can i get a medal or something

No, seriously.

It was something that I noticed when I first watched Phichit’s FS Program (Terra Incognita). But it was only clearly obvious when I watched JJ’s program (boy do i hate that dude but he can skate) and I knew it was better than Yuri’s. In the same way, I knew Yuri’s was better than Yurio’s before the scores were announced.

The thing with sports is that it would have been incredibly easy to just get these skaters to do more and more impossible jumps to showcase why they are getting better and better. It can be like Prince of Tennis until these skaters aren’t even doing actual humane moves.

But figure skating isn’t like most sports. Figure skating’s major component comes from presentation and boy does this series knows that!

The thing is Yuri on Ice is very good at subtly using better editing, dialogues within a person’s mindset, and better animation quality to showcase how a program is going.

It’s how the show subtly telling us Phichit is winning over Chris’s more technically impressive performance. It’s how the show subtly slowly improves Yuri’s Eros performance tidbit by tidbit – it wasn’t just fanservice.

And that’s amazing, because behind the series is clearly a group of animators that know how to really show instead of tell. It is probably why this show has been such a treat in all angles – it is because these people really think about how every single subtle details can play into the perception of a scene.

After the first gold medal, he feels pride. The second he’s defending a title, the third he’s proving a point. The fourth gold medal he starts to feel bored, and after the fifth, just a curious emptiness he doesn’t know how to analyze.

“You’re bored,” Christophe says, and if there’s an edge there it’s only barely perceptible. If there is bitterness, Christophe is too good a friend to let it show.

“I’m not sure that’s it,” Viktor says.

“Let me ask you something, Viktor, why do you keep skating? Don’t get me wrong—you have to keep skating until I can beat you, I just want to know what your reason is.”

There’s something sort of gloomy about that statement—does he have to keep skating? Until someone beats him? Is that even what he wants? Is that something everyone else wants?

“See, you can’t even answer, can you? Just think about—everyone on this ice has one thing in common: you. We’re here to beat you. But you don’t have a Viktor so you’re bored.”

Everyone has me but me, Viktor repeats in his mind.

“What you need is a really good fuck.”

“It always comes down to that with you,” Viktor says genially.

“Because it’s true! It cures everything. Just anonymous fucking; you and someone else and you’re both just bodies and pleasure and it’s the best thing in the world. It’s eros—the highest form of pleasure anyone can obtain. It’ll help you get over your funk, trust me. Find a random person and screw their brains out.”

Christophe says this like Viktor doesn’t know that Christophe has been in a very committed relationship for the past year. Like Viktor doesn’t know that Christophe is very much in love, and that he found his inspiration not with anonymous fucking, but with a love that doesn’t leave.

Maybe that’s what I need, Viktor thinks idly. A love that doesn’t leave.

He dismisses the idea almost immediately. Whatever this emptiness is, it’s not something that romance can fill.

“Do you think I should keep skating?”

He’s not even sure this is a question he wants an answer to, but it’s a question he feels like he needs to ask, and he has to ask it to the person who has known him the longest.

“Of course you have to keep skating!” Yakov shouts, predictably angry. “What else are you going to do? Retire? Travel? Write your memoirs? Don’t be an idiot. You’re still the best, so you keep skating. What else is there?”

Right, Viktor thinks.

What else is there?

“‘Do you want my autograph?’ God, you’re such a fucking idiot. Get over yourself, asshole, not everything is about you.”

Yuri has been on a tirade for quite some time, and Viktor doesn’t understand why. Nor does he particularly care—Yuri is usually on a tirade about one thing or another and Viktor has long since concluded it’s just better to smile and nod along when he gets like this.

“Really, Viktor, that was poorly done,” Mila says. And if even Mila agrees than surely he must have done something wrong, but it’s too late to figure out what now. “Although, Yuratchka, I’m not sure why you care—weren’t you the one saying, ‘There only needs to be one Yuri?’”

“It is good that Yuri has a rival,” Georgi says off-hand, “Besides you, that is. A more attainable goal, since he’s just starting out.”

A rival, Viktor thinks. It always comes back to that. Is that what I need? Not a Viktor, but an attainable goal.

But everyone on the ice was a friend and a rival, so he’s not even sure what that means.

It’s only at the reception that Viktor realizes what it is that the others had been yelling at him for. He sees the dejected Japanese man and it clicks, Oh, he’s another skater. No wonder Yuri yelled at him—it was very poor form to offer his autograph to another skater.

Guilt is not something he likes to dwell on—he doesn’t like it, he’s never been particularly good at it, and really all things considered life is just much easier if he’s not too hung up on what other people feel because of him.

But he does feel bad.

He keeps watching the sad man and thinks to himself, How could I have known? He remembers Yuuri Katsuki now, (Yuuri had, all things considered, been a very memorable skater—it’s no wonder he caught Yuri’s eye) and the glasses make him look like a whole different person.

He’ll have to apologize later.

The not-guilt makes him aware of the other man in a way that maybe he wouldn’t be otherwise. It’s strange—but maybe he’s envious of the other man’s devastation. Maybe that’s what I need—something that will make me cry. He can’t remember the last time he cried. He can’t even remember the last time he had anything he cared enough to cry about.

“Shouldn’t someone make him stop?” Michele says, sounding nervous. “That’s like his fifteenth glass, and I’m not even exaggerating.”

“Pft, Italians,” Mila scoffs. Michele is far too easy to tease, so she purposefully thickens her accent and says, “That’s nothing. We feed that to babies, in Russia. You Italians just don’t know how to hold your liquor.”

“I can hold my liquor just fine!” Michele shouts. (“He really can’t,” his sister whispers at the side), “I’m just saying, if he keeps drinking like that he’s going to die.”

Mila has a point—Russians know how to drink. It’s a point of national pride, really. And maybe that’s why every single Russian in the room is watching Yuuri Katsuki with a sort of hushed respect. It’s not just that he’s on his fifteenth, moving onto his sixteenth, glass of champagne, it’s that it doesn’t look like the liquor is slowing him down any and you don’t have to be Russian to know just how impressive that is.

Maybe that’s what I need, Viktor thinks. Drink until I lose all control.

Or maybe I just need to lose control.

“Viktor! After the season is over, my family owns a hotspring, so please come. Be my coach! If I win this dance-off, you’ll be my coach, right?”

Oh, Viktor thinks.

Maybe all I need is you.

A/N: Thanks, anon-friends! I haven’t fully decided if I want to write a long story for Yuri on Ice yet, (largely because I’m not sure I have stories to tell yet) but I am also super weak to anyone asking me to write something, so I hope you enjoy this character sketch of Viktor! I am sure it has been done before a million times, but it’s where I wanted to start in this fandom =D Thanks again!!

@kyddeegan: After giving my all to the best short program of my entire career on Friday, I knew I had to skate a practically perfect free program. I put pressure on myself, I kept my head down and stayed focused and like I knew it would, everything came together in a beautiful skate that I’ll never forget. A nationals gold medal is something I’ve always wanted for myself, and getting to stand on that top podium spot was nothing short of a dream. With the secured spot on the Worlds Team, I have every intention of keeping my champion title. Thank you so much to everyone for the support and love, I’m going to keep fighting and doing everything I possibly can to make the rest of this season my absolute best. 💖💖💖 #uschamps17

Something I really love from Haikyuu is the amount of small details in the animation that weren’t really that necessary. Details that probably don’t even appear in the manga at all. The small gestures, both in the faces and the bodies of the characters. Small actions that add nothing to the plot but that add an interesting layer to the animation and the story.

I mean things like this:

Just an example of the many scenes I’ve seen in which, when a character in front is doing something, there are also characters in the background actually moving and doing stuff. Here it is a meaningful action (although it could have been skipped) but many times I find characters in the background moving when there is no real need to animate them.

Haikyuu is full of these moments and as a person who had always watched rather low quality anime in the past, finding this treasure makes me feel so grateful. I could find many more examples, but I’m sure you get the point.

little theory thing

Yuuri tells Victor he’s getting him something round and gold for christmas

this can be taken these two ways obviously

1. A gold medal

2. A gold ring

Now we know Kubo likes to put little foreshadowings into the show but I think that this could actually mean a ring and the reason why is because let’s face it. Kubo WANTS us to get confused and justify it as a medal. BUT I believe this is reverse psychology.

Obviously most people want a ring but they would probably after a minute come to conclusion that “oh wait a medal is gold and round too.” That is what Kubo wants!

They want us to believe it’s a medal only to surprise us with what we thought it was in the first place: a ring!

And yes, I understand that it’d be a bit early for marriage but I believe in the impossible. (even if it’s not an engagement ring I think it may be a promise ring)

This show LOVES foreshadowing so I think they may try to trick us but hey, I’m just guessing here

Prince!Youngjae AU (Preview)

A/N - As with most of my other series, I’ve done little previews so you can get a little sneak peek into what it’ll be like! The first part to this series is going up tomorrow and updates will be fairly regular (possibly weekly but I haven’t decided yet).

Being a member of the royal guard was something (Y/N) treasured. It was like a medal, showcasing her hard work and determination. The hours she had spent training her body and getting to peak physical condition so she could fight for her country were countless. But one day the crown prince, Youngjae, was attacked by a small group of assassins. (Y/N) had sensed something strange about the three men who wandered the royal grounds so followed them to see if her suspicions were warranted. When they tried to ambush him, she jumped out to save the prince. Now, she was to be his bodyguard. She would now have to protect him with her life and never let anyone with ill intentions touch him. She would have been happier about the role change if the prince was less naive and more active in helping his mother and father rule the country. All he ever seemed to do was wander round the grounds singing to himself, not really caring that they were at threat of war. (Y/N) knew it would be tough spending so much time with him but she had suffered worse, and knew she could put up with the prince, even if he ended up driving her crazy.

Part 1 | Part 2

Holby City + Emotional Abuse

So setting aside the #berena for a moment. I see that Holby city is presenting two different angles on same-sex couples. Berena has its issues but it’s generally a positive, loving couple of AAU Mums. On the other hand, Dom/Issac are clearly unhealthy. Unfortunately, this is a bit of a trope. Women=nutures, Men = abuse. (Sadface) but I think the show can teach something…

So…I know I have brought this up before but I’m stuck on this. So… the fandom, like now realizes that what Issac does to Dom is in fact straight up emotional abuse right?  It’s like they’re checking off the list;

Issac demanding that Dominic move in with him without any real consideration for Dom’s feelings = Control and manipulation.

Issac hiding Authur’s medal just to see Dom get upset then tell him he’s silly for being so upset.  =  Gaslighting.

Issac disrespecting Authur’s memory, generally mocking Dominic’s friendship and feeling for Authur = isolation, and humiliation.

Issac Making Dominic jump through hoops to apply for that promotion, knowing all the while he was never actually going to hire him  = Control and manipulation.

The reversal of blame, ‘yeah I treated you like shit because I love you’, and now we have evidence of a “huge fight” wherein Dom thought they had broken up because “You said horrible things to me” and Issac gave Dome the silent treatment OVER CHRISTMAS = Verbal Abuse followed by shutting out, silent treatment, with no apologies and reversal of blame and then more gaslighting blaming Dom for his own mistreatment and being too sensitive. Bullshit.

Holby Fans, This is a textbook emotional abuse.  I appreciate that the show is exploring this and showing how it doesn’t often appear right out of the gate. It evolves over time in a relationship. I appreciate that it shows how these types of situations occur. Dominic isn’t perfect, he’s flawed and he’s insecure in his own way. Nobody is perfect. We all have our messes. Our mistakes. Our flaws. An abuser uses our insecurities, our perfectly human flaws and needs against us. It doesn’t make itself apparent on day one, there are reasons we choose to stay with an abuser. Reasons we don’t see it at first. Reasons we blame ourselves. And often when we fight back we accept their blame for being ‘just as bad’ That doesn’t make it right and it doesn’t excuse the abusive behavior.

I think it’s also important to note that GLBT relationships have a harder time discussing this because we do desperately cling to our friends and media couple as role models. We lack representation so much we want to ignore when things are ugly. We joke and blow off dysfunction as “dyke drama” or “gay drama” and we disrespect our friends’ relationships in little ways all the time. There is still a thread- woven from generations of internal/external homophobia—  within our own community that doesn’t believe we deserve good, positive, LOVE.  When we fight with our lovers, do we have family or friend-models to talk about what’s normal and what’s not? Often we don’t. So we HIDE it. We deny it. We try to figure it out ourselves.

Friends. DON’T hide it. If you see anything in this Dom/Issac relationship that mirrors your own relationship — consider it carefully. Talk to someone. Use your resources. Find positive healthy support. DO NOT ISOLATE.

Love does not manipulate, control, blame, or make you feel small.

Love listens. Love lifts you up. You deserve better.

Plushenko talks about Yuzuru (8 Jan 2015)
You can hear his English at first.  Then from 1:28, there is Japanese voice-over.  My translation:

-His jumps are magnificent, perfect; it’s unbelievable. His jumps, his spins, he is much better than me.
-What I like about him is that he is always working and aiming higher, he is always doing his best.
-Figure skating is a sport. It’s not ballet. He pulled figure skating up to a different level. It is something that I was always aiming for.
[scenes of his performance from 2010 Olympics]
-I didn’t get the gold medal, but I jumped a quad. It didn’t matter that it was not necessary at that time. Now a performance with no quad is impossible. I want to say thank you to Yuzuru for pushing up the competition.

[scenes from Yuzu’s childhood]
Q:  Are you happy that your big fan has succeeded?
P:  Of course I’m happy. The figure skating world needs a new strong champion. For me, a real champion stays on the podium year after year after year. The other skaters, they are good but Yuzu is of a different quality. To break his record at this present time is not possible.

[scenes from recent ice show]
Q: Will we see Plushenko competing at 2018 Olympics?
P:  In my head, yes. I miss the competition; it’s special, completely different from ice shows. Whether I will compete or not will be decided after discussion with my coach and the federation.

[last part his English can be heard again]

Part 3 of 4

Sometimes I think the starkest illustration of what low standards us white dudes are held to in terms of recognition/achievement is the sheer number of books and films where you could remove the ostensible protagonist entirely without changing anything essential about the premise, plot or character dynamics.

I mean, I get that a lot of such media is doing a Generic White Male Audience Stand-in thing (and let’s leave aside for the moment the issue of why the generic audience stand-in is always a white guy - that’s a whole other can of worms), but if you’re going to hail him as a conquering hero at the end, at least have him do something that the other characters couldn’t have accomplished just as easily if he’d never existed. Don’t give him a medal just for showing up.

Something I just noticed

At the end of A New Hope where Han and Luke get their medals, Luke’s clothes are different from what he was wearing before, obviously. Now, considering he’d not exactly had the chance to bring a change of clothes WITH him, it can be safely assumed that he’s borrowing clothes from other people, maybe Wedge, or other members of the soon-to-be-formed Rogue Squadron.

But his pants have got second class bloodstripes on them. So like, originally I thought maybe those were awarded to him for acts of valor, but then I realized that they’re something only the Corellian government can give and it’s only given to Corellians (I’m pretty sure? Corellians have a weirdly exclusive culture as far as I’ve read/seen/heard), and thus far we only know one character who has both first and second class bloodstripes.

So I mean I’m not saying that Luke totally borrowed Han’s pants for the ceremony

But Luke totally borrowed Han’s pants for the ceremony

Bleach characters, the big bad of Bleach has been Kira this whole time! Your reactions?

As requested by anon. :)

Gin: Izuru…?

Gin: I’m so proud!

Gin: See? I said he was doing well.

Matsumoto: Oh come on, universe!

Matsumoto: I need at least one friend who is not secretly evil!

Rose: But….when I thought Izuru had died, my guitar wept for him.

Rose: Is my guitar evil too?

Rose: That might explain a lot.

Bazz-B: Yeah, come on! That shinigami guy is super dead! I killed him myself!

Aizen: Sometimes people fake their death.

Bazz-B: Can people fake a giant fucking hole in their torso?

Aizen: Um, yes.

Kurotsuchi: Also that sort of injury is very, very survivable.

Aizen: That too.

Bazz-B: ….well I still attacked your guys’ big bad first. I should get a medal or something.

Abirama: I don’t know why any of you are so fucking surprised.

Abirama: Anybody remember when that Kira guy forced me to kneel so that he could behead me? Anybody? Anybody?

Isane: He was also…weirdly willing to go along with Ichimaru Gin.

Isane: Getting mislead by a captain I can understand. But Kira went to Central-46. He saw all those murdered people! And he still went on helping Ichimaru.

Isane: That’s a red flag, there.

Hinamori: H-he also attacked me. And Matsumoto. Both times for Ichimaru.

Hinamori: I thought he was just trying to do his job.

Hinamori: But I guess, maybe, he just likes…to kill?

Hinamori: …

Hinamori: Am I terrible at reading people?

Hisagi: You and me both, apparently.

Hisagi: I-I just can’t believe that Kira is -

Hisagi: What is his plan, anyway?

Ichigo: Well…given the way his zanpakuto works, I’d have to say….beheading everyone, probably.

Ichigo: Bleach might be about to make a super dark turn.

I guess it’s official, then.

Love: People in manga called “Kira” can never, ever be trusted.

A Day Off - NickxJudy drabble

“Did we do something wrong?”

“I can’t think of anything we did wrong. But we must’ve done something wrong, otherwise why would Chief want to see us?”

“Maybe he wants to congratulate us. We’re pretty fantastic, you know.”

The fox and the bunny stopped at the door to Chief Bogo’s office. “Then again,” went on Nick, “I pretty much just ride along and try not to make things worse. So if there’s a medal involved, I’ll make sure you get to wear it.”

Time for more Book of Life Theorizing. (Beware, you'll probable be getting a lot of this today.)

Ok, I just noticed something. When Mary Beth (the narrator) was explaining where Chikal got the Amulet of Everlasting Life (Joaquin’s medal) from originally, she said he stole it and that Xibalba later stole it back. But who did Chikal take it from originally? I think we can safely assume it wasn’t Xibalba, since the guy is not only extremely intimidating but also a god, and thus fully able to keep his stuff safe. Then it must have been from someone else who Xibalba gave the medal to. But who would Xibalba have given it to? Let’s take a look at something from the graveyard at the beginning of the movie. (I apologize for the quality of the photo’s, I was taking pictures of my TV.) :

Pretty interesting sword right? According to Jorge Gutierrez, it’s called the Sword of Seven Sins. (It also looks quite a bit like Chikal’s sword, but that not relevant.) Guess who it originally belonged to? Xibalba.

Now let’s think about this. Why would General Mondragon have Xibalba’s sword? Unless Xibalba gave it to him. As we’ve already seen, Balby tends to prefer people like Joaquin, so it’s not much of a stretch to imagine he would have liked his dad. We also know that General Mondragon was a great warrior and he died fighting Chikal. What if the sword wasn’t the only thing Xibalba gave him? What if the reason that Chikal had the medal was because he took it from Mondragon?
