chapelle royale de versailles

Royal Chapel of Versailles, May 2016. by Sabrina Danielle.

Photographed when I visited the Chateau de Versailles, France. The Sun King (Louis XIV) loved music and dance and thus had a gigantic gilded organ in this royal chapel where the King and his family would hold mass.

Please do not remove my credit.

The private Royal Chapel at the Petit Trianon of Versailles is so appropriate in its simplicity and modesty, it moves me thinking of Marie-Antoinette in solitude mourning the loss of her beloved son here in the last days of Chateau under the Ancien-Regime. Thanks for the additional photos Mr P. N. Price.

In 2015, the Chateau de Versailles hosted a concert in the Chapelle Royale which recreated two 19th century requiems composed to honor the memory of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette: Cherubini’s Requiem in C Minor in honor of Louis XVI which premiered in 1817, and Charles-Henri Plantades’ ‘Messe des morts’ in honor of Marie Antoinette, which premiered in 1823, 30 years after her death.

The live performance of these two works was recorded and will be released at the end of this month; notably, this is the first recording of Charles-Henri Plantades’ 'Messe des morts.’
