CAMERON GARDNER: Yesterday, when I went surfing. I was all alone and suddenly a pack of dolphins swam 5 feet in front of me, it was a really beautiful morning.
JC: Any emerging artists inspiring you at the moment?
CG: I’m inspired by so many things that I couldn’t pinpoint a few people. People inspire me, regardless if they do art or not. Being connected through the internet with so many people gives the opportunity to be inspired by something new everyday.
JC: Whats your current project all about?
CG: I don’t have any specific photo projects at the moment, I am always working on different stuff though. I’m always shooting and usually the work falls into place after. I do have an ongoing project called Lost Memories Project, I have been working on for a while. I collect old negatives, 35mm slides and old photographs, I have been sharing these photos on a blog at www.lostmemoriesproject.tumblr.com. I really enjoy the idea that none of the photographs have been seen and should be shared rather than sitting in the dusty box I found them in. It’s been really interesting, I have found photos from all over the world and a lot of the times the work is really inspiring too.
JC: Where are you currently living and how is it shaping you?
CG: Currently living in Whittier, CA where I grew up. I moved back a year ago, it’s definitely been an interesting ride. I find myself wanting to get away a lot after having been gone for 3 years in beautiful Santa Barbara, CA. It has been nice to spend some time with friends I hadn’t seen in a while, and visit familiar places again.
JC: One piece of advice to recent photography graduates?
CG: Take a break for yourself, I found that after going through a photo program that it can really kill your personal drive. Shoot a lot of personal work, find out what you really enjoy doing, not what you are told or think you should shoot. Go on a road trip, or somewhere new, meet new people, try and connect with as many other creative people as possible. Just constantly try and stay inspired with your work and life and good things will come.
JC: Any big plans for 2013?
CG: Definitely hoping to travel more and stumble upon some new adventures and meet new people. Looking forward to shooting for more clients, as well as shooting and experimenting with video work.
JC: Favourite tree?
CG: California Palm trees, or any good climbing tree.
