Yeah, William Shatner. Capt. James T. Kirk. He gets a lot of criticism for his ego, for being “all about William Shatner.”
So today, I went to a little comic con, even though I haven’t read comics in decades, specifically because this man, and Nichelle Nicholes, were gonna be there. And I went to Shatner’s panel to listen to him speak. (Went to Nichelle’s too, and that was a most precious experience.) But lemme just tell you a thing.
You know how these go. People line up, ask questions, Shatner talks, etc. So up comes a young man and his mom. Mom tells Shatner about her autistic son, how Shatner’s been an inspiration to him, and he’s in college now and doing well.
And Shatner says young man, what’s your name? Hank, he says. Hank, says Shatner, come up here so I can shake your hand. He asks about autism, about Hank’s experience with it, asks what he’s studying, what does he want to do with his life. He talks to this young man for a good 15-20 minutes, tells his mom this is a great young man you got here. Mom’s hovering and Shatner says mom, step back. Your son is doing awesome, he’s got this. You, he tells Hank, you are gonna go far. You’re gonna be whatever you want, you’re doing great.
He did not hurry. He did not try to rush Hank along, he joked with him, he joked with his mom, he answered his questions and they had a great talk.
This is not earth-shaking. It doesn’t make a him a saint. It was just a little moment at a con. But I thought it was beautiful. Good on ya, Captain Kirk.
