check and balances

On his 100th day in office on Saturday, facing historically low popularity ratings, a succession of intractable foreign crises and multiple investigations of his links with Moscow, Donald Trump reminded the nation that 1 May was Loyalty Day.

The day is a US tradition dating back to the cold war, when it was a bolster to stop May Day becoming a rallying point for socialists and unionised workers, but for an embattled president learning politics on the job it has an added resonance.

In an interview with Fox News to mark the 100-day mark, he declared himself “disappointed” with congressional Republicans, despite his many “great relationships” with them.

He blamed the constitutional checks and balances built in to US governance. “It’s a very rough system,” he said. “It’s an archaic system … It’s really a bad thing for the country.”

[…]

He has failed to get any of his priorities turned into legislation in the face of party disunity, and his attempt to rule by executive order has been largely hollow. His decrees have been either meaningless, like his one-page, detail-free tax reform plan, or have been blocked by the courts, such as his travel ban for Muslim countries and refugees.

Trump’s approval ratings have remained mired at historic lows for a presidency in what is supposed to be a honeymoon period, hovering around – and frequently below – the 40% mark, well below his recent predecessors at this stage in their presidencies.

But his core supporters have remained faithful, choosing to believe that the mainstream media are purveyors of fake news, rather than accept that the Trump presidency has not been the unrivalled success the president has claimed. They have also accommodated Trump’s affinity for Vladimir Putin. The percentage of Republicans who see Russia as an unfriendly state has fallen from 82% in 2014 to 41% now, according to a CNN/ORC poll.

Today I voted.

And then I wrote this to share with some of my close friends. I just started to feel more and more anxious as the results started to came in with the news of Religous Fanatics attacking Left Wing supporters, votes being replaced or pre-prepared. Even the Supreme Committee of Elections making ill-assorted decisions and declared they will be accepting unstamped votes. It is bloody scarry.

I don’t know how much you people are aware between the politics of UK and US and your own countries of course, but here in Turkey we have been in a bad spot along side with them for couple of years. Erdoğan butchered the system, removed the teachings regarding Atatürk, took the celebration days regarding our historical victories away to make them forgotten and sold this country piece by piece.

Today we had a referendum to decide our future if we will continue to have a voice, freedom to have a say in this country, despite all the games they played to miscount the votes in past years or if we allow him to take sole control over the country and make us the next Iran.

People are hopeful that we will overcome this and that we will show that we won’t give up that easily from our Republic and rights, but I am not. I’m terrified. Our journalists has been jailed or had to flee the country to continue to speak freely, men and women both, and there is covered muslim women among them too. Which says a lot about this so called Islamic ‘leardership’.

If he wins this, if he becomes the only man that withholds the power over this country, he will be making drastic changes in the law. I’m talking about we losing the parliament and multi-party system, as check and balance of the goverment getting cripled. I’m talking about them popping up new laws so women and girls even having less rights, maybe even not being sent to school or not being allowed to go to school. I’m talking about people being forced in Islamic traditions, regardless of their religion or belief, and being punished by jail or deportation. Even though I rejected having a religion at a young age, I still got educated on Islam and the culture of it. I know that it is not a forced religion, it gives people the freedom to chose how they wish to worship. Faith is in people’s heart, it is not something for wealth and power hungry men and women to use as a play thing.

I was taught to question and discuss things, even the Quran itself by the very teachers whose duty was to educate us on Islam and how to be a proper human being. I may not be a Muslim, but my mother is, like many other people, and I respect it. I was lucky I guess, for having such open minded and well versed teachers in their areas than following things blindly.

Couple of months ago I had a dream, that made me feel hopeless and devastated, I saw myself fleeing the country as I wore black burqa, covered from head to toe. And finally reaching to another country as I stripped the fabric off of me with screams and tears in hysteria. You will maybe say “Del it was just a stupid dream” but the fear and despair for the future I felt wasn’t a dream. I just hope it is not one of those dreams of mine that comes true.

I do want to leave this country, but I do not want to flee it in fear and in a way to not to return again. Because whatever the result, whether is to preserve our freedom or his power, this country and it’s people going to pay a huge price for what comes next.

And for that, I am terrified.

Tony Stark just barely convincing Ross to give him and Natasha a chance to fix things instead of going after his fellow Avengers with “boys and bullets.”

I need to talk about this scene, and how it illustrates why I have genuine BAFFLEMENT that people want to convince me that Tony Stark cares about no one but himself.

It’s almost as though the entire bureaucratic immune system of the government is reacting to an invading virus. The worst thing any of us can do is assume that the ascent of El Caudillo del Mar-A-Lago was not the sui generis event that it clearly was, and that he, himself, is not the sui generis occupant of the White House that he clearly is, and that he has not surrounded himself with dubious quacks and hacks that are sui generis in their approach to government as they clearly are.

There is a level of intellectual—and, perhaps, literal—corruption that is unprecedented in the modern history of the presidency and that is a genuine and unique threat to democratic institutions that are the objects of destructive contempt. The man ran on chaos. He won on chaos. And now he’s governing on chaos. The checks and balances and safety valves of the Constitution—the things that, well, constitute—the immune system of this self-governing republic are facing a threat that is as different as it is lethal.

Asteroids in retrograde, just as with planets, symbolize Karma that needs to be worked on for a person in this lifetime.  The nature of Retrograde shows the internalization of the traits of the Asteroids.  This can be done so the person learns to deal with the nature of the asteroid that they struggled with a prior incarnation.

Retrograde asteroids can have an impact on the a person the same way Retrograde planets have.   This can result in varied effects on the expression of the asteroids nature for a person.  Sometimes i can help the person be more aware of the asteroids presence and effects, sometimes it can hinder them. The deepest impact felt by asteroids in retrograde come from the asteroids of Chiron, Juno, Vesta, Ceres, and Pallas.

As with all retrograde occurrences the Chiron’s nature is more internalized into the consciousness.   In this life the wounding occurring from Chiron is attaching deeper into the conscious level making the wounding more apparent. Chiron in Retrograde can create a scenario where a wounding during the life is so deep the person is always conscious is always aware of it.  The individual most likely will have troubles moving forward from the pain they received causing psychological troubles..

The house Chiron is in tells where the wound most likely occurred along with the traits affected in the person’s life.  This house may have trouble expressing itself due to the severe wounding received attached to the consciousness.  In a sense Chiron in retrograde acts like a second Saturn in the chart limiting the person potentially in the house it sits in.  However where Saturn offers lessons and the lifting of Karma, Chiron’s effects can be constant.

Chiron in Retrograde can be a karmic lesson that teaches the person about pain not dealt with in a past life.  Another possible scenario from this retrograde is the person is dealing with acknowledgment of wounding and pain they inflicted upon others.  For the person to move forward in life this position forces them to get of of their comfort zone and seek the aid of others to cope and move forward.  Once the native learns how to do deal with Chiron’s wounding, he is stronger and more able to repay karmic debts and help others in the way the wounded healer likes.

If the person chooses to drown in their pain instead of moving forward it may always be difficult for them.  This can set the tone possibly to relive this same karma in another incarnation.  The person must take responsibility for finding how to cope with the deepest wounds the feel.  Whether it’s through soul searching or by  opening themselves up to help from others.  Whichever way the person must face their deepest wounds of their own accord.

With retrograde Juno in an individual’s birth chart a person can internalize and think more about marriage and partnerships in general.  Juno in retrograde may make the individual possess a Libra-like attachment to relationships in their life. This comes from their constant internal contemplation of relationships in their life.  An individual here with this retrograde can think a lot about the fairness, equality, sacrifice, and overall commitment a union.

A system of checks and balances internally can be in play over how relationships are valued.  With Juno retrograde the person can possibly have struggles committing to a union due to thinking about their complexities.  This can make them come across as shy and potentially have issues approaching suitable partners.  Conversely the person can consider the benefits of forming a marriage of business partnerships.  Relationships may be so important to them they are more aggressive in pursuing them after seeing their benefits.

In some cases the individual may internalize the things they like or dislike so much they have struggle achieving balance in a relationship.  Internalizing issues they face in their partnerships can have a tendency to cause resentment.  Partnerships in general may carry an unhealthy nature and lack of balance to them.  Power struggles can be a possibility due to potential communicating issues with Juno in Retrograde.  In a marriage union peak intimacy moments may be hard to come by with the struggles of expressing internalized thoughts.

A Juno retrograde person may find themselves attracted to passive aggressive partners whom don’t want to deal with conflict.  This can serve as a basis to agitate partnerships that face troubles.  The structure of the relationship in this case can be prone to long term failures.  This can be attributed to the fact that neither partner wants to come out and deal with the reality of issues surrounding the partnership.

The Juno in retrograde person can be very sensitive to the overall condition of a partnership.  Partnerships in trouble can make them think about the imbalances more.  Despite the imbalance the internalized nature of thinking about partnership may also lead to good things.  They can identify the problems in a union that need to be solved.  This person can be more consciously aware of what needs adjustment.

A person with Juno retrograde just might have a karmic position here of having to step outside themselves to re-balance the union by taking the initiative. Karma through the retrograde Juno can be tied to a past life when the person didn’t consider the value of relationships.  Perhaps they were too eager to get into relationships and were in them just out of fear of loneliness or societal pressure.  Another possibility can be in a past life they avoided relationships altogether and were reclusive.  Whichever avenue occurred the person with Retrograde Juno now is forced to consider internally over relationships due to the nature of a retrograde.

When Vesta is retrograde in a natal birth horoscope the person can be seen as born from another lifetime when devotion and dedication was underdone and left bare.  It can also indicate an opposing scenario where there was obsession with dedication and service which caused issues.  Whichever occurrence happened the individual’s soul felt an imbalance between their service and dedication, and the rest of their life.

With Vesta in retrograde the energy from the areas of desire for dedication and devotion are merged with the internal consciousness.  These areas of life are contemplated often since they are a part of the consciousness and the person is forced to acknowledge it.  This can force a person to make up for their mistakes of imbalance in a precious incarnation.  The key is patience with Vesta in Retrograde.  Avoiding obsession or neglect so they person can live a more balanced life.

With this retrograding of Vesta in the birth chart it can be seen as a soul lesson from the universe.  The universe is teaching the value of service but at a steady rate.  If too much or too little dedication is employed the person’s quality of life can suffer.   If too much dedication is employed the same effect can be felt as the overall well-being can be compromised.

The basic nature of Vesta is to take a break from obsessions at times. With the internalization and increased awareness of how the person dedicates they can see the need to make adjustments in this area.  They can understand on a conscious level that too much devotion can hurt the balance of their partnerships, working on their own growth, and take away from the family life. In the same token they may see that not enough devotion and dedication can leave a person feeling void and empty without any direction.  Potentially this can lead to struggle with partnerships or supporting a family financially as example.

With Asteroid Ceres retrograde in a natal birth chart the person can have struggles with nurturing received.  The nurturing could have been void in their life or some cases were inconsistent.  The mother or nurturing parent specially could have factored significantly into this issue; though it can be any form of nurturing and love that should of been received.  The nature of Retrograde Karma shows the energy the Ceres asteroid represents becomes internalized and part of the conscious awareness.

Internally the person may sense a part of the human experience is missing for them.   The internalization of ceres’ energy may lead an individual to struggle to express nurturing.  It could be that they do not understand how to nurture or they feel insecure about it since it is distant to them.  This can be because it was not stressed as appropriate behavior in their upbringing.  With this the person may possibly have issues with seeking relationships or allowing someone to assist or in some cases even love them.

This can all stem from past life karma where the person may of been dependent upon others to bolster them with nurturing.  They may of sought nurturing and love from others instead of learning how to take care of themselves.  Now with retrograde Ceres there is an internal need to learn how to nurture themselves and not rely on others.  By taking care of their own needs they can fill a void missing inside of themselves.  In the process they can learn the value of nurturing so they can learn how to nature others better as well.  The sign and house position of Ceres can give indications of the area nurturing was problematic for them.

With Pallas retrograde in a natal birth horoscope we see where a person becomes more consciously aware of the traits of Pallas internally.  In this case the person thinks and considers their creative intelligence, overall wisdom and ability to stand up for one self-more.  This is due to the true nature of retrograde celestial bodies which shows the internalization of the traits of the retrograde body.  Retrograde Karma is working to make the person more aware of Pallas traits so they can help develop them better.

In a past life the person may have struggled with rushing in before thinking things over.  There could’ve been issues with desire of protecting what they thought was valuable.  Struggles could have existed with developing a sense of wisdom through experience.  Standing up for what they thought was fair and showing confidence in their beliefs may have been an issue for them.  Being fair to themselves and others may have been a recurring problem potentially they dealt with.

Coming into this life Pallas in retrograde can serve the purpose of burning the traits of Pallas into the conscious thinking to correct these issues.  This can help by making the creative intelligence always active and in motion internally. The value of taking action becomes a part of their regular thinking.  They can become a better strategist and consider their moves more.  This can help a person develop patience and consider their moves more in life.

The conscious side of a person can also consider more the value of applying what they learn.  Developing more wisdom and understand internally the value of what they learned is a karmic lesson here.  The Pallas retrograde can help the person think about what they find value in.  This can be from karma moving the person to develop and understanding of the importance of their beliefs. Now an understand internally may develop of what is worth fighting for.

Court Denies DOJ Request For Stay; Trump Immigration Order Remains Suspended
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals denied a Trump administration request to halt a suspension of the Trump order. It means the order remains suspended.

I’m currently LIVING for the judiciary branch.

(Ok, so I’m a lawyer and I’m always living for the judiciary branch.  But I’m extra proud of them today, ok?)

In other news, I’m a little concerned that some Americans don’t seem to know about our system of checks and balances?

  • online news: donald trump doesn't even have a high schooler's understanding of how the checks and balances system works
  • tv news: CONTROVERSIAL TRUMP SCANDAL... he's been buying hair growth cream????
PR and controlling the media - the basics

I’m not going to try and unravel the boys / bands PR, we’ve been trying to do this for years and there’s no reason to think I have all the answers. I will try and explain the different tactics at a PR teams disposal and how much they can (or cannot) control the media.

PR is not like maths, or science, or grammar, it’s not an exact science. It’s about people, and because of that no two situations will play out in exactly the same way.

Another thing to remember is that it’s a balancing act. The media need PR people, and PR people need the media. So there is a lot of ‘I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine’ / trading favours / and choosing battles so as not to ruin relationships you may need in the future.

……

The basics

At the beginning of a ‘campaign’ be it a rebrand, an album launch, a single launch etc the PR team will put together a PR plan (communications plan, whatever you want to call it). This will be lead by the Business Objectives - in a commercial business this is invariably linked to their bottom line (profit/making money). These Business Objectives will be supported by Communications/PR Objectives - what specifically you are trying to achieve through your PR/Communications - these must link directly back to the Business Objectives you are trying to achieve.

You would then look at your Audience (the people you need to connect/engage with to achieve you Communications Objectives), these can be: customers/stakeholders/staff/the media etc. After doing audience segmentation and analysis you would then start to put together a Tactical Plan to reach your Audience>meet you Communications Objectives>meet your Business Objectives.

You would then craft a set/s of Key Messages to use in all of your communications to get across all of the points you want to convey. These will run through all tactics, although they may flex depending on the specific audience you are targeting.

It is at this point that what we are calling ‘PR’ starts to be seen by us, the rest of it goes on behind the scenes.

……..

Tactics and control

Advertising / advertorials - This is the only tactic (other than your clients SM) you can have full control over (other than the specific placement in some case). The major downside of this tactic is that they lack credibility as you are paying for them to be included and therefor don’t come through the lens of a third party.

………..

A proactive press release - These are drafted either in-house or by an agency and are signed off by the client (Harry/Harry’s team  / Louis/Louis’ team etc) They carry all of the key messages you want to get across and traditional each paragraph should be able to stand alone incase the journalist only uses a small section of it. The audience for this is the media, who then in turn reach another audience for you (the public/specific segments of the public if the journalist is from a nice title eg NME/Cosmo etc).

Sometimes journalists are lazy/busy and use the whole of the press release as the article and don’t remove / add anything. In that case, in terms of ‘control’ it’s a big win as they have published exactly what you want to say.

Sometimes they include their own intro text / exit text / opinion alongside your copy. Depending on your relationship with them and their perception of your client this can be a good thing or a bad thing.

If they include something that’s factually incorrect eg get the release date wrong, the PR team can get in contact with them and ask them to correct it. They do have to, but if it’s factually incorrect they normally do change it as it could effect their credibility with their readership. If they include something you don’t like but is an opinion / a quote from someone else etc, again you could ask them to remove it, BUT they are unlikely to as why should they? It’s not in their interest. The PR team may be able to persuade them by offering them something in return / threatening to take away from them - eg offer an interview, threaten to take away access to the artist in the future. This is dodgy ground and should only be done if the reach of the title and the damage the wording included warrants it.

…….

Selling in a story - this is where the PR team specifically contacts a title to offer them a story (normally on an exclusive basis). Although not as ‘formal’ this is unfortunately what we have seen Rusty doing with the Sun. This tactic is normally employed when you want to have more control over how the story spreads than just issuing a press release gives you. It could be to reach a title you particularly want to target - eg one of the boys may want to expand their fanbase and their PR team may then offer the story to a publication they don’t normally work with - for example The Guardian art section / NME. In terms of control - again the journalist can add their own opinion spin, but in the process of selling the story in, you can build in checks and balances - for example the PR having access to it before it is published to approve it. Again this is not black and white, and will need to be negotiated on an individual basis.

……

Reactive media lines - This is traditionally when ‘something’ has happened and a journalist contacts the PR team and asks for their response on that ‘something’. This tends to be one more contentious / unplanned issues that you can’t get ahead of and do proactive media work on. This is where a team can really get it wrong with the deadly ‘not comment’. Even on a reactive basis your response to the journalist should still cover off as many of you Key Messages as possible. In terms of control, a reactive line is hardly ever published in isolation - it normally sits within a bigger piece where they may have got statements / quotes from other parties, and include a lot of the journalists own opinion.

…..

A note on corrections

In print - Nine times out of ten it is not worth asking for a correction in a print piece. Invariably the original piece will have been large and read by many, many people. A correction will be tiny and barely read by any one.

Online - This is more likely to be worth pursuing as the copy will stay on the website indefinitely and can be changed almost immediately. (Please see info above under ‘Proactive press releases’ re: requesting changes, the same caveats apply here.)

……

Shady things

We see more than our fair share of shady goings ons, the best way to differentiate between a ‘above board’ press release and a story that has been ‘sold in’ is to look at which media outlet it is in / how many media outlets it is in simultaneously.

If a story breaks in one or two outlets only it is likely to have been sold in. (The exception to this would be it a story breaks ONLY in a really obscure title, in which case they are most likely making it up for hits)

If a story breaks in multiple titles simultaneously with pretty much the same core wording, it’s pretty much a sure thing that it’s a press release.

……

I think that’s pretty much it. This got VERY long :/

  • Some things are shady, some things aren’t.

  • You have to pick your battles.

  • And don’t piss off people on your way up that you might need on your way back down.
  • Obama: *signed a bunch of executive orders*
  • "Conservatives": That's wrong! That's unconstitutional! That's evil! That dismantles our entire system of checks and balances!
  • Trump: *signs a bunch of executive orders*
  • "Conservatives": He's just fixing the mess Obama made! We can trust him! Give him a chance! He doesn't have time for checks and balances! He'll slow down later! He's just protecting us!

This is how it is: Trump gets sworn in January 20th. We’ve still got 2.5-ish months under the Obama Administration. Between now and then there’s the chance to make a media circus out of Donald Trump’s upcoming sexual assault trial, creating more friction between him and his party, giving us at least a little breathing room in congress. He’s appointing three new judges this term, so checks and balances (which weren’t really adjusted well for a two-party system) won’t be in good working condition for the Democrats (which counts third-party and non-voters and basically any minority because welcome to reality).

So first thing: fight for that media circus. House reps will do ANYTHING for reelection. Friction within the party will force them to pick sides.

Second thing: VOTE IN 2018. Mid-term elections are a thing. ALL 435 SEATS OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES WILL BE CONTESTED. Go out and VOTE. We can win back the house. That’s one victory we sorely need. 33/100 SEATS OF SENATE WILL BE CONTESTED. We can win that back, too. 38 GOVERNORSHIPS WILL BE CONTESTED. If your county’s red, time to turn that around. VOTE ON NOVEMBER 6TH, 2018.

The clock is ticking guys.

Whatever else you might want to say about STAR WARS fandom, I have SO MUCH AFFECTION for it, there are so many people writing really good stories and drawing really beautiful art and coming up with really great scenarios and especially in PT fandom there’s a group of people that I never have to apologize for being a fan of the prequels. I don’t have to feel like I’m expected to preface everything with qualifiers, instead I can just whole-heartedly embrace what I love and that it’s good for me, that I honestly enjoy it genuinely, that this part of fandom absolutely embraces the good and loves these characters and this world/galaxy with me.

Every time I sink into a really good fic, when I come out of it, I remember, yes, I am so glad to be here, I’m so glad there are others who are filled with just as much genuine love for these characters as I am. So here’s another list of fics that give me that happy, fizzy feeling of being in a fandom I love. (Fic recs every Wednesday.)

Part 1 (all parts are linked)

Parts in bold are text messages

As Sam and I left my mother’s townhouse, I felt lighter than I had in years.  The weight of having to hide my relationship with Sam had affected me more than I realized.

Sam’s hand was warm and strong in mine as we walked away.  I paused for a moment and looked back at the only home I had ever known.  In my minds eye I replayed some happy memories of this place.  I saw Cas and I playing tag out front as kids, and my Dad teaching me how to ride a bike.

But the happy memories were far outweighed by anger, anxiety and sadness after my Dad died.  I had wasted so much time trying to please my Mother. I realized now that no matter what I did, I would always be a living reminder of her lost love.

But that was all behind me now.  I saw my mother for who she really was, and I was done playing her games.  That part of my life was over. Never again would I let anyone make me feel inferior for being an Omega.

I looked over at Sam and he smiled as he leaned in and kissed me gently,  right out in the open.  “Are you ready to go?” He asked me.

“More than ready.” I whispered.

This place was my past, and Sam Winchester was my future.
