Today, we woke up at 7 a.m. to go to the Vatican, in order to beat the line to get into St. Peter’s Basilica. Success! The church was beautiful, with altar decorations, including the baldacchino, Cathedra Petri and Gloria, provided by Bernini. The paintings on the ceiling, particularly around the oculists, were particularly lovely.
The basilica also contained something that I didn’t expect to see: Michelangelo's Pieta. I literally gasped upon spotting the piece; I should have known that it was located inside of St. Peter’s!
After going inside of the Basilica, I climbed over five hundred steps to the top of the Duomo. It felt as though I was going to die, but the view was totally worth it.
Feast of the Chair of St. Peter in Rome - February 22
Collect: O God, Who, committing to blessed Peter, Thine apostle, the keys of the heavenly kingdom, didst bestow on him the pontifical function of binding and loosing, grant that, by the help of his intercession, we may be delivered from the bonds of our sins. Who livest and reignest with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God Forever and ever. R. Amen.
