character: the only star in this family

ok look i love toffee but people gotta stop discrediting moon like she’s the character who went through the most shit in the series thus far. she lost her mom. she lost her childhood. she lost her freedom to transition into a queen. she was forced to become queen at a young age. she’s constantly judged by her family for marrying someone she loves because the man is the only one who gives her some sort of emotional support + balance in her life. she lies to her people to make them feel safe in a kingdom with borders that aren’t safe at all. she’s prejudiced towards monsters because her mother’s death traumatized her mentally and she’s slowly developing out of her racism. she might be racist but she admits she’s wrong when she discovers that some monsters are only protecting their children the same way she’s protecting her daughter. she made the choice to abandon her husband who she loves to protect her daughter. she chose to sacrifice her kingdom because she doesn’t want what happened to her happen to star even if she’s willing to lay her own life down for her child. she legitimately lost her daughter even if it was only for a moment she still witnessed her daughter die before her eyes. moon lost everything and she never gave the fuck up. it’s great that star eliminated toffee, but moon should’ve been the one to punch his lights out. so don’t tell me she missed. she didn’t miss all those decades ago, ok? she made her first decision as queen, and despite paying for the consequences of her actions in the present she still continues to fight and stand. do not discredit the queen.

Cats Don’t Dance AU:   Starco Edition

This awesome drawing was a commission that I asked @wet-monsoon to make.  So I recently saw the movie “Cats Don’t Dance” and came up with an idea of combining it with Star vs the Forces of Evil.  Basically Star is the Danny of the AU, an aspiring actress who wants to make it big in Hollywood while Marco is the Sawyer of the AU, a character who once dreamed of making it big in Hollywood but have gave up on ever becoming a star. However thanks to Star positive attitude, she inspire him, along with several other characters to impress the boss of the Film Company so that they will all be made film stars! While in Cat’s Don’t Dance AU, where only humans are allowed to be in movies, this AU, only the rich and wealthy can be in movies while middle and lower class families are only casted as extra’s or stunt doubles. So in this AU, I dunno, I guess either Jeremy or Brittany could be Darla.

@p-valley-blog made a Starco Cats Don’t Dance AU comic on his blog, so check it out.
'Billions' Will Make TV History With Gender Non-Conforming Star
Asia Kate Dillon says they are here to "change the game."

A nonbinary actor portraying a nonbinary character in a major TV series!

Taylor, they said, is different from other cultural depictions of non-binary and gender non-conforming people in that the character’s storyline didn’t focus on coming out or rejection from their friends and family. Calling the role a “personal breakout,” they said. “Not only is Taylor different from anything we’ve seen on television before, but I am something new, too. I’m here to change the game.”

Adding to canon is not the same thing as destroying canon

At San Diego Comic Con, we learned that Sonequa Martin-Green’s character, Michael Burnham, is Sarek’s adoptive daughter. The second I heard the news, all I could think was, “Let the hate begin.” And boy, did it ever.

I understand the disappointment, particularly with fan fic writers who invested a lot of time and effort into crafting stories that fit neatly into canon. Amazing how one sound bite can bulldoze right through decades of widely accepted fanon, huh?

Let’s be real, those little behind the scenes moments are almost the entire point of fan fiction: some of us like something so much, we like to imagine all the things the writers didn’t tell us, but now Michael Burnham has come along like a square peg in a round hole, rendering countless stories AU that previously adhered perfectly to canon. Some of mine included.

But fanon isn’t canon. One might say, “How come we’re just hearing about this now?” Surely Spock would have mentioned having an adoptive sister? But would he? Would he though?

No one had any idea he was engaged to T’Pring until the Enterprise showed up to Vulcan on Spock’s impromptu wedding day in the TOS episode, “Amok Time.” What was it he said when Lieutenant Uhura asked who the lovely woman on the viewscreen was?

If you watch closely enough and get creative with your interpretation, I swear Christine Chapel mouths the word, “bullshit.”

And no one knew that Spock had a strained relationship with his father until that time dear old Sarek hopped on Enterprise for the Coridan admission debate in the TOS episode, “Journey to Babel.” Kirk urged Spock to go down to the planet and visit his family before they left orbit, and what was Spock’s reply?

I can’t think of a better example of where Spock made Kirk look like a total asshole.

And then there’s the fact that Kirk had known Spock for decades before finding out he had a half-brother named Sybok in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier.

You would think Kirk would be used to Spock family bombshells by now.

So if anything, the idea that Spock had a secret adoptive sister actually feels more in keeping with canon than going against it. Given the weight of the evidence, I wouldn’t be all that shocked to discover he had three step mothers and a whole nest of secret love children drifting around out there.

The other thing is, as viewers, we tend to get into the habit of thinking that if a character doesn’t specifically address something on screen in front of other characters, other characters are in the dark along with the viewers. Like if a character didn’t explicitly announce some detail about their personal life to the world, not only did it never happen, it never could have happened. And that’s just silly. Think about this: Kirk, Spock, and the rest of the crew spent five years together on that mission, and we only got to view a little less than 66 hours of it. So imagine all the conversations in the mess hall we as viewers missed out on. Not only that, many of those details would be fairly trivial anyway.

Going back and adding to canon is not the same thing as destroying canon. Star Trek, particularly The Original Series, was always more focused on exploring the galaxy and meeting new civilizations – its primary purpose wasn’t to flesh out complicated life stories for each of the main characters. When you think about it, there’s so much we don’t know about Sarek, Amanda, or Spock’s upbringing. Almost everything we do know about this family comes from two episodes – “Journey to Babel” in The Original Series and “Yesteryear” in The Animated Series.

I think because we spent more than five decades without any concrete ideas of how Sarek and Amanda met, what Spock’s formative years were really like, or how their family dynamics worked, we just filled in the blanks for ourselves. But fifty years is a long time for the lines between canon and fanon to start getting blurred.

So I’m actually tickled pink at the thought that Spock had an adoptive sister, not furious that they’re corrupting more than fifty years of canon. It would be tampering with canon to claim that Starship Troopers is actually some kind of prequel to Kirk and the starship Enterprise. That would be destroying canon, but writing in a sister for Spock where one previously didn’t exist isn’t quite the same thing.

Would you like to know more?

The writers of the show are just doing what we as fan fic writers do all the time – filling in the gaps. You’re definitely allowed to feel however you want to feel about it. And I do understand a lot of the dismay and shock. It really sucks to pour your heart and soul into something, polishing it for months or even years until it’s perfect, and then have Michael Burnham thrown into the mix and it almost feels like a bad Photoshop job over your favorite family portrait, ruining your origins fics for Sarek/Amanda or Spuhura or Spirk or Spones or Spotty? (Is that actually what the Spock/Scotty ship is called?). It’s perfectly acceptable to say that Michael Burnham’s existence has ruined your perception of canon, but I don’t think it should be confused with ruining actual canon.

During the Comic Con panel, producer Alex Kurtzman insisted they have a good canon explanation for why Spock never mentions Michael. He was quoted as saying, “We’re aware [of the situation]. You’ll see where it’s going, but we are staying consistent with canon.” So I’m inclined to keep an open mind and see where they take it before dismissing it outright for being “too ludicrous.” Weirder things have actually happened within the Trek universe, so try not to let this revelation get you down.

No, Rey is not a Skywalker.

“But Rey and Kylo being cousins fighting for the future of the Skywalker name is compelling.”

I’d like to break this down step by step, avoiding discussion about what Rey being Luke’s daughter would mean for Luke’s character and the plot pirouettes that would be necessary to explain that timeline.

Let’s just focus on the framing of family.

Ed Fielder is a 61-year-old scrivener at the palace of the Night Court. Ed is quite mortal, something that’s not a given in this world. Ed is so dedicated to his work that he barely notices when his most frequent client, Lucardo Von Gishaupt, one of the immortal and forever-young aristocrats, flirts with him.

Lucardo is a handsome man with enticing eyes, and Ed wonders why such a man of high rank would ever want to be with him. But after Ed’s initial hesitation, their romance blossoms, which causes friction in Lucardo’s family, who are not too pleased to see their immortal son spending his time with a mortal. Especially a mortal nearing so close to his twilight years. And Ed has to overcome his feeling of inadequacy while being around people who have not only lived a life of luxury he cannot understand, but who also joke of drinking blood.

Letters for Lucardo is Noora Heikkilä’s first in a four-part series focusing on these star-crossed lovers of the Night Court. The book is masterfully illustrated and the characters are portrayed as real and vulnerable. The scenes in the Night Court, with veiled figures enshrouded by candlelight, are intriguing. But Heikkilä truly shines when it comes to how natural a simple laugh bursting out of Lucardo feels. Or how palpable the dawning horror becomes as we watch Ed realize he has woken up in the bed of Lucardo’s father, The Lord of the Night Court.

The romance of Lucado works because Heikkilä has created an intriguing world and characters we come to adore. Any fan of romance, vampires, or court intrigue will find something to love here.

My Alien: Covenant Review

As some of you who followed this blog from the beginning may remember, I’m a huge Alien franchise fan and gave Prometheus a 20K word review and analysis when it came out. This one won’t be quite as long, but I have some intense feelings about it.

Simply put, this is a really good movie but not an Alien movie. The redesign of the creatures to resemble actual alleged alien encounters from the end of the 20th century is interesting, but they are no longer H.R. Giger’s design. Similarly, having them fly around in flying saucers is a divergence from the animalistic nature of the original Alien films.

I like that it’s set entirely on Earth, and I thought the human cast, especially Richard Dreyfuss, were very good. But they exuded a sense of wonder and beauty that was new to the Alien franchise. Spielberg is known for this kind of movie magic but I have to wonder if he was right to replace directors like Ridley Scott and David Fincher, who make some of the darkest movies ever. The cameo from French director François Truffaut was a welcome surprise though.

I really like the retro sci-fi look of the ships, which were clearly miniatures and not CGI like so much of cinema has become. The photography also has a 70s edge that puts it in tune with the original Alien, though being on Earth this one is much brighter and more colorful. This ignores Cameron’s more documentary look and doesn’t reach the heights that Alien 3 made in terms of look and visual tone, but I think it was a good idea.

My only real objection is that Roy leaves his family to explore his obsession with Devil’s Tower. I don’t think this was quite in character for him and though it was necessary to move the plot forward, it robbed us of what might have been had he tried to take his family into the UFO site. Still though, the scene in which we make ‘musical’ contact with the aliens for the first time is stunning and an amazing addition to the Alien world, which sets up infinite possibilities for the next films in the series.

2/5 stars as an Alien film, but 5/5 as a Spielberg film.
Constance Wu to Star in 'Crazy Rich Asians' (Exclusive)
Fresh Off the Boat star Constance Wu is in talks for the lead in Warner Bros.' Crazy Rich Asians.

Jon M. Chu is directing the adaptation of Kevin Kwan’s New York Times best-selling novel, which will feature an all-Asian cast.

Based on a screenplay written by Peter Chiarelli (The Proposal) and Adele Lim (TV series Lethal Weapon), the film will center on the lives of wealthy Chinese families living in Singapore. It follows Rachel Chu (Wu), an American-born Chinese economics professor, who travels to her boyfriend Nick’s hometown of Singapore for his best friend’s wedding. Before long, his secret is out: Nick is from a family that is impossibly wealthy, he’s perhaps the most eligible bachelor in Asia and every single woman in his ultra-rarefied social class is incredibly jealous of Rachel and wants to bring her down.

While the project has not been officially greenlighted, sources say it is on the development fast-track.

Wu has become a breakout star due to her performance as lead character Jessica Huang on the ABC series Fresh Off the Boat, which is in its third season.”

GLAAD has announced the list of nominees for the 28th annual GLAAD Media Awards, honoring Moonlight, Supergirl, The Handmaiden, Frank Ocean, and more.

The annual awards honor “fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of the LGBTQ community” in categories like film, TV, comics, music, and journalism. This year’s list covers 156 individual nominees, including 115 nominees in English and 41 in Spanish.

Moonlight and Star Trek Beyond were the only two films to make the cut in the wide release category, the lowest number of nominees since 2003. The TV categories, on the other hand, are much more robust, including series like Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Supergirl, Transparent, Modern Family, The OA, Orphan Black, and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. The awards also honored individual episodes in series without a regular LGBTQ character, like “San Junipero” from Black Mirror.

In the music category, Against Me!, Elton John, Lady Gaga, Frank Ocean, and Sia all scored nominations.

The GLAAD Media Awards ceremonies will be held April 1 in Los Angeles and May 6 in New York. See all the film, TV, comic, and music nominees below.

Little Sister Jyn

Some of the tumblr community has expressed disdain over Baze calling Jyn, “little sister.” They say it’s too familiar, despite that Baze has known Jyn all of a few hours.

I say this is fucking bullshit, that stems from very Western (and therefore very distant and individualistic) cultural outlook on family.

Considering it is normal for Chinese (which Baze is) to call their waitress “小姐” (lit. “little elder sister”), Baze calling Jyn “little sister” is NOT out of character, too familiar, too much of “Jyn having instantaneously deep relationships with other characters.”

Not only is it believable for Baze to call Jyn “little sister,” it ties in more Asian culture with the very heavily Asian coded Jedha already.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

If you have Amazon Prime you should watch it and here is why:

  1. Written and directed by a woman
  2. Written and directed by a Jewish woman
    1. About a Jewish housewife in New York in the 1950s whose life goes sideways
  3. The main character is a woman and she’s funny as fuck
  4. Religion is important to her, they talk about Yom Kippur and the rabbi and and and many times the first episode
  5. They grab a lot of stereotypes head on and I found it pretty enjoyable. There are tropes, but they don’t go into gross for me.
  6. Tony Shaloub as the dad
  7. Luke Kirby as Lenny Bruce okay

Sadly it does star a non-Jewish actress in the lead role, though she grew up in a Jewish area and her own family was not religious, she is not Jewish. That’s the only fault I can find with this show so far. That is definitely a doozy, but, man, so far, this show is amazing. Seriously.

It’s only one episode so far but I am in love with Mrs. Maisel.

Wish List

I will only be happy with Season 19 if…

* Someone other than Liv has a character arc
* There is a beard on either Rafael or Sonny
* Fin is a Sargent, for crying out loud, and more screen time
* Ken returns
* and/or Munch guest appears
* Rollins and Carisi build their friendship (because men and women can be JUST friends)
* Carisi actually gets to be a lawyer
* Carisi family drama
* A new squad member who we like
* Dr. Huang (B.D. Wong) returns and/or guest stars
* Can we get some Elliot and Olivia closure before Season 20???
* Let Olivia be happy for more than half a season
* AND the first episode of the season must start with Rafael and Sonny in bed (and they are married by the end of the season)
* OR the first episode starts with Barba getting ready in the morning, picking his tie, getting dressed, making his coffee, etc.

Not the most refined wish list but we all have wants!!

Colin Trevorrow: Episode IX will handle Leia with “love and respect”

Colin Trevorrow talks to Cinemablend about how they’ll be handling Carrie Fisher’s death in Episode IX:

She was a major character, that’s not a secret. She really was. And it was extremely sad for all of us, mostly just because she was so loved by the Star Wars family and everyone that worked with her. I feel like our options are limited mostly by ourselves, in that there is only certain things that we are willing to do. But I can guarantee it will be handled with love and respect, and all of the soul that Carrie Fisher deserves.

It’s a tough decision all-around, but let’s not forget the human element is important here. Yes, it’s easy to say they “should” do certain things for whatever reason, but these are also actual people we’re talking about who have to make this film. Like many fans, I’m a little wary of Trevorrow and his ability to handle this, but at least he seems to understand how important this is.

What a Healing Pod Can’t Repair by Remember_Me

Summary: The compromised wormhole was ripping apart at the seams, sending everyone spiraling away in completely different directions. Lance could feel himself being pulled and bent in ways he was definitely not supposed to be.–Stitching the team back together after everyone is separated is difficult, and for one Paladin rescue wouldn’t be coming for a very long time.

Shut Up and Dance With Me by wittyy_name

Summary: Lance and his friends have been regulars at the Altea Dance Studio for years. Not just for classes, but to hang out, practice, and spend time with good people who love dancing. Every year, they audition to be one of the few representing Altea at the regional dance competition. Lance always auditions solo, but this year he misses out on auditions and blows his chance to participate. And so does his self-proclaimed rival, Keith.Luckily, Shiro comes up with a brilliant plan: convince Lance and Keith to audition as a duo. With a little convincing, and a lot of effort, these two might just be able to pull it off and go to regionals… or they might crash and burn.

This multi-chapter fic chronicles the lives of a hockey player named Keith who gets forcibly enlisted into figure skating lessons by his brother, Shiro, to “work on his footwork”. There he meets a pompous - yet talented - figure skater named Lance and gets swept away by both the sport and the skater.Enjoy the ride because it’s only just started.
WC: 149983 (9/?)
General Notes: Like if i wasnt already deep into this fandom, this sealed the deal. like holy hell, Mina does a wonderful job with this fic and its so fucking long like holy- and just i love it so much. I cant express how much i love this fic. 100/10

General Notes: this is a tear jerker. like if i need some good angst, this is one of the ones i come back to. just, heed the warnings, cuz it sneaks up on you. 10/10

Top 9 Animated Shows of 2016

I don’t wish to mince words.  2016 sucked.  It sucked a lot.  In addition to losing several beloved celebrities, including Alan Young, Alan Rickman, David Bowie, just to name a handful, my family lost two pets in as many months, and dealt with several other personal losses that, I’ll be honest, has really dashed my holiday spirits this year.

It’s been a rough time, but one of the reasons that I adore animation is that it is the window to the fantastic, a mirror of the soul whose only restrictions are the imagination of the writers and artists.  They are my escape, and my passion.  I believe that a good story and good animation can take you on a journey that can rival any book.  I believe that with all of my heart.

And while 2016 definitely sucked in many, MANY respects…It did not in the Animation department.  With several incredible films including  Moana, Kubo and the Two Strings, and Zootopia, and a strong stable of Animated Television shows as well.  And so for this list, I’m going to included my Nine Favorite shows from 2016.  I will also include the best places to watch said shows online, if you feel like checking them out for yourself.

Without further adu:

9) Kulipari: An Army of Frogs

Where can I watch it?: Netflix Exclusive

Why is it worth my time?: A stellar voice cast including Josh Keaton, Keith David, Charlie Adler, and Mark Hamill–just to name a few.  Character designs by Greg Guler, and snappy writing and direction from Tad Stones.  This is an all around strong show that is tons of fun to watch.  It’s biggest weakness is it is a touch formulaic (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing) but the writing, characters, and animation make up for it.

8) Milo Murphy’s Law

Where Can I Watch It?: Disney Channel, Disney XD, Disney XD App

Why is it worth my time?: From the creative team behind Phineas and Ferb comes the series about Milo Murphy.  The descendant of Edward Murphy, Milo is a afflicted with his curse.  For Milo, anything that CAN go wrong, always WILL go wrong.  What makes it interesting is that Milo goes about his life crazy-prepared, and with an infectiously positive attitude.  Not hurt by the fact that the titular character is voiced by non other than “Weird” Al Yankovic.  With the writing team of Phineas and Ferb, and a star like Weird Al on your billing, naturally many episodes have a fun musical number.  This show is sure to lift your spirits if you’re just having a Milo Murphy kind of day.

7) Star vs. The Forces of Evil

Where can I watch it?: Disney XD, Disney XD App, Hulu (Season 1 only, as of 12/25/16)

Why is it worth my Time? This fun little show has really started growing the beard since its debut last year.  With an ongoing mystery about Star’s family history underlying the second season, one definitely gets the feeling that much more is going on beneath the surface.

6) Voltron: Legendary Defender

Where can I watch it?: Netflix Exclusive

Why is it worth my time?: I was never a fan of the original Voltron.  It was before my time. But hearing Josh Keaton–One of my favorite voice actors–Sing the praises of this show over and over again on twitter got me hyped.  Nor was I to be disappointed, for this show was a treat.  There’s distinct nods to the Classic show–Which again, I never saw, but I NEVER once felt like I was missing anything important.  Indeed, I enjoyed every second of this show’s first season, and the amazing cliffhanger it left us on.  I never had any doubts that it would get a second season, and I can’t wait to actually catch that season next month.

5) Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir

Where can I watch it?: Nickelodeon, iTunes, Netflix (Starting February 14th)

Why is it worth my time?: I hadn’t heard of this show before a few weeks ago, but now I feel like I seriously missed out.  After after asking some friends, they heartily recommended this French Cartoon.  I dove right into it.  The show is very formulaic, but makes up for it with a great mythology, fun characters, and a downright adorable two-person love square (in which the titular heroes are in love with each other, but due to being ignorant of each others secret identities are in love with the wrong personas, preventing them from actually hooking up) Season 2 drops in May, and promises a shakeup of the status quo dominating the formulaic nature of the episodes, and I can’t wait to see it.

4) Steven Universe

Where can I watch it?: Cartoon Network, Cartoon Network App, Hulu

Why is it worth my time?: This show continues to grow an already impressive beard, and it doesn’t show any signs of stopping.  It’s become rather famous within Nerd Circles for the clever writing, long term plot planning, and amazing cast of characters.

3) Star Wars: Rebels

Where can I watch it?: iTunes, Disney XD, Disney XD App

Why is it worth my time?: This show has been getting better and better each season.  The scrappy crew of The Ghost actually makes me give a crap about Star Wars, in ways I never expected.  As they face down the Empire, while exploring the deep, rich mythology available in the Star Wars Universe.  Bonus points in having some of the scariest villains on TV.  Darth Vader’s appearances on the show actually show why he was an effectively scary villain, delivering a curb stomp battle on our heroes every time he meets them.   And General Thrawn of the current season actually makes me feel like the Rebels have lost ground every time he appears on screen.  Bonus points for fans of the recent film installment Rogue One; that movie is littered with easter eggs and references to this series.  Most obviously?  Look for the Ghost fighting in the battle above Scarif.

2) Trollhunters

Where can I watch it?: Netflix Exclusive

Why is it worth my time?: From the brilliant mind of Guillermo del Toro comes a coming-of-age story that, Quite frankly, is everything I look for in a fantasy series.  This is the show that I want to watch when I think I want to watch a fantasy series.  Starring the late Anton Yelchin as Jim Lake Jr, this show features an all star cast of multi-faceted heroes, villains, and lots of…Grey areas.  I cannot praise this show enough.  It only arrived on Netflix two days ago (as of the writing of this post) and it is one of the best animated shows of the year.  The season finale had me in tears at the end.  And the cliffhanger promises even more great fantasy in the next season (which I very much hope we get, even if del Toro will have to recast the lead due to Anton Yelchin’s sad and unfortunate passing.  Every episode is dedicated to his memory)

1) Gravity Falls

Where can I watch it?: Hulu, iTunes

Why is it worth my time?: Gravity Falls remains my second favorite animated show of all time (Though Trollhunters came very close to knocking it down to third.) and it came to an incredibly satisfying conclusion in the early part of this year.  Creator Alex Hirsch chose to end the show on a very high note, closing all of the major story arcs, while still leaving quite a few mysteries left for the fans to decipher.  (Literally in many cases) This is a show about Family, with amazing writing, awesome voice work (much provided by creator Alex Hirsch himself) and a deep, rich inner mythology, this show will be one that I return to again and again.

And that’s it.  Those are the Nine Shows I enjoyed the most from this hellhole of a year known as 2016.  I hope that these little blurbs encourage you to check out at least one of these shows.  Or even all of them.  And I hope that they bring you the same joy that they’ve brought me this year.

God Bless, and have a Merry Christmas,

~~The Disney Wizard.
