There seems to be an awful lot of hate for Long Susan on twitter, and I can’t help but feel that people wouldn’t be quite as angry at her character if it were a man in her position.

Somehow it’s seen as more ‘evil’ for a woman to do things to get ahead, yet male characters doing the exact same deeds are often defended, their actions simply deemed as being necessary. And it’s nothing but bullshit sexism.

I can’t say I agree with absolutely everything Susan has done over the years, but I also have a lot of empathy for her character, because I’m not, nor never have been, in such a difficult position as her character has. Yet she still has gumption, and an awful lot of heart, too, despite all the chaos that has gone on.

So I thought I’d make this post as a Long Susan Hart appreciation post. She’s a fundamentally good character who cops a lot of sexist criticism. Personally, she’s one of my favourites, and I really hope that she’s on our screens until the very end of S5.

caitlinbird3651 TBT: I remember how sweet the caterers were to attempt an all-American Thanksgiving dinner for all of us when we were in Tokyo on Thanksgiving. I also love how @taylorswift loved our holidays and wanted to be home with family as often as possible. I’m still the Disney Kid who HAD to have a sparkly tree, flannel pajamas and a gooey homemade pre-demolition gingerbread house. She treated us all to an amazing Teppanyaki dinner, complete with live crazy prawns. One of the best dinners I’ve ever had.

JESS’S ALL TIME FAVOURITE FICTIONAL LADIES

LONG SUSAN HART/CAITLIN SWIFT, RIPPER STREET

“Know this, Duggan. Every moment I felt your foul breath on my face, your murderous fingers on my body, I thought of this. Dreamt of it. Your laywers, your estates and holdings, all will now be made to work for me. Everything that you have built, I will make it mine. […] Do not be confused husband. Everything I have said remains the case. I want none of you. I want none of any man.”

TBT: New Zealand.  End of the Speak Now tour.  I remember feeling like we were all on top of the world.  Pure magic. This framed picture was a gift to me that I will always treasure.  After how fast my world was spinning at that time, the pockets of serenity in these quiet and breathtaking little towns in Waiheke were so appreciated and coveted.   We just closed our eyes and heard and felt nothing but rare and peaceful silence.  Kinda made us want to do some random spontaneous interpretive earth-dances now and then.
