Thrifting tips!

I spend a lot of time thrifting and looking for new clothes and I think I’ve gotten pretty good at it over the past 5 years or so. So, here are some things I’ve learned about thrift shopping and I thought I would share them with you!

1. Get creative!

If you see a t-shirt that you think would look good cropped, a pair of jeans that could be distressed or cut into shorts, or maybe a shirt that could be dyed a different color, buy it and try it out! Don’t spend a lot of money on this at first because you might find out that it’s harder than you thought and that’s okay! I think it’s worth a try, some of my favorite pieces of clothing are ones that I’ve bought secondhand and then modified somehow.

2. Check every section of the store. Every section.

Whatever gender you are, shop in both the men and women’s sections. There are several reasons for this:

-Style has no gender. If you like something, wear it.

-Lots of clothes can be seen as unisex and the section they end up in depends on the mood of the worker who sorted them.

Also make sure to check out the kids section. I know this is weird but if you’re smallish you can wear kids shirts and they’re usually really funny.

3. Don’t sleep on the shoes.

I know this seems gross but hear me out. Shoes are expensive as HELL and buying shoes from the thrift store is a really good way to try different shoes without the financial commitment. You can always disinfect them before you wear them.

4. Have an open mind.

It’s fine to have something in mind that you want but try to go thrifting with your mind open to anything you might find. If you’re super focused on buying a pair of overalls and you spend all your time looking for that one thing you’re gonna end up disappointed and potentially pass over really cool stuff.

5. Don’t worry about brands.

I literally have never heard of most of the brands of the clothing that I buy and that’s okay! I have friends who will only buy thrifted clothing if they recognize the brand which just seems silly to me. If it catches your eye and you think it will make a good edition to your wardrobe, buy it!
