caudillo

I’m Alex!! A bisexual venezolana. Here I am holding the flag that came off of my great-grandfather’s boat, La Garza. Underneath that I’m holding mi abuela’s lighter, and wearing her necklace and cross.  And then there’s some goofy selfies I took today!

I’m mixed, and whitepassing. Stuck inside all the time with a chronic illness, my skin is extra fair. But my eyes are dark and my lips are full and sometimes the old latinas will see me in the store and they’ll know. They’ll ask me “Your mother, is she from South America?”. “No, my father is Venezuelan. My grandmother came from Caracas.” You can see my country in my eyes. You can see the caudillos and Caracazo and coups. But my skin is white, a prize for being personally untouched by it all. I could keep that prize to myself. I could forget about Maduro. I could be white for the rest of my life. But I won’t keep my prize of privilige to myself. My white skin can be used to shine a light on my dark brothers and sisters who face racism everyday because their skin is a beautiful reflection of where they come from. My white skin will help me be listened to, and I won’t stop talking about Venezuela and the other Latin American countries. I won’t stop using my skin to spotlight the latinxs that are kept in the dark, that are deemed too little to be seen. That’s what mi abuela would want me to do. That’s what I will do. I will also use my privilege to bring attention to LGBT latinxs. My aunt is getting married in August. She could be shot in the street for holding her wife’s hand. She could be shot in the street for speaking Spanish. That is the unique intersection we are in, a crossroads of danger. But we are here, and we are fighting. We are strong. None of us has to fight alone. We are together, bonded by love and danger and pride. I will do everything in my power to strengthen that bond. We will grow our love and visibility. We are here. We are loud. We are loved.

Thank you all so much from the bottom of my heart. Thank you so much for participating in lgbt&latinx&loud, for giving me a platform to celebrate all of you. I am so truly grateful to everyone who helped make this event as big as it has become, and for working together to create a safe and loving environment.

Somos amados!
