The Zephyr at Truckee, Part One

What one sees here is a westbound Amtrak California Zephyr first approaching, and then rolling into, Truckee, California, high in the Sierra Range.

To reach this spot, the train has closely followed the Truckee River up from Wadsworth, Nevada. This, of course, is along the original Central Pacific Railroad of transcontinental fame.

Five images by Richard Koenig; taken May 18th 2013.

These woodblock prints are based on watercolors Chiura Obata made in the summer of 1927 while on an expedition through California’s Yosemite Valley and High Sierra regions. He described the trip as “the greatest harvest for my whole life and future in painting.”
