cadet pilot

Just throwing this out there: Pidge is excellent at computer systems and programming, binary, etc. Hunk is an expert mechanical engineer, and seems to enjoy cooking but as we see in the show, sometimes he has no idea what he’s throwing together hoping to make something edible.

Cooking is just chemistry, putting different elements together to make edible substances that fuel the body. If the ship has any kind of chemistry lab, they can make basic flavorings. But this doesn’t seem to be the specialty of any of the paladins. Shiro and Keith were both fighter/space pilots.

So proficiency in chemistry? I propose Lance. He was training to be a cargo pilot, and apparently taking it pretty seriously since he was the first one to be upgraded to fighter pilot when Keith got kicked out.

Cargo often includes dangerous chemicals. I could totally see part of his education including a variety of chemistry courses and memorizing Material Safety Data Sheets.

So one day he wanders into the kitchen where someone is trying to help Hunk with his cooking experiments and Hunk is just like “ugh, if only I had some salt!“ and Lance is just like “Sodium Chloride? I could make that pretty easy if this place has a chem lab. Want me to ask Coran?”

when i dream it happens in blue

When team Voltron is split up by a wormhole, Lance is thrown onto an icy and desolate moon. After two weeks of waiting, he reluctantly realizes he can’t stay put any longer if he’s going to survive. Across the universe, the other paladins manage to regroup, but they’re missing a critical link: the heart of team Voltron.

Set after season 1 because I think that Lance got absolutely cheated in season 2, this fic follows the Blue Paladin and his journey across the stars to find home.

Death is inescapable. There comes a certain point in a young person’s life–usually when they leave childhood behind–that this is somewhat accepted, tucked away, ultimately known but not realized. It’s not usually until much, much later in life that death becomes more tangible.

Defenders of the universe know no such luxury.

In the few months that Lance had been in space, he’d had some harrowing experiences, sure. But staring at the sickly purple barrier of the Galra force-field that had cut off any chance of escaping caused a sensation he wasn’t quite prepared for. He felt hollow, staring at the massive battalion they’d have to defeat to stay alive. He knew it was impossible, yet he knew he’d try anyway. His heart sank, and his gut soured, and he just knew. Lance knew that he would fight until he couldn’t anymore, fight until he died. For the first time in his life, he couldn’t think of a way out, a way to lift the team’s spirits. A joke bubbled in his chest but died on his tongue like a desert wasteland.

The purple flickered for a moment, then vanished.

A cover for an upcoming Tarkin short comic I’m planning to do! The timeline would be during Tarkin’s time as a cadet/ace pilot. Things happen. Sad things happen.

I’d probs be changing the cover altogether when the future comes who knows.

Voltron fanfic: Scar Tissue

I’m mildly obsessed with Shiro’s nose scar.

Rated: PG
Characters:  Shidge friendship fic. Pidge, Keith, Hunk, & Shiro.
Warnings: mild mentions of violence, Sheith hints if you squint.
Summary: Shiro snores.   Pidge isn’t sure how their family made it to Kerberos without killing him in his sleep for it, but Hunk and Keith are awake to talk about it.

(You can also read this fic on AO3!)

“I thought maybe the Galra did something to him so he didn’t have to sleep or … I dunno,” she trailed off at the looks Hunk and Keith were giving her.  “Look, it was a valid theory! We didn’t have any evidence he sleeps!”

“Except that he’s human ,” Keith said, incredulous.

Bodhi Rook - Cadet

From what limited info I’ve seen, poor Bodhi didn’t really have a great time at the Imperial Academy! I’m super interested in seeing any future materials that’d show formative snippets from the Rogue One team’s lives - and in particular something that would showcase why Bodhi felt a need to redeem himself and what exactly made him miserable within the Empire.

Let me preface this by saying that while I enjoy military history and have done a lot research into the military, navy, marine corps, etc., I have never served myself. (Though I almost joined the air force, but that’s a story for another day.) These ranks are an amalgamations of various institutions across the world and what I imagine one world representative military organization might be like, when you combine various arms together.

This is the ranking schema I’m using for Crosshairs. People are welcome to use this for their own fanfics as well if they like. I simply wanted something a bit more complex than what BioWare gave us, to differentiate between the different jobs one can hold in the Alliance.

Right off the bat, there are two paths respective recruits can take - though Basic is pretty much universally the same. I see them divided up into ‘marines’ aka those who will do the fighting and those who run things behind the scenes: intelligence, research, ship side tasks, engineering, etc. Recruits bound for the marines enlist at rank Private 2nd Class, and everyone else enlists at rank Serviceman 3rd Class.

Enlisted who have a degree already graduate basic at the highest Enlisted rank: Corporal or Serviceman 1st Class.

The NCO ranks follow the same patterns, except they are Alliance personnel who have advanced to Officer without going through the Academy and being granted a commission.

NCO’s who enter the Academy in order to advance their careers are promoted to Officer Cadet (marines), Ensign Cadet (pilots), Ensign (everyone else). The point at which Special Forces recommendations are first considered.

Some pilots enter flight school right out of basic, effectively ‘jumping ranks’, though some go the NCO route and pay their dues as flight technicians. They are not on a command path.

I added ‘General’ and ‘Fleet Admiral’ to the marine path.

The O6 - O10 on the ‘everyone else’ path are command ranks.

Some interesting First Order facts from the TFA Visual Dictionary

I haven’t seen these around so thought they might be useful, especially for fic writers etc. Some things people will know, but I decided to include everything interesting, just in case. Those in speech marks & italics are quoted directly.

  • Stormtrooper troop transporters are called Atmospheric Assault Landers (AALs). They carry up to 20 stormtroopers (2 squads).
  • To avoid the treaty restrictions that prevented major galactic corporations from selling arms to the First Order, BlasTech Industries and Merr-Sonn Munitions cynically spun off a subsidiary called Sonn-Blas Corporation, which operates within First Order space.”
  • Standard ten-soldier stormtrooper squads contain a slot for a single weapons specialist. Depending on mission profiles, that specialist may be a megablaster heavy assault trooper, a riot control trooper or a flamethrower.”
  • Common Resistance nicknames for flametroopers include “roasters”, “hotheads” and “burnouts”.”
  • Kylo’s lightsaber design is ancient, “dating back thousands of years to the Great Scourge of Malachor.” The crossguard blades emerge just after the main blade is turned on.
  • His nickname within First Order ranks (whispered behind his back) is ‘Jedi Killer.’
  • Phasma is in charge of ALL First Order stormtroopers.
  • Phasma disagrees with General Hux over what it takes to make a soldier. The methodical Hux has developed automated training regimes that simulate battle situations. Phasma believes such programmes don’t test the true heart of a soldier: courage and tenacity.”
  • Phasma’s armour is coated in salvaged chromium from a Naboo yacht once owned by Emperor Palpatine. Its polished finish helps reflect harmful radiation, but it serves primarily as a symbol of past power.” [How cool is this?]
  • A perfectionist, Phasma routinely patrols the areas under her command as a means of keeping her senses keen and her soldiers in line. Even in such an expansive operation such as Starkiller Base, Phasma makes most of the inspection rounds on foot, walking dozens of kilometres in a typical day.”
  • Hux continues to use the stormtrooper training regimen pioneered by his father, based on ideas the elder Hux hatched as an Academy commandant. Hux has total confidence in his father’s idea that stormtroopers trained through vivid simulations make the most loyal soldiers.”
  • The weird pen-like things attached to the breast of a First Order officer’s uniform are rank cylinders. “Access to command systems and certain areas of FO vessels and installations are governed by coded rank cylinders worn by officers.”
  • The Resistance has limited intelligence of the FO fleet, and many fear that the Resurgent-class is not the largest of the new Star Destroyer designs.”
  • Each standard day on board a Star Destroyer “is divided into six four-hour-long shifts, divided among three crew sections. Each section fosters a strong sense of unity and team identity.”
  • The Galactic Concordance prevented the FO from accessing the scattered Academies that had filled out the ranks of the Imperial Navy. Instead, the surviving Imperials created new Academies far from the prying eyes of the New Republic, situating them aboard Star Destroyers built in hidden shipyards on the far side of the galaxy. The young fleet officers produced by these shipboard schools often spend their entire lives aboard Star Destroyers, and many think of these giant warships as their homes.”
  • THE PILOT CORPS: The new generation of TIE fighter pilots undergo rigorous training not unlike the constant and dehumanising drilling faced by stormtrooper cadets. The pilots begin training at childhood, and most grow up within the corridors of Star Destroyers, becoming intimately familiar with starship operations. The FO maintains strict standards of reflexes, visual acuity and hand-eye coordination. Those pilots who fail to measure up are transferred to other roles within the fleet.”
  • Aboard FO Star Destroyers, TIEs are deployed from hangar conveyor mechanisms that carry them up from deeper storage decks.”
  • SPECIAL FORCES: The distinctive flashes of red that stand out from the all-black armour of some TIE fighters and their pilots are the mark of the Special Forces - elite starfighter pilots answerable directly to the upper command levels of the Starkiller operation. The markings date back to the decorated flight barons of the Old Empire.”

You know, one of the best things about the Star Trek fandom is that their exists no one singular ship. There is a multitudinous number of ships in the universe, each with their own special properties and a group of valiant captains, pilots, engineers, and cadets that pilot and keep it in top shape. Some are male, some female, and some can be considered both by their crews. But no matter what happens to the ship, there will always be someone out there that wants nothing more then for it to succeeded in its mission, and will support it to the very end.

Gundam Reconguista in G coming 2014.

“The series takes place in the timeline after Universal Century, called Reguild Century, and follows the story of a young pilot cadet and member of the space elevator protecting organization "Capital Guard” named Berli Zenam (ベルリ・ゼナム).

News of Yoshiyuki Tomino’s new mecha work was first unveiled in September 2011 under the codename G-Reco (Gレコ). Prior to that, Tomino had been discussing a novel project he was working on called Hajimetai Capital G no Monogatari, which revolved around a space elevator, and had a similar setting. The scenario for the show was completed and the anime began full production in 2012.

Reconguista in G was officially unveiled in a Gundam 35th Anniversary event on March 20, 2014. During the unveiling, Tomino explained that the “G” in the title stands for “Gundam”, but primarily means “ground”. He also explained that the word “reconguista” is a coined word based on the Spanish word reconquista; however, the Japanese audience prefers a hard “g” in the title which necessitated the change"

To say I’m excited about this would be an understatement.

P.S.: Ditto

Title: P.S.: Ditto

Fandom: Voltron The Legendary Defender

Pairing: Shiro/Keith

Rating: PG-15; some sexual themes

Wordcount: 2,000+ words

Summary: How Keith and Shiro realized love is a thing and it comes in the shape of boys and eyes with eyeliner.

Notes: It’s been so long since I’ve written anything and it’s not my usual fandom but I love them, alright?

It’s something Keith has never done before – want to know someone like this. Want to know them better than anyone else, than the stars he’s started counting when he was seven and hasn’t stopped yet, than the clothes they wear.

He sits behind Shiro, in pilot class, two years younger than everyone else and strangely, puzzlingly, he doesn’t feel out of place here. Maybe he’s been built for this, for watching things, for letting them rest against his palms, for admiring their shapes.

(Like sitting in the cockpit behind the songs of the engine he can translate like no one else, like staring at the curl of Shiro’s smile, the kiss of his collar against his neck, like the shine of stars, as old as galaxies, as young as them.)
