APRIL 23: Bill Potts becomes the Doctor’s new companion (2016)

On this day in 2016, the BBC announced that actress Pearl Mackie would be playing a starring role in the next season of Doctor Who as the Doctor’s new companion, Bill Potts. The announcement was soon followed up by a second revelation – that Bill would also be the Doctor’s first LGBT companion! If you’ve never had a Doctor Who phase, let me assure you that there are millions of lesbians whose inner fourteen-year-old selves are crying tears of joy right now.

The Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie) pose together outside of the famous TARDIS (x).

Although the television series has featured bisexual characters in the past, such as Captain Jack Harkness and River Song, the introduction of Bill Potts was the first time a series regular and a fully-fledged companion was shown to be a part of the LGBT community. An interview with Pearl Mackie on March 31, 2017 confirmed that Bill would in fact be a lesbian character; Pearl says,

“It shouldn’t be a big deal in the 21st Century. It’s about time isn’t it? That representation is important, especially on a mainstream show…It’s important to say people are gay, people are black - there are also aliens in the world as well so watch out for them. I remember watching TV as a young mixed race girl not seeing many people who looked like me, so I think being able to visually recognise yourself on screen is important. [Being gay] is not the main thing that defines her character - it’s something that’s part of her and something that she’s very happy and very comfortable with.”

As a matter of fact, Bill’s sexuality was revealed in just her second line of dialogue in the April 15th season premiere, where she commented on running into a girl who she found to be “beautiful.” The audience reception to Bill Potts as the new companion has been glowing so far, and I don’t know about you, but I am excited to see where this new historic lesbian character ends up in the Doctor Who history books.

ohhh

I was, tbh, a bit aprenhensive about the inclusion of the Mondas Cybermen, because they felt like a pointless fanservic/y throwback….(just use your current cyberman mythology! it s what i thought)

but, Im only realizing now that, they will be involved in Twelves regeneration, meaning it will all be one giant Tenth Planet parallel. That makes it less pointless throwback and more meaningful reference to past canon.

Im a bit excited about it now!
