“Chaplin Changes! Can You?”

Gotta love the advertising campaign for Monsieur Verdoux. Chaplin was so associated with the Little Tramp that it must have come as a major shock when he decided to play a serial killer! These posters try their best to ease the audience into a newer kind of Chaplin movie. He had dealt with dark topics before (cannibalism in The Gold Rush for one thing), but never anything as vicious as this and never with a central character who so delicately toes the line between monstrosity and sympathy.
