I love the corolla/ae86 community, but I’m sick of the 4ag scene. I love the rotary engine, but I don’t mesh with the rx7 scene. I know what my favorite chassis is and I know what my favorite engine is. I’m on my third 4ac in my bae86 and 4a x 3 = ???
After I get Carolin back to Portland and repay my debts, I’m going to start sourcing parts and info to prep for a 12A swap into my 86. I need reliable torque and power in a small, carbureted package. I still love the 4AC but I don’t feel like it can handle the way I want to drive my 86. I’m not out to chase big power or run fast times on the strip, but at this point I gotta accept that the 4a is only practical as an eco commuter engine and I need something that actually wants to hit high revs, burn rich on high octane, and accepts turbocharging without a fuss.
I’m not pioneering anything here. This swap has been done in various forms by plenty of folks ranging from backyard enthusiasts to professional racers. What I need is info from those who have walked this path before me. What sort of transmission should I use? What modifications will I need to make to my motor mounts? Is it possible to avoid cutting and refabricating the trans tunnel? What layout and diameter of exhaust should I use? Can I find a 16~20 gal fuel tank that will fit if I cut out the spare tire well? What 4x114.3 lsd rear will best adapt to the gearing and powerband while reliably handling the immediate torque loads of a rotary?
