chibi-trunks

  • Vegeta: Trunks, what is going on? Get down from there.
  • Future Trunks: This is mine.
  • Vegeta: I don’t understand.
  • Future Trunks: Chibi Me gets a childhood, a dad, a real family, AND a basketball hoop? No. I at least get the hoop I’m taking it with me.
  • Vegeta: Look, just come down and talk to me.
  • Future Trunks: Why? Why should I? You’re lame, OK? You’re just some lame suburban dad.
  • Vegeta: Why does that make you so mad?
  • Future Trunks: Because if you were gonna be some lame suburban dad, why couldn’t you have been that for me?!

Trunks look older in episode 69, whether there is time skip or just animation angle. How do you wish present Trunks will be when he grows up? since future Trunks is popular, Toei could make him like his future counterpart, but he will end up like GT Trunks (without the angsty).

I kinda skipped episode 68 due to NTOP focus. But I did see the preview for next week and I too thought that glimpse of Trunks made him seem a little older. But like you said, animation style, angle, and even just the change in clothes could all be to blame. Is there gonna be a time skip? I heard rumor that there would not be, because Toriyama regretted aging everyone up so much in the final episode of DBZ? But that’s just stuff I have heard. I have no sources. But if that is true we are probably not gonna get a time skip any time soon. Lets hope that’s not the case and we get about 6 months? It would be enough time to age the kids’ character models up and change their clothes and have Bulma finish out a yet announced pregnancy and have a baby in her arms without any trouble.

But now, what do I want Trunks to grow up as? Well, lets just agree here that NO ONE liked GT Trunks? Like, some people chose to be tolerant of that late-term-abortion out of their steadfast devotion to the character and desperate need for content? But lets be real, hardcore AND casual fans as a whole rejected that complete mess. Just, WHY!? I think Toriyama took notes.
I think Kid Trunks was set on the path of having a comfortable life and therefore could choose a life of leisure rather than that of a warrior (GT) but with his encounter with Future Trunks put a stop to that. Little Trunks was extremely impressed by how powerful his older self was. Cheered for himself when sparring against Goku, complementing himself, looking up to himself like an older brother, and even scolding himself for not living up to what he believed was a Saiyan Warrior standard of behavior when Big Trunks was broken down and sad. Nothing like SEEING what your hard work can amount to being to inspire and motivate you, right? Also, as Adult Trunks left, Little Trunks shouted he would keep training to be strong like him, which I think is hugely important. Trunks, without Vegeta’s influence, is taking his training seriously. That’s key. We know Vegeta would want Trunks to train. He has such pride in his boy, but he has taken a turn to be a little protective of Trunks, refusing to allow his son to fight Buu and keeping him out of the major conflicts of Super. It’s like Vegeta wants a strong son, but doesn’t ever want to put his son in danger. It’s like owning a high speed race car and never taking it out of the garage bc it might get a scratch. Oh Vegeta. Such a daddy.

I think Kid Trunks might actually develop his own angst (the kid is just prone to it) and possibly resent his father for trying to keep him safe and not let him fight even tho they both are well aware of his potential. He will feel like Vegeta is purposefully holding him back. Throw in that teen angst of “you just don’t want me to be stronger than you!” type of blow up, striking a nerve with Vegeta because that is EXACTLY why Vegeta resented Future Trunks when he first showed up, I think that would be an awesome dynamic to have play out, ironically all over again. Vegeta grappling with his love and protection of his son, his pride in having a strong independent son, but that lingering feeling of DOES he resent his son and fear he would somehow surpass him again?

And then we have a whole new Trunks with his own angst, who trains and is strong, but also is a little spoiled by the good life he has had.

That’s an option I had bouncing around my head, at least. :)
