can we talk about this silhouette

maniacaltoaster  asked:

Do you think it's kinda weird that even though the characters in Villainous don't TECHNICALLY have good designs, while that kind of thing destroys other cartoons, in this one, it seems to work in its favor? Like, they look ridiculous, over the top, and crazy, but that feels like exactly what they're supposed to look like.

oh sweetheart let me tell you a little secret

the people who genuinely think the Villainous character designs are bad don’t know a damn thing about designing characters for animation

STRAP IN FOLKS IT’S TIME FOR ANOTHER RANT LESSON ABOUT ANIMATION CHARACTER DESIGN WITH NOVA (brought to you by SCAD: “I pay $35,000 a year to learn how to make cartoons so trust me I know what I’m talking about”)

The first thing any character design class (including the one I took) will teach you is “have a strong silhouette”

You can probably recognize almost if not every single one of these characters just from their outlines! So let’s take a look at the silhouettes of the Villainous cast…

HOLY SMOKES THEY ARE HELLA DISTINCTIVE!!! And here we even see what is probably the design reason for Dr. Flug’s paper bag and Demencia’s huge fluffy ponytail - they add to the strength of their silhouettes immensely.

Now let’s examine both the shape language of the characters AND how they’re likely divided in terms of their digital puppet rigs (as Villainous appears to use both the hand drawn and rigging techniques), because the former is the second thing any character design class will teach you and the latter is incredibly important to the modern digital 2D animation process. (Apologies if my rig estimates are off, I haven’t had as much experience with 2D rigging as I have with hand drawn.)

Black Hat has the most variety out of the cast, but broken up he’s really just a combination of rectangles, triangles and one or two circles. His hat is also kind of a shape in and of itself, one that comes very naturally when drawing his head. Like a lot of villain characters his sharpness is highly emphasized.

Dr. Flug is ALL about squares and skinny rectangles, with his only rounded shapes being his eyes and shoes. Normally when you see boxy characters they’re on the very masculine or muscular side, meant to seem strong or imposing, but Flug is a wimpy, scrawny twig. That’s really unorthodox and something I like a lot about his look.

What’s super interesting about Demencia is that next to 5.0.5, she has the most circles and rounded shapes. Sharpness is added in her details which makes her design look a lot more complex than it really is. What’s great about digital animation and 2D rigging is it makes characters who have a lot of specific details like her much simpler to animate, so she really isn’t impractical at all provided you’re animating her using a computer.

And finally we have Beariplier Markibear 5.0.5, who I’m sure surprises no one by being a big old round baby full of circles. His nose and snout are of course triangles though. I like how he’s the most intentionally simple out of the cast, even going so far as to have a different eye style that almost makes him look like something out of an ultra-cutesy anime. He doesn’t fit in with and stands out a lot from the others, which is entirely the point.

To sum up, the Villainous characters are both simple enough to animate on a budget/deadline and interesting looking enough to want to watch, the perfect combination for modern 2D digital TV animation. These designs were MADE for a 2017 Cartoon Network show in every sense, with just enough early 2000s influence to feel fresh and new as well as classic and nostalgic. I want these guys to represent and become iconic of CN the same way Finn, Jake, Mordecai and Rigby have.

How Feyre’s Character Development Is Shown In The Covers Throughout The Series

I love how simply the covers of the ACOTAR series shows Feyre’s character development throughout the series. It’s mind blowing to be honest.

You can see in ACOTAR how Feyre is standing straight. Although it could be said she’s standing upright for confidence during the last part of the novel, we know her stance could also show her complacence throughout the novel. Especially after reading the books and from the events that happens within ACOTAR. Her stance also looks stiff to an extent, showing how she is still submissive or under someone’s command. Furthermore, there is only half of her on the cover as if she’s trying to hide herself. The red in the background also indicate either her anger, loss, and/or death prior to reading the novel. The roses, obviously, fits with the title of Thorns and Roses but can also foreshadow Feyre and Tamlin’s relationship in the novel being like a rose: seemingly beautiful and sweet but, in honesty, is also harmful like the thorns of a rose. Her dress is also more conservative (?) (if you compare it to the other two in ACOMAF and ACOWAR) yet provocative (?). It covers most of her stomach and legs, showing how she was still insecure about herself and the only reasons she willingly used an outfit with a front that low is because she was either told to (although I have absolutely no judgement if she wore that willingly, she would work it just fine tbh haha). You could say her outfit is elegant (since it’s from Rhysand ofc) yet it gives off the vibe that she was made to wear it - something she is not use to given her awkward stance.

In a ACOMAF you could see how she is standing more fluidly on the side of the book. She is no longer stiff but looks more comfortable with her body. Her pose exerts confidence and strength, especially with her hand and the way it’s positioned above the wind as if she’s controlling it (which she probably is in some way if you think of Rhysand being the wind since he can fly etc., etc.). More of her is now shown on the cover as if she’s having the courage to step out of the book and show herself on the cover for what she is. Feyre’s hair blowing the way it is can show that she is in movement and could be fighting unlike her previous state in the Spring Court. Her outfit has also upgraded into more of an armour, showing that she is stronger now and fighting for herself compared to the beginning of ACOTAR when she was at the Spring Court. Furthermore, the armour could also indicate that she is working with someone else since we know from ACOTAR that the Spring Court does not have armours of the sort for females but only dresses (egh). The cover, once more, also fits with the title in accordance to the Mist and Fury part: misting is a skill Rhysand has (somewhat a foreshadow that Feyre’s mate might be Rhysand) and fury could indicate either Rhysand’s fury at the events that occurred Under the Mountain or Feyre’s fury at Tamlin showing his true self. Her tattoo on her left arm from Rhysand is also much more visible than her tattoo in the ACOTAR cover, as if she’s no longer trying to hide it like before but showing it off. The color blue is also known as reliable, calm, creative, intelligent, and maybe responsible (from a Google search I did). This foreshadows (EVEN MORE) about Feyre’s personality as we know she stopped painting for a given amount of time before starting again in the Night Court. The blue also indicates calm, intelligence, reliability and responsibility, all of the things Rhysand and Feyre are. Especially the reliability part foreshadows Feyre and Rhysand’s relationship as we know that she trusts him even though she denied it at first. The small city silhouette in the background can also show that she is in Velaris instead of the Spring Court where she only knows Tamlin’s home (palace?).

NOW IN ACOWAR. LET ME JUST TALK ABOUT THE OUTFIT FIRST. Previously Feyre was wearing armour, as if she was an accomplice of Rhysand’s Inner Circle, working with them to take out Tamlin and Hybern. NOW, NOW IT’S A FUCKING DRESS THAT SHOWS SHE’S A HIGH LADY BUT STILL STRONG AND FIGHTING FOR HERSELF. The design (by the lovely @charliebowater ) practically exudes confidence, strength, and her ability to see what is wrong and right (especially with the eyes on her belt but that could also foreshadow Jurian since his eyeball was Amarantha’s ring). The glistening of the bottom of her dress could also represent starlight, connecting back to the Night Court and Starfall possibly. The position of her arms and the way she’s now showing off both hands and the tattoo shamelessly indicates her confidence with being a part of the Night Court and Rhysand’s Inner Circle. The way her hands are resting on her hips further proves my point of her growing confidence as she stands as if she’s ready to face anything. Also, her full body is now on the cover unlike in ACOTAR when only half of her was showing. This can be seen as her way of finally discovering and accepting her strengths and, once more, exuding confidence. She’s also holding an Illyrian blade, far different than before when she was only showing her hands in the ACOMAF cover. This shows how her abilities have furthered and that she could fight now, with a blade (cause we know her speciality is actually a bow) and with her powers (which is explained in the next sentence). The mist around her could show how her strengths in misting may be improving in the novel compared to when she was still first training with Rhysand and, maybe, her fire powers also since we can interpret this as smoke too. We already know she can control her water powers very well. The color green, after a Google search, portrays balance, harmony, nature but also envy. The balance and harmony of the green could be a foreshadowing of the ending of ACOWAR and how, possibly (hopefully, dear lord hopefully), the ending might be peace amongst Prythian once more. The nature part of the green could indicate the Spring Court and her return. However, the envy part of green, what I really think, is referred to Tamlin and his envy. I feel like he will end up finding out about Feyre being mated with Rhysand and he will be even more envious (pray to the Mother that Tamlin doesn’t do anything stupid like he already did). HER HAIR, again it’s blowing showing that everything around her might be in motion and she’s ready to take them down like she promised. The background also has mountains if you look close enough. This may be a foreshadow that Feyre and the Inner Circle may have to return to Under the Mountain once more to fix Prythian (this is making me extremely nervous). Finally, the title. Lord, Mother, I love Cassian so much please don’t let him die. The cover fits with the title of A Court of Wings and Ruin once more although not entirely: the wings part may be a foreshadowing (I’m sorry I repeat this stylistic feature so much) to, sadly, Cassian’s wings (although I still refuse, to believe it). The “ruins” part may be referring to how everything is falling apart just like the ending of the last book but, this time, it might be the actual ruin of the Spring Court and Hybern. Maybe even Under the Mountain since there are mountain silhouettes in the background.

Well, that’s my interpretation of the covers. I felt the need to do this the moment the ACOWAR cover came out. I noticed her stance change and the way she brings herself. I couldn’t resist myself.

Who is Cas?

mini-fic I wrote in thinking about Supernatural 12x11.

“Who is Cas again?” Dean stared at the sticky note with a blank face, none of the names having any associations at all to his hexed brain. His brows knitted together in concentration, trying to remember. It was like water running through his fingertips.

Sam sighed, more frustrated than annoyed. He had just gotten off the phone with Castiel and was waiting for Rowena. He didn’t want her involved but Cass agreed she was their best bet.

“Cas is your best friend.” Sam said for what felt like the hundredth time today. Dean kept going back to that name.

“How did I meet him?” Dean said with no enthusiasm. He seemed almost bored as he took a sip from the water bottle that was opened on the desk.

Sam laughed a short, alarmed laugh as he ran his fingers through his hair. “Umm. At work…I guess you could say…”

Dean cocked his head to the side and his brow drew down as if he was skeptical. “We work together?”

“Yeah, for about eight years now,” Sam said, discomfort creeping into his voice.

“Tell me about that,” Dean said as he looked over at his brother with the beginnings of interest.

Sam squirmed in his seat but knew he didn’t need Dean to get to stop trusting him or he might bolt and he’d never find him quickly in his condition. “Well, Cas worked for another….company….that was trying to recruit you to work for them. He got you out of….a really bad situation… and he was supposed to help recruit you but he found out the…company…wasn’t a good company to work for. They lied, were bad to their employees, etc. He eventually stopped you from working for them and he left too, and you two have been kind of inseparable ever since. Sometimes the company executives try to get Cas to come back and work for them and it always ends badly, but he is a really, really loyal friend to you.”

Dean cocked his head to the side and his finger tapped next to the name on the paper. “There’s more to it than that…It’s like…right on the tip of my tongue.” Dean rolled his eyes in frustration and squeezed his eyes shut. “Blue,” he said assuredly. “His name makes me think of blue.”

Sam quirked an eyebrow. Dean could barely remember anyone’s name or his own….”Blue is the color of his eyes and he’s always wore a blue tie.”

Dean shook his head adamantly. “That’s not it. Not all of it. But yeah…really, really blue eyes right? There’s something about his tie too…or was?”

Sam’s eyes widened more. He wondered if this wasn’t his opportunity to find out more about those two and their feelings. “Right, Dean! He used to wear his tie flipped around.”

“That’s weird…he’s kind of a weird, dorky guy huh?” Sam’s head shot up as Dean smiled softly.

“Dean…how do you feel when you think about Cas?” Sam said softly, without any words leading him on. He leaned his left elbow on the table and hunched over in his chair with an air of casual conversation. He felt tense however. Something was going with those two and he was going to find out what. For once Dean took his request seriously. He closed his eyes and sat calmly. Sam assumed he was thinking. Hell, maybe he’d forgotten how to open his eyes.

“Safe,” Dean said softly and Sam leaned in to hear him better. “I feel safe when I think about him, like he protects me? Like I can trust him.”

Sam nodded softly. “You trust him with your life. He’s saved you a lot…Anything else?”

Dean sighed again and rubbed his temples. “Peaceful. I feel really peaceful. That doesn’t make any sense…”

Sam nodded to himself. He knew when Dean was with Castiel he was different. He didn’t want to discourage Dean’s memories. He was remembering, even if it was only fragments. This would at least keep them busy and maybe slow down the loss until Rowena got there. “No, it does. Cas is….He’s…he’s kinda like your “guardian angel”, you know, watching over you,” Sam said, trying to lighten the mood with a soft laugh but Dean’s eyes flew open and they slowly drug over to Sam.

“My Angel,” Dean growled out softly. He leaned over and whispered, despite them being utterly alone in the hotel room. “He’s my Angel…like a real one…and he likes me…like, likes me likes me.”

Sam’s eyes widened with discomfort and alarm. He sat up rigidly in his chair. “Um, well, Angel I can say…yeah he is. The other part, I mean, I don’t know…” He trailed off as he rubbed the back of his neck.

“No, he does. We’ve talked…me and my Angel…but we both said my brother wouldn’t like it…he’d think I was choosing my Angel over my brother,” Dean said this all with calm assuredness that made Sam’s stomach tighten. Apparently Dean had forgotten who he was talking to for a moment but then he drug his eyes up to meet Sam’s again. “You’re my brother…Sam. I’m sorry. I forgot for a second.  We can stop talking about….Cas…right? We can stop talking about him now.”

“Dean…I…” Sam stuttered out.

“I said we can stop talking about him now, Sammy,” Dean said with venom creeping into his tone. He sat the paper down on the table and abruptly walked off from the desk.

“You called me Sammy…” Sam said quietly after some time had passed. “That’s your nickname for me.” Dean stood staring out the hotel window, the sun making him a dark silhouette. “Dean, listen, you may not remember this later but I wouldn’t…you know…mind, you and Cas together. I know I said some things about you putting others in front of me, but I never meant…”

Slowly, Dean turned around and looked blank faced at Sam. “Who are you, again?” Sam squeezed his eyes shut in pained frustration and stood up, sat Dean back down at the table, and showed him the list again. “I’m your brother, Sam. Mary Winchester is your mother. Castiel is…your best friend.”

“You’ve heard of artists and athletes who are so cool and powerful they’re described as “lights out.” And you’ve heard of “unplugged” concerts. Well, the all-time coolest Elliott Smith show in Nashville, which took place the night of May 9, 2000, was LITERALLY “lights out” and LITERALLY “unplugged.”

Here’s what happened: Elliott was touring with an L.A.-based stoner band called Whiskey Biscuit. At 8 or 9 p.m. that night, Wiskey Biscuit opened the show, performing their entire set perfectly normally, although their lead singer looked like he was going to nod off at any moment.

Then, just moments before Elliott Smith was to hit the stage, a mini-disaster struck. The entire venue (the now-defunct 328 Performance Hall) went absolutely PITCH BLACK…as in, absolutely no lights whatsoever. Then, as hundreds of us stood in utter darkness, we suddenly saw a candle being lighted on stage….then another…then another. In the next moment, the short, thin, fragile-looking silhouette—then body—of Elliott Smith could be seen, and he was suddenly talking to us.

“Everyone,” he said, “please move as close to the stage as you can, and I’ll sing as loud as I can for you.” We were about to see an Elliott Smith concert as Elliott might have presented it in your living room—with only his guitar, and without any amplification whatsoever. And the crowd didn’t mind in the least. As a matter of fact, it was as if the crowd enjoyed it MORE, because most of us were standing so close to Elliott, and because he was performing with such a gentle, generous spirit.

He went on to present everything from older classics like “Waltz #2” to new (then) songs such as “Everything Means Nothing to Me” … which resulted in the concert’s most touching moment, as dozens of girls spontaneously broke out singing the tune’s beautiful, ascending chorus.

The lights never came back on…and Elliott Smith never played Nashville again. (He died just three years later, at the age of 34.) It was, for me and many others I’m sure, far and away the most memorable and poignant concert we’ve ever witnessed.

May you rest in peace, Elliott.”

Cute Scenario one-shot | Hope you enjoy :) - Mod M 💕

It had been a hectic week for Ryosuke, the guy had literally traveled across the world for his upcoming movie Fullmetal Alchemist. From Japan, he flew to Los Angeles and shortly Paris, and back to Tokyo. Ryosuke couldn’t complain, it’s was indeed a one in a lifetime experience promoting his film across the world and meeting his foreign fan base, but he was glad it was over and back home.

Yoongi’s loud voice awoke me rudely for the second day in the row, meaning he had recovered nicely.

Jimin avoided my gaze as we entered the house. Tae’s eyes flicked between us as we sat on opposite sides of the table, Jungkook greeted me with a smile. The pain from the day before had subsided slightly, but it was still sore.

I winced as I took my seat at the table, this didn’t escape Jin’s attention.

“Y/N, no hard labor today,” Jin said, folding his arms over his chest. His probing coffee coloured eyes stare worriedly into mine.

“What? No! I should help! I can’t just sit around,” I protested, staring dejectedly at the older man.

“I never said you should sit around, but no climbing in trees, or running around,” he said pointdly.

“What am I supposed to do then?” I scoff, looking back him accusingly. “I can’t sit around and do nothing all day?”

“You can help Tae with preserving food, and shelling nuts,” Namjoon said. With a huff, I speared a skinny sausage, tearing off a piece.

“Come on, it won’t be so bad. We can stay in the shade all day,” Tae said catching my eye and winking. My lips twitch into a smile.

After finishing breakfast, I helped Jungkook wash and put away the plates before Yoongi dragged him away. I was left alone to finish drying the last lot of plates, humming some random tune before joining Tae out in the back yard.

But before I even get the chance, my path is blocked by Jimin standing in the doorway. Leaning against the door frame, the morning sun made his silhouette glow. Coupled with the disarray of messy blond hair and soft pale skin, he looked angelic. My heart fluttered, but I suppressed it with a swallow.

“Aren’t you supposed to be out with Hoseok?” I asked, trying to keep the quiver of nerves at bay. He had that effect on you.

“I wanted to talk with you first,” Jimin said, his brown eyes scanning my face.

“About?” I said, willing myself to stay cold. But it wasn’t working, the glow of the sun behind him began melting my resolve like ice in the hot sun.

“Yesterday,” he said, his brows furrowing slightly as if I should know what he’s talking about. I do. I don’t want to talk about it.

“What about yesterday?” I shot back, he bit his nail.

“You know what I mean, Y/N. What was that explosion?” Jimin asked.

“I was stressed is all,” I muttered, breaking his gaze.

“Really? It wasn’t anything else?”

Before I could answer, Hoseok began to holler for Jimin. He turned, pausing and opening his mouth like he wanted to say something, but on second thought simply turned calling that he was coming. I stood in the kitchen watching the doorway fill once more the blinding morning sunlight. Taking a breath I went outside to join Tae.

He was sitting underneath a tree, two plastic baskets on either side of him. He had a knife out, it caught the light of the sun, turning from silver in orange then back to silver. I sat beside him, staring down at the baskets. It was filled with olives, I grimaced remembering yesterday.

“I’m so sick of olives,” I muttered, Tae laughed.

“You just have to gut them, and put the flesh in there,” he pointed with the tip of his knife at the second basket.

I nodded, picking up an olive, splitting it open and tossing the flesh into the basket. After about 3 dozen olives my fingers were sticky with the olive juice. My fingertips were sticking together, cursing I tried wiping my hands on my pants. This only made it worse, now my fingers were sticky, covered in a mix of jean fuzz, dirt, and dried blood. Tae laughed, I scowled at him, and tried to touch his face with my finger. He dodged it, but almost fell out of his chair. I grinned as my finger made contact with his cheek.

“Gotchu,” I said, my face very close to his. Tae’s eyes glinted with something, my finger staying there.

“Y/N,” he said, suddenly serious.

“Yes?”

“Do you like Jimin?”

At this I pulled away, sitting back down in my chair, trying once again to wipe my hands on my jeans.

“We are just friends,” I answered.

“Really? Cause it seems like you’re-”

“We are just friends, Tae!” I snapped. Tae’s mouth fell open. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to snap.”

“It’s fine,” he said quietly, going back to the olives.

“I’m going to wash my hands,” I said getting up. Despite the blazing sun, I felt cold as I went around to the back of the house. There was a basin in the shade filled with slightly dirty water, a leaf spinning aimlessly around in it. I washed the dried juice off my hands. Shaking my hands dry, I made my way back to Tae. I stopped when I heard arguing voices. I recognized them as Tae and Yoongi.

“You need to stop bring people here, Tae,” Yoongi was saying.

“Hoseok was my friend! I couldn’t leave him,” Tae protested.

“Yes, you could have. It wouldn’t have been the first time! Saving them was just an act of your guilty consciences!” Yoongi snapped.

“You have no right to talk about that, no right,” Tae hissed.

“You left her for dead. You left her for the infected,” Yoongi said. “We all thought you loved her. Don’t repeat the same mistake twice. Admit Tae, Y/N is a replacement for her.”

“That’s not true,” Tae’s voice shook.

My blood ran cold, who were these people really? Why did being called a replacement make my heart contract? Why did that comment hurt? And more importantly, who was Yoongi talking about?

“Whatever. I’m not going to pick up the pieces this time Tae. This time, you’re on your own,” Yoongi said before walking away. I waited a moment trying to process what I just heard.

I stepped out from behind the house, trying to smile.

“Hey Tae,” I said.

“Hi,” he answered, not looking up from the basket.

“How many more of these do we have to do?” I asked, taking my seat next to him.

“I don’t know,” he shrugged.

“Is something wrong?” I asked, already knowing the answer.

“No, I’m fine,” Tae said, giving me a square smile, I smiled back. We spent the rest of the afternoon in silence, only breaking it to find jars to stuff the olives into.

“I’m hungry,” I moaned, leaning back as the sun dipped behind the hills.

“Y/N you ate like a third of the olives,” Tae snorted.

“You helped,” I said, nudging him, he laughed. The main gate creaked open and we looked up. Hoseok and Jimin walked in, burlap sacks slung over their shoulder, sweaty and tired. Hoseok smiled and walked over, Jimin avoid my eyes.

“Hello! Ooo, olives,” Hoseok said plucking one from my hand, I slapped his hand.

“No, you can eat them later,” I said with a smile.

“But I’m hungry…” he pouted.

“So am I,” I laughed.

“Let’s go in, dinner should be ready soon,” Tae said looking at the sun. I finished closing the jar and stood up, following the rest inside. I was grateful to be out of the heat and sun. I touched my cheek and winced, I had gotten sunburned.

“Here,” Tae said handing me a bowl filled with nuts. I took it and emptied it almost at once.

“Thanks. I think I got sunburned,” I laughed, placing the bowl down.

“Really? I thought you were just happy to be with me,” he winked. At this I blushed pinker, but then remembered what Yoongi had said.

“Y/N is a replacement for her.”

“Shut up, Tae,” I mumbled, shoving him lightly with my shoulder.

“Water?”

I looked up, Jimin’s hand was outstretched offering me the glass. I gave him a stiff smile and took the glass.

“Can we talk outside?” Jimin asked, biting his nail. I nodded, and followed him outside.

He paused by the tree Tae and I had been sitting under, his hand touching the bark gently. I watched him, my heart clenching as the afternoon sun lit up his silhouette looking like the cover of the old romance novels housewifes used to read back before the Outbreak.

“Y/N about last night…”

“Yes?”

“What made you act like that?”

“I told you, stress,” I answered, rubbing my arm.

“Y/N, that’s bull and you know it,” Jimin said, spinning around to face me. His brow was furrowed, one of his hands still curled into a fist. “Just tell me, please.”

“I can’t,” I muttered looking down at my scuffed up boot.

“Why not?”

“Guys food is-” Jungkook stopped short as he stepped outside. “Sorry, was I interrupting something?”

“No,” Jimin said still looking at me. “It’s fine, we’ll be in in just a sec.”

The younger boy nodded and retreated back into the house.

“You can trust me, Y/N,” Jimin said before going back inside.

Thoughts on "Style"

I get a lot of random notes about “style” and how “cool” my “style” is.

When I was younger, I took offense to the whole “style” comment. Not because the statements weren’t well intentioned, they were and still are, but because of a fundamental ignorance as to what “style” actually is.

As I’ve grown older, I’ve come to understand that in my youth I was insecure about my own lack of substance, as well as under-appreciative of the kind intentions of others.

I still don’t believe in “style” this or “style” that. I believe, instead, in certain techniques and consistent tendancies we start off mimicking, and then developing on our own as we grow confidence and competence in producing for ourselves.

I feel hesitant to talk about “this style” or “that style”, because it implies vacuous decorative nonsense. This superficial costume versus that one. Even costumes can have much more depth describing much more about personality than just haphazard broad generality.

When we instead talk about techniques and specific consistent details, that is where we learn about the essence of what it is we try to depict.

Maybe a detail is a lack of detail, or the balance of positive and negative space. Maybe a technique is to approach picture making from broad shapes to determine gesture and emotion. Maybe we are more precise with our silhouette in certain ways as to leave out the need for line, but rather we carefully compose guides toward implied lines.

Either way, technique comes from a rigorous pursuit of the “fundamentals” of what it is we do. Technique in “art” comes from understanding basics of drawing, color, shape, composition of forms.

Over time we let muscle memory take over and spontaneity flow and bend or break our own tendencies. Over time we further develop our ideas and further refine our voice.

i was tagged by @louisysl to pick my fave lyrics from HS1. hold on folks, its a wild ride

Meet Me In The Hallway
once you go without it
nothing else will do

Sign Of The Times
we can meet again somewhere
somewhere far away from here

Carolina
how would i tell her that she’s all i think about?

Two Ghosts
i’m just trying to remember how it feels to have a heart beat

Sweet Creature
when i run out of road
you bring me home

Only Angel
i’m just happy getting you stuck in between my teeth
and there’s nothing i can do about it

Kiwi
she sits beside me like a silhouette

Ever Since New York
i’ve been praying, i never did before
understand i’m talking to the walls

Woman
i hope you can see the shape i’ve been in
while he touches your skin

From The Dining Table
why won’t you ever be the first one to break?

this has been fun and challenging but yay its done lmao im not tagging anyone but do it if you want to :)

I sew and I found this picture thats so perfect to talk a little bit about seams. Seam allowances in this case support and create a silhouette. In some garments we often try to create patterns that remove bulk from the garment that we are trying to create.  With less seams and less seam allowances there is also less structure. But there are also times where the positioning of seams, and their seam allowance values, can be used to reinforce the shapes and silhouettes that we want to create. Like this, which is amazing and beautiful.

Utah’s National Parks

Island in the Sky: Canyonlands

My first glimpse of this epic canyon was from the visitors center with a parking lot full of foreign tourists. Across the street was the edge of the Canyonlands, a barren wasteland full of millions of years of erosion and insane rock formations. When I walked to the edge of the cliff and looked down I saw this rinky-dink road that winded all the way down the canyons and trailed off into the distance. I wanted to lean over the edge and take a picture of the bottom of the canyons, but my extreme fear of heights kept me 3 feet from the edge at all time. A wonderful South Dakotan couple told me they would hold my hand if I wanted to lean over and take my picture. I grabbed the husband’s hand and scooched over the edge, snapping my picture. I put my life in another person’s hands, quite literally, and thank God they didn’t drop me. But I knew they weren’t going to drop me (on purpose at least) because South Dakotans are the nicest people. Life Fact: you can always trust a South Dakotan.

The sketchy road I mentioned above was our destination: the 3-day camping trip’s itinerary was a 100 mile loop called the White Rim Trail. Our adventure started with seat-clenching switchbacks, 20 minutes of pure agony and that “Jesus, take the wheel” feeling.  Once on the lower level of the canyon, I was fully surrounded by a prehistoric landscape. What wasn’t a dirt road was cryptobiotic crust, cacti, or canyons. No matter how far down we traveled, the road seemed to descend even further. Scott and I are serious campers, but nothing could prepare us for this.

The strange thing about Utah is that you can go from gorgeous Swiss-looking mountains to the surface of Mars within 2 hours of driving. For the majority of our stay, we were with Scott’s parents in a beautiful little valley, but for these three days our eyes feasted on unbelievable views only seen in one specific part of the world. It was like a scene out of Mad Max: Fury Road, clay dust kicked up from underneath the tires like a ball of fire and every inch of our bodies were stained red from the sun or dirt. During the entire trip I only saw about 5 species of animals. I was lucky enough to spot a Desert Bighorn Sheep on my first day - there is a population of 600 sheep in a 100 million acre radius.

Scott and I pitched camp in a dried up flash-flood pool. There was sand at the bottom and it made the perfect nook for our tent. After an exciting day of vastly views and basking in the sun, we put our chairs at the edge of the canyon to watch the sunset. The amber glow of the sky highlighted every ridge of the canyons for miles on end. It was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. Next thing I knew, Scott had got up from his chair and leaned in close to me on one knee. “Will you marry me?” We both jumped up and hugged, with tears in our eyes, kissing each other and telling each other how much we loved each other. My answer was “yes, absolutely.” I will never forget that day, that view, that moment, or that song - At Last by Etta James, that played gently in the background. Just thinking about it now makes me teary-eyed. I love Scott so much and his six months of planning definitely showed.

Capitol Reef National Park

Now I know nothing else I say can top that proposal story, but I want to talk about the other parks we visited. I love ancient history, so seeing the petroglyphs in Capitol Reef was the highlight of this visit.  The rock art figures were created by ancient Native Americans around 600 AD. I may sound crazy when I say this, but my first reaction to the petroglyphs was the confirmation of the existence of aliens. There are some serious robot/demon  silhouettes going on on that rock face. Just think about it - if you were a primitive being and saw an extraterrestrial, wouldn’t you chip it’s profile into a rock? Makes sense to me. Life Fact: aliens exist.

Before Capitol Reef was recognized as a National Park, it originally served as a uranium mine. There are dozens of small cave-like entrances that are boarded off with radiation signs. How amazing would it be to be able to go inside and explore one? I wonder what types of creepy things are left over inside the uranium mines.

After a day of driving around Capitol Reef and three very long days of not showering (I know, Scott proposed to a stinky, hairy girl - he really loves me!) we got a hotel right outside of the park. The ranch-style abode had about 25 beautiful horses grazing around with a beautiful backdrop of the canyons. The speckled pony was beautiful! If only we had more time, I would have loved to go on a horseback ride around the canyons.

Arches National Park

Our last destination was Arches. The beautiful landscape is filled with giant rock formations that were carved out by oceans many years ago. Still standing today are gargantuan arches. Can you imagine when it snows in Utah, all of these canyons and arches are covered in snow? At night, the stars fill up the sky and the entire constellation is visible, the smoky outline of the arches in the distance. I made Scott take some pictures of me standing underneath one of the arches and I looked like a tiny ant. It is amazing how these structures have stood the test of time. Unfortunately due to weather and wind erosion these arches may not stand tall for much longer, but I assume that won’t be for another thousands of years.

My trip to Utah was absolutely unforgettable. Words can’t describe the amount of beauty, nature and breathtaking landscapes I saw. The White Rim Trail was truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I am so happy Scott made it even more memorable. During a special anniversary date, we definitely need to make a trip back to that spot! Maybe we should drag our friends and family out there and renew our vows :) Thank you everyone for the engagement wishes and thank you for dealing with this excessively long post!

As always,

Taylor

see the thing is
i know you still hold her in your heart
even if you’ve turned off the lights
in the corners where she’s crying your name

see the thing is
these sheets still smell of her perfume even though
you’ve washed them with my body. it turns out
my skin, my sweat, my heat
were not steel wool and could not scrub her
from where your mattress remembers her silhouette
maybe because you draw her picture
in your sleep it’s kind of funny
because i can hear your dreams
talking about her

see the thing is
in class one day when the teacher was absent
we all took a personality test and she was told
she was a hurricane, strong winds, warm rain
the kind of girl who comes in and sweeps everything
into a mess but everyone thinks she’s
powerful and beautiful and calm at the center
whereas i was told i was a blizzard
nothing special just a coldness that leaves this world
a little more filled with ice

see the thing is i just never learned how to move my hips
in that swaying dip hers have and i never learned
real control so i will be halfway through a cake
while she says “no thanks, i’m full” and my grades
aren’t perfect like hers and basically i’m sick
of finding her taste still stinging your lips
because you pretend that you love me but
we both know
i’m just the placeholder for the girl that
still walks across your mind

because good god do i love you but
i’m just here to fill up the space
that she left behind.

noddytheornithopod  asked:

"Too bad you won’t get a good look at that fountain that looks for all the world like four-armed Blue Diamond, because the fountain’s broken and for good measure let’s just have Steven fail to repair the Spire specifically in a way that makes the lagoon collapse and the top of the Spire sink." I recognised the four armed statue, but not the second fountain one. Do you have an image of what you described here at all? Really want to look at this given bomb spoilers.

Sure deal!

We see the fountain for the first time in Cheeseburger Backpack when Pearl talks about the Sea Spire. She specifically makes an accompanying hologram:

This is the fountain I’ve been talking about. You can see it’s surrounded by members of Blue Diamond’s court. The two on the left are in The Answer as they’re both in one silhouette that has them turning to gasp dramatically at something happening. The one on the right with the high collar and the bunny-ear-shaped hairdo can also be seen in The Answer.

And I personally think it matches up uncannily with Blue Diamond. It’s hooded, has long, draping clothes, and is marked with a blue diamond, placed right where Blue’s gem is.

Now, we don’t see that fountain itself, but we do see the broken-off pedestal for where it used to be. It’s the big room where they find a bunch of Crystal Shrimp and Steven throws bagel sandwiches around.

Look at the floor pattern radiating out from that broken basin. Look at the archways, the stairs.

Overwhelmingly, the area has held up surprisingly well but the fountain is utterly destroyed- there aren’t even hunks of it lying around.

“One trademark in the show that’s terrific and that Vince and I talk about and exploit is that we often don’t see the faces of the main characters. Vince says that everyone knows who these people are so we really don’t need to see their faces. Other networks or studios would be upset if you put your main character in a silhouette or put a little bit of light on his head; they want you to see him. We always head towards the emotion of the scene and not necessarily towards seeing the faces. If I can tell the story in a pitch-black room with the face totally in silhouette, that’s what we do. It’s expressionistic. We represent reality, we don’t reproduce it."

Michael Slovis, Director of Photography - Breaking Bad

If this isn’t 100% exactly the way Kurogane would react then I don’t know what is. Just, “CUTE THINGS? HELL NO I’M OUT OF HERE GOODBYE.”

I also love how Clamp can go from tiny cute running figures to HYPER REALISM LIGHTING SILHOUETTES from one frame to the next. And then we have this.

This chapter is a gift, and it’s only just started.

MEANWHILE.

Did… did Syaoran jump into the water?

Is that the plan he went with?

Giant lake suddenly exploded with magical light and his plan was jump into it?

Syaoran, we need to have a serious talk about these plans of yours and how many of them involve you jumping into potentially deadly scenarios with only a moment’s notice.
