Chapter 2: Remembering You

“Zane… Don’t cry… Its okay…shh…” Midnight whispered, hugging him closely. “I know it hurts right now. I know you’re hurting. But it’s all going to be okay. I’m here. Dimitri is here. Brendon’s here. We’re going to be fine. And one day, you’re going to see your dad again. And I’ll stand right next to you until that day comes. I promise.” She kissed his forehead.

He whimpered clinging to her,”promise?”

“Pinkie Promise.” She smiled softly and kissed his forehead.

“Okay…” He looked sad, “I can still remember what happened,” His lip trembled slightly as he tried to keep from crying.

She held him close, “Don’t hold back. Go ahead. Cry. It doesn’t make you weak. It makes you a living person with emotions. Okay?” Her voice was soft as she stroked his hair, “I love you, and you’ll be okay. I promise.”

“I’m sorry Midnight…” He sighed into her chest, playing with her dogtags. “I’m sorry I’m weird and fucked up and not normal.”

She shook her head, “You aren’t fucked up, the world is. Just keep being you. That’s all I ask. I don’t care about the fact that you have some things going on in your head that you can’t change, or that you’re asexual, or that you’re grieving. You’re Zane, and its my job to be here. Okay?” She smiled softly at him, and kissed him softly.

He shrugged and pulled away after a moment, “I love you Midnight..” He studied her face.

She smiled and touched her nose to his, “I love you too.”

Zane woke up with a smile on his face, contented by the warm of the bed, unable to quite yet think clearly, “Mm… Midnight… Love you so much..”

Brendon groaned, woken up by Zane laying on top of him, “Get off of me you lardass.”
Zane, having realized Brendon wasn’t Midnight, sat straight up, trying to rub the sleep from his eyes. “Wha..?”

“I’m not Midnight.” He sighed, pushing Zane off of him, and climbing out of the bed, “I gotta piss.”

Zane sat there silently for a moment.

“Midnight…You promised.” He whimpered.

That day was the same as every other day it seemed since he and Midnight broke up.

Just drowning in his thoughts of what he could have done to make her stay.

To make her keep her promises to him.

He watched her read her book quietly in class, her fingers would slightly twitch every once in awhile. Zane knew what that meant. Midnight smoked a lot, and had grown addicted to it, even though it was nearly impossible for a demon to get addicted to something, she was addicted to smoking.

Similarly to how he was addicted to her.

He wouldn’t admit it, but sometimes he wondered if  he hadn’t been asexual, if he had been able to keep her with him. If he hadn’t found sex so gross, maybe she would have loved him more.

Enough not to cheat on him that is.

He hugged his legs to his chest, watching her silently as she giggled at a part of the book that had amused her.

“Zane! Read this line! Come on! Its freaking hilarious. This is why I love this author. She’s funny!” Midnight grinned at Zane, holding her book in his face.

He backed up, ”Okay okay.. Um…” She pointed to the line and he read it silently, ”oh…ahha…that was funny.”

“Zane!” She whined.

“What??” He looked at her.

“It was funny!” She pouted at him, “it was!”

“…Sorry..” He got a look of a kicked puppy and she hugged him dropping her book.

“Don’t give me that look… I feel bad…”

“You should. You’re mean.” He pouted.

She kissed his forehead pulling him back to lay on the bed, ”Shh. Then we shall cuddle, mister.”

The bell rang, signaling that it was the end of the class, and he stood up slowly and looked to where Midnight had been sitting. She was gone.

I just went on a beach retreat with my local sorority Chi Theta Phi and despite the rain it was a great trip. We hiked, we went to the beach, had some great seafood, watched movies, played some retro games in the house and even made some s’mores in the oven. :)
