People might criticize Wes Anderson for being style over substance. I say, fuck that notion. Fuck the notion for even being a notion. The scene with the carousel lights being Agatha in The Grand Budapest Hotel is everything I love about his movies. With a shift in aspect ratio, a colorful background, and focus on a lover’s smile, Anderson was able to convey that butterfly feeling you get in your stomach. Anderson techniques can get a bit flashy but it is still an extension of Anderson’s heart and soul.
