My dear lgbt+ kids
“That’s a stereotype” does not mean “That applies to nobody at all” and it certainly does not mean “If it applies to you, you are a problem and you need to change or else you’re not welcome in our community”.
Let’s take “Trans girls always over-do it, they wear way too much make-up” as an example. That’s clearly a stereotype and not true - Some trans girls wear no make-up at all, some wear it occasionally, some wear it every day and their styles or color choices range everywhere from subtle to bold and bright.
The problem with this stereotype is that the person saying it has a very clear picture in mind of how all trans girls are, not seeing them as unique individuals and likely not treating them as such, either.
The problem are not trans girls who do love make-up, wear it every day or wear very bold and bright styles/colors - they’re just being their unique self which is their human right.
We can not fight this stereotype by shaming them. Saying “No real trans girl wears tons of make-up” does not help anyone - it simply pushes a different picture of how all trans girls are or have to be.
If a stereotype - or even lots of them! - apply to you, don’t feel guilty and don’t listen to anyone who tries to tell you you’re fake or “problematic”.
Being yourself is nothing you need to apologize for.
With all my love,
