Roses are red, Violets are blue
I suck at poetry, What about you ?
Two lines. That’s what Peeta finds under the door of his bakery, early, one morning of March.
No name, no signature.
Just black ink on the paper. Cursive writing, no embellishments, nothing to point out who wrote it.
Two lines. That’s all.
Those two lines carried Peeta all through his day, his thoughts going from wondering who could have sent it to thinking it must have been a mistake. Or maybe intended for Rue, the shy teenager who worked after school to help him.
Definitely, it was for Rue. He would give her the message the next day.
Cherries are red, Irises are blue,
These messages are for you.
Peeta looked at the message, stunned. What the hell was happening?
Who was sending him messages in riddles ? Most importantly, how could he reply ?
An idea formed, making him grab a bit of paper and a pen, quickly scribbling down a few words.
Who are you ? What do you want?
He folded the bit of paper, putting it under the door of the bakery, half expecting it to still be there the next morning.
But another paper was.
Lilies are red, bluebells are blue,
Find my name, and I’ll come for you
He hadn’t talked to anybody
Find my name ? was that a … game ?
The bells over the door made him shove the note in the pocket of his jeans, where it joined the other ones, as a large smile spread across his face.
His favorite customer. The dark haired beauty that bought cheese buns three times a week, settling for cinnamon rolls the other days. His secret crush. Or maybe not-so-secret, as Rue liked to tease him.
They exchanged polite words, as usual, not getting at anything more personal than giving her the change, before she left, glancing at him over her shoulder, like she always did.
Peeta only talked about the first lines to Rue between clients, trying to find out who these could be coming from. He started to worry when he didn’t find another one the next morning. Or the morning after.
They just stopped. As quickly as they had started.
He knew deep down an answer was expected from him. He spent hours looking at the lines on the papers, trying every combination he could find, without success.
Unitl the solution came to him, on a Friday.
“Mr M? Is it okay if I leave a little early? My friend Prim is coming to pick me up…” Rue asked, smiling.
“Prim? That’s her first name?”
“No, she’s Primrose, like the flower …”
He never heard anything else - something had clicked in his mind.
First names. Flowers.
He looked at the papers. It fit. Every single one of them was a flower.
He quickly agreed to Rue leaving, searching for the words he would put on the paper.
Flowers bloom, With the light
I hope I got it right.
He put the folded paper on the floor, under the bakery mat, hoping for an answer.
He wasn’t disappointed.
In the meadow, when the day closes,
Flowers in the wind.
I will come.
In the meadow - he knew exactly where that was.
He could barely wait until it was time to close, until it was time to go.
In the meadow, when the day closes … As he approached the place, he saw a thin silhouette, leaning against the trunk of an old oak tree. Waiting.
In a braid.
With tiny locks escaping. Swaying in the wind, with the dandelions in front of her.
Hi! First of all saw mocking jay and Oh My God! It was fantastic! Just wow! I have a challenge for you, please tell me your top everlark moments in THG CF and Mockingjay. Also do you think their relationship has changed or did they in essence fall in love again? Also I LOVE your blog!!!!! TYSM!
Okay….this is so meaty. Good thing I love you so much too. :)
Favorite Everlark moments:
The Hunger Games
The quote and moment…“It’s not about the sponsors. And it’s not about what will happen back home. And it’s not just that I don’t want to be alone. It’s him. I do not want to lose the boy with the bread.
"Moves into me” kiss. (The hunger one)
When she’s so distraught that she tears his coat.
The bread moment because it’s the foundation to Everlark.
Their interview with Caesar after the Games.
The 100 kisses they don’t show in the movie but are canon.
Nights on the train
Stay with me. Always.
Cheese buns time…She hurts her foot. He carries her up and down the stairs every day. Brings her cheese buns every day. They work on the plant book and shoe ogles him.
The roof…basically an Everlark date
The beach kiss…because, yeah.
The quote “The way we’re wrapped around each other.” Yes, please.
The morning after the beach kiss and how she’s different.
I’ll see you at midnight kiss because it’s bittersweet.
Katniss completely needing/wanting Peeta.
The pearl and its significance.
The “I remember about the bread” conversation that I need to see.
The Always dream coming back to her.
Their small interactions that hurt.
“You’re a painter. You’re a baker.”
Stay with me. Always kiss.
So after….real. OF COURSE!
The epilogue where K&P have toast!babies
I think for sure their relationship has changed, but it’s always been there for both of them. From the moment he threw her the bread to the very end, they’ve always needed and loved each other. It just grew into that. They grew together.
Even as Peeta was hijacked, his love for her trumped all the torture and pain he endured to get back to her. Even as Katniss was at her darkest moment, on trial and alone, wanting to end her life, her love for Peeta kept her going.
I could definitely elaborate, even write a full-fledged essay on this. But I do truly believe that Everlark is a product of two people with a story full of meaning from the very beginning, enduring hardship, complementing one another, completing the other.
So, I was just thinking about all the scenes we didn't get in the movies and had forgotten about the watching the QQ scene. That, along with a better cave acne, cheese buns time, and the rooftop scene really would have put rest to any playing up of a love triangle. I guess I see now why they weren't included. Too bad because it's the combo of all those scenes - along with the beach and resuscitation scenes, that show everlark's first growing together.
Catching Fire is overwhelmingly an Everlark book that sets up Katniss’s feelings in Mockingjay. There are so many things that are missing from the movie that, like you said, would sway everyone to ship Everlark. You put it well when you said it was their “growing together” period.
You know I love Everlark and would want everyone to be on that ship. But I understand movie making and why they do what they do with the “love interests.” Do I want people to ship Everblow? Of course not. Like my husband helped me to see, there are always going to be those who don’t ship with me–however illogical it is. :)
My hope is that they portray the relationships well. By that I mean, adding the nuances that are in the book that pertain to that Everblow kiss in D2. Also, portraying Blowhard’s character that’s supposed to be the opposite of Peeta’s in the end. I also want them to show Katniss’s love for and dependence on Peeta in MJ, which I think they will with the Pearl.
I wish they would’ve just filmed those scenes we miss and made us pay an exorbitant amount for them or posted them online as a series
Everlark Webisodes: Growing Together:
Webisode 1: The Real Cave Scene
Webisode 2: Peeta Tucks Me In
Webisode 3: Ogling Peeta’s Eyelashes While I Eat Cheese Buns
1. That Peeta knew about and loved that Katniss would stare at him while he drew in the family plant book.
2. That they spent a copious amount of time in bed. I feel like so many amazing things happened for them in bed: in the cave, on the train, Cheese Buns Time, and also in their growing back together.
3. That post MJ, they hardly left each other’s side for a long time. They did everything together as a comfort and protection, and eventually grew into a routine that made it so they could be together most of the time.
4. That they had more than two children. I just love the thought of more life for them after the Epilogue that includes children, a mutual desire to build a stronger future for Panem but still respecting their privacy, and a good life with grandchildren and a future together.
When do you really think everlark first had sex? Do you think it was one of those nights on the train or after the rebellion? In rereading the novels, some of the things Katniss says makes me question haha!
Ahhh….the proverbial question:
When did Peeta and Katniss have sex?
This question is right up my alley and I’ve answered it numerous times over the years. So, I hope my answer helps you. :)
I believe Katniss had sex during their growing back together, post-Mockingjay. You’re totally right. So much of the text in THG & particularly CF is so full of juicy goodness that it’s easy to think they had sex. I mean, it is so delightfully hot and sexy. It’s also the main reason I started this blog: to highlight all the wonderful canon.
My reasoning is pretty simple. Katniss feels hunger or sexual desire and attraction, at very specific moments in the books. The first being in the cave:
This is the first kiss that we’re both fully aware. Neither of us hobbled by sickness or pain or simply unconscious. Our lips neither burning with fever or icy cold. This is the first kiss where I actually feel stirring inside my chest. Warm and curious. This is the first kiss that makes me want another.
The second, on the beach:
I feel that thing again. The thing I only felt once before. In the cave last year, when i was trying to get Haymitch to send us food. I kissed Peeta about a thousand times during those Games and after. But there was only one kiss that made me feel something stir deep inside. Only one that made me want more. But my head wound started bleeding and he made me lie down.
The third instance, when they grow back together:
On the night I feel that thing again, the hunger that overtook me on the beach, I know this would have happened anyway. That what I need to survive is not Gale’s fire, kindled with rage and hatred. I have plenty of fire myself. What I need is the dandelion in the spring. The bright yellow that means rebirth instead of destruction. The promise that life can go on, no matter how bad our losses. that it can be good again. And only Peeta can give me that.
So after, when he whispers, “You love me. Real or not real?”
I tell him, “Real.”
Katniss is very specific about when she feels that hunger: the cave, the beach and then the night during their growing back together. I believe that they didn’t have sex until the end of MJ. She specifies those instances because she felt something she never wanted to feel or thought she could feel for another person. So when she does feel that, she explains it so thoroughly.
Are there moments that make us doubt this? Definitely. They both love nights on the train. There are moments in the Training Center that make us wonder. Those were important Everlark moments because they shared an intimacy with one another that they both loved and delighted in, and are honestly the basis for the rest of the relationship they experience. I’ve always called it their courting period: the train, the cheese buns time, the training center, the roof. These were all moments that were exclusively theirs. It wasn’t for the cameras, for Panem or for the Games. It was for them.
Although I don’t believe they had sex until the ending, I do believe they had great physical intimacy. A lot of holding, touching, hugging, snuggling, spooning, hand-holding, looks and smiles. They also had great emotional intimacy. They shared being Victors, a love for their District, moments together getting to know one another. Their lives were completely intertwined. All of this, led to a beautiful relationship that stood up against some serious adversity and one of the main reasons they could grow back together and make a life with each other.
If there's one thing I regret from the series its not being able to know/see the look on Gale's face when Peeta's like: "If it weren't for the baby..." I can only imagine.
Yeah, I agree with that.
I think that’s one thing I miss in Catching Fire as well. The glimpses back at what the rest of Panem would be seeing or hearing and their reactions. I understand that there’s a lot going on in the second arena with the Games, the other Victors, Rebellion & the Everlark happening. Plus, the Games and its political and social representation were already established in the first book.
A reaction from Gale watching the interviews though would have been amazing. Would he have thought it to be true? That there was any validity to it?
After the whipping and their conversation about her staying there to cause trouble, we really don’t hear much from Gale after that. Katniss is injured and then it’s cheese buns time, the QQ announcement, the three Victors train and then the Reaping.
He’s not there taking care of her foot, carrying her up and down the stairs or bringing her coal everyday.
Katniss & Gale have a short conversation before the Reaping about where they would be and she replies, “Hunting. Like every Sunday.” In this same conversation, Katniss thinks, “Even if I had killed Peeta in the arena, I still wouldn’t have wanted to marry anyone.”
SC doesn’t give us more about their relationship in the time that she “chose him” other than they hunt together and he helped them train. I think it’s very telling that the eyelash and hands ogling happens after the whipping.
Definitely no spooning happening with Gale or kissing or arms longing….
At the baby confession, I think Gale would be upset and in disbelief. I don’t think he would automatically think it was a deception. I think he would really think about whether or not that was a possibility. There would be this nagging doubt that Katniss & Peeta had sex at some point.
I think he would go away to the Meadow and wonder why he didn’t get to make babies with Katniss.
Do you think katniss has always loved peeta but she was just confused? Or does she start to love him mid-catching fire/mockingjay?
This is an interesting question.
I think she’s always noticed him, even had feelings for him. When she’s reaped in the first Games, her emotions are so conflicting because she feels trust, affection and attraction to Peeta–but she’s supposed to kill him. So, there’s this tension of wanting to trust him and feeling steadied by him, but she’s really not supposed to. With the tainting of the Games, the manipulation of the audience and sponsors, she’s feeling conflicted as to what she feels towards him. I believe that all her feelings in the arena, in the cave and after the Games are true, real emotions of affection, infatuation and movement towards love.
I believe that she does truly begin to love him in Catching Fire. She’s discovering exactly what that means in the Victory Tour, the Cheese Buns time, the Training Center time (with the roof), all the way up through the Games where she confesses it aloud to him that she needs him. For Katniss, I think that’s more powerful than saying, “I love you.” For her to need someone, she has to express and show vulnerability in love, in trust and in herself. I don’t see her saying that she needs anyone else in her life. Needing someone is also what she truly fears–loving someone so much that if they died, they would leave you broken and affected. She doesn’t want to need someone, but she needs Peeta.
The key moments of Katniss showing she loves Peeta:
Yelling out his name in HG.
The quote: It’s not about the sponsors….
Working hard to get him home to D12.
Her constantly noticing him.
When she chooses to sacrifice herself for him in the conversation with Haymitch.
Them in the Training Center together. The touching, the need to be with each other in every moment.
The forcefield death.
The beach kiss
The morning after the beach kiss…which, I think, is very telling.
After they’re separated.
Mockingjay–she basically pines over Peeta, mourns Peeta, needs Peeta. Read it again if you didn’t get that. Read it again.
Katniss’s life was built to fall in love with Peeta–from the bread to their toasting. Every turn her life took, he was there or a part of it. So, did she feel love in The Hunger Games? Yes. Did she truly understand it then? No. Let’s just say, that’s when she started falling for him….
But isn’t that love? We don’t know the exact moment we love someone. It’s a process and a story.
The shower alone has a panel with more than a hundred options you can choose regulating water temperature, pressure, soaps, shampoos, scents, oils and massaging sponges. When you step out on a mat, heaters come on that blow-dry your body. Instead of struggling with the knots in my wet hair, I merely place my hand on a box that sends a current through my scalp, untangling, parting and drying my hair almost instantly. It floats down around my shoulders in a glossy curtain.
Just some showering….Is that too much to ask for? :)
