Coffee catch up - April 2017

So this is my friend Ella and her gorgeous dog Lola. We went for a final goodbye coffee the other morning in this beautiful nursery in Richmond. I met Ella through @agirlnamedally actually, and she was my very first friend in London. I have never met such a warm and welcoming person. She was so positive, kind and packed with interesting thoughts about the world, life and just everyday life. If you guys aren’t aware of who she is I would highly recommend you follow her on the grams @ellagracedenton. She just released some amazing music and has loads more in store.
I’m very thankful for the time we got to spend together, and I’m sure our paths will cross again, I hope so anyways and I’m glad I have this picture of the two of them as a cool memory :)

Yet another weekend wrap up!

Another laid-back weekend, I have a lady friend coming to stay with me later this week since my next two weekend are a bit more hectic. I have a uni friend flying to stay with me later this week, we met when she was a foreign exchange student and she’s from Pakistan. The French consulate apparently put her through extra loops so I got us tickets to watch PSG vs Nice as a surprise treat while she is here. Then I’m in London & Birmingham the following weekend.

I was doing 12 hour work days last week so I was exhausted by Friday & I was in bed by 11pm like the whiny toddler I am.

I did cook myself a nice dinner, eggplant Parma & asparagus risotto. I actually enjoy cooking, it’s something I’ve been neglecting over the last year. I have been eating a lot healthier, but I make the same fast & easy meals very week. I never realized I miss trying new recipes so something I’m going to try to do more regularly.

Saturday was a lot of errands, I’ve been on a mission to find some knickknack organizers (makeup, jewelry, etc) that was unsuccessful. However, I discovered Tiger (Cheap Danish store) Fly (French IKEA). I also ate dinner at an Australian bar with an excellent view & tried the flat ice cream, which was nothing special.

I met two American rugby players at the pub where I was watching a band, they we’re both great fun. We hung out for the rest of the night & grabbed late night pizza, which seems to be the culprit of my bedridden Sunday.

Food poisoning, so much food poisoning. Its been a long time since I’ve felt this miserable, but I almost feel human. I’m just starting to feel human again so I’m doing some late night chores, I spent most of my day binging on Peaky Blinders for the first time. We should all take a moment to admire the bone structure of Cillian Murphy.

It’s just a small detail I notice, but when the ending plays, we know this scene comes out first, following it by them washing each other’s hair. And it made me think, this sequence is actually pretty important.

Because, you see, at first, Victor’s the one reaching out for Yuuri. It’s like he caught him by surprise.

Meaning Victor’s the first one who started playing with Yuuri′s hair and tried to fool around while on the showers. But what I find endearing is the fact Yuuri follows along, since the next scene we’ve got is this… He reaches out for Victor, too.

Now they are both fooling around, and this has Yuuri smiling like a little kid; Victor acting like a two year old, without caring who sees, trying to make him laugh and enjoy such a simple moment. And I adore how Yuuri wants to make the other laugh too, wants to see him smile, and so he is not staying behind… but decides to play along Victor’s silly games, and I love every part of it.

Someone: Why are you still into that fandom when you don’t like that show anymore? - Me: Have a seat, this may take a while...

This is all from a fandom that had our ship for 2 years. #LookWhatWe’veDone

Lexa was the one for her.” “Lexa was her soulmate.” “Lexa was the love of her life.” “Clarke will never love anyone the way she loved Lexa.” “Clarke will always be grieving Lexa.” - Eliza Taylor (Clarke Griffin herself). Clexa didn’t just kiss, they didn’t hook up, they made love. Doesn’t get more canon than that :)

It’s more than a fandom, it’s the lgbtq community. Multiple full size billboards were put up, bringing attention to the “Bury your gays” trope. Unlike others who only think about themselves, we actually did something positive in the real world to benefit the lgbtq community, we helped raise over $162,500 in charity for the Trevor Project. We got the television industry to recognize their use of tropes and inspired The Lexa Pledge by showrunners to do right by their LGBT audience. We got “LGBT Fans Deserve Better” trending worldwide, staying in the top 10 for hours with over 276K tweets.

We trended worldwide 55 times in the weeks following Lexa’s death. Fans from all around the globe were devastated. “Lexa Deserved Better” spread across the world with hundreds of fans sharing their pictures from more than 200 cities and over 55 countries.

We dominate in the polls, there’s no other way to describe our 47 poll wins so far, and 7 more polls we’re currently leading. Did I mention we only had our ship for a total of 15 episodes, plus the fact that alot of these polls were won with “half our ship dead” as haters like to point out… just shows how powerful Clexakru is because we continue to win even with fandoms teaming up against us Lol It’s been nearly a full year since Lexa died and we’re still winning polls :D

Me: Okay Google, what is “extra”? - Google: The Clexa Fandom.

Yes, we legit made up an entirely new character, Elyza Lex, and ship her with Alycia’s character on Fear, Alicia Clark, to make our spinoff ship Lexark and dubbed the show “Queer the Walking Dead”. Working with the Clexa material we got in the short time span, we built an empire on fanfics, fanart, comics, etc, created by some of the most talented fans. Plus all of the character social media accounts, if you’re not following @confusedlexa on Twitter you are seriously missing out :D Meanwhile we made Jason Rottenassberg’s follower count drop faster than The Loo ratings. The outrage at The Loo isn’t just limited to our fandom, it’s shown by the many articles written labeling The Loo as one of the worst shows of 2016. It’s days before the season premier and the public is still dragging the show, it’s won polls for Biggest Disappointment”, “Show You Gave Up On”, and more… talk about karma ;) Eliza’s openly asked fans for Clexa fic recs and admitted that her mother has a Lexark picture in her home. We really couldn’t have a more dedicated Captain of the Bitanic, a year later she’s still the biggest Clexa shipper <3 As if that wasn’t enough, how many characters have such an iconic look that they got their own SnapChat filter and Sims makeup? And to top it all off, we have a star, a real star in the sky!

With just 2 brief mentions, we made Costia into more than just a name, we brought her to life, unofficially decided to cast Nathalie Emmanuel for the role, and headcanon Lexa’s first love as a beautiful sapphic woman of color

We have Elycia, Eliza & Alycia, BFF’s in real life. Without them, we wouldn’t have Clexa. Alycia’s moved on to a better show, like many other cast members have done. Eliza will move on to bigger and better things as well when The Loo gets cancelled and she’ll finally be free from all the … “shit” ;)

Clarke Griffin, Wanheda, The Ambassador of the 13th clan, Klark kom Skaikru, Fleimkepa, Leader of the ungrateful sky brats <3 “You bring them justice.” “I know you’re just trying to help.” - Lexa to Clarke“Clarke elevates herself… she’s special.” - Lexa to Titus about Clarke. Lexa was the only person who never berated, belittled, or blamed Clarke.

Lexa, Heda, The Commander of the 12 clans, Leksa kom Trikru, Soulmate of Clarke Griffin, also known as Alexandria Woods in fanfics <3 “I want you!”, “I love you.”- Clarke to Lexa. “We loved her.”- Aden to Clarke about Lexa. The girl who was taught “love is weakness”, was loved by many.

*Those great Clarke and Lexa gifs were made by @amgirl01

This is just too amazing not to include, check out @miselizasjane Grounders trailer. Things like that are why I’m so into this fandom and always will beI have other wlw ships, some of them I really love and have shipped for years, some more recently. But none of them mean more to me than Clexa, I’ll always be Clexakru, because it’s about so much more than just a ship or a show.

  • Pete: Hi

I wanna make sure everyone thinks that guys are beautiful." I'm good so far yeah. yeah I do. SHUT THE FUCK. oh fuck, alright alright. Pete was like "oh my god, I'm so embarrassed about this dick pic." and then I saw the dick pic and was like "ah it's not bad." it's not a bad dick. let's be real. we made Rollins Stones one issue before Fall Out Boy. and Fall Out Boy made the issue right after us and they were so pissed they were like "yo, fuck you guys!" they're like "yo! Well, I got to tell you, man. I never thought, when we played that one on one game, that I’d end up back here, feeling like this. Like I’m going to miss you. You’ve got to do what you feel. I actually wish you weren’t going to leave. Because you’re one hell of a basketball player. And because you’re my brother.

Happy Birthday Rihanna!!

Some of you already know, but Rih was actually the first celebrity to show my work love! She saw my sketches on Twitter back in 2010 & i’ll always remember the feeling when she followed me & dm’d me… “Yo dude! I’ve been seeing some of ur designs! Ur sick wit it!” ❤ Many ongoing & surreal convos later…next thing, she had my work as her Twitter profile picture, and in 2011, she invited me to one of her LDN Loud tour dates where we finally got to meet each other. She even told me to bring my work. Her loving embrace was like we had known each other for years! She is truly a beautiful, humble & genuine soul! This is a long ass caption, but I wanted to share what a cool person she is. I’ll always be grateful for her support & can’t wait for us to collaborate one day! Keep continuing to kill it & enjoy your Birthday Rihanna, you deserve all the blessings ❤❤❤

So like, a few years ago, I was on this holiday in Wales.

And it was pretty nice, my family go there a lot, we stay in a caravan or sometimes like a little bed and breakfast and we just relax and have a nice time, like a week off from everything.

But this one year we were looking through this rack of leaflets about tourist destinations and we found this zoo, Folly Farm, which is really nice and you can see it at folly-farm.co.uk.

And they had orangutans at the time, but they don’t any more, as you can see on the list of animals they have on their website. My brother likes orangutans a LOT.

So we thought yeah great let’s take a trip to see some animals because the only other zoo any of us have been to is the one in Chester which is fine but we’ve seen it all, we wanna see some new fresh animal friends.

The way there was fun, we took a coach with lots of Welsh families on a day trip and we made a few friends and we still keep in contact with the driver.

Then we got there and that’s when the problems started. My little brother, who was eleven at the time, ran off by himself almost immediately. We couldn’t find him and so we had to split up to search multiple directions like we were in scooby doo or something.

After a couple of minutes, I found him by the orangutans. But he wasn’t just looking at him. He was fucking IN THERE with them, just chilling. I didn’t want to get him in trouble by calling an attendant so I just had to go in there myself and try to get him out. I say try because it was almost impossible. According to him, the orangutans were his friends, and they didn’t like the zoo, and they just wanted to go on a day out themselves. I asked what the fuck he was talking about but before I could drag him out of the enclosure he had run away with one of the orangutans.

I gave chase, of course, but they were incredibly fast. He barreled through the entire zoo with the orangutan in tow, and made it all the way back to the coach. He dived on, and shouted at the driver to GO, GO, GO.

In all my life I’ve never seen something so ridiculous. The moment the driver actually listened, and pulled away, actually driving down the fucking road with a kid and an orangutan just because he was told to and I guess he thought he was being helpful- that was the silliest fucking thing I’ve ever seen.

Thankfully, my stepdad saw it too, and a zoo employee ran over, red faced and panting and panicking. We got in the employee’s car and followed the coach. We wanted to call the police to help but none of us could get phone signal because, like, idk, large swathes of south Wales exist in a different era or dimension of time I guess.

We followed the coach for four hours. Across practically the entirety of Wales. All the way from Pembrokeshire to fucking Rhyl. From the south coast to the north. Honestly, if we’d just kept going it wouldn’t have taken us much longer to get home to Liverpool. We travelled so fucking far in chase of this orangutan, my brother and a recklessly helpful coach driver and every moment of the journey is burned into my mind forever.

This absurd journey finally resolved itself when we got to the white rose shopping centre in Rhyl. Apparently all the zoo animals are fitted with a tracking chip and as we approached Rhyl the zoo had finally managed to contact the police who pulled the coach over and sorted out the whole situation.

We weren’t even angry. Honestly, seeing my little brother again after all that time just made me laugh. We all did. Except the orangutan because I don’t think orangutans can laugh.

But, anyway, the resolution of the story is that folly farm can’t keep orangutans any more because of the lack of security around their enclosure. Nobody got in any legal trouble because the situation was so absurd nobody knew what to do. We left Wales together, and we reminisce on the story at least once a year. I’m just glad we left our mark, even if our legacy is totally bizarre and unbelievable.

Because the zoo, the police in North Wales and practically all of Pembrokeshire have a name for my brother and the coach driver now. A fitting nickname, one that truly captures the essence of what they did, and what they’ll always be remembered for.

They’re known as the Ape-Rhyl Fools.

You were finally going to do it. After a year of contemplating, you had found the perfect tattoo to go under your collarbone. That was step one, you spent another month looking up all the tattoo parlors in the neighborhood and ultimately choosing one that had good reviews and modest prices. Today was your appointment and as you left your front door and entered the summer heat, you could feel the urge to chicken out clawing at the back of your mind.

No.

This has been put off for far too long. It was now or never. So you took a deep breath and continued the trek to the bus. 20 minutes later you found yourself outside the parlor, 5 minutes earlier than the time you set with the man on the phone. You stared at the door as if it was going to open and pull you in itself but, you had to make the move. With the last burst of confidence you had, you swung open the door and stepped inside. Waiting there to greet you was a man with medium brown hair and dark green eyes, his tank top left little to the imagination as your eyes were instantly pulled to his many tattoos over his arms and shoulders, stopping right at his neck. He glanced up as the doorbell rang, giving you a small smile as you made your way over.

This is Shigeru Mizuki

He was born March 8 1922 and passed away November 30 2015 at age 93.

Mizuki-san was a manga-ka and historian, most famous for his Kitaro manga, Which he started publishing in 1960.

I could give a textbook account of him and everything he’s done and his influence on Japanese culture and revival of the interest in Yokai in Japan as a whole, but I just want to point out some very small things about him;

The first is, unlike a lot of Manga-ka of the 60s, Mizuki did not learn to draw Manga from Tezuka’s school…. or any school at all. He was one of those weird ‘natural talents’ you always hear about but actual examples of are hard to find. Mizuki was one such person. He just inately knew how to draw. And as a result, despite influences from other manga at the time, his characters generally don’t resemble what we think of when we think of ‘60s manga’

Not to mention that, despite his preferred art style, he was diverse in what he could do with how he drew, easily going from his more cartoony drawings to a more realistic style, sometimes doing both at once.

Mizuki-san was drafted into the Japanese Imperial Army during WWII, and during the war contracted malaria and lost his left arm during an explosion.

He was left-handed.

However, despite disease, losing his drawing-hand, being the only surviving member of his unit and literally being ‘ordered to die’ by his superiors, Mizuki survived the war and taught himself to draw with his right hand and just kept going.

His manga that he’s famous for were all done after he lost his dominant arm.

All his manga have a personal autobiographical touch to them. Whether it’s “Showa” which is literally a historical account of what Japan was like from the 20s to the 80s, to Kitaro, which is about the stories of Yokai told to him by his elderly neighbour, all his manga have something personal about them.

He is a cultural icon in Japan for keeping traditional ghost stories and creatures alive in the modern consciousness, as well as his contributions to Japanese history regarding WWII. He traveled the world, gathering ghost stories and traditional folklore from other countries as well.

He’s been awarded a string of awards I’m not even gonna attempt to list, although personally I feel most noteworthy is the ‘Personal of Cultural Merit’ award in 2010 and the ‘Order of the Rising Sun’ Award.

But again, that is his importance historically and culturally, whereas I find his personal struggles regarding the loss of his arm and just relearning how to draw something more personal to know as an artist.

With this in mind, He is also noteworthy for never really following the idea that most manga-ka of the time had that ‘you only need 3 hours sleep a night’ or to keep working without rest. Mizuki never really followed that belief. He got a full night’s sleep every night, and fully believed in actually LIVING life, and not just spending your entire life behind a desk, drawing.

He later joked offhandedly that at age 90 he was still around whereas everyone else of the same time period making manga had long since died.

I feel this is incredibly important to remember. Tezuka believed in working non-stop and barely sleeping. And he is undoubtedly the most important contributor to what we think of as manga today. But Mizuki-san, who is just as important to Japanese culture, believed in sleeping well, living life, and being happy. And he was ALSO important, created amazing work, and is recognized as a master.

You don’t need to work yourself to death to be an artist.

Mizuki-san had a list of ‘7 rules to happiness’, which I honestly feel is worth remembering. It may be things we’ve heard before, but this coming from a man, who went through active war, lost limbs, nearly died, retaught himself how to draw because he wasn’t able to give up, made an impact on Japanese culture, believed in living life, refused to overwork himself and lived to the age of 93, it feels like you can trust his advice. because he’s someone who’s seen some serious shit, but he was happy, and he’d learned how to be happy. And from what I’ve heard remained happy and content until he died of natural causes.

Number 1

‘Don’t try to win – Success is not the measure of life. Just do what you enjoy. Be happy.’

Number 2

‘Follow your curiosity – Do what you feel drawn towards, almost like a compulsion. What you would do without money or reward.’

Number 3

‘Pursue what you enjoy – Don’t worry if other people find you foolish. Look at all the people in the world who are eccentric—they are so happy! Follow your own path.’

Number 4

‘Believe in the power of love – Doing what you love, being with people you love. Nothing is more important.’

Number 5

‘Talent and income are unrelated – Money is not the reward of talent and hard work. Self-satisfaction is the goal. Your efforts are worthy if you do what you love.’

Number 6

‘Take it easy – Of course you need to work, but don’t overdo it! Without rest, you’ll burn yourself out.’

Number 7

‘Believe in what you cannot see – The things that mean the most are things you cannot hold in your hand.’

Imagine Sam finding your daughter talking to Sully

“I’m telling you, she’s talking to herself.”

Sam laughed as you walked back into your bedroom, a towel around you as you dried your hair.

“I’m not kidding,” you told him. “I just walked by her room on the way from the shower, she’s chatting away to herself in there. Talking through the plot of Moana.”

You allowed yourself a small laugh at that. The kid was obsessed with that movie.

“Do you want me to check on her?” he asked, and you shrugged. “Alright.”

He kissed your cheek on his way to Katie’s room.

“An’ then she was the chief an’ then they all went voyagering on the ocean,” your daughter was saying, and Sam laughed slightly until he heard an all too familiar voice respond.

“They were voyagers? For real?”

Sam pushed the door open, frowning when he saw his old imaginary friend sat on the floor with his daughter, playing with Lego.

“Sully?” he asked, confused, and the two of them looked up at him. “What- ah, what-?”

“Daddy!” Katie gasped, “You can see him?”

Sam nodded. “Yeah sweetie. Can I speak to him alone for a sec?”

I’m not sure if you’re someone who gives writing tips, if not that’s okay. I get it. But I was curious. If you’re having a dialogue where the character is ranting, the words are kinda just flying out of their mouths and it’s a lot of words, how would you format that? Like, would you put it all in one paragraph, do you interrupt it with an action (s/he said, waving wildly) or would it just be dialogue?

I do as often as I can! I get a lot of asks, so I apologize to those whose questions I don’t get to :( But I enjoy talking about how I do things/what I’ve learned! Just keep in mind that writing is an art and, like all art, there’s no one true way to do something. So everything I suggest is just that– a suggestion!

Lots of Words Rants!

So you have a character who’s saying a lot of words in a big rant!

1. Static unbroken rant. The benefit here is that the reader, generally, naturally reads this very quickly! It’s probably what you’re looking for when you say “a lot of words” and it definitely stuns both the reader and the other characters! For example:

“You want to know what I think,” she says, mouth a thin line. “Right. Okay. Well I think it’s interesting how you only look for an opinion when people owe you something. I think it’s really convenient that you wait until you can deny someone something, something like basic human rights, before crowd sourcing validation and then you think that it means shit when they don’t speak against you. I think you’re a coward and that no amount of intimidation or ass-kissing will break through the denial you’ve got going on. So if you’re looking for me to tell you that you’re a hero or that we can’t do this without you, you should wait until you actually have something on me.”

The silence is deafening as she takes another sip of her coffee, Damien’s mouth opening and closing as he tries to come up with a response. He looks around the table, hoping to see similar shock, and receives another unpleasant surprise when no one will meet his eyes.

There are two problems that I’ve had with the Big Wall of Text. One, it can lose the reader! Despite emotion or content, it’s easy to skip from the first sentence or two to the last line or two. Some readers will read it quickly, but others might skip it entirely.

Second, with no physical movements, it can be hard to get back into the scene, especially since unbroken rants w/o movement generally end in silence.

2. Active Unbroken Rant. Breaking up a rant with action keeps the reader’s attention and makes them read a little closer. It also has the benefit of giving the rant some texture by escalating or deescalating the emotion in each part or by providing emphasis.

“You want to know what I think.” She shakes her head. “Right. Okay. Well, I think it’s interesting how you only look for an opinion when people owe you something. “

Damien’s jaw tenses and she can tell that he wants to lean away from her as she stands, looming over the table, coffee forgotten. All around them, the other rebels are staring at her wide-eyed.

“I think,” she continues, biting off the ends of her words, “that it’s really convenient that you wait until you can deny someone something, something like basic human rights, before crowd sourcing validation and then–” she bares her teeth “– you think that it means shit  when they don’t speak against you.”

He doesn’t look away from her, not to the left or right where his devoted followers are, as usual, sitting uselessly. She can barely stand it.

Her words come faster now, like a flood after the damn has been broken. “I think you’re a coward and that no amount of intimidation or ass-kissing will break through the denial you’ve got going on. So if you’re looking for me to tell you that you’re a hero or that we can’t do this without you, you should wait until you actually have something on me.”

So with breaks for action/reaction, you get a scene that’s a little more urgent than the one without action. Action helps the emotion build in the rant whereas the static rant feels more like a slap in the face.

The downside here is that you have to build the tension and keep everyone’s  body language appropriate to the scene.

3. Broken Rant (active or static). So it’s a rant and you want the fast-talking character to be the star of the scene. Seems counter-intuitive to have another character talk, but it can actually help speed up the reading of the scene while also showing that this rant is dominating it. For example:

“You want to know what I think,” she says. She shakes her head. “Right. Okay. Well, I think it’s interesting how you only look for an opinion when people owe you something.”

Damien jerks like he’s been slapped. “What is that–”

“I think,” she continues, giving no indication of hearing him, “ that it’s really convenient that you wait until you can deny someone something–”

“Hey–”

“–something like basic human rights,  before crowd sourcing validation and then you think that it means shit when they don’t speak against you. I think you’re a coward and that no amount of intimidation or ass-kissing will break through the denial you’ve got going on.”

The silence rings around the table, the tension so think between her and the other rebel that no one dare move.

Eliza leans forward and picks up her coffee. “So,” she says, still staring him down, “if you’re looking for me to tell you that you’re a hero or that we can’t do this without you, you should wait until you actually have something on me.”

The little interjections from Damien, and the way I’ve broken them off, shows that things are happening very quickly. It’s a broken back and forth that both ups the tension and the speed!

Hope this helps! If you have any more questions feel free to drop by, I’ll try and get to them asap :)

HOW TO STAY MOTIVATED AS AN ENTREPRENEUR

I believe motivation is highly subjective and that each person has a unique motivational catalyst. So this post isn’t actually written to motivate you (LOL). What this post will do, however, is give you 3 distinct suggestions on how you can generally stay motivated by yourself. These are based on observations made in my brief time working with entrepreneurs. Of course, like with anything, this is not a closed list.

1. Have Passion For What You Do:

You’ve heard this plenty of times, I know, it’s annoying to me too. But we wouldn’t hear it so often if it wasn’t so important.

Steve Jobs, when addressing a crowd at his alma mater, famously said “You’ve got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers.

Do what you love, and not in an airy fairy, kumbaya kind of way. If you derive actual pleasure from what you do, you are likely to be more motivated than the average person. It follows that people who do what they love will approach their work with a guaranteed level of enthusiasm. I don’t think this needs a great deal of explanation.

2. Find A Suitable Co-Founder:

Some of the best companies in the world were started by co-founders (e.g. Apple, Microsoft, Procter & Gamble, etc.). Often, a start-up is launched and maintained through a combination of expertise, which, for complex projects, is hardly ever held by a single person. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 people to start a project. So the importance of compatible co-founders cannot be stressed enough.

Like with every endeavour, there will be challenges that dampen the passion. The honeymoon period WILL end, and co-founders need to understand their effect on each other because this can serve as the necessary spark to push each other forward. During a slump in motivation, if you don’t feel more motivated after speaking with your co-founder, he or she may not be the right person for you to work with.

Some questions you should ask about your co-founder - When you are not feeling your best will they be able to take control? Do they create a mood which is conducive to productivity? How do you feel after talking to them about a hurdle you are facing? Do they actually have the capacity to perform the tasks that are needed to drive the project forward?

To achieve the best results, be brutally honest with yourself when answering these questions. Based on your answers, you may need to make some changes.

I left the first business I started at University because I could no longer work with my co-founder. The person whom I had originally chosen as my co-founder because of his technical knowledge of the (media) industry became the reason for my loss of enthusiasm. I am not sure what the root cause was, but my co-founder started developing a habit of killing the business relationships I had worked hard to build (and other bad habits, which are best left unmentioned). In turn, our reputation as a serious business began to take a knock. But this wasn’t yet the issue. The real issue was his inability to realise his problem, and then act in accordance with such realisation.

Needless to say, I was brutally honest with myself - I just did not believe that he had the capacity to perform necessary tasks anymore, so I cut all professional ties with him.

3. Figure Out Your Motivational Currency

I define motivational currency as: a positive response which fuels the desire to be productive.

For example, I run a consulting business. Now, as much as I love what I do, there are mornings which feel completely hopeless (because - life) and my reason for continuing has escaped me. However, my mood suddenly changes when I get up from my bed, check my mail, and find an email from an entrepreneur requesting my services. After viewing this email, I feel a new energy, a sense of purpose, which prompts me to keep going. I am motivated, and the email is my motivational currency.

If you are an outdoor event organiser whose event receives good reviews on social media and in the local papers, such reviews are your motivational currency because they prompt you to repeat the amount of effort put into your work, in pursuit of the same or an even better response from your market.

This type of “currency” is different for different businesses, and is usually controlled by external factors. We cannot determine when motivational currency will be forthcoming, but the more work we put in, the more motivational currency we are likely to receive. (i.e. the more good work I do for my existing clients, the more likely I am to wake up to an email requesting my services.)

Conclusion:

Staying motivated is, in my opinion, the most important thing for any entrepreneur. You can do anything you set your mind to with the right amount of motivation. Conversely, you can do very little without it. This is why it is crucial for entrepreneurs to find what motivates them, and have ready access to it whenever it’s needed.

So print this. Put it on your wall, and highlight the points which speak to you the most. Every time you feel demotivated, give it a quick read, and remind yourself of the ways in which you can regain your motivation.

As always, thanks for reading. I promise to make it a shorter read next time.

why black paladin keith is bad writing (in which i criticise a lot of writing choices)

So if you’ve been following me for a while you’ll know how much I hate the unfortunate possibility that Keith will become Black Paladin and leader of Voltron in Shiro’s absence. And I have good reason, it’s multiple levels of bad writing. it shows really blatant writer favouritism and actually does a disservice to his character as well as those of the other main characters. I’m putting this under a readmore because its long but here we go

OKAY
I have been meaning to do this for MONTHS but hey, there’s no better time than the present so buckle up, here we go!

THESE BOOKS ARE A GODSEND.

I am ALWAYS on the lookout for writing aids that ACTUALLY HELP. If you’re like me, and occasionally venture out to buy books on, let’s say, showing vs telling - you will always get the same rehearsed speeches on what that means. -summons pretentious writer’s voice- You’ve got to shoooooow what’s happening in the scene, not teeeeeeell~~ BAH! What you NEVER get, however, is how to do it, or how do it better.

THESE BOOKS ARE THE STUFF OF DREAMS

Each of these is so freaking helpful, I can’t even convey. They all follow the same format as the pictures I’ve shown above, so you get one detailed page of descriptions followed by tons of more in-depth, thought provoking concepts.

I’ll do my best to lay out the five that I have and if you are interested, hop on over to Amazon and buy these suckers up because they are AMAZING; I have NEVER used a writing resource more than I use these.

Negative Trait Thesaurus & Positive Trait Thesaurus
-gives you a definition of said negative trait
-gives you similar flaws also found in the book
-gives you possible causes of WHY the character might have this trait
-gives you a list of other behaviors the chara might have
-gives you examples of the chara’s thought process
-gives associated emotions
-gives positive aspects of the trait, as well as negative
-gives examples of well known chara’s that have this trait
-talks about how the chara might overcome it
-gives traits that, when combined with this one, might cause conflict
How I use this information:
Chara building, or when I get stuck on what I want a character to do. Man, I just can’t decide what they WOULD do. Well, awesome, I have a little guide to help me think through the character’s possible motivations. Also, I get help building a potential backstory because I get a framework of which to think, why is the character this way?

Urban Setting Thesaurus & Rural Setting Thesaurus
-gives a whole lot of examples of sights, smells, tastes, and sounds
-gives examples of textures and sensations (ie at an ‘antique shop’ you may encounter chipped paint, distressed wood, etc)
-gives you possible sources of conflict (ie at a ‘hotel’ you might have noisy neighbors)
-gives list of people you might expect to find at said location
-gives related settings
-gives tips on this type of setting
-gives a setting description example
How I use this information: IMAGERY IMAGERY IMAGERY

Emotion Thesaurus (aka MY FAVORITE)
-gives a definition of the emotion
-gives physical signs and signals (ie chara may look pale, might fidget, etc)
-gives internal sensations (aka, blood pounding in the ears, dry throat, adrenaline rush)
-gives mental responses (ie fight or flight)
-gives cues of acute or long-term impacts of the emotion
-gives ‘may escalate to _______’ and directs you to other emotions
-gives cues of suppression (ie cues of suppressed rage)
-gives writer tips
How I use this information: I love this book so hardcore, it’s so helpful with internalizing. It’s great because I get to step outside of that box of using the same five responses to a certain emotion and start really thinking about, what can a character do instead to show that they are feeling this, rather than me using adverbs or his adrenaline pumped fifty gazillion times.

These books are all co-written by Angela Ackerman and Becca Puglisi (bless their souls) and if this sounds of interest LOOK INTO IT!! I get such buyer’s regret after buying writing guides but these are legit the best ones I have found and I reference them so, so, so much.

Hope this helps anyone out there looking for something life-changing!!

Clay Jensen One Shot

Hey it’s Clay. Clay Jensen. Don’t adjust your… whatever media you’re reading this on. It’s me, alive and ready. Ready to tell you the story of how I met [your full name]. But let’s start at the beginning, when she first walked into Liberty High. After all, every story has an origin.

Second week into school and I noticed from my locker that everyone was staring at the entrance door. I tilted my head to see what they were all staring at and there she was. Her hair was all wet which I presumed was from the rain. She didn’t acknowledge the stares as she approached Hannah’s locker. Suddenly I got a sense of déjà vu. My heart skipped a beat and my grip on my lock tightened. Well wasn’t the whole situation ironic. I caught a quick glimpse of her and I couldn’t help to think, was this revenge for everything I had done, more so hadn’t done for Hannah? Was this some kind of punishment to just remind me of my failure? I loosened my grip and took in a deep breath. I looked back and caught her staring at me. I closed my locker door and averted my eyes away from her. I wasn’t going to make the same mistake twice. Of course we had a couple of classes together, and I found out her name was [y/n], but I kept my distance. Little did I know, I was eventually going to fall into the trap.

A couple weeks had gone by, and it was raining so much that one couldn’t see where they were headed. I was riding my bike back home and found myself plugged in with my headphones. I wasn’t paying much attention to my surroundings. I couldn’t hear the loud honk of the car. It’s beaming lights blinded me causing me to hit the sidewalk and hurt myself badly. I pivoted my body to the side to cause less damage. Unfortunately, I felt warm blood slowly trickling down the right side of my head. I touched my forehead and cussed. I looked up and saw [y/n] rushing towards me. I was relieved to see she didn’t look so worried so the damage couldn’t been so bad. Even if she seemed calm, her eyes were saying something else.

                                                        ◆ ◆ ◆

Looking out the window and I just saw it happen so fast. Clay flew from his bike straight to the pavement. The moment he fell the car just drove off. Asshole. I ran out and went to see him. I bend and grabbed his shoulder.

You: “Hey are you…” *looks at his head wound* “Wow that looks bad, umm come inside, I’m sure I can find something…”

Clay: *lifts himself up* “I’m fine, I can go home.”

You: *irritated* “I’m not going to hurt you Clay. Come on, let’s go inside.”

I led him towards the front porch and though the door. I brought him upstairs to my room and told him to stay there while I fetched the first aid kit. I came back to the room and saw him awkwardly standing.

You: “You can sit you know.”

Clay: *hesitates* “Oh um yeah.”

He sat down and I wiggled myself beside him. I opened the kit to see if there would be anything useful. I opened a disinfectant pad and cleaned the trickling blood. Once I finished that, I took a second one and warned him.

You: “This is going to hurt.”

I pressed the pad on his forehead where the injury was and felt him wince, and he cursed under his breath. As I padded the wound, I finally got to look at him in his eyes. Never had I seen him stare at me so intently, and so I was intrigued.

You: *while padding down* “I can’t believe an accident is all it took to finally meet you.”

Clay: *tilts his head* “I’m not a conversationalist, or good with people.”

You: *chuckles* “That makes two of us.”

                                                   ◆ ◆ ◆

I never spoke to her, not once. Now here I was getting nursed by her, what were the odds of that? Was this the world’s twisted way of giving me karma? Would this just end as bad as the last time? I let these thoughts run all over my mind as I stared at her. I looked at her as she finished padding down. I could see why people at school made such a big fuss about her. There was no denying that she was an attractive girl. She then searched for a band-aid, and when she found one, she started undoing it.

Clay: *raises eyebrows* “You? You’re not good with people?“

You: *smiles* “I prefer no contact. Just a few exceptions.”

Clay: *grins* “I don’t believe you.”

You: *patches him up* “It’s true. And look, you’re all good. I’d still go to see someone who actually knows what they’re doing.”

Clay: “Yeah sure, sounds good.”

You: “Don’t hurt yourself again, alright?”

Clay: *gets off from bed* “Ok. Well I should probably be on my way home.”

You: *get’s up* “You can, but you’re more than welcomed to stay.”

Her voice was soothing, and I couldn’t help to hear the hopefulness in her voice. Why was she acting this way around me? I felt my cheeks warm up a little and turned my head around quickly so she wouldn’t notice.

Clay: “Um my parents will probably start worrying about me, so I’ll just head out.”

You: *as he walks away* “I’ll see you around school.”

A few weeks have passed since I was nursed by [y/n]. I thought it was a bad idea, to get close to her. But through out the weeks I stopped to care. She’d choose to sit next to me during lunch and I didn’t mind. She never tried to impose and I never pushed her away. Sometime’s we’d talk, sometimes we’d just sit in silence. I let my anxiety slip away and eventually got close to her. And then, we had finally became friends.

During lunch time, Sky sat beside me and searched the table.

Sky: “Wow your girlfriend isn’t here?”

Clay: “She is not my girlfriend.”

Sky: “But you wish she was.” I fell silent and kept eating my food, “I’m sorry, did I say something wrong?” *smirks* “Didn’t picture you the popular type Jensen.”

Clay: *sighs* “ She is not… I don’t even know why I’m having the conversation with you.”

Sky: “Why don’t you stop being such a wuss and move on.”

Clay: *looks at her* “Do you even remember the last time? What happened when I got close to Hannah?”

Sky: “Oh yeah let’s all pity Clay. Please, the world didn’t revolve around Hannah Baker. She was high school kid with a shitty life and some issues, like the rest of us. Enough of her. It’s time for you to let go. If anyone should have a not so shitty life, it’s you.”

I took in a deep breath and let her words sink in. Oh the irony.

Clay: “Are you getting sappy with me? Did you just try to comfort me?” *laughs*

Sky: *dead serious stare* “Don’t make me regret this.”

Clay: “I heard you.”

Sky: “So what are you still doing here?”

It took me a second to realize what she was insinuating. I got up before she can can physically assault me and went to look for [y/n].

                                                    ◆ ◆ ◆

The library always brought me some kind of peace where I can just manage all my thoughts. I had been invited by several people to Bryce’s party this evening. But I already had made other plans, a surprise actually. And parties weren’t really for me. I wondered though what it’d be like to go with Clay. To finally hold his hand and smile at each other like no one else was in the room. My heart fluttered to the idea but I pushed it away as I thought that would unlikely ever happen. Then I saw him come in the library, he scanned the whole room and smiled when he saw me. He approached me and pulled up a chair to sit beside me.

Clay: “Working on another assignment?”

You: *sighs* “Do they ever end?”

Clay: *smirks* “Do you need help?”

You: “I think I’ve got this, thanks.” *smiles*

I couldn’t help to see that he looked like he was trying to say something but couldn’t form the right words.

You: “Are you okay? You look a little shaken up.”

Clay: “You mean me? I’m fine.”

You: *shrugs* “Alright well did you hear Bryce is having a party tonight?”

Clay: *sarcastically* Yeah I actually heard. It’s not like the whole school knows.“

You: *grins* “Well I was invited by several people.”

Clay:  "So… does that mean you’re going?“

You: "Nah I’m not a party person, and Bryce is an ass. Besides we’ve got plans.”

Clay: *looks nervous* “Um so yeah about… *shakes his head* "Wait we have plans? I wasn’t aware.”

You: “Meet me at the Crestmont for seven. Don’t be late.” *bell rings* “Oh we should be heading to class.”

I packed up all my stuff and tried not to show my excitement as we both left the library. Later that evening I fixed myself a little and made my way to the Crestmont. I got the whole surprise ready, and waited patiently until he came.

                                                      ◆ ◆ ◆

I rode my bike to the theater. I checked my phone and it was just 6:58. I wasn’t sure what to expect, after all the theater was closed tonight for renovation. I left my bike in the back where I knew no one would try to steal it. I came back to the front and there she was. She waved as she put a strand of hair behind her ear. I smiled back, admiring her.

You: *smiles widely* “You made it.”

Clay: *sarcastically* “Actually I had made other plans, but um, I decided to come here.” *shrugs*

You: *rolls eyes playfully* “Well come inside, I’ve got a great surprise.”

I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I followed her in. We walked towards the end of the theater where there was a room being unoccupied due to the renovation. She opened the door and I couldn’t believe it. The room was unfinished, the chairs were put but there was no big screen or curtains. The surround system was already installed but the walls were bland with no light, so it would’ve been completely dark if it weren’t for the light of the projector. Also the image it produced emitted enough light to recognize my surroundings. The projector was set in front of the soon to be large screen. It displayed a menu to play the movie, Lord of the Rings. I looked around the large room and paid attention towards a couple of seats behind the projector. I saw they were being occupied by bags of popcorn and candy. I looked over at her and couldn’t help but to grin like an idiot.

Clay: *surprised* “Wow, this is–”

You: *frowns* “Please don’t say too much.”

Clay: *shakes head* “No, this is pretty cool, but Lord of the Rings? You could have picked a movie we both would have enjoyed.”

You: *shocked* “Are you kidding me? Clay, I didn’t think you out of all people would make such an assumption.”

Clay: *grins* “Well I’m sorry for not knowing you’re a bigger nerd than me.”

You: *playfully elbows his side* “Don’t push it. And for your information, I love these movies. I even got the special edition with the extra content in the film. So it’s going to be a long movie.”

The answer surprised me, and I actually felt some weird feeling in my chest. I felt my nerves kick in and feel it in my stomach. She made her way to the seats and I followed. She picked up the bag of popcorn and I held the bag of skittles. We both sat down beside each other. She pulled out two bottles of ice tea from her bag and offered me one. I grabbed it and placed it in the cup holder. I thought about it, and this whole situation seemed too good for me. With every second I tried to calm myself. I didn’t deserve all of this, and maybe this is the world setting me up for my own self destruction. Or was Sky right and maybe, just maybe I might not have such a shitty life after all.

Clay: *laughs* “You’re still a big nerd. Who would have thought.”

You: “I’m full of secrets. Now let’s enjoy the next 3 hours and 46 minutes of pure greatness.”

She pulled out the remote for the projector and pressed play.

                                                        ◆ ◆ ◆

And that’s what we did, we watched the entire film. Not one single word spoken between us, just the sharing of our snacks. I stared at him a couple of times because he finally looked comfortable. When he’d catch me staring, I’d look away embarrassed. Sometimes, I noticed he was watching me, and that made me a little nervous. At some point I felt tired and placed my head against his shoulder. I think he was taken back because at first he kind of jerked. But seconds after he relaxed.

The movie ended and I lifted my head. I took the remote and went back to the main menu of the movie. I didn’t want to turn it off because then there would be no light in the room. We had finished the popcorn, candy and the drinks so we put them together in one bag. I looked over to see his reaction and he had a neutral look.

You: “I’m sure you’ve seen this many times just like me.”

Clay: “You have no idea…” *looks up at you and looks at phone* “It’s getting late.”

You: “Yeah it is.”

There was an ongoing stare being engaged by both of us, and my heart actually started to race a little. It felt like none of us truly wanted to leave.

Clay: “Well… we can always stay. Actually I’ve got a good place we can hang.”

You: *tries not to sound too excited* “Okay well lead the way.”

I carried the trash outside the room while following him. I threw it away and I was right behind him. He took me up a flight of stairs, until he opened the door and I could feel the cold, fresh breeze hit my face. We were on the roof of the Crestmont. He then sat almost close to the ledge, in front of the building. I joined him and started looking up.

You: “Do you always come up here?”

Clay: “It’s kind of my hang out. When I’m on my lunch I always come up here. Brings me a sense of nostalgia.”

You: “Nostalgic about what?”

He looked at me and looked like he was hesitating. I didn’t want to put him in a difficult position. I guess I asked a hard question, because he started fidgeting with his hands. I didn’t want to pressure him into something he didn’t want to get into. So I put my hand over his and gave him a reassuring nod.

You: “You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to.”

He took a deep breath and started telling me the story of Hannah Baker. He cared about her; I could tell by the way he spoke about her. My heart fell while hearing everything that had happened to her. No person ever deserved that. I was able to tell Clay was the only person in her life that shed some light to the darkness she felt. Then he got to the part of the tapes, and clenched my fists of the idea Bryce raping any woman. And his friend Jeff dying, that I could tell was one of the hardest things for him. I encouraged him to keep going my giving his hand a squeeze. Then he looked down talking about his own tape. He didn’t even want to look at me. He was holding in so much guilt and shame; he didn’t think he did enough. I was almost tearing, but I gave his hand a little squeeze again when he was done.

You: “Why isn’t Bryce behind bars?”

Clay: “He’s got people covering his ass; he can basically get away with murder.”

You: “He essentially did, she deserves justice, both her and Jessica.”

Clay: *sighs* “I know but the story is a lot more complicated.”

You: “I see well I hope that son of a bitch does end up going to jail. I’m sorry about Hannah, and Jeff. They deserved better and seemed like really good people. Good to you.”

Clay: *looks at you* “Maybe, if Jessica finally realizes that she should go to the police about her rape. Honestly, sometimes I wish I could have been more involved. I wish I could have told Jeff to stay that night. I wish I could have seen that Hannah was slowly being destroyed by everyone around her. I could have helped her. She was crying for help and no one noticed.”

You: “By the sound of it, she had a lot to deal with it. And most people going through these types of issues would rather let their destruction hit them, like with Jess. And even if they wanted to get help, they don’t know how to approach people about it. So they hope someone might notice, and that person would approach them. And sadly, most of them times it’s not obvious. She made her choice. And in the end, you can’t save those who don’t want to be saved.”

Clay: *sighs* “I haven’t spoken about Hannah in a while.”

You: “It’s obvious you cared for her. And I think it’s really sweet that you have such great memories of her. Just never blame yourself for it. This wasn’t your fault.”

Clay: *looks at you* “Hannah was the first girl, well that I ever had strong feelings for. And I think that’s why it was so hard on me.”

I noticed a little tear coming out of the corner of his eye. I brought my hand to his cheek and wiped it off with my thumb.

You: “You loved her?”

He just nodded his head upon and looked down. I took my hand away from his face. It broke my heart to see him completely vulnerable. But he looked up, with some kind of determination in his face. He looked up at me and said something that surprised me.

Clay: “But I think it’s time for me to move on.”

I saw him take a quick glimpse at my lips and leaned in. I felt his soft lips against mine and my heart was slamming in my chest. I wasn’t expecting it after everything he had just told me. But it felt right, so right. I kissed him in back and wrapped my hands on the the back of his neck to bring him closer. Everything around me seemed to disappear. It was just me and him.

                                                         ◆ ◆ ◆

I swallowed my nerves and went for the kiss. She put her hands on the back of my neck and drew me closer. All my nerves were replaced by adrenaline. I could feel the heat radiate from all over my body. I slipped my hands onto her waist and gave her hips a nice squeeze. I could hear a moan escape from under her breath. My heart started beating really fast. I realized that I was slowly pushing her towards the ground. I kissed her deeper, as she eventually ended up lying on the ground. She pressed her whole body against mine and that drove me crazy. Good crazy. My right hand traced the side of her body, outlining her curves. I got a panic feeling and stopped kissing her. She looked at me confused.

Clay: “I just want to make sure this is all okay with you.”

She looked at me with wonder in her eyes. She gave me light kiss on my lips and told me to get up. I got off her and we sat down again beside each other.

You: “So do I. Listen I don’t want you to feel uncomfortable with stuff like this.”

I looked at her for second before I kissed her; a slow, passionate kiss. In that moment, all I wanted was her. It wasn’t the time, and I still felt a bit anxious since the last time I kissed a girl.

Clay: “Just give me time.”

You: *grins and jokingly says* “Don’t make me wait too long alright?”

I chuckled as I gave her a light kiss. My heart was still racing from our intense kiss from before. She moved closer and put her head on my shoulder. I wrapped my arm around her waist and smiled at her.

Clay: “In truth, I don’t actually like change, but this change seems cool.”

I saw her smile while I placed a kiss on her forehead.

That is all I’m going to write or type… you know what I mean. This story doesn’t have an ending yet, but I feel the ending to this story will be different from the last. So I guess this is goodbye, for now.

See you soon,

Request: “Jughead x plus size reader, where their relationship is a secret. In which the reader is Kevin’s sister and one time they have a heavy make out session and Kevin, Veronica, Betty and Archie just walk in on them and Betty and Veronica are losing their shit because they ship it so hard, Kevin is totally sweet but excited and already plans their future but Archie asks him why he would date someone like her? I know it’s really specific but I can’t get this idea out of my head and I’m an awful writer… (And I don’t mean to hate on Archie, I really love him, but I love me some good angst)”

Word Count: 2,761 (jeez, this is long)

Warnings: Angst, Archie’s a bit of a dick, there is a swear word, and some makin’ out.

Patater Week Day 3 - Fake Dating ( Part 1/?)

Another partially complete one because this fic has decided it wants to be really long. Here’s like 4k though.

“Kent?”

Kent looked up from his cocktail to see Jack looking at him with a frown on his face, various Falconers arrayed behind him and looking on curiously. Oh shit. He had been successfully avoiding Jack for months, and now he goes and picks the same goddamn bar after the game. Is this the universe telling him to stop drinking? Fuck you, universe.

“Jack,” he said evenly. There is an absolutely zero percent chance that Jack will believe him that this is just a coincidence, especially because none of his teammates are here. Sue him for wanting to have a quiet night. Next time he’d just go with them to the shitty club.

“Why are you here?” Jack said forbiddingly. “I thought I made myself clear—“

“Yeah, yeah, I got it, Zimms, you don’t want to see me.” He pushed back from the bar, mouth twisting bitterly, and abandoned his drink. “I’m not stalking you, promise.” He made a split-second, impulsive decision. “I’m here to see him.” He reached out and pulls in the nearest Falconer, not even looking at his face.

“You’re here to see…Tater?” Jack asked incredulously.
