Canada's different.

People were bemused in Toronto when, after moving back to Canada for the first time in over 13 years, I had a sort of culture shock. Things are different here. Canadians and Americans both like to think that they are close enough to count to each other (though both countries have reasons they feel superior…mostly wrong ones, but fine).

Things are still just different enough In a way that - 7 years later - sometimes feels like gaslighting. Cultural references to specifically Canadian things from the years 1993-2006 are completely lost on me. It’s a language I just don’t speak. I nod and pretend sometimes, but a lot of the time I just say “That’s a thing?” and then listen to the explanation of yet another band, show, etc that I missed in my expat years (I consider these my repat years, btw, since I was actually born here).
