check privilege

people falling for blogs that say stuff like “check your non-tablekin privilege” are the young people version of old people on facebook sharing abcnews-com.co articles about paid off protestors

If conservative Christians acted like irrational SJWs

“christmas is cultural appropriation of christians”

"saying christmas doesnt have to be religious is christian erasure”

“okay but???? saying ‘oh my god’ is rly offensive to christians????????? stop contributing to microagression”

“THERE NEEDS TO BE MORE RELIGIOUS DIVERSITY IN MEDIA”

“um sweetie, saying gays can’t be christians is super homophobic and you need to reevaluate yourself”

“catholics can’t eat meat on friday, nobody else should because it might offend them. it’s literally disrespecting their culture to do otherwise.”

“if you don’t 100% support my christian lifestyle you literally hate me because its part of who i am. you cant ‘disagree’ with christianity like that. either you fully support it or you’re christianophobic”

“christians were actively persecuted by islams for centuries?????its totally reasonable to fear all muslims. they enslaved my people. check your Atheist privilege and consider the validity of your thoughts on matters that you have no right to contribute to. christians can’t be racist to islams because islams were/are the religion that oppressed us. we can be PREJUDICE but not racist. #GetWoke”

a concept™ for your consideration: shitty and lardo have had arguments. it happens when you’ve been best friends for almost 4 years. people disagree. but after The Great Performance-Artist-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named Debacle of 2014, bitty has to enact a haus-wide ban on anyone uttering marina abramovic’s name, punishable by fine and loss of pie privileges (lardo thinks she’s a talentless hack and shitty credits her with reinventing the conception of postmodernism. it’s maybe the worst fight they’ve ever had)

milo is the product of a society where rebellion has been almost completely commodified and transformed into a purely spectacular activity. spectacular in the sense that it turns rebellion into something passively consumed rather than acted out in one’s own life. milo’s fans are acting vicariously through him through the consumption of his own acts within mass media (the most glaring manifestation of the spectacle). it’s a rebellious energy funneled into reactionary ends because of the lack of any real alternative.

it’s an inversion of the equally spectacular SJW discourse, where individuals live through mass media figures, with equally crafted and marketed personas, performing rituals (call outs, apologies, “checking one’s privilege”), and ultimately doing nothing off of their computer. it’s politics as a spectator sport, where one’s side is constantly scoring victories over the other through social media. it’s pseudo-politics, where one’s affiliation is more important than any ideals, principles, or common material interest.

“The spectator’s consciousness, imprisoned in a flattened universe, bound by the screen of the spectacle behind which his life has been deported, knows only the fictional speakers who unilaterally surround him with their commodities and the politics of their commodities.”

RIGHT MOTHERFUCKERS:

CISPHOBIA IS NOT A THING
HETEROPHOBIA IS NOT A THING
REVERSE RACISM IS NOT A THING

THESE ARE NOT THINGS BECAUSE SOMEONE CALLING YOU A CRACKER IS NOT BACKED UP BY HUNDREDS OF YEARS OF OPPRESSION AND HATRED AND AN ACTUAL CIVIL WAR OVER YOUR RIGHTS

THESE ARE NOT THINGS BECAUSE AINT NOBODY EVER QUESTION YOUR RIGHTS. AINT NOBODY EVER HAD TO FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHT JUST TO EXIST.

THIS IS NOT “DOING TO THEM WHAT THEY DID TO YOU” BECAUSE SOMEONE SAYING DOWN WITH CIS IS IN NO WAY EQUAL TO ONGOING UNLAWFUL KILLINGS AND OPPRESSION AND IT SURE AS HELL DON’T MAGIC UP A HISTORY OF IT.

WHEN SOMEONE SAYS “LMAO THE STRAIGHTS NEED TO STOP” IT DOESN’T EMBOLDEN SOME HOMO-SUPREMACIST TO GO KILL/BEAT UP SOME STRAIGHT PEOPLE. IT DOESN’T ALLOW/PERPETUATE A SYSTEM OF OPPRESSION AND DEGRADATION.

IF YOU THINK YOU ARE OPPRESSED YOU NEED TO TAKE SEVERAL SEATS AND CHECK YOUR ASSES PRIVILEGE BECAUSE IF YOU THINK THAT’S BAD BOY HAVE I GOT NEWS FOR YOU.

THESE. ARE. NOT. THINGS.

this has been a psa

This post is very Anders critical. You’ve been warned.

Listen, you don’t get to deny all of your favorite character’s flaws and claim they’re “ooc” and “bad writing” and then turn around and say that it’s the writer’s fault for not showing you his flaws.

They did show you his flaws. They’re right there.

They showed you that Anders has absolutely no desire to check his own privilege over elves. They showed you clearly that he only cared about elves when he could appropriate their oppression and make it about his own oppression, somehow.

They showed you Anders repeatedly calling a former-slave an animal and then approving if you sold him back into slavery.

They showed you Anders throwing slavery into the former-slave’s face as a rhetorical devise, over and over again.

They showed you Anders proselytizing to a Dalish woman, no matter how much she protested or shot him down.

They showed you Anders sexually harassing a widow about her dead husband.

They showed you Anders behaving like some “FRIENDZONED!!!11″ man-child and trying to emotionally manipulate you if you told him you just wanted to be friends.

They showed you Anders shit-talking your lover and your relationship to your face; quite possibly to their faces.

They showed you Anders repeatedly shaming a woman of color who he himself has been in orgies with for her sexuality.

They showed you Anders/Justice [nearly] murdering a teenage girl for questioning him.

They showed you Anders disregarding even Justice’s feelings about the body that he shared with Justice. (”Unwilling participant in our threesome”?)

They showed you Anders being down-right emotionally abusive if you didn’t immediately agree to distract the Grand Cleric for him.

They showed you Anders blowing up a building with the clear and direct intention of martyring a group of people he hadn’t so much as asked about it. Anders was never trying to save the Kirkwall Circle, and both the context of his actions and his own dialogue, as well as Orsino’s, make that clear.

Look, sorry-not-sorry, but what the writers showed you wasn’t some woobie who did nothing wrong until suddenly the game decided to vilify him in Inquisition. What the writers showed you was an emotionally abusive racist and misogynist who didn’t care for any cause but his own and never hesitated to throw other people under the bus–even when that meant those other people’ literally dying–to achieve his own ends.

That was all in Dragon Age II. If you closed your eyes and stuck your fingers in your ears, that’s not the writers’ faults.

Dear White Gay Men,

Just because you consider yourselves a minority doesn’t mean you speak for gay POC. You are not Asian, you are not black, you are not latinx, you are not native. You are white. Check your privilege, and shut up in places where it doesn’t concern you.

Unapologetically,

Your local Pinoy

Wow if only racism didn’t exist I was Khloe Kardashian, then I would have been praised throughout high school for wearing hijab instead of being called terrorist for days and weeks and months living in the South.

If only my good friend who had rocks thrown at her for wearing hijab

could just have the privilege of being Khloe.

If only thewomen in France facing anti-veil discrimination could just be Khloe Kardashian.

Habibi Love, man, Habibi Love. Apparently it’s that simple.

Cultural appropriation: the adoption of certain elements (bindi, niqab, etc) of an oppressed people’s culture/practice by a privileged dominant culture, for the purposes of enjoyment (or to appear exotic and “hipster”), and without the adoption of the experiences of racism, oppression, and discrimination that are manifested in those elements for the minority groups.
Cultural appropriation is Khloe being praised for wearing something that Muslim women get abused and discriminated against for wearing on the daily. It is when Khloe wears it for an Instagram post, while Muslim women devotedly choose to wear it to follow their faith, despite the racism and discrimination they (we) face.

John Boyega using his platform to gather other celebs and attempt to teach them about the enormous responsibility of their platform & how they need to check their own privilege is such a big deal.

Several months ago he made the mistake of forgetting his own relative privilege & tweeted some things that were problematic because he didn’t recognize that we are all struggling & resisting oppression from our unique positions & thus some of our work is to “complain” while the work of others with more resources & power may look & need to be different. He was rightfully dragged and sincerely apologized. And his recent tweets show something so vital: he learned.

John recognized that he had previously spoken from a place of relative privilege and needed to check himself. Then, when he saw someone else do something similar (in this case JLaw), he used his privilege and platform to speak up and explain why others need to use theirs more responsibly.

He’s such a good egg & this is such a good example of what it means to check your privilege & reach one, teach one.

If you’re asking the son of an unemployed West Virginia coal miner to check his privilege, or appreciate the ways Barack Obama’s daughters might be underprivileged to him in certain ways, I think you’re asking too much of basic human cognition. That kid can’t look at his life and say about a group of people he doesn’t understand or interact with day to day that their lives are much worse than his. That’s one of the things that the modern discourse on racial privilege and racial disadvantage misses out. Even though I don’t think the people making these arguments are that reductive, I think that they are a lot more sophisticated in what they’re saying about how privilege operates in our society. The way that it is actually talked about appears very reductive and that’s a very significant problem.
