Happiness!!

amk-hollic’s 100 day J-rock challenge

Day four: A J-Rock song that changed your outlook on life in some way.

Kimura Kaela: Happiness!!

I had to dive deep in my memory for this song. Listening to it now gives me a more intense feeling than I had at any moment in the past. It’s amazing to think that this, who already gave me intense emotions, is giving me more. I’m grateful to this song. I was 16 or something when I first heard this song. I think she was an artist that was on my recommended on my last.fm and on a forum… I can’t remember much. I never dived into her music either, since I couldn’t find much of it. Kimura Kaela is one of those artists I always meant to get back into but I never did. To make up for it, I’m currently torrenting all her work.

My goal with this day was to chose a song that wasn’t set against a romantic backdrop. My other choices were Sunny by the Back Horn and Okujyo ni Nabotte by the pillows. I feel I went back on my word upon rereading the lyrics to this song, but it feels the most correct. This song gave me a sense of hope that stayed with me. Everything that’s happened in my life is for a reason and makes me a more solid human being, is what this song taught me. My history with this song isn’t dramatic, this song didn’t save me from anything, but it did remind me to always look forward positively in an age where you can’t possibly imagine the future. Maybe it helped me understand the concept of “fate.”

I want to be wrapped in happiness
All the time, now and always
You must understand
What this tiny feeling is like, yeah!!

Morning and noon and night and now
If you’re not feeling enough
Don’t feel sad
Close your eyes and listen quietly

You
Even wink
At this trivial life

Dreaming and singing laughing
Crying and dancing
Falling in love
Every little thing adds up
I think when you put them all together it’s enough
I’ll have every time in common with you

I can never, not now, not ever
Say it well
But in this short situation
Even looking at each other is important, don’t you think?

Even if I get knocked down
In the cold town
You make it go away

Dreaming and singing laughing
Crying and dancing
Falling in love
Every little thing adds up
I think when you put them all together it’s enough
I’ll have every time in common with you

Once we get through today
Tomorrow will probably be the same

Dreaming and singing laughing
Crying and dancing
Falling in love
Every little thing adds up
I think when you put them all together it’s enough
I’ll have every time in common with you

Dreaming and singing laughing
Crying and dancing
Falling in love
Every little thing adds up
I think when you put them all together it’s enough
I’ll have every time in common with you

There’s a way to rescue me, even if it’s small!!

Please feel
Your happiness!!!

Kaela…….カエラ。。。

What do I say about this girl? How funny she is? How musically talented she is? How incredibly adorable she is without losing a stitch of credibility for being a sugar-onna? What chances she took with her hair, her words, her fashion before it was truly popular to do so in most Japanese circles? What about the fact she is actually friends with other popular artist like they chill around at the koen at night as if they were still regular kids, doing the things young people usually do when they can go anywhere they want without people knowing their faces or seeing their own plastered someplace? Someone you just want to be near because you they’ll just spew good time if in enough feet of her vicinity?

Say what you will about her change in sound from her self titled debut to he latest installment, Hocus Pocus, but I think a lot of fans miss the point of what’s important. It’s not her style that’s the issue, it’s the sound. It’s her voice. It’s what she want’s to say. Now if that’s happy one album, ok. If it’s somber and contemplative the next album or, hell, the next track then let it be the way it must.

It’s always a difficult task to drop a perfect album. As a musician versed in production and sales you understand some things are made to be put in a maxi single and some are designed to meant to benefit the true album. The Japanese structure of musical albums is incredibly backwards and destroyed the idea of the ‘complete work’ because the playing up of singular tracks off an album just drives for money makers and keeps a person’s name on the tongue of the paying public.

Does this system work? Yes. Why? Cause most won’t argue against a system. Is that right? No, on both ends. However, no one want’s to mess up a 'good’ thing.
