My advice (assuming you’re on a budget) is to find a carbureted evo sportster from the mid 90s or later with less than 30k miles on it and pay no more than $3k for it. Be sure that it is in running & riding condition. If you can spend closer to $5-6K I’d say find an FXR or Dyna.

Ride like every person operating a 4 wheeled vehicle is trying to kill you.
Always wear a helmet. I don’t, but I should.
Take a riders course. I didn’t, but I should’ve.
Make sure you know how to pick up a tipped over motorcycle. Because you’re going to drop or lay down your motorcycle. And when you do, you’re going to have to pick it back up.
