Side note: Sandwiches were added because in at least two of their scenes together they are eating sandwiches and once Red told Jackie to make him a sandwich. And also because of a in the works fanfic I have :)
MVP: Terry Bradshaw (17/30, 318 yards, 4 tds, 1 int)
The 2nd matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and the Pittsburgh Steelers. This time the Cowboys were the reigning champions. The matchup of quarterbacks Terry Bradshaw and Roger Staubach is still the only one in Super Bowl history to feature two quarterbacks with two Super Bowl victories. This is widely believed to be the Super Bowl to propel this game into its status as “The Unofficial American Holiday” because of the 2 great teams, the many Hall of Famers, and how competitive it was.
Bradshaw’s accuracy was clinical throughout. He threw 3 first half TDs to give the Steelers a 21-14 halftime lead. In the 3rd quarter, the fast scoring was slowed down by the 2 great defenses. However, the Cowboys managed to drive to the Steeler 10 yard line. On 3rd down, Roger Staubach found TE Jackie Smith wide open in the end zone and lofted a pass which the Hall of Famer dropped. The moment is forever enshrined with the Verne Lundquist call, “Bless his heart. He’s got to be the sickest man in America.” The Cowboys had to settle for a FG to bring the score to 21-17.
The Steelers then scored 14 unanswered points. The Cowboys rallied to score 14 of their own but an unsuccessful onside kick attempt with 22 seconds left sealed their fate and the Steelers won their 3rd Super Bowl title.
