can't get enough of their amazing voices so i wanted this on my blog

anonymous asked:

Sell the raven cycle to me. Why should i read it? What's so good about it?

man that’s a tall order lemme do my best here

1. The characters are very difficult jigsaw puzzle people. They’re wedged in the middle of adulthood and childhood, and magical realism is sprinkled over top of that awkwardness so that we feel very situated in that exact space and time of lost & messing up & family not being enough anymore/friendship being all you can see. And it’s not just the main characters, it’s a spectrum of cameos from people so vivid that you could hitch a ride to a whole other series on their backs. It’s this mass of interconnected lovers and churchgoers and rich boys and school-haters and hard-asses and scared kids and witches and characters that don’t quite know whether to be alive or dead.

Every person is lovingly invented to be difficult to parse upon first glance. they’re magic-eye people. You know when you’re at the optometrist and they put down slides on their big ol’ eye contraption and ask you to tell them when things get clear? it’s kind of like that. You’ve gotta keep accumulating lenses and when it’s finally clear you realize you don’t know where or how the difference set in. And better yet, the characters feel that way too – you’ve got unreliable points of view from everyone from villains to leads to sentient forests, figuring each other out, growing and misunderstanding and loving from afar. Everything has a voice, even birds and trees. This book is made of too many voices in too many languages and all you can do is sit down and be very still and listen (jot that down)

2. The plot/magic in this book are compelling as all hell, and they wind and trip and fall, but it’s worth climbing in and letting the car speed so your head rattles or the magical forest turn you around until you get lost. It’s just the right balance of relatable teenaged disasters and wholly un-relatable living nightmares and hitmen and possession via nature and ghosts and old old old magicians. Somehow pizza with the gang transmutes quietly into burying the carcass of a monster, tennis during the day becomes deadly streaking car racing until someone wins or dies. The books never let up, they go and go and talk about how much they’re going and throw too much at you.

It’s frustrating actually, the way you’re breathless for four entire novels. There are so many loose ends that you start writing ways to tie them together in your head before you’ve even finished. Impossible things represent gritty reality at every turn, you have manifestations of real depression, escapism from real abuse, resentment of real neglectful parents. You have a mosaic of things that hurt so much that they’ve become magic so that we can stand to look at them. trc wants you to look at a kissing curse and a dead king and quietly put them aside until you need them again. If you only read the back of the book, you’re brushing fingers against a scapegoat for a host of things that are much realer.

3. The writing knows what it’s doing. It needles its way into pretentious territory, but I can’t pretend that trc didn’t burrow into my writing style and rearrange things. The writing feels like.. i don’t know man like you’re holding a beating heart in your hand and watching it sputter and try to keep going, and it’s fucking amazing to witness even though you know it can’t last forever. You can see the mechanism of it and gore of it, but you keep watching and waiting. There are so many plain little to the point sentences that fit into the grand scheme of things so perfectly that you just. sob. and there are so many intricate metaphors and frank magical descriptions and charming, human ways of saying something that isn’t charming or human.

It’s a hell of a series. It knows when to open the door, it trusts that you’ll come through it. It makes you hurt so bad for a friendship that hurtles down like an asteroid and ruins everything but you. It makes you feel a little better about whatever ancient welsh king you’re looking for, whatever night horror is ripping up your head space. It makes you dog-ear every other page because the dialogue is so unnecessarily clever and the descriptions sit right in your throat where you almost choke on them.

It’s not perfect. But it singlehandedly made me start reading again (heart in mouth 4 am reading, buying the ebook the second it comes out reading, crying at lines that shouldn’t be cried at reading), what put things in motion for me to make a funny little book blog called ravenvsfox

I can’t promise that you’ll like it, but I think the mess is beautiful & youthful and there are miles of slack to make it whatever you’d like. I hope you pick The Raven Boys up and see where they drive you in their stupid orange car.

Oh my word! Your first encounter drabble with Allen was absolutely amazing! I just found your blog and I love your writing!! So you also wrote headcannons for the face family with an independent, strong s.o, could you please do some with a shy, sweet, innocent s.o? I can't wait to readmore of your work!

((ahhh I’m so happy~ Thank you so so so much! My first headcanon was with the allies, so I’ll include all of them for this too. Again, thank you sooo much!))

2p!America/Allen F. Jones:
- He doesn’t believe someone so pure could be real in such a fucked up world.
- There must be some darkness in your heart!
- Al confronts you on it and… ends up making you cry (shame on you Al).
- So he tries to be nicer. Tries to understand you.
- And soon he understands that you need to be protected at all costs.
- Nobody’s gonna corrupt his little angel.
- You’re probably too shy to do anything about this, so he’ll continue working on his own accord.
- Eventually he’ll cross a line, and you’ll gather enough courage to tell him off (you go gurl).
- Al doesn’t take this very well. He’s just protecting you! You should be thankful! How dare you?!
- Riding on emotion, Al will lash out at you. That’s when he’ll see how absolutely terrified you look… and he’ll fall in love with that expression.
- After that, well… good luck.

2p!Canada/James Williams:
- He doesn’t really care
- until you show him some kindness
- then you’ve got him hooked.
- He wants more, so you’ll keep seeing him here and there and… well, everywhere.
- He wants to protect you, but he’s more discreet about it. You’ll never know it’s him watching over you from the shadows.
- James would continue building a relationship with you, trying to be as ‘normal’ as possible
- until something sent him over the edge (ex. a situation that put you in danger)
- It’s then he has a revelation and realises only he can keep you safe.
- He’ll take you somewhere remote and assure you it’s in your best interest, though he can’t help wondering if he’s being selfish…

2p!China/Xiao Wang:
- He thinks you’re adorable.
- Likes pushing you out of your comfort zone. He just wants you to have fun!
- Loves teasing you
- but if anyone else teases you, they’ll get their ass kicked.
- Sometimes Xiao gets annoyed by how kind you can be (you should only be kind towards him).
- He takes it upon himself to teach you the dangers of the world. Most people would say his methods are unconventional, but he just wants you to understand why he worries about you!
- Of course, before any real harm can come to you, Xiao swoops in and saves you (probably from some thugs who cornered you in an alleyway).
- If you still struggle to see his side of things, well, he just won’t let you outside. It’s too dangerous anyway, so you might as well stay inside. Don’t worry, he’ll take good care of you~

2p!England/Oliver Kirkland:
- He’s so in love.
- You make his lil heart melt all the time with your sweet words, your cute smile, and your little giggles~
- Oliver’s favourite thing to do is make you blush, which is ironic considering how easy it is to make him blush.
- He obsesses over how vulnerable you are. There’s no mercy for innocent little things like you.
- Despite you trying to reassure him, Oliver takes it upon himself to protect you from the world
- but soon all he’s doing is keeping you inside all day, insisting you don’t need to go outside for anything so long as you have him.
- You won’t confront him because confrontation is scary, and Oliver can be scary, too, so you decide to go out without saying anything.
- Bad idea.
- Oliver finds you while you’re out and drags you somewhere more private, accusing you of trying to leave him.
- He won’t listen to anything you have to say. He’ll just knock you out and take you home, where he can make sure you’re kept safe and sound.

2p!France/François Bonnefoy:
- He thinks you’re faking it.
- You’ll have to show him a bit of kindness before he would take any interest in you. And he wouldn’t be too nice in the beginning.
- He wouldn’t go out of his way, but he’d try finding any darkness within you.
- Eventually he’ll push just the right button and watch you break down… but there’s still no darkness.
- Francois will comfort you to the best of his abilities (probably just pat your head or something) and maybe utter a very quick apology. If you forgive him, he’ll be confused, but… relieved?
- Starts hanging out with you more whenever he has time.
- Being around you makes him feel good. He can’t explain why tho.
- He won’t do much else… unless someone tries moving in on you.
- Whether it’s a love interest or just a friend, Francois won’t stand for it. He wants you all to himself. Why should anyone else be blessed with your presence?
- He’s not very outspoken about this - or anything really - so it’s an internal battle that he eventually settles by keeping you shut away.
- You’re not being held captive, but it’s encouraged that you stay inside at all times. If you voice your doubts at all, Francois will use some pretty cruel manipulation against you. (”How much do you love your family/friends?”).

2p!Russia/Viktor Braginsky:
- He doesn’t really like you at first.
- He thinks you’re a wuss.
- Despite this, he’s always open to lending a hand whenever you need it.
- Eventually he realises there’s no real reason to dislike you. Maybe he was just being cautious in case you tried to stab him in the back.
- Viktor warms up to you, like a standoffish cat whose affection you finally earned.
- The more time Viktor spends with you, the more he sees how vulnerable you are.
- He comes to love your innocent personality, and the thought of anyone taking that away makes him anxious.
- He battles with his emotions behind a stoic face until he decides you’re safest under his care.
- Nothing causes him to snap, he just does what he decides is best and locks you away from the world.

Could I please request one where Bakugou & his s/o get into a heated argument & she starts crying, which puts a stop to it because he feels extremely guilty & it ends with him comforting her/them apologizing? I can't wait to see you and this amazing blog grow & be a part of it!! ❤️❤️❤️

Sure thing, sweetie! I really hope you enjoy this request and I’m sorry that I didn’t quite follow what you requested but I still hope you like it? and thank you so much for being a part of this experience with me! You are too kind, angel!♡

He was fucking mad and honestly, you could talk all you fucking wanted to but it wouldn’t change a goddamn thing. You were stubborn, he would almost say you were as fucking persistent as him but nobody is or would ever fucking be better than him, and he’d kill over and die before he admitted such a thing out loud.

[Reader’s POV]

The day was over at school and you texted Jughead for a meetup location. You were leaning against your locker tapping your foot to the beat of your music. The music lowered then raised indicating you had a notification. Looking back up you see Jug’s name pop up in your notification bar.

Jug the bug:

Meet me by my tree

You:

See you in a few

Putting your phone in your pocket you walk amongst the teens leaving the building. Headphones in so you didn’t have to hear the whispers. Opening the doors the autumn wind hits your face as it blows by. Taking a right you walk away from the entrance of the school. Stragglers passed by leaving school as you headed towards the big tree behind the bleachers.

A puff of smoke leaves Jughead’s lips as he leaned against the tree. He takes one last drag before putting it on the ground and smashing it with his shoe. The two of you exit through a secret path he told you about earlier in the day. Reaching up you take your earbuds out and turn your headphones off.

30 Day OTP Challenge (Bucky Barnes) Day Ten: Late night conversation

Note: Sadness, fluff, talk of children

Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Reader

Words: 1200

It was late in the night, going on about three in the morning and everyone was asleep except two people. (Y/N) was sitting up against the headboard of the bed reading away at a good novel while Bucky laid his head in her lap. He had just woken up from a nightmare and couldn’t sleep so (Y/N) was carding her fingers through his hair as she read. It was always what comforted him when he got nervous, or scared about the nightmares. Like she was brush away all the worry that bubbled in his mind with her fingers gently combing through his hair. “(Y/N)..” Bucky asked softly as she looks away from the pages and down to him. “Yes Love?” She asked as he sighed closing his eyes. “Um… I wanted to tell you that I overheard you talking to you to your friend today.” He mumbled.

“What about it?” She asked frowning softly as he picked at the sheets not meeting her gaze. “You were talking about kids and everything.” He said as (Y/N)’s heart dropped into her stomach. “Do you not what that?” She asked as her fingers stilled in his hair when he winced. “It’s not that I don’t… but I can’t have kids. The serum sort of messed that part of me up.” He whispered when (Y/N)’s eyes softened. “Oh Bucky, we don’t have to have kids off our own. We can adopt or we can get more animals.” She shrugged softly as he looked at her before sitting up. “But I can’t give you that family you were talking about.” He said looking broken when she slowly placed both of her hands onto his face to cup his cheek as she leaned forward kissing his nose.

“Bucky, you are my family. Mazey is my family.” She gestured to the sleeping collie at the foot of their bed. “This team is my family. Yes I want kids but we can adopt. We can do that. They might not physically be ours, but they’ll be ours through the love and affection we give to them.” She smiles placing her forehead against his. “Sometimes I wonder why you stay with me… Hearing the way you described me made me sound like I was something good.” He sighed when she suddenly gripped his jaw as his eyes widened seeing her eyes darken in anger. “Do you dare ever say that you aren’t good James Buchanan Barnes.” She said in a stern tone.

“But–” She pressed her lips to his to silence him. “Please, I want this. I want you, and I don’t want you any other way than the man sitting in front of me.” She said as he nods. “Okay okay. I’m sorry. It’s just… it was embarrassing to hear how highly you talked about me to your friends.” He mumbled as his face flustered when she grins. “Of course I talk highly of you, because I’m telling them the truth… and possibly rubbing it in their faces of how amazingly hot my boyfriend is.” She said as his face flushed enough more when he opened his mouth. “If you say you aren’t hot I’m gonna smack you.” She countered when his mouth shut causing her to laugh softly.

“I was gonna say that you are hot too.” He countered sticking his tongue out as she rolled her eyes. “Uh-Huh.” She said quirking an eyebrow. “Well I was… especially when you’re in my clothing.” He glanced down to his shirt that was on her body. “What I had nothing else. I am lazy and need to wash clothes.” She said when he chuckles. “I get Steve to do mine.” He said as she gasps in shock. “Bucky that is so–in genius! Dammit I didn’t think about it!” She exclaims causing him to let out a laugher as she smiles to him, happy to see that he was laughing. “Do I even want to know how you convinced him to do it for you?” She asked quirking an eyebrow.

“He use to do it when we were younger. At least that’s what he told me.” Bucky shrugs chuckling softly. “That sounds about right. My mom use to do it when I was younger.” She said before slowly she noticed that his eyes were glazed over when he sunk back down onto her lap. She grinned softly before resuming her fingers through his hair as he sighed in relief causing his eyes to flutter. “Were you serious about adopting?” He asked as she looks at him. “If you want to. Of course.” She said as he laid his metal arm over her calves when he sighed. “Do you think I’d be a good day?” He asked softly. Her heart clenched hearing the underlying brokenness in his tone.

“I think you’d be amazing Dad, you know why?” She asked as he glanced up to her when she smiled leaning closer to him. “Because you always have put everyone first.” She whispered kissing his forehead causing jolt of pain from stretching down. She sat up as Bucky smiled softly back before laying his head onto her thigh, noticing he couldn’t wipe the smile off even if he wanted to. “Why else?” He asked lazily growing even more sleepy as she ran her fingers through his hair, it definitely was his weakness. “Well since you can’t have kids of your own I think you’ll love these ones even more. Make sure they know you chose them, because you love them unconditionally. You will be a protective father, someone who will make sure they never get hurt. Someone they can call… Dad.” She whispered unaware of the tears that were flooding in his eyes at her words.

“You think so?” He asked softly not trusting his voice any louder so she didn’t know that he was crying. “Because, you’ve always protected Steve. He told me how much of a father figure and best friend you were to him. Always keeping him out of trouble. Always saving him when he got into fights. You’ll be the best Dad to ever exist. You know what?” She asked as she pulls the covers over his shoulders. “Why?” He asked wiping his eyes. “Because you’ve gone through so much and come out strong. You are going to be not only their Dad, but their Hero.” She grins when his arms wrapped around her waist as she looks down seeing his small trembles.

“I love you so much.” He whispered burying his face onto her thigh as she smiles while continuing to card her fingers through his hair. “I love you too.” She whispered before she looks outside the window to the night sky. She starts to sing an old song her mother would sing to her whenever she was younger as she felt Bucky’s hold loosen. She glanced down seeing Bucky’s eyes were shut and his breathing was evened when she leaned back on the headboard. “Goodnight my love.” She whispered softly while she continued to hum the melody before picking back up her book to pick up right where she left off as her hand rested softly on his head.

Ways to Cheer Yourself Up (When wanting to be alone) - 50 top things to do
  • 1. Go ON Tumblr, believe it or not, we don't care where you're from, what you do, how you're being you, as long as you are being you, you're pretty much welcomed on here. That's why i love it. Unless of course you are homophobic or judgemental or ignorant - then the people will speak for themselves, we look out for each other here.
  • 2. Read Books; escapism is a wonderful thing
  • 3. Listen to music; and no - not the sad, 'ALL BY MYSELF' type music, but the kickass songs like 'I will Survive' or 'Loser Like Me' just celebrate yourself for being awesome, because we know you are; even if others don't; especially then actually.
  • 4. Become your own superhero. Every single one of you have a talent or a dream. Follow up on that talent/dream. YOU ARE WORTH IT, and you can be whoever you want to be.
  • 5. DISNEY MOVIES. Unless you absolutely hate bursting out into song - better cut of highschool musical and glee while were at this, then Disney is the best pick me up ever.
  • 6. Watch your favourite TV shows. Remind yourself why life can be awesome. Watching your fav characters usually means you can relate to them.
  • 7. Go on walks - it's very pretty outside, and sometimes our heads can be overloaded with information or stress, I advise calming music and a nice walk outside in comfortable clothes.
  • 8. Have a diary. A friend of mine recently bought me one, and it's a godsend because all the anger, or emotions I feel, I try to put in the diary rather than putting it out on others. It also calms you down. I feel better when I write.
  • 9. Speaking of writing...if you enjoy it- WRITE. Writing is a wonderful way to escape. You can put all your emotions into your characters and they just come to life. I tend to do that when I'm stressed.
  • 10. If writing is not your thing then bake. I've actually ironically read in a fan fiction where a character would bake when stressed and try out new recipes, this character tried making butterbeer; maybe be adventurous; have a food blog or something to keep you occupied.
  • 11. Be With Your Pets - Pets are loyal creatures, and they love you, even when you're being a pain in the ass, and I hear they're very good listeners.
  • 12. Now I don't know about you, but I LOVE Musicals. If you are a musical fanatic like me and you're feeling a little down, my dears; listen to those awesome voices, because sometimes we just - need - a break (Also, if you haven't watched RENT, watch it - NODAYBUT TODAY...or Starkid...Starkid make the most funniest musical parodies, even if you don't like musicals I suggest it, and if you're not enjoying their YouTube Channel, then I'll eat my own hat).
  • 13. ASK ME ANYTHING. If you really want to talk to somebody but you don't want to talk to people you know and you just want to get things out, my ASK box is always open.
  • 14. Find a hobby. If you don't really want to talk to anybody, that's okay, sometimes we need to just have some 'me time'. In my me times, I usually deactivate from Facebook, and just focus on things that make me happy. Like; Puzzles, Sudoku, Games, writing, cooking, singing, whatever it is...travelling even. Enjoy yourself.
  • 15. Travel. Maybe being stuck in the same place is the problem, maybe you're head wants to be in a place where it can ACTUALLY THINK.
  • 16. Go Hiking. I suppose Hiking is similar to walking but if you're an outdoor person, this is a great way to clear your head and to feel fresh.
  • 17. Hit The Gym. Or even do your own exercises. I like to walk - do crunches, and I love Zumba. I love dancing. If you love being active, this is also another way to clear your mind from negative things.
  • 18. GO SEE A MOVIE!!! When was the last time you had fun? Even if it's just by yourself. You're allowed to treat yourself. Go, enjoy, be surrounded by people, even if they're strangers.
  • 19. If you like coffee, treat yourself for one at a local cafe. Who knows, you might meet your coffee soulmate in a cafe one day.
  • 20. STOP thinking Negative. Have a Pros/Cons List. Try not to outweight the Pros list with the Cons. Please?
  • You are good enough.
  • 21. Write down a bucket List, and start ticking them off. Having goals and dreams is healthy. If you have dreams, then you have a direction of where you're going.
  • 22. Get help. It's okay, if you're head is in a really bad place to reach out to people. It really is okay.
  • 23. Help others. If you're not sure what to do with yourself at all, be useful to other people less fortunate than you. Volunteer! Work with Charity, Feed the homeless, help the guide dogs association.
  • 24. Smile more. It looks good on you, believe me. Spend time with your guilty pleasures, my guilty pleasure is binge watching glee
  • 25. Please DO NOT go to a pub to drink to ease your mind, if you are going to do that, do it with a friend, or somebody close.
  • 26. Eat Chocolate. Okay yes while society says NO DON'T EAT THE FATTY FOOD. Hey; screw them. If you feel better eating a bit of junk go for it. There's nothing wrong with eating a whole pizza or tub of ben and jerry ice cream when feeling upset - just try not to make TOO much of a habit : p
  • 27. REBLOG YOUR FOLLOWERS POSTS, you might be surprised that you aren't the only one feeling the way you're feeling, you might be surprised by how much you're forgetting that hey - it's gonna be alright.
  • 28. Do something nice for your neighbour. Ah who knows, have you ever actually talked to them? Maybe they might be lonely too.
  • 29. Have a GAMES Night. A very good friend of mine loves Games. If You LOVE Games, then hell have a marathon of them. Play the sims, be in control.
  • 30. Speaking of marathons...dun dun dun - MOVIE MARATHON, I Don't Know About You Guys, But Having A Harry Potter Movie Marathon always cheers me Up. WITH FOOD Of course, and good company, but this is about cheering yourself up, so if you don't want company, that's okay.
  • 31. Draw. I love drawing too. I suppose I'm more of the creative person. There are a lot of different types of people out there, maybe you like solving things - do those fancy cube things Idk what they're called. If you are like my brother and you love Maths, then maybe you can tutor someone. On one hand you're helping someone, and doing something you like doing, just like I'm drawing because I like drawing.
  • 32.Be with kids. believe it or not, kids are the most innocent little munchkins, and they honestly don't care what you look like, if you play hide and seek with them they'll be thrilled, so long as you're nice to them, they're generally nice to you... but be warned, they tell it how it is too. I talk a bit different. The most popular thing they've said to me was "Is that why you talk funny, because of the things in your teeth?" (They've also never really seen braces before) I even had one kid determined to get me to sing 'Everything is awesome' I'll never forget that because this kid clearly didn't care how I sounded, and just wanted me to sing with her. I felt great.
  • 33. If you're into Fairy Tales, Please Please Read Chris Colfer's The Land Of Stories series 1-4. It's an amazing series, and you almost forget what world you're in once you start reading. Plus, there's more coming (I'm a little excited)
  • 34. Watch Pixar Movies. You can't go wrong.
  • 35. GO TO HOGWARTS. Harry Potter Fan? Visit - Platform 9 3/4s in London, or go to the Harry Potter World, or if you can't actually visit these sites, go on Pottermore.
  • 36. Read Fan Fiction, you might not be a harry potter fan, but whatever fandom you are in, believe me sometimes Fan Fictfion Cheer me up. I adore Glee *Don't Judge Me* and Dalton is the best thing ever. Or Little Numbers...or Both. They cheer me up big time.
  • 37. Role play. If you like superheroes or characters, go be with the crowd. I believe they have events like Comic Con, and on Facebook they even have Events for such things, go be with strangers! So long as it's safe of course.
  • 38. Write a letter to the person who inspires you most and send it. You might be surprised by an answer.
  • 39. Pick up your instrument. Don't ignore your musical talent if you do have a musical talent. Remember, you're worth it. I don't care what you've done. Pick, It Up.
  • 40. Maybe go visit your family? I know this is about 'quality me time' but if you haven't seen your family in such a long time or are at a distance. Maybe being surrounded by something familiar is what you need.
  • 41. Change Careers. If you're not enjoying what you're doing or studying, change it. I remember in highschool a teacher said you might change your job 10 - 12 times before getting it right. It'okay, you just haven't found where you're meant to be yet.
  • 42. Enter a competition - Who knows what will come from it, take risks.
  • 43. If you're a risk-taker, challenge yourself. IDK how you're going to do that, but google has some pretty good answers. Even ask your tumblr followers, they follow you for a reason after all.
  • 44. Go on a boat. Go Fishing! I don't know, it's not my thing, but if you like fishing, then hell - go out there and fish.
  • 45. Find time for yourself, are you working too much? Maybe you are working too much. You know life doesn't stop for nobody, and if you keep pushing yourself so hard, time will go so fast and you won't realise how much of that time you could have spent on your own self.
  • The world is not going to end if you treat yourself.
  • 46. You ARE Good Enough. Listen to my words. Sometimes encouragement is all we need, when people feel hopeless, or like everything's gone wrong. It's gonna be okay. I promise, just hang in there.
  • 47. Write Down Quotes that Inspire You. I have a wall of these, and of people that inspire me too, and it reminds me of the good things in life when I'm in a crappy mood.
  • 48. Find something to do. If you're not doing anything, go take up a course, research things that interest you, you might be surprised by what comes from it. Join a community that enjoys doing things you do.
  • 49. Go To The Beach - If you live in Australia like me, visiting the beach is actually really calming and me and my best friend always would go on a random drive, and drive up to a beach or a look out, and it was always calming. Enchanting too sometimes. Maybe we forget about the place we live in, and what's exciting about the place. If you're in New York, visit Broadway or The Statue Of Liberty, or if you're in London, go to the London Bridge, or the Eye, visit the Eiffel Tower if you're in Paris...just go Anywhere.
  • 50. Take a random journey. Go on a train to somewhere new, go on a road trip. You never know what's around the corner.

So excited fam!! I hope this blog flourishes 🌈! Can I get a scenario with kiyoshi, kagami, and midorima, where they're watching their female so run a marathon and right before the finish line her legs buckle and she can't really stand up by herself to finish the race. How would they react/ comfort her after the race was over? Thanks!

thank you! i hope so too ❁◕ ‿ ◕❁

Kiyoshi:

This was it, the moment you’ve been waiting for, the moment you worked so hard for, the moment you imagined all those amazing emotions coming all at once and making you feel like you’re on top of the world, or so you thought.

The finish line was right there, right in front of you, you could almost feel the victory, but that all crashed downhill when the pain shot in your leg making the only thing in front of you the floor

The race was over, and you weren’t the winner.

You were devastated, and what made it worse was that your boyfriend Kiyoshi, the one who supported you through it all, and cheered you on, was right there all along. Watching your every move with a smile upon his face, until he watched you fall

His smiled had disappeared then, and was replaced by worry.

Kiyoshi wanted nothing more than to make you feel happy, he knew how much this meant to you, and seeing you, the one he loved the most this upset broke his heart.

The two of you were on your way back home, walking silently. He couldn’t bare seeing you like this anymore so he had an idea.

He walked in front of you, his back facing you and knelt down. “Come on, hop on! Nothing a piggyback can’t fix!” he exclaimed.

You were too sad to protest, and honestly, you needed to rest. You put your arms around his neck, buried your face into his neck, and cried.

He decided to tell you how much he loves you, how much you make him proud, and how lucky he is to have you.

“I love you so much. I know this is hard, and I know how important this was to you, but I promise you’ll be alright soon. I know you did your best, you were amazing.” he whispered.

“Sometimes things go wrong, but that doesn’t mean its the end. Next time you will get them, you will win, and I will be there for you just like I always have been and always will be, no matter what.” he continued.

Hearing him say all those sweet words, the right words, and everything you needed to hear right now only made you cry more. You were happy to have him beside you.

Kiyoshi smiled upon feeling your scent, and breath close to him. He started walking again with you on his back. He knew you were crying and as much as it upset him seeing you like this, he knew that for now you just need a shoulder to cry on.

Although, that did not stop him from singing your favorite song on the top of his lungs 10 minutes later.

By then you were a laughing mess from his horrifying singing voice.

Kagami:

You were laughing as you ran your way towards victory, you couldn’t help but laugh. Hearing Kagami’s screams from the crowd all the way here made you so happy, you just started giggling.

“That’s my baby right there! You got this! I love you so much! You’re almost there!” Kagami screamed. He did not waste any chance to show you off to anyone who would hear him, and let them know you were his.

Kagami saw how close you were to the finish line, “GO GO GO GO GO” his cheers grew even louder, and not once did he lay his eyes off of you.

Not even when you fell

The entire crowd went quiet when you suddenly weren’t standing anymore. You were on the floor, unable to move, and your tears were threatening to come out any second.

Your leg hurt so much, and you couldn’t stand up. You lifted your face to see your boyfriend’s eyes still on you, but he was smiling.

“Why is he smiling?” you thought.

You were losing. What’s there to smile about you wondered, that was until his screams came back.

“BABY, YOU CAN DO IT! COME ON! YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE THE FIRST, YOU JUST NEED TO CROSS THE LINE. THAT’S ENOUGH TO MAKE YOU A WINNER, I PROMISE.” he yelled at the top of his lungs.

Now you really couldn’t help it, you were crying. You couldn’t believe you almost forgot your boyfriend was not the type to give up so easily

Kagami watched you.

The finish line wasn’t that far, you could make it if you skipped on one leg. You got up, and the pain rushing over your other leg made you regret this, but you were determined to try, and so, you started skipping.

Finally, you made it.

Kagami came running down, and made his way to you. He hugged you, carrying you while you cried into his chest.

“I lost.” you mumbled between cries.

“But you didn’t give up. Even with the pain, and even with only one leg, you managed to get up and continue your way, so just imagine how it will be next time when you’re using both your legs.” he held you tighter.

“I love you.” you whispered.

Midorima:

You couldn’t believe it, you lost

You were lying in your bed, replaying yesterday’s incident in your mind. The more you remembered the more it hurt. It shouldn’t have been that way. You should have won.

If it weren’t for your stupid leg buckle, you could have been number 1. You could have won. You were so sad that you didn’t even see your boyfriend after it. You just left.

You were too embarrassed to face him. He’s been helping you train for so long only for you to lose at the end. You really couldn’t bare to face him.

Your thoughts were interrupted when you heard someone knocking on your bedroom door. You didn’t answer, you just turned the other way.

Midorima wasn’t always the best at expressing his feelings, especially when he loves someone so much. He couldn’t do anything for you yesterday, you just left, and he didn’t try to stop you.

When he knocked on your bedroom door, and didn’t hear an answer, it broke his heart, but not as much as it did when he saw you curled up in bed, not looking at him, and crying.

“I’m sorry.” he spoke.

You were confused. “Why is he apologizing?” you thought.

You sat up quickly, the confusion surpassed your embarassment and sadness. “Huh?” you asked.

“I’m sorry I failed you as a boyfriend. I was supposed to be there for you, I should have stopped you before you left yesterday, but I didn’t. I knew you were upset, I just didn’t know what to do. You were so upset, and there was nothing I could do for you, but tell you I love you, and that’s not really much of a help.” he said.

Your lips formed into a smile before you even knew it. “You….. love me?” you faltered.

“Of course I do, nanodayo.” he said. His face was now beat red.

You were now officially, a sobbing mess.

“E…E-EH WHY ARE YOU C..C-CRYING? IM SO SORRY PLEASE DON’T CRY!” he was freaking out, and soon became a stuttering mess.

You ran towards him, and hugged him the hardest you’ve ever have. “I love you too.”

Midorima decided to stay the night at your place and hold you in his arms for as long as he can. Even if he’s not the best at expressing his feelings emotionally, he’s not the worst at expressing them physically.

idk what this is

okay i haven’t read any SJM books and i don’t want to or need to, my fantasy cravings tend to lean towards logistics-heavy military fantasy anyway. i also kind of don’t really want to get into the discourse surrounding the disabled dude who was healed, but i’ve seen some sentiment in that discourse (because i do follow it because snark blogs and also because i love drama) that i really, really want to talk about.

“you can’t expect a fantasy YA author to write only from their personal experience, or else all their stories would be about boring people.”

while yeah, this is true, this is absolutely true and i always encourage people to write from completely different perspectives……..stop using this to excuse an author writing about minorities and being completely insensitive about it.

to clarify with an example: jones is white and able-bodied and writes a book about a disabled slave in early fantasy american history. jones does no research. poc and disabled people are offended.

they absolutely deserve to be.

first thing, as advice for authors who do not belong to a specific minority: do not write books about that minority’s issues. i can do all the research in the world, but i cannot ever truly know what life is like as anything other than a white girl.

DO write books with minority characters. DO write books with minority characters as the protagonists. DO even include some instances of microaggressions or discrimination, as long as you do so with respect! but DO NOT think that you, as an outsider, know enough to write a book specifically about minority issues.

white authors already hold the bulk of the power and voice in the book industry - in any industry, really, that involves story-telling (in america; i have no working knowledge of any other country). when we write stories about mexican immigrants, first of all, we probably don’t know what the real experience is. second of all - we take the spotlight away from those people who do have those experiences.

the most well-known stories about a minority should be written by a member of that minority. i want stories set in polynesian cultures, but i’m hesitant to read a lot of them because so many of what i can find are written by flippin white people. i want to write, and am writing, stories set in fantasy cultures inspired by polynesian cultures! but before i publish these, you sure as heck can bet that i’m going to be asking actual polynesian people if i’m doing it right - or, well, if i’m not doing it so wrongly that people will want to throw me off a cliff. i don’t want to be a voice for polynesian cultures. i want to be waving a giant sign saying LOOK AT THESE AWESOME PEOPLE, LISTEN TO THEIR STORIES (and maybe read mine but don’t take it as gospel, read theirs more).

“you can’t please everyone -”

no. no you can’t. but that’s no frickin excuse to just be as offensive as possible, or to write whatever pops into your head and present it to the public without at least considering whether it could hurt marginalized people.

chaol in whatever series SJM wrote (spoilers) was disabled, and then magically cured. please, for the love of all that is holy, stop writing these plots.

(i am looking at you, too, brandon sanderson. i love you but come on. you were doing so well.)

when we, as a society, see stories of disabled people being cured, magically or with technology or with sheer force of will, or otherwise, it hurts not only disabled people, but society as a whole. here’s an amazing post by someone who this plot ending does hurt and offend, and it’s totally worth a read.

i kind of lost track of what i was getting at, but here’s the point.

you can be a good (or at least, a not-bad) person, and still hurt people by what you write. not taking the advantage of sensitivity readers, or research, or criticism, is just one more slap in the face of minorities. popular authors, whether they intend to be a ~public figure or not~, have the opportunity to influence a ton of readers. YA authors, especially, have an enormous responsibility to influence their audience for the better. SJM writing a magical cure story is sending the wrong message, whether she meant to or not. authors need to own their stories, and i don’t care if she’s a good person or a bad person or what. i genuinely don’t. i don’t care about her as a person, i care about her as an author who has a huge reader base and the chance to influence them, and she has not exercised this privilege to the extent that she could have.

she could have done better than write a magic cure plot. she should have done better. all she would have needed to do, literally, is ask disabled people to beta read and fix what they say needs to be fixed. when authors with influence ignore opportunities to make things better for subsets of people….i start to feel like they don’t deserve that opportunity.

love your blog :)) Head canon!!! lily finding out she's pregnant with harry and james reaction when she tells him

Y. E. S.

  • Lily going the muggle way with a pee on the stick pregnancy test and Marlene and Alice waiting nervously with her for the results.
  • They’re pacing the length of the bathroom until Marlene’s wand shoots some sparks signaling it’s time to look and Lily is shaking so bad with nerves because fuck can they really do this right now? There’s a war going on for Merlin’s sake. Does she really want to bring a baby into a world at war?
  • But she looks.
  • And she stares.
  • And then she cries.
  • And she laughs.
  • Because she can’t deny the happy tugging at her heart and the joy that spreads through her veins.
  • And once Marlene and Alice have gaged her reaction, checking for signs of sadness and finding none (for the moment) they’re jumping up and down with her, screaming for no particular reason and maybe they cry a little bit too because wow this is happening and it’s kind of scary and kind of amazing and maybe a little baby is just what everyone needs to keep themselves going and their spirits up
  • And so it’s wonderful.
  • Until Lily realizes what the next step is.
  • “I’ve got to tell James. Fuck, I’ve got to tell James.”
  • James who, she must admit, has grown so much in the past year, forced to grow up, but who still likes nothing more than a good joke.
  • James who she isn’t sure will want a baby… with her.
  • But she can’t not tell him.
  • So Marlene and Alice nag her for the next two days until finally when they’re alone one night at dinner, eating lazily on the couch, she gets up the courage.
  • “James.”
  • “Lily.” He raises an eyebrow.
  • Except now with his eyes on her she can’t seem to move her mouth.
  • His eyebrows furrow and he sets his plate down, fully facing her, “You’ve got quite the serious face there, love. What’s wrong?”
  • And still her mouth can’t move.
  • “C’mon Lils-”
  • “I’m pregnant.”
  • She didn’t mean to blurt it out like that. She meant to hint until he got it and then she imagined him picking her up and spinning her through the air.
  • James had frozen mid-sentence, eyes slowly widening.
  • “Come again?” His voice cracked slightly.
  • Lily’s heart started sinking, “I’m- I’m pregnant. I- yeah.” She stuttered.
  • She watched him silently mouth the word for a few seconds until something seemed to click in his mind.
  • Then he was sliding from his side of the couch, kneeling on the cushions  right in front of her. His eyes darted from hers to her stomach,
  • “You mean- there’s- there’s-” and he pressed a warm, large palm right to her belly making her pulse pick up.
  • She nodded, “Y-yeah. Yeah, exactly that.”
  • And then James was silent, lips slightly parted as he lifted her shirt (his shirt) just enough to reveal the smooth skin of her hips and stomach and repressed his palm to it, thumb rubbing back and forth softly.
  • He couldn’t talk - could barely breath to be honest - too overcome with a fierce sort of protection - of pride.
  • Meanwhile Lily felt as though she was going to burst because she simply could not tell what was going through his mind.
  • “Are you- I mean-” She sighs, “For Merlin’s sake, say something, James.”
  • But he still didn’t speak. He just looked at her and leaned forward, pressing a long, hard kiss to her lips.
  • And for the life of her, Lily could not recall a moment where James had been so tender, so soft.
  • And then she was being gathered into his arms, pressed against his chest and his lips kissing her forehead and her cheeks and laying back so she rested against him.
  • Still, not words had been spoken, but it was all the answer Lily needed and relief flooded her system.
  • After a few moments,
  • “I can’t wait to teach him Quidditch.”
  • “Excuse me, what makes you so sure-”
  • “I just know.” James shrugged.
  • You don’t get to “just know” these things, Potter, that’s my job.”

  • The next morning Lily was woken up by a crying, blubbering Sirius crushing her to his chest and a beaming Remus watching them.

Soft James is the best.

Hey there! It's me again. ^^' I love your blog and your writings are amazing! I just can't get enough of them. How about some angry/jeaslous Arno (or assassins, depends on whether you would rather like to write a a oneshot or short scenarios or whatever. ^^). I would love to see how he/they react(s) when his/their s/o gets cornered by a bunch of guys trying to hit on them or even trying more and/or being aggressive when they refuse. I'm really curious about that. :)

A/N: Sorry these were on the shorter side, I was going to do preferences but you said you wanted a scenario so I changed it around to that instead. But thank you for your compliment I hope you like it anyways!

Altaïr growled as he marched right up to the men that were currently crowding around his lover.

“Leave them alone.” He spoke coolly as he came to stop behind the men.

“We just wanted to talk to the little lady.” One man jeered at the assassin.

“She obviously doesn’t want to talk to you.” Altaïr warned as he slipped out his hidden blade in warning. The men paled before running off.

_

Ezio would walk right past the men and up to you, before putting a hand around your waist, and sending the men a friendly smile. But you could tell Ezio’s smile had a veiled threat behind it, and the other men could tell as well.

“S-sorry.” They’d quickly apologize before leaving.

“What would I do without you?” You chuckled as you leaned up and pecked Ezio’s cheek

_

“Hey now, don’t get difficult!” Connor’s ears perked up at the sound of a man obviously trying to force himself on someone and he went to investigate.

When he realized the person the men were harassing was you he would immediately rush to your side, forming a protective wall between you and your harassers.

“Let’s go.” Connor’s presence alone intimidated the men and they stood off to the side as you two left.

_

“Get away from her!” Edward would yell as he approached the men and stood by your side protectively. When he realized they men weren’t going to leave he took the small bag of coin he brought with them and tossed it to the men.

“Go buy yourself a wench or something, Jaysus.” Once the men scurried off with Edward’s money you decided to speak up beside him.

“You didn’t have to do that. Now you’ve lost your money.”

“It was worth it, I had you to protect after all.”

_

“Don’t touch me!” You yelped as you felt the men in the alley near you and you fight back the whimper that was bubbling up in your throat. Just as one of them was about to reach out to you a voice sounded you behind him.

“What have we got here?” You all turned and you were elated to see Arno standing there.

“Arno!”

“Now gentlemen, I’m sure you don’t want to trouble the young lady anymore.” He spoke casually, but the look in his eye spoke otherwise. Grumbling, the men left you alone.

_

Jacob cracked his knuckles as he approached the man that were towering over you, his lover.

“I suggest you leave lads.” Jacob chuckled as he slipped on the brass knuckles. When they didn’t leave and rushed at Jacob he quickly took them down with a few punches. Once he was done he approached you and tossed an arm around your shoulder to pull you close to him.

“My hero.” You teased as the two of you walked away.

_

The men suddenly went stiff as a knife flew by one of the men’s heads and embedded itself in the wall across from them.

“She obviously doesn’t want your company, leave.” Evie spoke from the entrance to the alley.

“Shit! It’s one of the Frye twins! We better get out of here!” Once they had run off Evie approached you and brushed the hair back from your face.

“Did the hurt you?”

“No, I’m glad you came when you did.” You smiled up at her

Can I request a smut angst fluff with Kyungsoo? (God I love his lips) can the girl be bisexual. Basically you just broke up with your gf and your all miserable. I've no words to say about your blog because it's awesome and I can't put it in words. :D

You know what you’re awesome anon for being so damn sweet *sobs*

Your head was buried in your pillow, taking in the tears you cried for a couple of days now. Your one year relationship with your girlfriend came to an end when she confessed that she wasn’t in love with you anymore. She was your best friend, the love of your life, and it all came to an end when she said those words to you. You reacted angrily of course, the next words out of her mouth said she was cheating on you with someone else.

You loved her with everything you had. All the times you spent together, all the ‘I love yous’, had it all been a lie? Or were you not good enough anymore? There wasn’t any use in winning her back, you just couldn’t make her happy. And she never loved you at all.

Your roommate Kyungsoo couldn’t stand seeing you like this. He knocked on your door and peeked his head in with his wide doe eyes.

“Hey, do you need anything?”

You kept your head buried in your pillow but answered him with your voice muffled, “My girlfriend back.”

He came into the room, climbing onto the bed and hovering over you as he stared down at the back of your head.

“___, I know you’re hurting, but you can’t be like this forever.”

“Oh yeah?” you challenged as you picked your head up and turned around to look at him. You could tell by how his eyes softened that he felt bad for you by how miserable you looked.

“I just got dumped by the person I loved for so long. Not to mention that she never felt the same and was cheating on me during the time.” you said, with a defeated look. Kyungsoo looked at you with saddened eyes before his lips twitched up in a smirk.

“I can make you feel better, if you want.”

Your eyes widened and he mimicked your look as he tried to explain himself.

“I’m not trying to take advantage of you! I just…hate seeing you like this. I know how bad your heart is hurting, and I want to take that pain away.”

Your eyes searched his own, wondering if he was actually serious. He smiled at you before leaning down to place a gentle kiss on your lips. He only pulled away an inch, waiting on your answer as he stared at you seriously.

“I can make you forget.” He said softly, his hand coming up to caress your cheek. “If you let me.”

You didn’t need any more convincing as you grabbed the back of his neck and pulled him forward to kiss you. If you were being honest, you were dying to kiss those heart-shaped lips of his. And just as you expected, they felt amazing against your own. If he could make you forget, then that better be a promise.

Your make out session was heated desperate, and full of emotions. Anger, desire, lust. He grinded his hips into yours, letting you feel the hardness in his pants, begging to be inside you.

When you both pulled away for air, you didn’t waste any time in getting both your clothes off. Once Kyungsoo saw your naked form, he went straight to work in cherishing every inch of your body with his lips, creating marks over your body as if he was claiming you as his own. All the way down to your aching center, his tongue taking the place of his lips as he licked your sweet essence.

Once he had you cum on his tongue, Kyungsoo climbed back up with dark, lustful eyes as he placed your legs on his shoulders. He slammed his length into you, making your back arch as you cried his name. He didn’t waste any time as he pounded his thick flesh into you, your hands clawing at his back as you moaned endlessly.

Kyungsoo didn’t go easy on you. He was determined to go by his words and make you forget with a hard fuck. And with every thrust of his hips he made you forget about your break up, and remember the moans of his name pouring out your mouth.

It was long before you both were tangled in the sheets together, calmness settling in and a smile finally on your face. It felt nice to be in Kyungsoo’s arms, gentle kisses with each other while you smiled like idiots.

I'm truly amazed that you've directed more anger at 1D's PR/Management team over this video than you have towards the white guy throwing out racial slurs. Look at my amazed face -_- I can't believe the white boy you love reading fanfic about gets less abuse for using an n word then his PR team get for responding to it. Look at my disbelieving face -_- I am shocked that you say Dan Wooten is a piece of shit for writing a headline but Louis isn't for using an n word. Look at my shocked face -_-

Oh goody, someone else is here to inform me of what I think and feel about this situation and to try to tell me how to run my blog. How fantastic, I sure didn’t get enough of this the other day, or anything.

You know what’s a very simple emotion to express? One-dimensional anger.

You know what’s not very time consuming to do? Reblog an existing post and add a few sentences worth of tags onto it.

You know what falls into this category? My irritation at Hackford Jones PR, Modest, The Sun and the ridiculous way they are responding (or rather, failing to respond) to the drug video appropriately and instead using divide and concur tactics and false band in-fighting narratives.

You know what’s a much more complicated emotion to express? Disappointment, frustration, confusion and anger, as applied to an individual who is an object of your respect, love and affection.

You know what’s extremely time consuming? Organising all of my thoughts and feelings about a situation into a detailed, brand new post, while simultaneously trying to stay in the loop about new and changing information.

You know what falls into this category? Yep, you guessed it. This incident does. In fact, every fucking thing that’s happened this week falls into that category, because at this point there is no catching up.

So if you’re here all furious because I haven’t made a post where I scream and shout ‘fuck Louis Tomlinson for being a racist fuck’ then you’re going to have to stay furious, friend, because I am never going to do that. It is way, way more complicated than that.

Am I upset with him? Absofreakinglutely. Do I want him to stop saying ‘Westside’, throwing gang signs, using racist slurs in jest and generally acting like he doesn’t remember that as a white boy, he’s not allowed to do any of this? Yes, a thousand times, yes.

You know how parents say “I’m not mad, I’m just disappointed”? Yeah, that. I’m disappointed in him because he should know better and because he should do better.

Unless it turns out that there actually was a guy in the car called Nick (and this is mostly wishful thinking) then yes, Louis said something racist and that is resoundingly not okay. No, I don’t think that Louis was being deliberately racist, I think he was saying something he thought was okay, and that’s the problem here. Instead of screaming abuse at him, I want to educate him because that is how you enable change and growth. A calm voice of reason goes a lot further than ‘fuck you you fucking fuck’ and if people would recognise this and try to channel their anger at Louis into a conversation instead of an accusation they would get a lot further.

I can be angry at Louis’ behaviour and still supportive of him as a human being, but more importantly, I can be angry at Louis and angry about other things at the same time. Being frustrated and Louis’ use of an incredibly problematic word does not preclude me from also blogging about other things and you have no right to pass judgement on me on for that.

I don’t know how familiar you are with my blog, but my working hours, time zones and general chatterboxness means that I have a tendency to discuss topics at length over a number of days. Especially given that I had twice specifically outlined that I am in the middle of writing a post about the use of this racist language (x/x), maybe you could cool your jets about telling me how I feel about this until I’ve had a chance to talk about everything in detail?

Since starting this blog, I have learned that I can’t make a short post with a only a fraction of my thoughts on a topic without being criticised for not having explained myself more clearly, or having someone wildly misinterpret my meanings. And now it seems that I can’t take a little bit of time to collect my thoughts before posting without also being criticised. I can’t actually win either way. Yay me.

I’m an incredibly time-poor person, so unless I suddenly find a way to clone myself, or someone starts paying me to run this blog so I don’t have to go to work anymore, you’re just going to have to deal with the fact that sometimes it takes me a little while to get to each and every topic.  And that is no indication of how important the topic is, or how strongly I feel about it.

If you have a problem with that, you have two options; shut up or go away. Your snide comments and bitchy implications are not welcome or necessary.

deathtotheselfie  asked:

I've been trying to write for years. Unfortunately I'm very young and the schooling I've received on writing is nothing like I what I write about. I'm only 14 now, but little phrases and ideas bounce around in my head. However when I write I feel like it's not good or mature enough because of my lack of experience. I can't tend to think of original plots as I'm just surrounded in other people's work. Do you have any advice on plot development? And do you think I should continue trying to write?

Hi! Your question makes me quite sad. If you like to write, then you should pursue it. It’s that simple.

School doesn’t help much in terms of creative writing. Over the summer, when I was little, my mom would make my sister and me write short stories. It kept me in the habit of writing even when school wasn’t in session.

(Wanna know a secret? I often got stuck halfway through my story, so I’d coerce my sister into showing me hers. Then I would write the same events but in my own words. I did this for quite a while one summer. Maybe two.)

Not only does school keep you ridiculously busy, but it also doesn’t like teaching creative stuff much either, because math and science are deemed as more important than anything related to the arts.

All those negative voices banging around in your head along with all the good ideas you have? You need to learn to silence them. Those things are what you are being trained to think.

Here’s what nobody seems to know about writing: you have to start  somewhere. No one starts off as an amazing writer.

People expect writers to have this magical well of intuition, but honestly, it just comes from practice.

You know that thing about practicing 10,000 hours in order to become a master at something? It applies to writing, too.

Writers write.

You need to watch and write things down–what you observe can be the basis for characters or plot or whatever. Eavesdrop on a stranger’s phone conversation to get a peek into other people’s lives. Sit on a bench in the mall and watch people go by.

Do you know how babies learn? They observe other people doing things and then try to mimic them.

I don’t mean that fledgling writers are babies, of course, but I mean that you can get your best work by reading other people’s work.

Figure out what you like to read, what you don’t like to read. And then ask yourself WHY.

What is it about that book you hated? Was it the characters? The plot? The slow story-telling?

What did you love about that one book? How did it make you feel? What parts made you feel that way?

I was in middle school when I began reading a Series of Unfortunate Events  (I’m 25, for comparison’s sake). Do you know what my writing sounded like while I was reading those? Lemony Snicket. It wasn’t on purpose, but that’s just what happened. (Also for comparison’s sake, I now have had a short story published in an actual anthology and completed a 60-page poetry collection as my creative thesis, as well as a book that I’m trying to get published.)

The more you read, the more you gain. If you read enough books, then you’ll have influences from all over that create a unique writer: you.

You are the sum of everything you have ever read or seen or thought about.

Yes, you’re a teenager. But that doesn’t stop you from observing the world and teaching yourself to understand other writers’ work.

If you want to write something but are worried that it sounds too much like somebody else, then figure out why it sounds that way. Is it just you that thinks it sounds that way? Or do other people tell you that as well? Find out what it is that makes it sound like that. Is it the narration? The plot? The themes?

Regardless of your answers, you are able to make it unique to you.

You are a writer, and whatever you write will be yours and yours alone.

As far as plot development goes, I find that outlining helps. I don’t always keep to the outline, but asking yourself “Then what happens?” after each event that you write down is the best thing you can do for yourself.

A plot is a series of events. If you know what happens naturally after something, then you write that down. It also helps if you understand WHY something happens.

She goes to the mall.

Then what happens?

She ends up going home and crying in her room.

Why? What caused this? What physical actions caused her to want to leave the mall? What mental actions occurred because of the physical actions?

She runs into someone she used to be best friends with, and they get into a fight. This makes her feel disappointed in her friend but also unsure of herself because she doesn’t know what she has done to make her friend act that way. She places the blame on herself instead of on her former friend. This is because she has been told growing up that everything is her fault and that her younger brother can’t do anything wrong.

See what I mean? And it’s okay to ask yourself what you would do in that situation. But your characters are not you. They probably won’t react like you would. And that’s okay and important.

As I told my students last year, ask yourself WHY and HOW after each sentence, after each paragraph, after each plot point, after each whatever. It will keep your story going until it reaches its natural conclusion.

Okay, this ended up being way, way longer than I intended it to be, haha. But I’m completely serious and obviously very passionate about this. And I can say way more on the subject at the drop of a hat, so if you have any more questions, then just give me a shout. :)

Best of luck. And don’t stop writing.

I mean it. :)

I looked at your game projects and I must say what I saw is amazing, can't wait to see them around. To the point, I am also looking to get into the art of game design (sadly my current school only offers Game Design as a minor, and there is absolutely no programming included or optionable) so I'm asking around trying to get a catalogue of trusted schools.... If it's not too personal may I ask you what school you went to and the major you participated in?

Hi there! For school I did this (major in 3D), followed by this. Having said that, it’s time for a bit of a rant! :D

I can’t help but to voice my opinion here, which is that you do not need to go to school to be a game developer. There is literally nothing stopping you from getting started right now, without dropping potentially crippling amounts of money on school.

For example: Unity is free and extremely powerful. There are lots of resources (also free) out there to learn it. Learn the basics. Once you learn the basics, participate in game jams, and be social. Get feedback on your creations. Don’t be afraid to fail, just continue creating things and learn what you can from each experience. Don’t try to make anything too big (NO MMOs!). Find out if there are game jams or local events you can go to in your city. Find out who made the games you like and talk to them on twitter (the actual people, not the games marketing account). Keep a blog and a website, post your work even if it feels like nobody is watching. Tell your friends about your work, get them to play all your games. There is tons of information out there like this, searching practically any basic gamedev question will likely bring up a plethora of forums, articles and Q&A posts. Here’s a great article by Zoe Quinn about making your first game.

School locks you into a routine. Some people are capable of thriving in that kind of environment, it helps keep them focused. They might have a lot of trouble getting motivated without strict deadlines and the scheduling of the school year. If that’s you, maybe it’s worth going to school. That’s kind of how it was for me. I often stayed at school from 9am to 9pm, rushing through assignments and then just working on my own projects into the evening, because being there motivated me. I was lucky enough to be in a class with people who inspired me (what would have happened if I didn’t get along with the group? Would it still have been worth the time, money and effort of going?). After going through that, I now have a better understanding of what motivates me and I find it a lot easier to do things on my own, which is great! School helped me improve as a person! Could I have gotten the same results by abandoning school, surrounding myself with inspiring friends and working on my own projects for 3 years instead? Maybe. It’s impossible to say for me now.

There are advantages and disadvantages to going to school, and I’m not saying you definitely should do anything, but it’s important to me that you (and all would-be gamedev students) at least realize that school is not the only way. Game development is a very weird, ever-changing thing, and there are tons of different ways to find fulfillment and success with it. Do lots of research. Figure out what you think is right for you, how you learn best, and then put your all into it.

Or, ignore everything I just said and keep doing exactly what you’re doing. The point is you have options. At least make sure you’re aware of them.

Disclaimer: These are just my thoughts on the matter. When people ask me about where I went to school it’s pretty much a reflex for me to talk about this. Take it with a grain of salt if you want, I’m just some guy on the internet after all, but please do your research before you make any major decisions!

Thanks for the question, jeweledeclipse. I apologize if you weren’t looking for this level of rant, but hopefully this post can be helpful to you and others in some way. I wish you luck no matter what you choose to do! :)

Also - regarding the actual courses I took, they involved nothing about game design or programming, focusing solely on graphic design and art (in my case 3D art). For game design and code, I am completely self-taught, and have no regrets about doing things that way.
