When you think of animals, think of this barnacle, Amphibalanus improvisus. The bay barnacle is a type of acorn barnacle is found in temperate and tropical waters throughout the world, but is thought to have originated near North America and been spread through shipping. This species was classified by Darwin himself as Balanus improvisus and both names are still in common usage.
