surely wouldve experienced too) left by the mongols helped pave the way for western europeans to spread their influence, now suddenly aware of and curious to what lay beyond their known universe now that a massively powerful, advanced society exploded out of the far fringes of that and nearly destroyed them. The age of exploration began.

like we are living in the alternate history timeline where europe achieved dominance rather than asia, particularly because of a single, freak, sudden death.

it would be like if hernando cortez arrived at the fringes of mexico and began his conquest of the aztecs and then, suddenly, died, and the expedition returned to the carribean and sailed back to spain. The aztecs suddenly, aware of what NEARLY wiped them out, begin to seek abroad and understand a broader world that nearly wiped them out.

id like to believe most alternate universes of human history are where europe was conquered by asia. Imagine if western europe were as chronically impoverished as eastern europe and culturally influenced by chinese culture (mongols would go on to assimilate into settled chinese societal norms)

but yea, if not yuro poors, the asian societies wouldve rolled into and ravaged the new world. yuropoors got a lucky break and were spared the least scathed group of people from the mongol wave.


The Flowery Years (花样的年华) performed by Zhou Xuan (周璇).

Featured in Wong Kar-wai’s famous 2000 film In the Mood for Love and the soundtrack to his short film of the same name, The Flowery Years was originally sung by iconic actress-singer Zhou Xuan of the “Solitary Island” cinematic period. It was composed as a homage to nostalgia and bygone happiness and as a metaphor for the dangers of then Japanese-occupied Shanghai.

Nicknamed the “Golden Voice” (金嗓子) for her lilting high-pitched melodies, Zhou Xuan was a prolific artist with a discography of 200+ songs and appearances in 40+ films. Sold into another family at the age of three by a relative addicted to opium, Zhou was adopted before debuting onstage at age thirteen. Upon passing away in an asylum following a nervous breakdown at just thirty-nine years old, Zhou left a rich and controversial legacy. Her surviving family members created conflicting accounts of her life, revealing details of their complex relations with Zhou in public disputes, and battled over the legalities of her fortune. Nonetheless, Zhou’s life has been adapted into biographies and television series, representing her lasting influence on Chinese media well into the present day.

This is a PSA to bellarke fan fiction authors: since we’re becoming more and more aware of the usage of the Filipino culture/traditions/myths/etc. in fan fiction with regard to Bellamy or just in general, I would like yall to know that there are Filipinx people here on tumblr that you can go to if you need to ask about anything Filipino.

There’s me, Jazz (hooksandheroics). I’m a college student studying Philippine Arts, majoring in Cultural Heritage and Arts Management. I have fair knowledge on Filipino mythology, pre- and proto-history, the use of Baybayin (ancient Filipino system of writing), and language. A little bit of music, folk dances, and textile.

There’s also Cam ( @cachekakusu ) an immigrant currently residing in California in the US, can help with insight on living in the Ilocos province and language and immigrant experiences living in the US. 

There’s Kaye ( @misterrsulu )  she worked in heritage tourism and community development, can provide insight on living in Manila and language.

There’s Allison ( @wellsjahastan ) she lives in Australia, can help with culture things as well, although not fluent in Tagalog, she has knowledge on Filipino folk dances, took Southeast Asian studies and did her thesis on colonialism in the Philippines, as well as looking at the influence of Chinese culture and differing conceptions of Filipinos being classed as Asians vs Pacific Islanders.

My Top 10 Favorite Animated Opening Theme Songs

My buddies did a list of favorite original songs from animated shows. I haven’t because it would take a while. Until then, here’s something else. I did put a few rules for myself on this on. NO anime openings. NO English dub opening songs (sorry Pokemon). Lyrics or instrumental don’t matter, but the songs have to be so good I’d want to listen to them on my music player.

10. “Judo Flip” The Boondocks

I loved The Boondocks. I also loved the music in this show. It was mostly done by the artist Asheru. It was fresh, hip and soulful. This opening lets you know that you’re dealing with someone who has been enlightened by their struggles. 

9. “The Chosen One” American Dragon Jake Long

Listening to Dante Basco freestyle is both great and hilarious. I like both versions, so they share this spot. Pop punk with a smidge of Chinese influences and you got yourself a cool theme song.

8. “What’s New, Scooby-Doo?” What’s New, Scooby-Doo?

I love pop punk. I love pop punk! Simple Plan is a long time name and they made an upbeat, lively theme into the Scooby-Doo lineup. Think of it as a updated version of the original show.

7. “It’s Ladybug!” Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir

Yeah, it’s kinda campy and silly but so is the show. The theme lets Ladybug and Cat Noir share the spotlight and paints the show in your mind perfectly

6. “We are the Crystal Gems” Steven Universe

I never get tired of hearing this song. All the actors sing beautifully. Optimism and harmony. What more can you ask for?

5. “In the Loud House” The Loud House

I love pop punk. I grew up with it, and I still like it today. This song is as energetic as the show itself. It fits and the theme of family is still there. 

4. “A World Without Danger” Code Lyoko

The show is fine. The theme is uplifting to me. Filling me with hope and optimism. The idea of a bright future and that electronica sound is fantastic. I know it’s too corny for some, but sometimes I really need that optimism in my life.

3. “He’s Iron Man” Iron Man: Armored Adventures

I’m going to be honest I don’t really like this show that much. Major problem? It’s boring. Plain and simple. The premise isn’t super great either. Tony Stark as a teenager? Forget it. But the theme is a riffing good time. Rock with the little bits of electronica to throw in the tech influence and you’ll be cheering for everyone’s favorite jerk with a heart of gold. Just not the kid in the show.

2. “Spectacular!” The Spectacular Spider-Man

My favorite of all the Spider-Man cartoons, and that’s because I grew up loving the 1994 series. It’s not nostalgia. It’s my lifelong hero being perfected. The theme is catching and creative, not relying on previous themes. I jam out to this song, throwing my hands in the air saying “spectacular” over and over. 

1. “Fight As One” Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes

You hear this theme and you know it’s ass kicking time. A rock tune that gets you pumped to save the world. When the world is in despair, you put your cape on and fight. Because if we can’t save the world, you can bet your ass we’ll avenge it.

The fictional country of Xing in Fullmetal Alchemist is heavily inspired by the real-life country of China. From the weapons, food, flora, fauna, clothing, architecture and art, we can see the Chinese influence.

Xing is a country made of 50 clans, ruled by an Emperor. Similarly, China is a country made of 56 different ethnic groups, and had a monarchy for thousands of years until the end of the Qing dynasty in 1912. In Fullmetal Alchemist, we know three of the clans: Yao, Han, and Chang. The Yao (瑶族)is an acutal ethnicity in China that lives in the South and Southwest, with a population of 2 million. The Han (汉族)  is also an ethnicity, who are the majority of the Chinese, with a population of 1.2 billion and making up 92% of China’s population. The Chang clan is fictitious, however, from the Chinese translation, the clan’s name is “张”, a common Chinese last name, commonly transliterated as Zhang.

The form of alchemy, called alkahestry, in Fullmetal Alchemist is also likewise based on Chinese alchemy. Chinese alchemy is similar to Western alchemy as both seek to create gold from common base metals and finding the elixir of life. The elixifir of life was thought to be created from gold and cinnabar (mercuric sulfide). There is also a focus on herbal and medicinal treatments in Chinese alchemy.

Other forms of Chinese culture influencing the country of Xing is Ling’s dao sword, Xiao Mei the panda (pandas are only found in China), and Fu and Lan Fan’s masks, which resemble the masks used in Beijing Opera.

Zen is a branch of Mahayana Buddhism closely identified with Japan although it is practiced all over the world. It originated in China where it is known as “Chan Buddhism”.  Zen stresses personal attainment of enlightenment and does not rely upon the ancient texts.

This is the Zen Master D.T. Suzuki. If he looks familiar it is because he was one of the models for Yoda in the Star Wars Films. George Lucas was a Great admirer of Master Suzuki. 

Zen was heavily influenced by Chinese Taoism and reflects the minimalist Japanese aesthetic. Zen is reductionist in the sense that it sees enlightenment not as something to be gained but something to be regained having been lost. So, Zen is about removing preconceptions more than adding knowledge.

Zen meditation is called “zazen”. In zazen one is seated upon a mat or a cushion usually in the half lotus position and one focuses on the breath or the energy place just below the navel. One does not so much “quiet” thought or stop thought as one is aware of the stream of thought and allowing them to rise and then pass through.
