In that first picture of Curiosity it appears that we can see the entire rover and there is no boom, or shadow of a boom visible to which a camera would be connected. How was this photo taken?
REALLY AWESOMELY! There is actually one bit it doesn’t take a picture of…the six foot long boom and camera that take the mosaic picture (which is then compiled into a complete image back here on Earth by NASA’s digital artists).
Below is the part that sticks of the front of the rover that the boom connects to. You can see some weird artifacts in this image of the fact that the boom and camera cannot photograph itself.
