So my Mom bought me a bong for Christmas…. and it rips 😍💖

Empirical formula

The simplest whole-number ratio of atoms of each element present in a compound. The empirical formula is always the same as the actual formula for ionic compound but the empirical formula is not always the same as the molecular formula in molecular compounds.

Examples:

Sodium chloride (table salt)

  • ionic formula: NaCl
  • empirical formula: NaCl

Methane

  • molecular formular: CH4
  • empirical formular: CH4

Butane*

  • molecular formular: C4H10
  • empirical formular: C2H5

*Notice that the empirical formula is different from the molecular formula. C2H5 is the simplest whole-number ratio of C4H10. You can work out the empirical formula by dividing the subscript numbers by a factor of those numbers to get the simplest whole-number ratio.
