Em Reads

After being in a writing hole the last month I finally started reading regularly again.  Yay!  So, I thought I’d put together a list of what I’ve been loving.  I don’t know if this’ll be a regular thing, but here we go!

The Beginning at the End @wheresthekillswitch

This is an OFC series and it’s amazing.  It has a all the best stuff; smut, angst and witty banter.  Lee has done a brilliant job inserting the character into the storyline.  Plus the OFC is a badass and I love her.

It’s About Damn Time  @eyes-of-a-disney-princess

This fic is a dream come true!  It’s a Dean x Reader pairing and it’s got everything; a hint of angst, action and some serious smutty AMAZINGNESS.  The way Ash writes Dean is perfection.  Go now.

Bite Me @trexrambling

This is another series with a badass hunter reader.  This one is a slow burn and it’s been brilliant so far.  Jess has a way with words that I will forever strive to achieve.

Bad Blood @pinknerdpanda

I’m usually a straight up Dean girl, but this Roy/Benny x Reader series is fantastic.  Manda can describe a scene so well that I feel like I could reach out and touch it.  It’s angsty, smutty goodness and I can’t wait to read what’s next.

Lips of an Angel    @sis-tafics

I’m a fluffy bunny by nature.  I cry watching commercials, ok?  But Jill’s angst is so perfectly bittersweet that I just can’t get enough.  This series is slowly building and I’m loving every moment.

Kill Zone  @thing-you-do-with-that-thing

The is an AU series with a Sniper/Ranger Dean and FBI reader.  I may be a little too obsessed with this series.  It’s got everything I love badass reader (noticing a theme yet people?), grumpy Dean, mystery and smut.  I live for the updates on this one.

The Arrangement  @ravengirl94

I was late to the party on this one, but oh my god I am so glad I found it!  I kinda want to live as this reader in this AU forever.  It is so well written and thought out.  Emily does an amazing job of keeping Dean, Dean while still creating this entirely new world.

Stripped  @dancingalone21

I’m a DEAN girl, but I’ve been reading more and more Jensen fics and this one has me all kinds of excited.  It’s an AU with Rockstar!Jensen and PR Reader.  I love the setup and the take-no-shit reader.  I can’t wait to see where this one goes.

Pretty Bird  @yourewelcomeforbeingmyfriend

Sarah is an author I just discovered and this fic was beautifully written.  It’s a sweet and heartbreaking sister!winchester story.  Go check her out.

Hunting Ground  @luci-in-trenchcoats

This is another AU with a suspect!Dean and cop!reader.  I only just started this one but I LOVE the reader already and the mystery and I can’t wait to find out what happens.

This is a new thing for me to put together so let me know how you like it!  And go read all of these fantastic stories!

"Insignia” is up!

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06ZYQCWQ6

I can honestly say that natural childbirth was easier than this project.

It’s FREE on Kindle devices (yay, free) and it should be free on other devices through the end of Sunday. Otherwise, it’s 99 cents. I’d love it if you’d leave a review. : ) I’ll be announcing some promotional stuff next week so stay tuned!

One of the things I’m most proud of about “Insignia” - besides getting through the love scenes without pulling my hair out - is the diversity of characters. I hope you can appreciate that, too.

OH! And I’ve got a shout-out to my Tumblr family in the acknowledgements. :) Seriously, thanks for all the love and support.

OK, here are a few tips if you ever decide to self publish:

GO FOR IT. Don’t let anyone tell you it’s not a “real book” because you decided to self pub. And if you also want to pursue traditional publishing, give that a shot, too. Heck, try both. There are no hard and fast rules for making your dreams come true. Just put in the work.

FORMATTING IS HELL. If you’re formatting your work yourself, allow plenty of time for this. It takes some time to get the hang of it.

EDITING IS HELL. If you’re editing your work yourself, allow plenty of time for this, too. Take at least a few days’ break from it, if you can. You will learn a lot from editing but your eyes will glaze over if you don’t walk away from it for a little while.

TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF. Click here for specifics.

@everyjourneylove @kategorically-challenged

At university, I did English language with linguistic for my Bachelor of Arts, which was a three year course. Half split between English language and half split between linguistics, which is the science of language. It was quite scientific and it was very hard. I liked to think while I was doing my A-levels that I was quite good at work and exams and stuff like that. But doing linguistics was kind of like throwing me into the deep end because it was a completely new concept to me and there was so many different parts of it. I was good at some parts of it, I was good at the child language acquisition thing and also things with essays but there was a lot of science based analysing language using the IPA chart  and stuff like that and that was hard. And also I think I could have tried harder in my lectures. If I had been going back, I would have listened a bit more because I had a lot of late nights and then didn’t listen the next day, which is not the point. But anyway, I passed it! I got a degree. Yay! And then I went on, because I really loved York and I didn’t feel ready to leave it yet and then I was also really interested in video editing. I was making YouTube videos from my university room and I just wanted to get better at the whole filmmaking thing because it was a big interest of mine. So I did a MA in post-production with visual effects. And there was only eight people allowed on the course so it was quite a selective course. But I went for the interview and got on it! And was invited on it and they had a huge green screen set, loads of amazing editing suites that we were allowed to use whenever we wanted, and it seemed like such a cool thing and I went for it and I did it. And I made some things I was really proud of as well and I got to work with other creative people, which is rare to have people that are sharing your interests in that way. So I had a really good time and I’m glad I did it. And I know I don’t make films on my YouTube channel, they're just like YouTube videos but I like to know that I can edit things in a way that I fully understand the software and I know what I’m doing. You know what I mean? I could just be going ‘I don’t know what this mean?’ but I understand it which is good. So I did that.

@amazingphil during his live show on the 16th of March 2017

I think some people might forget about Phil’s time at university but I always feel so uplifted and happy whenever he talk about it, so I wanted to write this down for me to keep to look back on whenever I’m struggling at university.

random college tips

i. get to your classroom early if you don’t have a class beforehand

not only are you guaranteed the best seat in the house, but there’s something about being in a classroom or lecture hall that makes you feel productive and focused. bring a book or writing assignment for a different class with you and just Do It

ii. pack your bag the night before

especially if you have early morning classes and are not a morning person. this will help you have a less stressful morning and will help you make sure you have everything you need for the day prior to leaving your dorm

iii. don’t overannotate

annotations are designed to help you identify the most important parts of the book/novel, meaning important themes, character development, big events, the implications of said events, etc. by over highlighting and over annotating i can guarantee you you aren’t doing yourself a favor !!! i’m gonna make a post later about how i annotate so be on the lookout

iv. stay on top of your readings

seriously. it is a pain in the ass trying to catch up on a week’s worth of reading in five different classes. it is stressful, it’s time consuming, and it’s exhausting. even if you’ve had a long day and you’re not in the mood to read an entire 20 page chapter in your american government textbook, just do it !!! your brain and your mental health will thank you the next day

v. try your hardest not to miss class

i’m mentally ill and prone to sickness, so i understand that sometimes it’s hard. it also feels worse when you miss class and have no idea what’s happening, so if you think you can get out of bed, lets get to class so we don’t fall behind and get extra stress thrown on top of us!

vi. fridays are homework days

think of it this way: if fridays are homework days, saturday and sunday are free days !!!!

vii. proofread your papers before you turn them in

guys i literally never do this (i know i’m a bad egg) and im always suffering for it. if your college/university has a writing center/something similar please go there, especially your freshman year !!! they will help you learn how to accurately and succinctly convey your thoughts on a college level and you will be so grateful later on i hate myself

viii. ask if the professor prefers a certain citation style

if you dont get a chance to ask during the class/lecture, send them an email. i once got my grade halved because i didnt use APA when the professor didnt specify on the syllabus/assignment sheet. so do urself and ur gpa a favor and ask

ix. always bring extra pens/pencils to class with you

somebody will forget theirs and they will sit next to you and if ur in a class with 30+ ppl that has group projects or presentations coming up you’re going to want friends

x. college kids love gum

if u bring gum you got all the friends in the world my guy i dont know why this is a thing but it is. one girl cried during exam week last year because i gave her a piece of my gum and that was literally the highlight of her week

ok thats my random ass list of stuff regarding college !! i’ll probably make more masterposts like this b/c this was fun as heck. if u have any questions/need advice, just hmu !! you can check out my other masterposts here.

"I wonder what I said..."

Okay, so, my rogue recently bought an ice short sword. Whilst in a battle, though, she stabbed a fire-being thing, which negated both the power of the monster and my sword. So, Minster shatters. Yay! Sword shatters. Not yay.

Me: “Well that was a waste of gold.”
“DM: “The hilt is still getting really, really cold in your hand.”
Me: “Huh, I should probably put it down.”
DM: “It’s starting to burn your hand with cold, so maybe.”

So she puts down the hilt, and the little gem in it starts to crack and shatter and out pops a tiny ice elemental, which we ended up giving water and stuff to grow it to a bigger size while trying to talk to it.

The necromancer tries to use an ice spell to make friends.

Me: “Are you trying to steal the elemental?!”
Necro: “Yeah, kinda.”
Me: “I paid for that sword, if that elemental is going to make friends with anyone, it’ll be me!”
Necro: “Awww, but-”
ME: “You have your zombies, now go away!”

Everyone else gives up on communication with it, but I paid for that fuckin’ sword, I’m not giving up yet.

DM: “The elemental continues to look at you, making gust sounds and whistling.”
Me: “Uh, I’ll start whistling back! Let’s hope I don’t accidentally offend it.”
DM: “Roll bluff.”
Me: “21”
DM: “It makes a high pitched whistle at you and begins moving forward.”
Me: “Lets see how this one backfires. I whistle some more. I probably insulted its mother by accident or something.”
DM: It gets to you and touches the base of your pants, melts and the water begins traveling up your body.“
Me: "UM, Ice elemental I am flattered but taken! Oh fuck did I seduce the elemental? My girlfriend is gonna be so pissed.”

DM:“It goes up your body to your chain shirt, and freezes again, giving you another point of armor and a resistance to cold.”

Me: “Oh. That’s cool! Now I can make ice puns.”
Everyone Else: “Oh shit, no, not more puns.”

And I’m guessing I’ll never find out what was said in that conversation with the ice elemental.

i hadnt drawn these 3 together so i had to change that !!

Happy Anniversary Everybody!

Can you believe it?  Me neither…it’s already been a year since me and Dipper’s amazing summer ended in Gravity Falls.

I could write a bajillion books filled with all the nostalgia and fun memories I’ve been thinking about over the past year (I’ve already started on my first trilogy!), but even that wouldn’t be enough to cover all the incredible things I feel when I think back on all our time back in that crazy town.

And I’ll admit, one of those things I feel is sadness!  There’s a lot of stuff that Dipper and I miss, and I’m sure all of you guys miss it too!  But the good news is that Gravity Falls isn’t going anywhere (unless a giant space monster comes outta nowhere and sucks it up or something), and I wanna give a big shout out to those of you still sticking around for the ride!

And just in case you don’t believe me, here’s a bunch of big awesome stuff just around the corner!

First of all, Dipper and I found this crazy cursed coloring book a few weeks ago, and now we’re gonna share it with you this July! (Sorry it’s taking so long to come out, Grunkle Ford wanted to make sure we cleared all the magic dust stuff off of it so, y’know, you don’t get cursed too.  Dipper says it’s not too fun.)

But yeah!  July 18 this thing goes up on the shelves, but you can totally pre-order it now if you want!  Yay pre-ordering!

Second, today is the last day in the history of ever that you can get your exclusive Gravity Falling merchandise!  Whether you want us all on a shirt, a mug, or a big giant cozy blanket to hide from that space monster eating Gravity Falls that I talked about earlier, it’s all available until 3 AM EST/12 AM PST tonight!  After that, it’s gone for good!!!

So hurry!  Right now!  Immediately!  Pronto!  Tick-tock! Other word that means fast!  Get it while you can!

And last of all, get ready for more fun, adventure, and epic Soos beatboxing from The Mystery Shack askblog itself! (Seriously, Soos says he plans to type out an entire answer in beatbox language one day.)

We’ve got lots of fun stuff around the corner, and wanna give a special shout-out to all our followers for being so patient while we get it ready.  Stay tuned, you lovely set of amigos!

And for now, that’s all until next time.  It’s been one heck of a year full of changes, but one thing hasn’t changed: We still love Gravity Falls as much as you do.

See you soon!

~Mabel

Endy: …. (mischief senses tingling) …………………. Okay yes?
Serenity: AND THEN!!! VeeandKunzitewillhavetocometoosoletspretendtobesebastianfromTheLittleMermaidandsingtothemit’sgonnabegreat!!!!!!
Endy: But “Don’t be shy go on and kiss the girl” doesn’t really work here.

YA Was Better In The Old Days

There are times when I really feel that modern girls are being ripped off in their YA. I grew up reading old WWII era Stories for Girls inherited from my grandmother and mother and let me tell you, restrictive gender roles and all, they let girls do more stuff than most of the current crop. And a lot of them were written around Girls Finding Their Calling rather than Girls Finding Their True Love.

For example:

In ‘A Friend for Frances’, Frances has to deal with the realities of being from a poor farming family and convince her parents to spend extra money on letting her go to a good school. She succeeds! She finds a best friend, learns about working hard to achieve your dreams, and ends the book a) all set to pursue her dream of gardening as a career and b) going to Holland to see the tulips because flowers are kind of her life. The only dudes involved in the story are her father, her brother, her best friend’s semi-present father and the Curmudgeon With A Heart Of Gold who gives her an after-school job.

In ‘Nancy Calls The Tune’, Nancy is a gifted musician and trained organist who takes a job in a church to free up the male organist to enlist and Do His Duty. Nancy and her housemate get jobs, work hard, Nancy helps maintain morale for the whole village and meets a nice man who respects her work-ethic and the housemate coerces a pilot into taking her over the channel to rescue her sister who is trapped Behind Enemy Lines. Some of the Patriotic Yay War Boo Cowardice stuff is pretty on the nose, but it still had a lot of Girls Doing Things.

In the entirety of the Swallows and Amazons series the girls were absolutely as competent as the boys when it came to sailing, exploring, and Making Up Cool Shit, and significantly more competent in the areas of cooking, supervising younger siblings, and making fires that wouldn’t go right out. It’s stated repeatedly in text that Susan, the ‘domestic one’, is the only reason they’re allowed to do most of it because she’s the one the parents can count on to make sure that Meals, Bedtime And Basic First Aid are applied at appropriate times. The assorted parents make it very clear to all the kids that John and Nancy may be the ships’ captains but SUSAN IS IN CHARGE IF YOU DISOBEY HER YOU WILL NEVER CAMP AGAIN.

‘The Daring Of Daryl’ features Daryl who is just SO EXCITED TO GO TO BOARDING SCHOOL THAT SHE RIDES A TRAINED BULL TO THE STATION RATHER THAN MISS THE TRAIN. An actual bull. Usual school story hijinks ensue, but I remember the book fondly to this day for Daryl’s almost Australian eagerness to embrace personal danger and sports. Again, very few dudes.

It’s a bit older, but ‘Rilla of Ingleside’ is to this day one of the only WWI novels not only centered around almost exclusively female characters, but about girls who were at home, trying to cope with rationing and fundraising and answering the phone when any call might be to inform them of a death in the family. Rilla, a slightly spoiled teenager when the story opens, pulls her socks up and grimly soldiers on throughout. She raises money, knits socks, tries to keep her parents spirits up as their sons enlist one after another, somehow holds the family together when one of her brothers dies, and - with nobody blinking an eye - at fifteen adopts a war baby whose mother has died and whose father is overseas and takes care of it until the father comes back. There is a romance, but given that he’s also at war most of the time you don’t see much of him.

‘Dragon Island’ featured three girls who were shipwrecked (if I remember right) on an island with a significant komodo dragon population. They survived and didn’t get eaten and were generally plucky and good at problem-solving. They fished, scavenged, built shelters, all the good stuff. No romance unless you shipped the girls and let me tell you I did.

And there were innumerable Girl’s Own Stories and Girl’s Annuals and Girls Own Adventures in which girls scaled cliffs, captured spies, raised money for charities, thwarted evil capitalists trying to take the family farm, rode horses, saved injured animals, learned instruments, bested bullies, befriended strangers, went to sea, hiked up mountains, found treasure, put on shows, won scholarships, helped old people, won academic prizes, put out fires, and generally MADE FRIENDS WITH GIRLS AND DID ALL THE THINGS.

And every time I pick up a modern YA there’s at least one boy mentioned on the cover and Is It True Love and I just really miss the days when plucky, independent girls named Kate or Debbie or Susan or Abigail or Samantha were allowed to wear sensible shoes and pursue wildly varying hobbies and careers and solve their own problems that did not center around boys. Boys frequently did not even intrude on the narrative except as Annoying Brothers or Helpful Stable Hands.

I grew up reading stories in which heroines were expected to be plucky, tough, resourceful, independent, good at problem solving, unafraid of hard work and good human beings. My daughter is growing up reading stories about girls who fall in love and maybe, like, do some other stuff. I do not like this trend.

TLDR: I am old people and stories for girls were better in my day because there weren’t so many dang boys in them and also girls were allowed to do more things.

anonymous asked:

Any tips on how to subtly make a (good) protagonist spiral down and become evil/the villain?

Aw yeah! I love this idea and I can’t believe I haven’t answered this sooner, sorry anon :/

It’s mostly about dropping subtle hints the whole way through, but here you go:

  • Morbid childhood. It doesn’t even have to be morbid- having a tendency to pull of dolls heads, ripping their siblings pictures up then blaming it on someone else, drawing rather graphic images, etc.
  • Make them mad. Have a person that’s making them insane.
  • Have a reoccurring incident that makes them more and more frustrated.
  • Toxic characters are key.
  • Deceitful characters. Make the protagonist oblivious as to what is happening to them.
  • Mind control, controlling actions.
  • Have a villain become friends with the protagonist and snidely dropping hints and unanswered questions that lead the character to insanity or curiosity- depending on their self awareness.
  • Just plain curiosity. Being overly interested in the dark, villain-worthy traits and not thinking twice about it.
  • Guidance from friends, siblings, family, the new kid who moved into town and is making it there goal to befriend the lead character, etc.
  • Denial of something, leading them to be rebellious.
  • Rebellion in a whole new light! Make the character rebellious and have them not understand what they’re getting themselves into.

Drop any ideas ya’ll have! I think this is a really clever thing tow rite about and I definitely need to have a go at it- not to mention get better at it… Good luck with your story though! Lots of love from Yasmine xox

anonymous asked:

How do you folks feel about the DNA tests you can do online to find out about your ancestry and such? I don't have a lot of information and was hoping to find ancestors and that kind of stuff to connect with my path. thank you!

I have a lot of feelings, actually, so bear with me.  :)

There’s a lot of value to be found in these DNA tests, including the possibility of discovering certain inherited diseases and conditions that can lead to better informed healthcare for yourself and potential children.  Socially, these DNA services can normalize phenotypal differences (”Oh hey, 43% of people have this same weird thing that I do!”) and give an individual a sense of lineage, which can be emotionally and spiritually so profound.  Yay!

There are a few risks, however: namely, confusing genetics with culture.  Having ancestry doesn’t give you a “right” to the current living culture of a group, e.g. having Cherokee ancestry doesn’t automatically “make you a Cherokee,” and this kind of confusion can result in well-meaning people stumbling into closed/initiatory religions and mucking things up if they don’t take the time to stop, talk, and listen about it.  (It’s more common than you think, unfortunately.)  At the same time, discovering that you don’t have the ancestry you thought you did doesn’t mean that you aren’t part of the culture in which you were raised and/or initiated, but it can still feel like an invalidation.  It can also unintentionally make someone who’s just starting out on a polytheistic path feel obligated to stick with just a few possible culturally-specific paths when there are so many more available. To give an actual example I encountered once: “I’m drawn to Heathenry, but because I’m Scottish and everyone wants to be of ‘Celtic blood’ I feel like I can’t be anything but a Gaelic polytheist even though I don’t feel any particular interest in it.”

Consider how different potential results might impact your practices, especially if - surprise! - they’re not what you expected.  As far as I know I’m just a mutt that’s overwhelmingly Irish and German, like most white-identified Americans, and I’m an Irish polytheist who’s lived in Ireland, visited several times, and feels a strong ancestral connection to that land.  But I also happen to have some physical features that have inspired people to ask if I’m of other ethnic descent (including US Customs officials, and in sometimes frankly racist ways).  When I thought I’d be getting one of these ancestry tests I had to seriously sit and consider how different possible outcomes would impact me spiritually.  What if it turns out that I’m Irish only in surname and not blood - would that invalidate the personal identity that was inculcated in me by an Irish American family and seriously reshaped by actually living in that land?  (Objectively, no, but it’s hard to break away from the social importance put on blood, not to mention potential revelations about the kinds of things your parents were doing around the time you were conceived.)  How much would I end up questioning my practice, and if it would really change so much, how much of my practice is based on what I expect rather than what it is?

(Side note: just to be clear, this isn’t to say that you have to be white to be Irish or Irish American, because you certainly don’t.  My particular family situation makes it possible that I can inherit an Irish surname but have no Irish genetic ancestry, so that’s the only reason I’m using it as an example.)

So much emphasis is put on blood relationship, and has been for so long, that it can be hard to separate the burdens of it from the blessings.  You are allowed to walk any open tradition regardless of your blood ancestry.  But I’d be disingenuous if I didn’t acknowledge that saying that is all well and good without addressing the fact that we still feel certain responsibilities and emotional connections when blood does get involved.

Long story short, I think ancestry tests are awesome for lots of reasons, but I think that as polytheists and pagans we should sit down with ourselves and our spirits beforehand and really consider how such knowledge might impact us.  It forces us to reflect on the nature of our relationship with our ancestors of blood and spirit as well as our cultural identity, even a diasporic one.

A/N HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY BELOVED CHILD, CHIAKI.

Games-Giving - wherein Nanami gives out games to the rest of the sdr2 kids

Somewhere in between the crammed spaces was a logical explanation as to why everyone was packed into Nanami’s already condensed cottage.

Initially, she wanted to bring her stuff with her to the lobby where it’s much more spacious but looking back at her hoards of console she knew that it would take too many trips and by then someone would have walked in and ruined the surprise for the rest. Besides, wasn’t this a surprise in its own way? Granted there’s barely enough room for them to breathe and much less to play but it would have to do. Once everyone had settled in as much as they could possibly have, Nanami started handing out the games and necessary consoles.

“Hanamura, you’re getting Cooking Mama.” She says and before he could be offended at a cheap knock-off of real cooking, she explains her choice. “I know how much you miss your mom… I know that the mama here isn’t exactly like yours, maybe. But I figured it might help with the homesickness hopefully.”

He looks at a loss for words. “This is… a wonderful choice.” And before he could get sappy, old habits kick in. “I’ll have you know that you are an exquisite choice yourself. You don’t need to flatter me with gifts if you want to spend a good time with me.”

She listens quietly, unresponsive. And then stoically turns to her next recipient. “I got you Fat Princess. It reminded me a lot of you while I was playing. It has food and strategy, I thought you’d like it… I guess.”

Twogami chuckles and it is a genuine heartfelt laughter. He’s more than happy to know that he was thought of especially by his one defining character trait. “It’s a worthy recommendation. I shall hold back my judgement until I finish it in all of its glory.”

She takes that as a sign that he likes it so she turns to meet the curious stare of a redhead. “I got you Life is Strange. It’s about this photography student but it’s less about taking photos and more of time travel I think… The protag is a girl with short hair and her freckles reminded me of you coincidentally.”

“Oh, wow that’s some… weirdly specific coincidences.” Koizumi admits it’s not quite the game she was expecting. She expected a typical point and shoot (with a camera) game but definitely not time traveling.

“Her name’s Max so I guess you both have names starting with M.” Nanami adds and then tilts her head in inquiry. “Are you okay with this? I can get you something else.”

“And miss out on time powers? I think not.” Koizumi just shakes her head. Sure, why not? It’d be a nice experience to see in someone else’s viewfinder for a change of perspective. “Besides, where else am I going to find a game that stars a girl and photography?”

She nods in agreement. Before Nanami could move on to whom she had planned for next, Saionji beats her to the punch as she unceremoniously jumps onto her. “Me! What about me? What did big sis Nanami get for me?”

She hands her the game with an excited smile. “I think you’ll like this one… Bully is an open world with the usual freedom of Rockstar games.”

“You had me at bully.” Saionji grins deviously.

Nanami shakes her head. “It’s not exactly that kind of game…”

“But I still get to do the stuff I like, right?” She smirks and breaks into childish cheer. “Yay! Thank you so much for this! I’ll play it to my heart’s content!”

She then turns to the nurse who jumps at the sudden attention. “Mikan, I got you Trauma Center. I know it’s far from the actual thing but I’m not exactly sure how… different it is.” There’s a certain genteleness in the way she hands out the game. And shyly, she asks, “Is it alright if I ask for your feedback on this?”

Mikan is still shocked from the experience of affection that it takes her a beat or two to stammer back, “T-Thank you! I’ll cherish this forever!!” She cries as she holds onto the game tightly to her chest. “You can count on me! I’ll be sure to point out all the inaccuracies.”

“Thank you, too.” Nanami then turns to the more if not the most excited member of the group. She smiles as she gestures to the whole setup behind her. “Ibuki, you get rockband… The full set.”

“Awesome! Ibuki has always wanted to play on these!” Ibuki hollers and she’s already at the drums while holding both the guitar and the bass. She looks just about ready to play all instruments at the same time. “The frets on the guitar are buttons! Kyaaah! How wild is that!”

Nanami can’t help but get carried along with Ibuki’s energy. She’s still smiling when she turns to Pekoyama. “If it’s sword slashing precision then the best I have is Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. You’ll probably appreciate the free slicing blade mode rather than the button mashing on most games… I think.”

Pekoyama gratefully accepts the gift with a bow. “This is quite thoughtful of you. Thank you. I will try my best to master the fighting style here.”

“And when you get bored of that, take a break and play this instead…” She hands her a portable console this time and when Pekoyama opens it, the game is already on and it’s absolutely adorable. “It’s Nintendogs. Now those fluffballs won’t run away from you… probably.”

“I…” Pekoyama’s speechless but that’s mostly because she’s distracted by the puppies hounding at her screen. No animal has ever approached her with such zeal that it catches her off-guard. It’s a surprise that she’s more than willing to welcome. She locks eyes with Nanami and her lips tug slightly into a sincere smile. “I will remember to return this goodwill of yours.”

It doesn’t go past Kuzuryuu who watched the whole exchange. When Nanami turned to him, he was caught unaware and so his defenses shot up. “Heh, so you’re giving away games based on what we do? Don’t tell me you got me one of those dumb trying hard yakuza themed games.”

She shook her head. “I don’t think you’ll like Yakuza that much so I suggest Mafia as a better alternative…” She innocently tilts her head. “Then maybe it’s better when you think it’s a different culture?”

“Ha! You got a lot of nerve thinking I’ll play crap like that.” He scoffs at her.

“I’m not. I think you’re more respectable than that… maybe.” She says not quite sure what she wants to mean. She gives him a different game instead. “This is Undertale. I think you’ll like the Fight or Mercy mechanics. You’ll choose well, probably.”

“Hmph, whatever.” He crosses his arms but his expression softens. She got him a game with a pacifist route and he appreciates the gesture. He murmurs, “But thanks anyways. I guess I’ll give it a try when I’ve got nothing else to do.”

“I’m sure you’ll love it… I think.” Nanami crosses the room to the other half of the class and Sonia catches her eyes first. “I was trying to find a game where the protag is a princess but it was hard so… I just went for the game with an… intense female main character. Tomb Raider’s a classic and you’re pretty hardcore like Lara Croft.”

Sonia reads through the summary at the back with sparkling eyes. “Oh, I have always wanted to go on my own expeditions without royal guards hounding me!” She claps her hands in her excitement. “I think this is just a lovely game filled with action and adventure! Thank you!”

“Ah, Gundam.” She moved on to the next person on her list. “I know you don’t like games about breeding animals since you consider them…” She squints as she tries to find the exact words that he used. “An insult to the actual gods?”

“That is correct!” Gundam agrees with a scowl. “Those are outright blasphemy! Why waste time on fakes when there are actual gods among us? If I were not such a forgiving Dark Lord then I would have rained judgement on all of those atrocities!”

“But is it okay as long as it’s not based on actual animals?” She asks with uncertainty. She didn’t want to offend Gundam but she’s not sure how well he’ll take this suggestion of hers. “Monster Rancher is a classic for your type. You get to learn about raising a whole bunch of new species that are literally out of this world… Here, look.”

Gundam inspects the game with a snarl at first but as he goes through the monsters, he finds himself more intrigued rather than disgusted. A whole new world to conquer, huh? He breaks out into raucous laughter. “Feast your eyes on these poor lost souls! The time has come for the Tanaka Kingdom to recruit yet more unearthly races! Cower in fear as our strength increases right before your eyes! Bwahaha!”

“Oi, do your delusions more quietly! Nobody cares!” Souda shouts but it falls onto deaf ears since Gundam is already absorbed in raising his first monster. He doesn’t want to accept being ignored but then he remembers that he hasn’t gotten his game yet and so he turns to Nanami with expectant eyes. “Man, looks like everyone’s getting good picks. So what do I get? Is it cool? It’s definitely cooler than dork lord’s over there, right?”

Nanami’s smile is playful. This one was trickier to find but it was an achievement to finally get it. She pulls out a box and brings out its contents. There’s the game and console and… a mini-robot. “Meet R.O.B., he’s your partner for playing Gyromite.”

“This is…” He gapes over the robot and his hands roam over across the plastic, he’s already picking it apart in his mind and deciphering how it works. He expected a game but he did not expect it to come with its own mini-robot. His eyes are shining and he almost looks in love. “This is fricking sweet.”

Even Nanami thought it was cool and she’s sure that Souda thinks of it a tenfold more. While Souda was busy mooning over his new toy, she sets up Owari’s. “I couldn’t find anything close to your ideal but… Wii Sports is close enough, maybe. As long as you strap on the remote and keep your distance, you can play boxing to your heart’s content.”

“So I basically beat people up by actually beating them up?” She shouts a battle cry and gets fired up on the spot. “Yosh! I’m game for this!”

“Nidai, I got you FIFA Manager among other coaching games… I couldn’t decide which one would be your favorite.” She adds that last part shyly but he takes them with a smile as always.

“I’m the best at managing my players! I’ll even be the best in these games of yours!” Nidai lets out a hearty laugh. “I’d watch out for your highscore if I were you.”

“I’ll take that as a challenge.” She then turns to the last two of her list.

Komaeda is already wearing his trademark lopsided smile and is eager to see what new hope would be born out of this. “I’m grateful that you would even consider giving me a game- the embodiment of your hope- when I’m trash undeserving of such greatness. I feel bad that you bothered thinking about me when I’m worthless.”

Nanami lets out a sigh and her hands are on Komaeda’s face in a heartbeat. “Stop talking like that or you won’t get yours.”

“But I don’t-”

“Stop.” She puffs her cheeks while she pinches his.

“Ow! Okay, okay. I concede.” He chuckles and even raises his hands in a show of defeat. “I’m still new to this whole thing about people thinking I’m worth more than I really am.”

She stares at him for a long time, judgingly, taking his words into careful consideration. She huffs again and releases him. “Close enough.”

“Well you do inspire me to try, you know.” He smiles and there’s laughter dancing on his lips. “The truth is I’ve never been this excited in my life! Oh, aside from that time I received my acceptance letter to Hope’s Peak Academy that is.”

Somehow he always brings back the conversation to hope. She shakes her head and there’s a small smile forming. “Here. Try this.”

He takes the phone in his hand with the camera on and it surprises him slightly when something else appears on the screen. “Uh, Nanami? Is there supposed to be a creature here?”

Her hand quickly swipes the phone out from his grip and her face practically beams. “A Lapras! As expected from Komaeda’s luck!” She flicks her finger a few times and by the fifth pokeball, she catches it with a triumphant smile. “I’ve been looking everywhere for her. Thanks for helping me out.”

“No problem.” He chuckles and then inquires, “So I’m guessing that wasn’t actually my game.”

She smiles shyly and then hands him his true gift. “That’s Legend of Mana and it’s legendary for its unique luck system. Almost the whole game is rigged on luck… I think.”

“I see. Then it is fitting for me.” He smiles broadly. “As expected from the ultimate gamer. Instead of bringing me the usual games, you hand me an excellent rpg. I will not let you down and maximize my luck just as much as your hope inspires me!”

“As long as you have fun.” She giggles and there’s a cough behind her. When she turns around, she sees the only person who has yet received a game from her. She smiles wider. “Hello there, Hinata.”

“Uh, hi.” He flushes and then straightens himself after a shaky breath. He fidgets from being too tense for his own good. He’s nervous even though he has no reason to be. He looks like the only person who’s afraid of what he’s about to get. “I know I don’t have any talent and all… so I’m sure you had a hard time finding a game for me.”

“Oh, not really.” She objects readily and she makes sure that her voice comes out as reassuring as possible. She finds his worries odd especially when there’s no trouble at all. “Actually… I picked out yours first.”

“What?” He shoots her a look of confusion. And when he holds the game in his hands, he feels absolutely lost. “Danganronpa…?”

“I feel like it’s life-and-death important for you to be good at this.” Nanami says in a tone that’s too serious to be talking about just games. And then in the next moment, she’s back to her laidback self. “By the way, it’s a series and I’ve already finished the latest one: New Danganronpa V3 or ndrv3 for short.”

“Um…” He’s still staring at the game and trying hard to read its hidden meaning but he comes up with nothing. He feels that there’s a joke somewhere in there that he’s missing. “Wait, so how did you end up picking this out for me?”

“Just an important feeling… probably.” She casually shrugs. There’s something cryptic underneath her words but he doesn’t have the code to decipher them and so he just loads the game with skepticism and caution. She nods at him approvingly. “When you’re done with that one, I’ll lend you the second one. I’m sure you’ll find the sequel more… interesting, I think.”

Nanami pulls out her own portable console and continues the minigame she left off. Every now and then she looks up to check on her classmates if they needed any help but they’re too engrossed with their own games, some more loudly than others. Playing games with everyone here is different from her usual peaceful solitude but it’s a good kind of different. It’s nice, she thinks.

And in this crammed cottage of Nanami’s where everyone is busy having fun, she thinks that everything is as it should be.
