cause snape said that

OH MY GOD YOU'RE SUCH A HORRIBLE PERSON REPOSTING THAT FAVE SNAPE MOMENTS!! WHAT ABOUT HIS LOVE FOR LILY?? HE HAD SO BAD LIFE NO WONDER HE WAS MEAN TO PEOPLE. ARE YOU DEMON OR SOMETHING DON'T YOU HAVE FEELINGS

Okay I’ll address this because I got SO many messages after reblogging that

Snape was a textbook definition self proclaimed ‘Nice Guy’

He wanted Lily to date him but she just wanted to be friends

He wasn’t okay with that, so he makes derogatory comments about her blood status, called her racist slurs and joined a supremacist group that literally kill people of her kind. He was always a pureblood supremacist, but allowed her to be the exception to the rule, essentially saying “You aren’t like those other dirty mudbloods and muggles” Don’t forget, calling someone a mudblood is the wizarding world equivalent of using the n word - he was a racist bigot from the get-go.

He lusted after Lily, but he did not respect her. When she found love and happiness with James, rather than being happy for her he instead selfishly delved deeper into Dark Arts.

Verbal, emotional, mental (and, in the movies, physical) abuse to Harry, an orphan who has also been raised in an abusive home, simply because he looked like and reminded him of his dead childhood enemy.

He then becomes a grown ass man who BULLIES children (remember when Draco cursed Hermione so her teeth grew down to her chin and Snape said he said she looked the same? Causing her, a 14-year-old girl to run away and cry while he smirked and laughed along with Malfoy?? Or the fact that, despite having his parents tortured into insanity by a death eater, the thing Neville feared most in the whole world was Snape??!). Harry coming to Hogwarts should have been Snape’s perfect opportunity to make peace with the past and make up for his horrible treatment of others, not a chance to take out all of his friendzoned frustration and bully a child.

He tries to have Sirius’s soul sucked out by dementors despite knowing he was completely innocent. When he doesn’t get his way, he is frustrated and decides to get Remus (the best teacher the school has seen in years, coincidentally in the position Snape has always wanted but never been granted) fired because of a schoolboy grudge from over a decade ago.

What about when Harry (a 14 year old) is being picked on and isolated in fourth year because of the tournament, and Snape eggs it on?

Snape had glided over to their desk while they were talking. The whole class was now looking around at them; Malfoy took the opportunity to flash POTTER STINKS across the dungeon at Harry.

“Ah… reading magazines under the table as well?” Snape added, snatching up the copy of Witch Weekly. “A further ten points from Gryffindor… oh but of course…” Snape’s black eyes glittered as they fell on Rita Skeeter’s article. “Potter has to keep up with his press cuttings…”

The dungeon rang with the Slytherins’ laughter, and an unpleasant smile curled Snape’s thin mouth. To Harry’s fury, he began to read the article aloud.

“Harry Potter’s Secret Heartache… dear, dear. Potter, what’s ailing you now? ‘A boy like no other, perhaps…’"

Harry could feel his face burning. Snape was pausing at the end of every sentence to allow the Slytherins a hearty laugh. The article sounded ten times worse when read by Snape. Even Hermione was blushing scarlet now.

Snape was not some heroic, pitiable, tormented martyr. He is a petty, merciless bully, with disgusting actions, and so not worthy of Albus’s middle name.

I don’t think his “always” love for Lily is a healthy or real love. If you truly loved a person, would you practically torture their only child for seven years?

When Snape heard the Potters were in danger, Snape asked for Lily to be spared while James and Harry died. When James realised they were in danger, he threw himself in the way in attempt at saving Lily and Harry. Knowing that Lily died to protect her son, you’d think Snape, the man supposedly so in love with her, would at least be decent to that child? Rather than making his already miserable and difficult life more so?

Snape and James were both immature teenagers with a crush on the same girl. They both were rejected, but the difference is in how they each responded. James changed his character and became a better person, Snape remained that same bigoted greaseball and grew up to become an adult who bullied eleven year olds who he was entrusted to educate. He also drastically favours his own (commonly elitist) house, showing preference even to Crabbe and Goyle over actually competent and willing students from Gryffindor.

He showed remorse and regret for his actions ONLY when he suffered consequences. He freely used racial slurs and only apologised when he accidentally said it to Lily, whom he wanted to love him. He cared about the Dark Lord’s decision to go after the Potters only because of Lily, he did not care if James and the baby died. He felt bad about relaying the prophecy only because of Lily’s death, not James’.

He’s a complex and well written, very human character, but not a decent person in my books.

Veal and Venison

Dear Harry,

If you are reading this it means I died. I learned from Sirius about what doubts you have regarding your parents and I really do not want you thinking about those things about your parents. They were nineteen, and your father has just pulled himself out of his ass, and he was young, but your mother loved him. Trust me when I say, I know, she always did, in some way that grew and grew over the years but it was love, nevertheless.

You see, Harry, love is not a feeling you can help. But it is something that requires a choice. Your mother chose to love your father because she wanted to, because he was James Potter and he had been the love of her life, who grew to be a great man.

Your father chose to love your mother, despite her being Muggle-born, because she was Lily Evans, and she was never afraid of him, and she just treated him like plain old James.

All you have seen are memories of Severus about your parents, and as good a man as Severus became, he was, nevertheless, blinded about the relationship between your parents during their youth and refused to see what has been clear to everyone from the first day James and Lily Potter hexed each other in their first year.

You see, your parents, loved each other very much, even before they were ready to admit it…

Fourth Year

“You know James, I could never understand why you would never, ever, show this side of yourself to the world. I just don’t get why you have to be a bullying toe rag all the time. Expecto Patronum!”

Lily sighed in frustration as a thin, silver wisp erupted from her wand.

James shook his head. “I already told you Lily, just relax. This isn’t like Charms or Transfiguration, you have to…”

“Just do it, I know that James! I just can’t seem to-”

James held Lily’s hand from behind and wrapped one arm around her waist.

“Leave this moment, think of the best day of your life, the happiest day…”

“When I received my letter from Professor-, why are you laughing!”

Lily huffed in resentment but slowly leaned her head back against James shoulders. “Everyone uses that memory, thinking that is when they are happiest. Going to school is not your happiest day Evans, it’s not anyone’s. Leaving I could get, but entering? No, it’s not entering the school Evans its what lies within the school. It’s not about knowing as much as doing. The happiest day of your life, is when you finally look at yourself, and like what you see. Expecto Patronum.”

Lily smiled softly at the beautiful stag that pranced around her, begging her to touch his antlers. “What are you thinking of when you create him?”

“You. I’m always happy when I’m with you.”

“James, please.”

“It was the first time we talked without you shouting at me, and without me hitting on you. It was after our second year, when Slughorn partnered us up for the brewing of a simple cure for boils and we went through the whole process without bickering because for once I was not acting like a prat because I badly needed a good grade in Old Sluggy’s subject. And after class, you walked me back to the common room and we talked. You talked. And you called me James, and we were friends ever since. I was happy. That was my happiest moment.”

Lily closed her eyes and clutched the hand James rested on her stomach, and closing her eyes raised her wand and the beautiful outline of a doe, blinding white, as white as his stag emerged. The doe’s graceful legs lead her to a trot until she reached the stag, and they playfully pranced around together until James nudged Lily and their patronuses faded into the night.

“A doe, huh.”

“You said to think about my happiest moment.”

“And?”

“You are it.”

James flushed and said nothing. Lily found it endearing that James could be quiet around her.

So, you see Harry, your mom never hated your dad. She got annoyed with him a lot. There was never a day she was not annoyed and they got into shouting matches often enough, but your dad lets your mom scream it off her chest and when she’s done, he usually offers her some trinket and she finds it so ridiculous they end up going back to the way they were.

We all knew they loved each other before they did. Your mom and dad never dated anyone else apart from each other. And you don’t need me to tell you how hard it is for popular Quidditch players from popular families to dodge a plethora of women chasing after them - such is the fate of the Potter men.

What happened at the tree in fifth year was something Severus held to his heart very dearly, because that was when Lily made her choice between him and your dad. Lily may have told Severus that she did not like James Potter because he was a bully and a toe rag but she never meant it, in a way that you alienate your father…

Fifth Year

I really am sorry…

Lily, I cannot even begin to…

Dear Lily, Can you please…

I know nothing I say will change anything, but know that I am still sorry, for what Snape said to you, and for causing a rift between you but not for what I have done. I’m sorry that I am not sorry for it though, if it helps.

He stared for a moment at the words he wrote on his parchment with the self-inking muggle quill Lily called a pen when she gave it to him last year so they could pass notes in secret, without the noisy scratch of the quills on parchment.

Behind him, he heard a derisive snort and a sigh, as he waited anxiously for Lily’s reply.

Will you stop bullying people so much then? I mean, James, you have become so much more than this bully. YOU are a GOOD person, and I really hate it when I call you names (because I am so guilty) but there are things you do that just…

Lily watched as her message vanished, finding herself unable to finish it. She was angry at James for what he did to Severus, but the thing was Severus was not entirely defenceless. James did not attack from the back, he was too much of a Gryffindor bombom idiot for that. Severus had done many serious damage to James too. He doesn’t always fight clean.

I will stop bullying. I was a prat as a child Lil, you know that, you screamed me deaf for it, but the thing is Lil, I can’t bloody well take the insults Snivellus throws my way without a fight right?

She shook her head. That was the problem about James, he always felt it was necessary to fight back, no matter the cost.

James, pick your battles please.

She saw James’ shoulder droop and felt mad at herself for feeling sorry for James who, once more, let his arrogance get in the way of his brain. He was wrong, and he should be sorry for what he did, because if he didn’t that would mean he was just as bad as Snape.

I feel guilty, that I bullied Snape when we were younger, just because he was in Slytherin, and I was too much of a prideful punk that can’t admit I am awfully jealous of him because he had you. And I am sorry to him for making his life even more miserable, especially with his situation at home. I was a prat, and the Giant Squid was a better option than me. I am sorry for constantly harassing you when we were younger, always finding the need to impress you being equated to me acting like a prat and bloody hell, I am sorry for all the other idiotic things I have done with Moony and Padfoot and Wormtail.

But I can never be sorry about defending you Lily. Not once.

Lily felt her heart melt at James’ words. She knows how guilty he is about his past actions, and she knows he is growing up into the best man he can be, and she knows just how much he cares about everything and anything and she knows that he is a good person, but he is often lead by his arrogance.

Before she can comfort him, however, a thin, bony hand, clasped the piece of parchment she was writing on and brought it away from her. She looked up to see the menacing eyes of Minerva McGonagall reading her and James’ exchange with pursed lips.

“I’m sure, Miss Evans and Mister Potter, that you thought it would be quite intelligent to pass notes whilst I am trying to make you change your animals into goblets, however, I most certainly do not. In any case, my class is not  a place to announce your undying love for each other. Ten points from Gryffindor.”

Lily winced as James smirked up at McGonagall. “Come on Professor, you know you’re impressed with how Evans and I charmed the parchment.”

McGonagall’s lips twitched but she maintained her stern stance even as humour danced in her eyes. “If only you would use your talents in my class, Potter, I would have gotten less problems.”

James tapped his owl with his wand thrice and murmured Vera Verto and his snowy white owl changed into a brilliant crystal goblet with red and gold  glass winding around the stem. “Like that professor?”

McGonagall held her stern look and raised her hands into the air. “Five points to Gryffindor and Potter, Evans? Take your love affair outside my classroom. I never wish to see your love notes ever again!”

The whole class sniggered as Lily flushed as red as her hair.

They were the best people one could ask for as students and friends. They were not afraid you see, very brave, very noble. And they were the envy of everyone in town.

It is very rare that a love such as theirs would exist, and you are very lucky Harry, to have them as parents.

No two people loved more than they did. I hope you know that. These are two of my fondest memories of your parents, Harry, and I hope you find some comfort here.

Your son, James, takes after his grand father very much. It seems as if I am forever cursed to be dogged by Potters for the rest of my life.

I wanted you to know your parents this way Harry, the way I knew them, and I wanted to tell you when I died so you won’t have to badger me about it.

You have great parents, Mr. Potter. It has been my greatest honour to have met them.

Take care of your family and send my regards to Hermione and Ron.

Sincerely,

Minerva McGonagall

Headmistress, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

P.S.

I was a cat when your mom and dad had that conversation under the tree. Albus and I had a laugh.

Harry smiled as he folded the letter and held the two vials of memories tight in his hand. His pensieve is still playing his mom, young, with her bright hair obscuring her equally bright face as his dad turned and winked at her.

They were in love he thought.

Bloody hell.

Sofia was really excited for her third year. Her uncle was teaching their DADA class, which was actually one of her favorite classes. She always loved listening to him talk, lecture about dark characters. She practically skipped to class one day.She sat in class and Harry turns to her and she shrugs. They knew the moon was the night before, but they didn’t know what the plan was going to be. Suddenly snape came billowing through the classroom. When She opened to the the page and saw they were studying werewolves, Sofia paled. She knew whatever this class was, it wasn’t good. After hermione stopping arguing and as Snape started the lecture on how to identify and kill werewolves, Sofia felt lightheaded and knew her brother was angry. “Pr-professor Snape?” She says weakly. “I-I don’t feel well. M-may I go to the hospital wing?” She stutters. Snape knew why she was like this and said no. Other classmates of hers noticed the pale of her skin and that she looked ill and caused a commotion until snape said “Fine leave.” Sofia got up. “Not you, Potter,” She hears, Knowing harry probably stood to follow her.

Sofia runs to the courtyard and lays on the warmed grass, trying to get her head to stop spinning, and her food to stay down.
