Martin Luther King wasn't a social justice ally.

Cesar Chavez didn’t cry about white privilege on the Internet.

Nelly McClung didn’t christen herself a misandrist.

Harvey Milk did something with his life besides whine.

Pierre Trudeau wasn’t in it for the ally cookies.

     Dear “social justice allies”-

I’m sorry.  Your cause is (arguably) noble, but just what the hell do you think you’re going to accomplish by whining like a two-year-old on Tumblr?  If you see something that you want to change, you’re already half way there- now get off your ass and actually change it.

Don’t tell me that you can’t do it because of white/male/cis/straight privilege.  Don’t tell me that you don’t have the resources to make a difference.  What resources did the slaves who escaped to freedom have?  What about the girls in Afghanistan who’ve had their fleshed burned off by husbands twice their age and not only lived to tell the tale, but made their voices heard the world over?

Newsflash: those are the kinds of people who really don’t have the resources to make a difference, and yet they managed to.  Strictly because you live in North America and have the privilege of being able to cry your poor little heart out on the Internet all day long means you have more resources and more opportunities than anyone ever needs.

So shut up and do something.

If you think you can, you’re right.  If you think you can’t, you’re also right.
