(some rich white celebrity steps up to the stage at the academy awards to accept an oscar)

“Right now…..Donald Trump…..he bad man.”

Journalism the next day: “____ totally went THERE in their speech last night” Edit:This isn’t a dig at famous celebrities trying to speak out against political injustice so much as those that do using incredibly blanketed and basic sentences like the equivalent of Hillary’s twitter going “delete your account” or the “GAY RIGHTS” Jennifer Lawrence joke. It’s mostly a satire on those who speak out as a way to gain attention rather than for the legitimate cause and have really basic speeches/opinions that validate that rather than taking the time to voice legitimate issues or anything with meaning. Right now celebs speaking out on Trump is one of the most sure-fire ways to get under his skin and rile up his supporters which I love, because this guy deserves to be shit on as much as possible. I just think it gets grating when those who may not receive the full impact of his actions or have the finances to stay safe and healthy when the going may get tough speak out for the common folk in the most simplistic if not condescending way possible only to be praised for it in the usual clickbait fashion. It’s an extremely limited scenario in the big picture but one that’s bugged me regardless and hence I wanted to make a joke about it. I don’t at all discredit many of the comments on this post and there’s merit to many of them but I just ask people stop flooding my inbox with anger over something that was meant to be a spoof on media habits and certain celebrity types rather than an annoyance towards making fun of a vile man who by all accounts deserves it

this is one of my absolute favorite kisses because it just seems so…real? so spontaneous?

when kisses happen on screen, we often see some sort of buildup, whether it’s a declaration, or people slowly leaning in, or people running toward each other, etc. or kisses usually have some sort of purpose, characters will kiss for the first time; they will kiss when they reunite, when they’ve been apart for whatever reason; they’ll kiss when they greet each other; they’ll kiss when they say goodbye to each other; their kiss will be the introduction of a scene; their kiss will be the ending of a scene. and those kisses can be absolutely wonderful, skam is actually full of them, but the fact that we’re mostly used to those kinds of kisses makes this one seem all the more special and unique

because this kiss is kind of just a….“just because” kiss? i kiss you just because you’re here, i kiss you just because i look at your face and i’m drawn to your lips, i kiss you just because i can, i kiss you just because i’ve wanted to kiss you every hour of everyday for so long and i wasn’t able to, but now i am, so i will. just because why not. just because we can. just because we want to. just because

this kiss almost looks improvised, but we know it’s not, it’s 100% planned - the way it happens, the moment it happens, the angle. and that’s one of the show’s biggest strength, the fact that it manages to make scripted authenticity seem so unscripted. and it’s just a little kiss, it’s just a little thing, but the sum of all these little things, of all these genuine-looking moments we see in skam is exactly what makes the characters and their stories feel so real

HOW TO TEACH YOURSELF LANGUAGES SUPER EFFICIENTLY

I write this bcz I’m a huge language enthusiast and I’m frustrated about the way most methods and language classes/courses approach the process of learning. I’m not a professional but I have a lot of experience in studying foreign languages: I have taught myself Lithuanian and reached the upper intermediate level (B2) in 4-5 years without much help from others, and in Spanish reaching the same level took me only 2 years bcz I simultaneously studied it at school and already knowing French helped me a little. I want to help everyone who wants to start a new language, does not have the possibility to join a language course or just feels frustrated of the stagnation they might experience in the early phase of learning a foreign language.

So, if you want to learn a new language, I suggest following tips:

• Immerse yourself from the beginning! This is really important so that you can get yourself familiar with the intonation and pronunciation of the language. Listen to radio or tv and try to read whatever you can (ingredient lists from the food packages, newspaper articles, whatever!) it doesn’t matter if you can’t understand much yet, it will come! If you start a language with a new alphabet learn the alphabet really well first thing.

• Get an overview of the grammatical structure of the language! This is often not properly done in language courses where you learn some vocabulary and greetings but after 60 pages of the textbook you still have no idea how many verb tenses or noun cases the language has. Take a look even at the “hardest” topics, bcz they might not be that hard after all. (for example the Spanish equivalent of past perfect is much easier than the present tense)

 • With that being said, learn to recognise past tenses even when you are still learning the present tense! I find it absurd that most courses expect you to master present tense _perfectly_ before even taking a look at other tenses. Most of the time, in everyday communication, past tenses are used more frequently than the present tense + in some languages mastering the past tense can also help you to form the conditional. So, learn the past tense earlier than most ppl would recommend!

 • In general, study the easiest things first! If you find something particularly difficult you gain more confidence and knowledge if you first focus on what you find more interesting (however, you can’t postpone studying boring topics eternally, especially if you are preparing or hoping to prepare for an exam at some point) In Lithuanian, I taught myself a lot of grammar before learning how to tell the time… and it was ok.

• For material: usually the country’s universities have a reading list on their website which proposes what books one could use to study the language. These are often preferable to handbooks aimed for tourists and some language methods for beginners because those mostly focus on useless vocabulary you might only need when you rent a car or book a room in a hotel. The grammar is often also relatively poorly explained in those “tourist language books”, whereas books that are aimed at immigrants or university students usually focus more on the efficient language acquisition and are written by professors and specialists. If you are persistent enough and google all possible search words in both English and the target language,  you can probably find whole textbooks in PDF format, which you can then save on your laptop.

• Don’t get stuck on vocabulary! Remember that grammar is the skeleton of the language and that vocabulary is the muscles hair and eventually the clothes you use to dress up and embellish your apperance. Vocabulary is useful once you know how to use it. For me, learning vocab is the hardest part of a new language, especially bcz I like starting languages that are not really similar to any other languages I know (consider Lithuanian and Greek when I previously knew Finnish, English, French and Spanish) ofc you need to learn some of it to be able to form sentences but most traditional methods focus on that too much. My suggestion is to read a lot: start by children’s books and comics and gradually get more advanced material. When you read them, make notes!! Look up the words you don’t know and don’t be afraid of using unconventional, seemingly challenging ways to learn, such as buying a bilingual poetry collection and trying to decipher what the original poem says and compare it to the translation. 100% recommend, even for the beginner level + it’s a nice way to connect to the culture but still focus on the language itself, not on the way ppl make breakfast in that country. (That’s something that irritates me a lot in most Youtube’s language videos where ppl are just discussing the traditions of the country in English when you had come there to look for the explanation of grammatical structures or just to hear the language being spoken. smh.)

• A really important thing about vocabulary is to learn all the abstract words, such as conjunctions, really soon! For example, if you find yourself in a situation where you have to use the words therefore and otherwise,  it is almost impossible to try to explain those words without first translating them to another language.

• Make vocabulary learning more interesting and deep by learning about the etymology of the words you learn. It can be mind-blowing and it helps you to remember the words better.

That’s it!

I hope these tips inspire you in pursuing your interest in foreign languages and facilitate your learning process. I might add more to this if I remember I have forgotten something of great importance.

things Even experiences with sleepy/tired Isak:

  • lots of soft kisses and nose nuzzling
  • the radiant soft pink glow on his skin he always gets (mostly those adorable cheeks) when he’s cosy and warm in Even’s arms under their duvet
  • quiet whispered discussions about anything and everything, what they’re gonna do that day, how their homework is going, when they’re next visiting parents. just cosy domestic stuff that Even loves.
  • comfortably quiet breakfasts, sometimes over their second hand kitchen table and sometimes in bed, where they share sleepy smiles and nudge each other’s knees playfully while they eat
  • slowly dancing around their flat (if you could even call it that), as close together as two people could possibly be, the sides of their heads resting together and their arms wrapped like vines around the others waist just listening to each others breathing and their hearts beat because neither of them are awake enough to talk
  • Isak whining that they don’t need to get out of bed and meaning Even sets alarms ten minutes earlier now to accommodate Isak’s need for snuggle time
  • half arsing dinner and just ordering take out or giving up with it all together because they just want to lie down and recharge from the day’s events and how bad can it be to skip a dinner here or there
  • Isak falling asleep literally anywhere if he’s tired enough. over the kitchen table, sat in the school cafeteria, that one time Isak had been in the shower too long for even a 17 year old boy and Even went in to check on him and it turned out Isak had sat down under the shower and fallen asleep there despite (or maybe because of?) the warm water raining down on him
  • when Isak’s tired his brain gets things muddled up and his sentences sometimes come out backwards and he doesn’t even realise (like the time he asked Even if he’d homework’d his finish and Even said he didn’t study Finnish and they both stared at each other in confusion for a solid 60 seconds). most of the time Even can figure out what he means thankfully

things Even experiences with Tired™ Isak:

  • Isak getting overly emotional about everything, with all logic going out the window. homework unfinished? Isak is psyching himself out into thinking he’s going to fail all his classes. Even looked at him strangely? Even is realising Isak is a mess and he doesn’t have time for him. Isak burns dinner? he’s an impossible human being it’s no wonder his family fell apart when he can’t even cook a simple omelette. you get the idea.
  • Isak’s temper going from 0-50000 real quick. but his face always crumples before he’s even finished snapping and snarling (or shouting on the odd occasion)
  • having to wrap Isak up in so many layers and blankets because when he’s tired Isak cannot keep the cold from his bones and constantly shivers and shakes even when it’s a warm day
  • holding Isak close in the small hours of the morning while he tries to sleep, rubbing Isak’s back and stroking his curls and sometimes even rocking him gently, just wanting to help his exhausted boy sleep
  • the few times it got so bad that Even woke up to Isak shaking against him trying not to cry and when Even gathered him closer still his heart breaking when the tears spilt over Isak’s cheeks and he choked out I just want to sleep
  • the utterly terrifying night that Even can’t think about even now without breaking into a sweat. he’d woken up to the sound of retching and stumbled across to their small bathroom and found Isak hugging porcelain with a half empty bottle of sleeping pills on the floor.
  • for a wild second Even thought it was a suicide attempt and he was horrified that he’d missed warning signs that weren’t there, but when he dropped to his knees Isak choked out an apology and the tears spilled over (whether it was from the stress of vomiting or the emotional strain is still unknown) and he kept repeating that he was so tired and he just wanted to sleep. that was when Even took matters into his own hands and made Isak a doctor’s appointment
  • the many a night that Even woke up and through bleary eyes saw Isak lying awake next to him just staring blindly up at the ceiling
  • Isak not being mentally present at all for short stretches of time. sometimes he’ll even space out midsentence, to the extent that Even’s wondered if maybe Isak is having absent seizures rather than just being too exhausted to function

it’s so funny to me how much the homestuck fanbase changed in 2011-2012

like, initially hussie’s audience was largely just nerdy webcomic fans until it kind of branched out and was comprised mostly of those geeky ass cishet dudes who argue about power levels and call themselves gamers and shit

however, around hivebent the fanbase shifted immensely and a lot of teenagers and young adults – esp girls, and esp LGBT ppl – got super into the comic to the point where it pretty much blew up

and a lot of the geeky cishet dudes who followed the comic the longest were super bitter about it and talk at length about how “gayness” and “tumblr” and “shipping” supposedly “ruined” homestuck

however… for the great majority of homestuck’s popularity and updates it was a character-driven story with a super cool concept that carried the story but was largely never explored in-depth. we know very little about the setting (alternia, earth, etc) or the intricacies of the game mechanics (classpects etc) but we DO know quite a bit about the characters’ relationships and interactions

and that’s what kills me! tbh, character interaction and character development was ALWAYS one of hussie’s biggest strengths as a writer. it’s so funny that weirdo nerd guys who care exclusively about classpect nonsense, game mechanics, etc and proudly proclaim the “only ship they care about is john/roxy” don’t like the way the comic turned out

whether they were the intended audience or not, homestuck was never meant to be the type of media they’d really enjoy. i don’t know why they expected back to back epic fight scenes and explosions and grand heterosexual romances instead of hundreds of pages of insecure teenagers talking about their feelings. that’s always been a huge part of what homestuck was.

Shitty knows way too much about housing codes and property law.  He initially learned property law to save the Haus from being condemned, but then he realized that reading archaic, flowery law opinions while high was the most fucking hilarious thing ever.  Everyone at his law school is confused by and a little afraid of Mr. B. Knight, because while no one else wants to touch all those old, mostly nonsensical British common law cases, Shitty eats that shit up

Band Sections expectation vs. reality
  • Flutes expectation: A bunch of girls who talk about the cute boys in the percussion section
  • Flutes reality: A bunch of girls who try to kill each other over first chair, the one guy in the section just plays Zelda songs all the time.
  • Clarinets expectation: Kinda the nerdy quiet people.
  • Clarinets reality: They're still quiet, but because they talking shit the whole time.
  • Saxophone expectation: Idiots playing sexy sax man thing all the time.
  • Saxophone reality: Idiots playing sexy sax man thing AND the epic sax man solo
  • Oboe expectation: Dorky kid who takes 6 AP classes.
  • Oboe Reality: Out of tune dork who takes 6 AP classes, overall really nice people. Trust the oboe with your life, just not with intonation.
  • Bassoon expectations: Probably plays DnD and hangs out with the saxophones.
  • Bassoon reality: Plays DnD with the low brass.
  • Low Brass expectation: The foundation of the band so they have to be put together
  • Low brass reality: wrong. Mix of nerds and stoners, generally pretty funny.
  • Horns expectation: plays great, never heard them play a wrong note. Quiet, keeps to themselves, no ego.
  • Horns reality: Stopped playing after the first 10 bars of only upbeats, plays what the trumpets have because they want melody. Biggest egos in the band, but keeps it on the DL
  • Trumpets expectation: Plays crazy high notes, giant egos.
  • Trumpets reality: attempts high notes, fails, thinks they got it, flaunts that they got that note. (no one believes them)
  • Percussionist expectation: snare rolls, lady killers, sunglasses emoji.
  • Percussionist reality: Was the director talking to us? no? okay cool, so got any 5's?

Since the Eldest Curses is an adult series I doubt that my parents would get the books for me anytime soon !so I was wondering if my lack of knowledge (about the trilogy ) would mean that I wouldn't exactly understand the happenings of TDA,TLH and TWP. Will I miss out on alot ? Thxx

No. We're very aware that some teens won’t be able to read an “adult” series (though it’s no racier than plenty of adult books that cross over to young adult audiences, the characters do have sex.) Therefore anything in it that’s immensely significant to the overall plot of the Shadowhunter books will simply be mentioned in TDA or TWP. It’s not as if Magnus and Alec aren’t also in those.

Mostly TEC is about spending more time with Magnus and Alec, deepening our knowledge of them as characters, and enjoying adventures with them. Remember that both the first and second books of TEC take place before the beginning of TDA and you will already have read 2/3 of TDA when you read them. If you have understood TDA so far, is it likely you’ll stop understanding it because TEC got published?

You can read TID without TMI, TDA without TID. All the Chronicles interlock but none render other series incomprehensible. People read TDA without TMI and understand it fine. I do think reading them all deepens understanding and enjoyment but it isn’t required.

(I hope your parents don’t keep you away from everything in the “adult” section since that’s just the “fiction” section. Jane Eyre, Lord of the Rings, Catch-22 – half my favorite books when I was a teen were technically “adult”!)

Art Therapy

Request: I was wondering if you would write something were the reader and Bucky fell in love, but Natasha was really horrible and told the reader to stay away from Bucky, Bucky doesn’t understand why

@melconnor2007

Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Fem!Reader [Enhanced]

Word Count: 6,658

Bucky lay in bed staring at the ceiling. He couldn’t sleep most nights. The rare times when he could, his mind was plagued with nightmares. The doctors in Wakanda had assured him that it was perfectly normal. His psychiatrist at the Avengers compound told him that the therapy would help with it. He even had a prescription for sleeping pills after he mentioned his insomnia. But Bucky didn’t like taking them, the feeling of something making his mind hazy was too close to how he used to be while under Hydra’s control.

Langst-ish?

Why do you guys assume Lance talks a lot in his lion? For the most part it’s Keith and Pidge who do the most talking other than Shiro.

Now, I headcanon Lance with ADHD and depression because I have it and he acts a lot like me. Now, the thing with ADHD is that sometimes, even without medication, you become so focused on getting a task done and disruptions are very stressful because you have to work and work and /work/ until the thing is perfect and you still aren’t happy with it.

But others times…other times it’s laying in bed, immobilized with anxiety because you know what was have to do, but you just /can’t/ do them.

I think Lance works the same way, because at the beginning of season two, he’s really quiet, just informing Shiro about a rocket thruster or something. Other than that, it’s all Keith and Pidge.

Lance is staying quiet because he’s very focused and he’s trying his best to support everyone, to make sure they are where they need to be. Hell, he didn’t even try to show off while in Voltron all of season two. He just kind of…stayed back. This is also evident when the team decided to go visit the BoM base and Lance stayed behind. He was there for back up and support because he doesn’t have a big gun to keep people off or the skills to hack into the computers. Also he was still probably embarrassed because he considers himself the ‘sharpshooter’ and he couldn’t hit a guy run towards him in a hallway. That’s a bruise to the already shaky ego he has.

He was bubblier in season one, and you can see he’s toned down a lot in season two, only talking excessively in a scene or two, and those are mostly when he’s not with the paladins or explaining something to one person and the audience. In fact, it seems all of his moments of real doubt show up when he’s alone, and that happens to me all the time.

When people are around, an ADHD brain is too busy and buzzing to focus on something bad or negative unless it’s heavily affecting, and sometimes it just goes away for maybe an hour or two, but as soon as the stimulation calms down, you’re stuck with your brain still buzzing, but those busy thoughts turn inward to pick apart everything in your personality or looks or brain that you don’t like.

He’s too distracted from his problems because 'people!!! What are they doing!!!’ Lance is probably always engaged, but as he gets older, he learns where it’s okay to talk.

I don’t know if it’s maturity, or he’s losing hope, but he’s becoming a different person and losing a lot of what made him so fun in the beginning.

Season 3 needs to address the fact that Lance is growing, he’s changing and no one has ever commented on it, especially the people he looks up to, like Coran, Shiro and Allura. Still, Keith and Pidge earn a ton of praise because their somewhat open with their growth.

Lance isn’t really like that. Hell, we don’t even know his last name! He keeps things to himself a lot more, and started off trying to talk frivolously to make up for it, but he never said much that had a lot of substance. It was just chatter and he’s using it to kind of keep people from getting too close. For what reason is still unclear.

He’s even began to like…separate from the group a bit? He doesn’t consider himself on the level of his peers and therefore stays back to let them shine and he stays in the background for support. That’s where he feels he can get the most done as back up, in the back of the pack watching everyone’s back, but as that happens, everyone keeps moving forward and he feels left behind, emotionally and now it seems intellectually.

He talks himself up so much because he thinks that will disguise him to be on the same level as them, but it seems outrageous to others because they don’t see Lance beneath them. They see him as their relative equal and they think his self aggrandizing behavior is putting him above them, and that’s why they shoot it down. The team assumes its Lance attempting to be superior, when really he just thinks he’s putting them on even ground and why it rocks his world when they disregard it. Lance sees it as them acknowledging they he’s worse than them.

Poor baby.

How to Become an ALT in Japan

Basic Requirements

1. A university bachelors degree
-Any degree is ok, Latin American Studies, German, Linguistics, Astro-Physics, Sociology, doesn’t matter as long as it’s at least a bachelors

 2. A clean criminal background check
-Have you been convicted of a murder? Are you a pedo? Do you have outstanding warrants in 3 states? Did you go to jail for a hit and run? Japan doesn’t want you.

 3. Appropriately healthy and able bodied
-If you have a something that will prevent you from doing your job well, you will most likely not be hired. For example; you can’t use stairs, you can’t stand for 45 minutes at a time, you have a severe speech impediment (I know people here with lisps), things like this prevent you from teaching at full capacity and most places don’t have the time or resources to make special accommodations for you.

What other skills might recruiters be looking for?

1. Japanese language ability
-NOT required for most positions, but helpful for communication both in and out of the workplace. Unless you live in a metropolitan area, the average Japanese person’s English is VERY limited. I know many people who came here with zero Japanese, but nowadays there are many with at least rudimentary Japanese. People rarely come here fluent, but many people study Japanese while living here to take the JLPT and their level improves by leaps and bounds. I am not one of those people, so don’t ask me for more details lol

 2. TESL/TEFL certification
-NOT required for most positions, but some private companies are starting to lean more towards certified individuals. And honestly, those give you a lot of skills you will absolutely need when teaching English.

3. Teaching degree
-NOPE, not required in 99.9% of the cases. I know a few people with them who are ALTs, I’ve heard mixed opinions on how well it helps them as an ALT. Some find it demeaning to work subordinate and be given limited control/responsibilities, other find it freeing because they can spend more time teaching and less time with test related paper pushing and discipline management.

4. Good attitude, flexibility, people skills
-You need to be able to present yourself as someone trustworthy and amiable to recruiters. The environments ALTs work in are often high-paced, prone to sudden last second changes, and being able to make friends in the office and keep a happy face with students is incredibly important.

5. Prior experience
-Have you worked in a daycare before? Have you volunteered in tutoring centers? Have you led discussion groups as a major requirement?  Have you ever studied abroad? Have you ever volunteered in foreign classrooms? Have you taken charge of a club and organized events? Did you dorm with international students in university? Have you worked for an international program before? Have you given private language lessons before? These are the kinds of things that show you have experience in things that ALTs frequently encounter.

Can I mention my love of [INSERT JAPANESE CULTURE HERE]?

Yes, but keep is professional, relevant, and brief.

“I became interested in Japan after watching Spirited Away, the cultural aspects of the movie fascinated me and made me want to learn more about Japan.” OK
“I have a collection of anime pillow cases, my favorite is Miku Hatsune in this pose.” NO

“I started listening to Japanese music in high school. I eventually started learning Japanese to better understand the lyrics.” OK
"When Pierrot broke up, I was shattered that the fanfic community would move on to other ships.“ NO

“My school offered a short course on Japanese tea ceremony, and I thought the way that it formed historically was extremely interesting.” OK
“I want to learn the way of the samurai.” NO

“I’m very interested in Japanese video game production companies. I went to college and majored in game design and I want to further study it by living in Japan and experiencing the community in person.” OK
“I want to play Resident Evil on fiber optic LAN with Japanese players so I can pwn more n00bs when I get back to America.” NO

What kind of ALT positions are available?

First and foremost: READ AND RESEARCH

If you do not do your own intensive research, you can get taken advantage of. You hear horror stories from people here all the time, and those mostly come from people didn’t research what they were getting themselves into. I cannot make a comprehensive guide to the THOUSANDS OF KINDS OF ALT positions across the country, this is only an overview. Look at that link, and always do extensive research of the companies/programs you’re interested in working for.

1. Government
 AKA JET Program
-The JET Program is the only government ALT program. It makes the Japanese government the middleman in your arrangements, which takes less money from your paycheck and gives you a more trustworthy means of income. It’s very competitive and the application process takes about 6 months. They only hire once a year. It’s arguably the best program, as it pays well, you have a lot of guaranteed vacation time, and they pay for your flights to and from the country. On the downside, you don’t really have a lot of say in where you are placed. Also, you cannot get a transfer unless VERY specific requirements are met. Also some prefectures/localities are nicer to their ALTs than others, but if they try to fuck you over you know you have the Japanese government backing you and they will keep you from being taken advantage of.

 2. Private Dispatch
examples: Interac, AEON, Borderlink, JIEC and MANY others
-These are private companies that workplaces hire to provide them with ALTs. Workplaces do this because some of the intricacies in hiring an ALT and getting them a VISA and housing are really complicated, and they’d rather pay a middleman than deal with it. Upsides, you get a little more wiggle-room with being transferred. Downside by far is the pay. It depends on the company, but that middleman definitely takes a big chunk of your pay. If you work for a place like this, you need to VERY carefully read your contract. Research dispatch companies carefully, check their ratings online, see what former employees have to say about them.

 3. Private Hire
AKA working directly under the local government office, a private company, or even one-on-one’s in wealthy households
-These are places that will directly hire you without a middleman. Obviously, you need to look carefully at the details of your contract before working privately. Most local government places won’t hire you without prior ALT experience in Japan. Private English Conversation Schools (Eikaiwa) have non-9 to 5 working hours to provide for business workers and students. They sometimes require you to already have a VISA prior to being hired. Private Hire really is outside of my experience, but from what I understand they can pay as well as JET, but don’t usually have as many perks.

Where do I look for open positions?

GaijinPot is the website I’ve heard of the most. Check there and research research research. There are scammers, be careful.

JET hires once a year starting around September or October. It’s available online on their official webpage.

There are a bajillion different dispatch companies. I couldn’t possibly name them all, I don’t really have a lot of experience with them, and don’t know which are particularly good or not. Check Google-sensei for their applications, websites, and reputations.

Other than that, please be wary of Craigslist. Although legit job openings do show up, there are scammers. If it’s someone looking for a “private female in-home English tutor from ages 19~25” or something like that, don’t be dumb. Many will require you to have a VISA with a minimum of 1 year on it already. Many will require you to already live in the area of the position. Research everything carefully.

Words of warning

If you think mental health issues are stigmatized in your home country, oh honey you ain’t seen nothin` yet.

If you have mental health issues, Japan may not be the place for you. You may think going to Japan, being surrounded by your hobbies and interests, and just “getting away” will make things better… IT WON’T.

Please be aware that you most likely will not be able to get your meds over the counter in Japan. And it’s not uncommon for your meds to be banned entirely even with a prescription. Bi-polar, anxiety, OCD, depression? Your meds might not be available here. Oh and having people send them over from home by mail can get you detained and deported if you’re caught.

You’ll also be leaving the support of friends and family by coming to Japan. The ALT community is pretty cool, but people come and go so quickly, it’s hard to find groups of people that will stick together through really tough spots.

Supervisors and coworkers aren’t much help either. In Japan, people don’t talk about mental health issues at all. If you take meds for anything other than a physical illness, you do it in private where people can’t see you. If you see a psychiatrist, you do it in a different prefecture, where no one can see you. It’s not uncommon for Japanese people to be asked to leave their jobs because their boss or coworkers have suspicions.

If you self medicate with something like marijuana, be aware that recreational drug use here is VERY VERY VERY illegal. Marijuana use is treated with the same seriousness as crack cocaine. You WILL be caught, you WILL be detained, you WILL be tried without a lawyer present, you WILL be held in solitary, you WILL be convicted of drug possession, and you WILL be deported.

Some ALTs will replace their marijuana use with alcohol. That goes about as well as it sounds :|

For LGBT, if you’re used to a very supportive queer community, it’s not the same here. Japanese people are extremely closeted and unless you live near a large metropolitan area, getting into the gay scene is nearly impossible. I’m fine because I was never in the gay scene back home, but for some people it’s very hard.

If you’re trans and want to come here to transition, please reconsider. I would suggest not coming to Japan as an ALT if you intend to transition in the immediate future. If your gender dysphoria is pretty bad, you’re gonna have a bad time. Gender segregation and enforcement of gender roles will probably seriously affect your mental health. The paperwork for transitioning is even harder from overseas and lot of things need to be done in person so you’ll have to fly back and forth from your home country a lot (which is damn expensive and needs vacation leave). Even if you do get everything done, there’s no telling how your work will respond. They won’t outright say they’re firing you for your gender identity, that’s illegal, they’ll come up with some other reason.

People who come here with a goal like paying off college loans or wanting to experience another culture usually have a better time that people who come here because OMG I JUST LOVE JAPAN. Please keep that in mind.

I just wanted to kind of say thank you - even though that last answered ask wasn't for me, I'm an artist who just.. doesn't feel like their art is very good. And I also feel like it'll never amount to anything like yours has. Sometimes it really sucks, trying to draw for fandoms and stuff, because my art is so sub-par and it's just... not good. I love your art so much - I want to be as good as you one day. I've been practicing a lot, but... I worry I'll never be as good as I want to be.

Never say never is what you should stick with!

I don’t say that much, but back when I was starting, I was learning from Burdge’s tutorials a lot. I think her tutorials were the very first I found even before I knew something like tutorials existed:”D I didn’t feel my best back then either…. I just. I wanted to be where the people weree~, where Burdge was. and I thought how can I ever catch up to these amazing artists. But seriously, practice takes you WAYS. Not immediately, of course, but it does.

Personally, I’m that type of person who always competes with people even when (mostly) those people don’t even know I, in fact, want to overcome them. I even have that while riding bicycle and passing by random cyclists, and it was the same when I was swimming. So.

Take that ~I want to be like them~ and make it your healthy goal. There is probably nothing that can get you to your limits like healthy rivalry does. It drives your passion and hidden resources.

The more you draw the more changes you notice. You grow to like your art a bit more, you grow to see the mistakes in art of people you idolized when you just started. It’s a process and it’s a journey;)

Stay strong!

Hello! Could you do a hoseok mermaid au please? I just really find that concept real cute :)) and and i just wanna say i love your bloggg !

really felt like writing some hoseok,,,,so here you go!!!

  • is a merman,,,,but his lower part is smooth and not scaley,,,it’s more similar to a shark than to a fish
  • he has double fins near his hips and some scars around them because he’s always trying to get up close to new coral and new fish that he hasn’t seen before and his friends jin and yoongi always tell him to watch himself,,,,,but hoseok kind of lives for adventure and never listens so,,,
  • his skin is a golden tan but once you get to the gills near his neck it turns slightly blue like his tail with small speckles running from below his jaw up into his cheekbones
  • wears shark teeth earrings that taehyung made him
  • when he smiles it’s like ,,,,,,there’s sunshine underwater????? rumor has it it reflects up into the sky???
  • but also when he smiles u can see that some of his teeth are super duper sharp compared to a normal mermaids
  • you actually work at a small seaside cafe during the summers that sits right on the boardwalk to the ocean
  • and on some mornings the owners trust u with opening up the place but,,,,that’s like super early around 5am,,,,,and some people are out mostly those who jog on the boardwalk and all that
  • but the beach is practically vacant but one day ur sure u can see the figure of someone sitting in the rocks close to underneath one of the boardwalks bridges
  • and u think,,,,,for a moment,,,,,that u have to be hallucinating,,,or maybe the person ur seeing spent the night there????
  • worried u grab some food from the cafe,,,,and head out to see if the person might be hungry in case they’re homeless or something
  • but as ur climbing over the sharp rocks you accidentally scrape your arm which somehow makes the boy a couple yards away react
  • (maybe it has something to do with a sharks keen sense of smell,,,esp for blood)
  • but he turns and for a moment u just freeze because,,,,he’s too far to hear u??? right??? but u wave awkwardly either way,,,wincing when u realize ur hand has started to bleed
  • but you just clutch your fingers into a fist and try to make ur way over and the boy,,,,,once ur only three feet away,,,,is still looking at your hand
  • and u notice how handsome he is,,,,but theres some kind of discoloration in his face,,,,and u see something that looks like fins on his neck and ur like wha-
  • but he reaches out before u can say anything and takes ur hand thats still in a fist, gently prying it open and then?????? bringing it to his lips
  • and ur like ?!?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?1? UM but when he pulls back he smiles and u see his teeth and ur like even more confused but he just keeps grinning and goes
  • “u should wrap the cut with seaweed, it’ll stop ur bleeding” and ur like caught between being at a loss for words because did this stranger lick your wound? why does he have gills? his eyes are such a pretty sparkling brown? what is going on?
  • and hoseok suddenly splashes his tail which diverts ur attention and ur like OH MY GOD MERMAID
  • and hoseok bursts into laughter and is like “yep!!! sometimes people say sharkmaid,,,,sharkman,,,,but yeah!! my names hoseok by the way!!”
  • and he sticks his hand out like it’s the mOST casuaL Thing
  • but the only words u can blurt out are “people know about you?” and hoseok blinks a bit and laughs again and is like “not really!!!! but i realized u were hurt so i couldnt just slip away into the water.”
  • his smile settles on his face again and ur still standing there pretty sure ur in bed dreaming rn
  • when hoseok points at the bag and is like “for me???” and ur like “y-y-yeah but it’s a- a- -t–tuna–tuna- s-sand-sandwhich i-so-sorry-didn’t know-kn -know u wer-e a m-mermaid-shark-sharkmaid-mer—me–merma”
  • and hoseok seems a little shocked by your shaking voice and he takes the bag anyway and thanks u and asks if u wanna sit beside him he’s going to leave soon since people are going to start coming out but since u already know he’s here ^^
  • and u do,,,knees basically giving out because ur still looking at him like this- what-
  • and up close u can see his gills better and the long,,,blue fins near his waist and where his ears should be,,,the shark teeth swaying from them every time he tilts his head to give u a smile
  • and u dont know what to even ask or say all u can think of is “are u,,,,a prince?? like in little mermaid she’s a princess so-” and this cracks hoseok up again
  • and he’s like no no im normal,,,,just like you
  • and you’re like no no no u have a.,,,,,,tail,,,,,,,,a shark tail,,,,,,i just have legs
  • and hoseok is like this is true but hey we both have eyes and a nose and look ur cute!!! i cute too!!!
  • and ur like kjsdhfgfds oh,,,,yes,,,u are cute,,,,,but im n-
  • and hoseok puts his finger to ur lips and is like “nope! ur cute. ive seen some humans before,,,,,none as cute as you”
  • and the compliment makes u flush and u look down at the water
  • and hoseok thinks to himself that are all humans this shy,,,,,it’s even more endearing than he thought,,,,
  • when suddenly a boats horn passes by and hoseok slips into the water off the rocks and it startles u
  • but he pocks his head up above the water and is like “thanks for the,,,,,,sandwich u said??? i liked meeting u!!! let’s see each other again!!”
  • and u get up and lean over a bit so u can be closer to hear him
  • when hoseok takes off his earring and outstretches his hand to u and is like “here!! so u can remember me cute human!!”
  • and with that he smiles one last time,,,,the sharp teeth don’t even bother u because u feel like that smile ,,,,,is somehow the warmest smile u have ever seen
  • and disappears into the ocean
  • and u stand there,,,,holding the shark tooth earring,,,,wondering if ull see him again,,,,,,,,,,,or if ur seriously still dreaming

GOT7 Invited To The Cookout

When they arrived, they were automatically lit just like they said they would be. you were surprised, because you thought they that would be scared to show their true colors in front of all these people.

“y/n!” they hopped out of the truck and ran over to you.

they pulled you in the center and group hugged you in front of everyone. “stop embarrassing me!” you shouted.

you backed away from them and fixed your clothes. then, you checked out each of their outfits. they looked good, so you told them which only gassed them up.

a few minutes later, everyone except yugyeom was spread out talking to your people. he was kind of shy so he decided to stick around with you.

“this is my song.” his eyes widened when a Chris brown song started to play.

“then dance. my cousins would love it if you showed their uncoordinated asses how to dance.” you started to call for your cousins to come over.

“no no no no!” he semi whispered to you and when they started to come over, he froze.

“yeah?” they said in unison.

“take him…and dance. he said this is his song and don’t y'all like this song?” you asked them.

“you know we do cuz!” one of them started dancing…off beat.

yugyeom held in his laughter and looked down at you. “you were right.” he said in korean causing the several young kids in front of you to freak.

“what did he just say?”

“he said that you all look cool.” you lied.

“alright tall asian guy, come show us what you got.” they took him away.

“alright…” you said to yourself. you scanned the huge crowd of people in your backyard until you spotted jackson and mark going into your house. you decided to quietly follow behind them and see what they were up to.

once they got to the kitchen, they stopped. “i’m so hungry. you think y/n’s got any snacks?” jackson asked mark.

“you know her fat ass has snacks!” mark nudged him and looked around until he spotted you.

“pstt.” he signaled for jackson to turn around and once he did, his jaw drooped. “you didn’t hear that did you?”

“i did.” you pretended to cry.

“oh noo…! we’re sorry.” mark ran over to you and pulled you into a hug, jackson quickly following.

“fuck off!” you pushed them off of you and covered your laughing face. “and you’re at a cookout! why the hell are y'all looking for snacks?!”

“we haven’t eaten in hours.” jackson pouted.

you shook your head and told them to follow you to your room where you hid your snacks. “don’t tell the others about this or i’ll kill you both.”

“yeah yeah yeah..” mark said with a mouth full of chips.

“i love you y/n. you keep me fed girl.” jackson bit his honey bun and pretended to wipe a fake tear.

“hey i love her to!” mark scoffed at jackson.

“there’s enough of me to go around.” you stuck out your tongue and stood up. “let’s go…the boys must be looking for us by now.”

the three of you exited the house and went back to doing random things with random people in your backyard. that is until, you saw bambam and left them for him. he was being lit with the elder people.

“what’s that? ain’t that thing the dab?” your half drunk uncle asked him.

“yes! can you do it?!” bam asked him, almost falling out of his seat.

he got up just in time to dab when the beat dropped, earning him an audience. mostly everyone except those who were tending to the grills and the women in the kitchen.

“what the hell.” jaebum said while he and jinyoung stood on each side of you.

“i know, now he’s got my whole family dabbing. shit we’re probably gonna take a family picture where everyone has to be dabbing in it now.” you face palmed yourself since what you said wasn’t a joke and most likely a fact.

you walked away from the crowd looked around for youngjae. he had greeted you when he first got here but that was the last time you saw him. you were getting a little worried until you found him.

he was at the cotton candy machine with one of your aunts that went to church everyday of the week even if it wasn’t open, singing along to a gospel song that you had no idea he knew with her.

“y/n why didn’t you tell me you had friends that could sing? his voice…is soulful.” she placed her hand on his shoulder and complimented him a thousand times on his voice. he damn sure needed them, his self esteem was so damn low.

“hello to you to a/n.” you hugged her and took a cotton candy stick from the cart. “i was just checking on you jae.”

“alright thanks for caring about me y/n, i love you.” he hugged you and kissed the top of your head.

“oohh imma tell your momma! you get down like that?” your aunt put her hand on her hip and smirked at youngjae and you.

“it’s not what it looks like..seriously. it’s always like this…with all of them cause i’m like their little sister.” you defended yourself.

“she’s right.” youngjae said while he put his hand on top of your head.

“mhmm.” she said while squinting her eyes, she wasn’t gonna believe you.

then, she pulled her phone out and turned to another gospel song. “you know this one baby?” she put the phone close to youngjae’s ear.

“yes ma'am.” he said right before he started singing the song.

it was your cue to go.

“yugy yummy!” you shouted over at the ‘tall asian guy’ who seemed to be more comfortable around your cousins than he was earlier.

he high fived every single kid which took about two minutes before coming over to you.

“yeah?” he put his hands on his hips and looked down at you.

“you’re having fun?” you asked him.

“yeah, thanks for pushing me out of my comfort zone.” he lifted one side of your hair up and let it fall which made you giggle.

“your comfort zone? what comfort zone did i push you out of?” you asked.

“you know…i like being under you.” he swayed from side to side, something he always did when he got tired of standing.

“the food is ready!” someone yelled.

you grabbed yugyeom’s hand and rushed past people to the food. “you’re that hungry?” he asked.

“no but you’ll thank me for this later.” with as many cookouts that you’ve been to, you knew that when the food was ready, you had to go. if you weren’t quick enough, something good would be gone.

after you fixed both yugyeom’s and your plate, you headed to your room where you told the others to meet you.

“y/n there was no more soda.” bambam frowned.

“yeah, seriously those people know how to drink.” jaebum shook his head.

“i’m thirsty!” jackson exclaimed.

“alright i’ll be back, and don’t touch my food.”

you went to the kitchen and took out a kool-aid packet and sugar. you grabbed a pitcher from the cabinet and did what you usually did. you were the one who made the kool-aid at dinner time cause yours was the best. hopefully, the boys would like it.

“y/n..” yugyeom’s shy voice replaced the silence.

“ye-” you paused when he wrapped his arms around your waist and pulled himself closer to you. “yugyeom…what are you doing?”

“shh.” he rested his chin on your shoulder and closed his eyes. “just continue doing what you were doing.”

you were froze, still processing what was going on. it took you about a whole minute to realize that you weren’t dreaming and that this was really happening. he wasn’t moving, the only time he moved was when he tightened his grip on you.

“you’re weird yugyeom.” you continued stirring.

“i’m weird for liking you?” he basically confessed.

“what? you like me? is this a joke? are y'all playing truth or dare or something?” you put the cap on the pitcher and wiggled out of his hold.

“no…why would i joke around and say that i like you y/n? i…really like you.” you grabbed eight plastic cups and handed yugyeom the pitcher.

“alright..since when?” you asked.

“i’m not saying all of that until you tell me how you feel about me.” he bit down on his lip, hoping that you would say that you like him too.

you took in a deep breath. now was your turn to confess. it couldn’t be too weird now…since he feels the same way.

“i like you too.” you finally said it.

yugyeom looked down and attempted to hide his broad smile. he must’ve forgotten that you were shorter than him, so you saw all of his blushing when you looked up.

“did you tell her?” you heard jinyoung ‘quietly’ ask yugyeom which made your jaw drop.

“y'all knew?” you pointed between yugyeom and you.

“i mean..y'all are fucking obvious.” mark said.

“yugyeom was literally staring at your ass the other day and you knew it but you didn’t say anything becau-”

“yeah okay anyways i brought something to drink!” you cut jackson off.

you handed everyone a cup and poured them their drinks, including yourself. you sat between yugyeom and youngjae while they chugged their drinks down..well all of them did.

“y/n tell me what this is so i can buy it and drink it for the rest of my life.” jinyoung said while he moaned into his cup.

“this is so sweet and you know i love my sugar y/n what is this?!” bambam added on to jinyoung’s question.

“it’s called kool-aid and i made it.” you said with pride.

“no you didn’t. you can’t even make a sandwich.” jaebum laughed…by himself.

“why are you like this hyung?” yugyeom asked him.

“hmm this’ll be your last time drinking it jaebum. i was gonna bring some to the dorm faithfully but you fucked it up.” you shrugged.

“fuck!” mark cursed and slammed his hand on the floor. everyone else but jaebum followed.

“okay okay im sorry. y/n please bring your sweet juices to dee dorm faithfully.” he apologized and bowed down before you.

“alright peasant.” you giggled.

the eight of you finished up your food and drinks then, headed back outside to enjoy the last hour of the cookout.

in overall the boys had fun and found their new favorite drink thanks to you. you and yugyeom started dating. and bambam is still dabbing.
