I figured, since my babies are nearing 1 year old, it’s time to write up an official post about the struggles my Ares has gone through.
Ares hatched 2 days after his clutchmate, and I immediately noticed he was weak and his limbs didn’t seem to function quite like they should. He also had these episodes where it seemed like every muscle in his body was cramping up at the same time, and he’d usually gape right as the episode started which made me assume he was in pain(though I can’t confirm that, most of this is just speculation). I’ve written a little more about this here but I also have a picture of this happening.
As you can see, it wasn’t the easiest thing for me to watch. It may look like he’s just sleeping, but he was walking only seconds before this. His legs would slowly curl back as pictured, and he’d gape as it was happening.
But, per my vet’s request, I put him on a heatpad set to 76 degrees Fahrenheit, fed him every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and weighed him every Saturday. I also gave him a small dish with a little bit of pure calcium(no D3). Each weigh in, he’d gained about .2 grams on average. Gradually, his limbs became more stable, and he could walk across wet paper towel without triggering one of his episodes. The last abnormal thing I remember noticing is that he would go to jump forward, and end up almost doing a back flip, and landing on his back. Regardless, I upgraded both him and his clutchmate out of their hatchling tubs when they hit 4 months old, with no problems!
I’m sure this is a rare occurrence, but if this does ever happen to anyone else in the reptile community, I hope this will help. He’ll be 10 months old in a few days, and despite being noticeably smaller than his clutchmate, there’s no sign of the issues he had at the start of his life.
