carolina sphinx moth

Parr Lane Critters: Tobacco hornworm caterpillar, on my sister’s prize tomato plant. This is the larval stage of the Carolina sphinx moth (Manduca sexta). This hornworm is similar in appearance to tomato hornworms (M. quinquemaculata, the larval form of the five-spotted hawkmoth). The larvae of both species thrive on tobacco, tomatoes, and other plants in the Solanaceae or nightshade family.
