The other night I was going through some old videos on my computer, and somehow I ended up down a nostalgia rabbit hole dating back to 2011, but in those videos I remembered the first cosplay I was ever proud of:
Charden Flamberg from Black Cat.
I’d decided to cosplay Charden completely on a whim; one of my internet friends had cosplayed him and I thought she looked so cool in the costume that I binge-watched Black Cat and wanted to cosplay Charden myself.
To this day, Charden stands as the first cosplay I wore to a convention, Anime USA 2011, that I was proud of. My dad had spray painted the blood skull for me and I was so pleased with my ridiculously tall top hat that everyone loved, even if they had no clue who I was dressed as or could only come up with “Oh the blood guy!” So even though the wig was a terrible snarled mess and my shirt didn’t fit right and people kept mistaking me for the Undertaker from Kuroshitsuji (to which I just say HOW?) I was still happy with my Charden cosplay.
I don’t have very many pictures of Charden; most of the ones I do, my wig was tangled or I had my con badge on or I was wearing these awful old green sunglasses, but I have this one. It was a simpler time in 2011 and this will always be my favorite photo of me as Charden Flamberg, and that’s why I wanted to share it with tumblr.
Looking at it now though, a lot has changed in three years. I have a really nice trench coat, I learned how wig detangler works, I don’t have braces anymore and even though someone sat on my oversized hat back in 2012, I can fix it. So come this fall when the weather gets cool, I think i’m going to dig my blood skull out again.
