but this speech is a thing of beauty

Things that don’t make a person any less beautiful for having:

- stretch marks
- acne
- skin conditions
- overbites
- scars
- body fat
- eye bags/dark circles
- mental illnesses
- disabilities
- low self esteem
- speech impediments
- trauma
- a different gender than the one they were assigned
- sex
- to take medication
- eating disorders

But you know what I really love about Sense8 it’s how they not only love each other so much but it bleeds into their connections with how they feel about people outside of the cluster.

You see it in RIley’s look of pure affection when she see’s Amanita’s face for the first time. How she’s a bit of awe because this is the person who makes Nomi feel beautiful and like the sun is touching her face. You see it in how Wolfgang bleeds into Nomi’s speech about her sister. How he will destroy anyone who hurt’s his family and by extension that now includes anyone his cluster loves. You see it with how they war with sun’s emotions in regards to her brother. How Will knows that she’s feeling conflicted how she wants to be able to keep old promises, how Sun is many things but heartless has never been one of them. How Wolfgang wants to kill him for her because he’s hurt her too far. How Capheus is so excited to see Detective Mun because he’s expressing the part of Sun that wanted to believe in this person, that wanted to believe that someone who owed her nothing would help her.

it’s so absolutely beautiful.

how to make the venus signs feel special

sorry but ratatouille’s ending is such a perfect ending. i gotta be honest: even with movies i adore, the ending doesn’t tend to be my favorite part, even when they are good. i’m usually all for the middle, the journey, the action.

but this fucking ending is an exception. just put it on and i’ll tear up over that brilliant representation of how just one little thing (such as a simple bite of simple food) can bring back the most nostalgic childhood memories full force, in an instant. that great speech by ego, where he finally understands what gusteau really meant when he said that anyone can cook. that cozy little restaurant they end up opening. that beautiful, soothing song in french. ego, no longer a respected critic but clearly much happier, walking into the restaurant knowing the truth and asking remy, ‘surprise me!’, just. it’s so good. i love it.

One thing I love about Preston is that during Maxsons speech, all the other companion are like “idk man this brotherhood stuff sounds a bit fishy to me ://” but Preston goes full out and pretty much explodes with “WELL ISN’T THAT THE BIGGEST LOAD OF DAMN BULLSHIT I’VE EVER HEARD” and I think that’s beautiful

Oh my dear. My dear, dear man. I refused your first two marriage proposals, not because I didn’t love you, but because I couldn’t bear the idea of a royal life. Couldn’t bear the idea of a life of tours, public duty, of… Well, a life that no longer was really to be my own. But then I thought, he stammers so beautifully, they’ll leave us alone.

•He WILL post videos on Apocalypto_12 at some point
•Everyone needs to go subscribe to his channel right now (my personal recommendation)
•Tyler totally dissing ships regarding real people (specifically Tythan and Septiplier)
•Speaking of Septiplier and Tythan, Tyler said that Tythan is becoming the “new” Septiplier
•Tythan will NEVER be real they’re just friends (statement was repeated several times)

Feel free to add anything else I may have forgotten/possibly gotten wrong!!

12th House
  • The 12th house is very personal, and secluded. This is the house of secrets and hidden personalities. The signs, planets and asteroids residing here are internalised, and reside deep inside who they are. It takes people we trust the most to unlock them, and if someone does they explode like fireworks with profound energy and warmth. Unleashing the 12th house is like a private festival of emotions.
  • Sun in 12th: Someone with this placement hides their ego and self from almost everyone. They may come across as very shy and timid, as well as introverted. If this person opens up to you, you learn that there's confidence underneath the layers of quiet retreat.
  • Moon in 12th: Their emotions are hidden from view. They may be likely to take on everyone else's burdens because they never show they have any of their own. They feel so intensely when alone in their thoughts, and it can be scary for them sometimes. If they open up to you, it's a truly special thing. Their emotions and feelings are like the start of a new ink cartridge: powerful in colour, abundant when written out.
  • Mercury in 12th: They find it very hard to communicate, and probably only feel properly able to to very close friends or online where they can think about their responses. They'll pick texting over verbal confrontation any day. Speeches and arguments are exceptionally hard for them. Midnight conversations with them are beautiful, deep, and unique.
  • Venus in 12th: Love is a hidden gem. They don't often just give their heart to someone. Sometimes they may feel like they should, so can seemingly force themselves into crushes or flirting, but soon withdraw as they realise it doesn't make them happy. Love for them happens in the quiet of their mind, and the arms of their lover, rather than in the public eye. They are also lovers of poetry, reading, and artistic forms which make them think of how they feel themselves.
  • Mars in 12th: They hate to argue a lot. They'd rather work things out without stress or heated emotion. They're also very reserved in sexual affairs, preferring usually to keep the bedroom to serious relationships. If you ever get that far, you'll learn they're deep and intense. This placement may lash out when alone, and will pent up how they feel a lot like Moon in 12th, except it'll usually come out aggressively when alone.
  • Saturn in 12th: They feel so restricted inside. They make their own walls and barriers with their feelings and deeper selves that can stress them out and give them intense worries and stresses. They always feel the need to regulate their dreams and fears, often calling their deeper emotions irrational. Positively, they may tend to hide less of themselves from people.
  • Jupiter in 12th: These individuals no know boundaries deep within them. What they keep inside out of public view is a deep pool of emotion and dreams. They may be extensive dreamers, whether when asleep or awake. Sometimes their fears and anxieties are so strong, they aren't sure how to regulate and manage them.
  • Neptune in 12th: Extreme dreamers. They can often suffer from delusional thoughts of their fears, or being over anxious of parts of life. Neptune is at home here, and is free to gloss over and shroud whatever it wants in mystery and illusion. Someone with this placement may worry and overthink intensely, but never let this out into the open.
  • Uranus in 12th: These people want to revolutionise and change things, but feel unable to do so. They aren't sure how to project their want your change into the world. They can also want to change themselves a lot, and may manifest through several inner mentalities quite quickly to try and align themselves more with their life situations.
  • Pluto in the 12th: Destructive of their inner selves. They constantly change up who they are inside, sometimes without even wanting to. What is hidden inside them is a ball in a china shop. You may find they hide away their emotions on secret blogs or journals. The things they hard away from friends are often intense, which makes it even harder for them to open up.
Mother Teresa is going to be declared a saint... and she shouldn’t be

I’m not shocked but honestly I’m so disappointed. I’m a girl who grew up in Kolkata, someone who grew up hearing about Mother Teresa and to be honest I hate the fact that the liberal, white, Western media has held this woman as some sort of paragon of virtue. And she really wasn’t. Here are some things she did:

  1. She was so anti-abortion that she actually used her Nobel Peace Prize speech to rail against population control, family planning and abortion.
  2. She supported Indira Gandhi’s declaration on the state of emergency in 1975, saying “People are happier. There are more jobs. There are no strikes.”
  3. She idolised poverty and suffering, stating that she thought it was beautiful that the poor had accepted their lot in life. But when it came to her, she would check herself into expensive clinics, in the West, in order to treat her own illnesses.
  4. She was also associated with and supported corrupt businessmen such as Charles Keating and Robert Maxwell, as well as the dictatorial Duvalier family and Albanian dictator Enver Hoxha.
  5. She encouraged members of her order to secretly baptise dying patients with no regard for their own faiths.
  6. Her public image was super misleading because  only a few hundred people are served by even the largest of the homes. In 1998, among the 200 charitable assistance organisations reported to operate in Calcutta, hers wasn’t even ranked among the largest organisations- there were others doing a much better job.
  7. In 1991, a journalist visited the home and described the medical care the patients received as “haphazard” and he observed that sisters, who had no medical knowledge, had to make decisions about patient care, because of the lack of doctors there.
  8. Her order did not distinguish between curable or incurable patients, so that people who could otherwise survive would be at risk of dying from infections and lack of treatment. She herself described her houses as the Houses of the Dying.
  9. She reinforced the popular colonialist image of the white woman giving up her life to save the souls of the “wretched” brown people.

There are more shady things about her but I’m over this beatification of Mother Teresa. I’m over her, and I’m over this constant fawning. Kolkata isn’t the “city where Mother Teresa lived”. It has it’s own identity and Mother Teresa doesn’t, at least in my opinion, deserve this honour that the Catholic Church is bestowing on her.

MORE Beauty and the Beast things I LOVE (collected upon a second viewing):

-The Enchantress/Agathe is played by Hattie Morahan, who played Elinor against Dan Stevens’s Edward in BBC’s 2008 Sense and Sensibility, and I love it when actors are brought back together. Gave me the same smiles as watching Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth in their one scene in The King’s Speech

-LeFou paying everyone in the tavern before “Gaston” because you know he choreographed that months before and they rehearse it every Thursday just in case.

-Cadenza is playing “Be Our Guest” when Maurice overhears the music!

-Maurice’s reaction to Chip is everything

-Maurice and Belle’s relationship is so sweet and wonderful and perfect, and the fact that hearing about it and seeing evidence of it is what finally convinces Beast that not all fathers are douchebags!

-Lumiere’s not a womanizer anymore! He’s devoted to Plumette, not just flirting with her and I love it

-I love Mme. de Garderobe attacking fragile masculinity with gowns and makeup, and then shouting “BE FREE” after them like some gender-role smashing fairy godmother

-”I am not a beast.” Ugh. Just, kill me with perfection why don’t you

-The Beast’s face and eyeroll and nine-year-old boy reaction to Belle’s love of R&J, and the fact that he GIVES HER HIS LIBRARY not because he wants to win her over, but because he just wants her to read better material, and if that isn’t 183% what I would also do, I don’t know what is

-Belle’s happy little shriek after the Beast leaves her alone in the library is all of us don’t pretend it’s not

-Belle trying to hide the rope out the window by standing in front of it. Like, sweetie.

-The juxtaposition of the opening and closing dances! With Adam in the first one flitting from partner to partner and even when he’s dancing with someone, he’s always looking around for a better option, versus that final dance when his eyes are 100% on Belle

-The castle getting more and more dilapidated as each petal falls

-THE BANTER YES FOREVER

There were so many more things but I couldn’t remember them all and I need to go see it again with a notebook, but SErIOUSLY until then COME GUSH IN MY INBOX I need to talk to people about this movie and I’m driving everyone in my real life crazy

Hot dang…

An incredible orchestrated medley of Undertale songs that resurrected this blog from the dead.  Exquisite arrangement with beautiful playing.  Toby Fox himself tweeted about it on Twitter.

0:04 - Determination (speech intro)
1:07 - Spear of Justice
2:47 - sans.
3:32 - Papyrus (Bonetrousle)
4:32 - Bergentrückung / Asgore
5:45 - Toriel (Heartache)
6:39 - Asgore (reprise)

I have no words to say except that I love pretty much everything about this, and I highly recommend you give this a try if you like good things.  It’s a little on the longer side.  It is well worth the length.

Also the second half of the song is quite possibly my favorite Undertale performance of all time.  It’s at least top five.

Lin-Manuel Miranda on His Lifelong Oscars Obsession and Why the Show Still Matters (Guest Column)

The Hollywood Reporter
February 20, 2017

During college, Lin-Manuel Miranda and a friend used to improvise interpretative dance tributes to best picture nominees at their annual Oscar party. “It was a lot of breathing and rolling around,” recalls the creator of the Broadway smash Hamilton. “We had a great Seabiscuit dance one year.”

For the New York-born son of Puerto Rican parents — his father a political consultant, his mother a psychologist — it was just another phase of a lifelong fascination with the Oscars that began when he was growing up in the Inwood section of Manhattan, playing and replaying the telecasts that his family recorded on their VCR. At 37, Miranda is about to cross the threshold from superfan to participant: “How Far I’ll Go,” which he wrote for the Disney film Moana, is nominated for original song, and on Feb. 26, Miranda (with his mother) will attend his first Academy Awards.

It’s an auspicious step in a career that will see him star with Emily Blunt and Colin Firth in Disney’s 2018 Mary Poppins Returns and collaborate with composer Alan Menken on the studio’s live-action The Little Mermaid, one of Miranda’s favorite films and, he reveals here, the gateway to his Oscars obsession.

My brain is a compendium of Oscar moments: Tom Hanks’ beautiful acceptance speech when he won best actor for Philadelphia in 1994. Roberto Benigni climbing over chairs and wanting to make love to everybody in the world when Life Is Beautiful won best foreign-language film in 1999. Kim Basinger presenting in 1990 and telling the audience that one of the best films of the year, Do the Right Thing, was not nominated. For her to take a stand, 25 years before #OscarsSoWhite, was incredible — and impressive because time has shown the prescience of that film.

I expect we’ll see more of that this year. It’s a political time, so I imagine the Oscars will look exactly like your Twitter or Facebook feed. Why should we ignore for three hours what we’re talking about 24 hours a day?

The Oscars were always a family affair when I was a kid. One sort of unintentional tradition we had every year was during the “In Memoriam” part of the show. My family called it the “She died?” section because my dad, who is pop culture-oblivious, would always go, “She died? He died? She died?!” the whole time. So, it was very sad and yet also very funny watching my dad catch up.

When I was a kid, the Oscars felt like this impossibly larger-than-life thing. The first time I felt like I had a horse in the race was in 1990. I was 10, and The Little Mermaid was up for best song and best score. They did that crazy “Under the Sea” number with the late, great Geoffrey Holder and dudes in scuba outfits tap-dancing with flippers. We had a tradition of recording the show on our VHS, and I must have watched it a million and a half times.

There was also an amazing Chuck Workman montage at the beginning of the show that depicted 100 years of filmmaking with classic scores. I was already in love with movies, but this was the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen in my life.

That was the period when Billy Crystal was hosting, and I would memorize his musical spoofs of the year’s top films. He did them with Marc Shaiman, whom I’m working with right now on Mary Poppins Returns… I was a huge fan of those moments and musical numbers — they showed a genuine love of movies while still poking fun at them. I may also be the only person in America who laughed his ass off to “Uma, Oprah. Oprah, Uma.” David Letterman’s commitment to that bit was enough to put it over the top for me. He didn’t care if no one got it. In his head, it was funny.

Hosting the Oscars is not a thing I would ever want to do… You always have to do this dance as a host: You’re playing to a billion people at home, and you’re playing to anxious contestants in a room, and that’s an insanely hard thing to divide. It’s the most thankless task in the world. I have a pretty healthy ego, but it does not extend in that direction. I’d much rather be the guy writing the opening tune than having to deliver it.

Another Oscar moment that really stuck with me was when Whoopi won her best supporting actress for Ghost. I’ll never forget, at the top of her acceptance speech she said, “Ever since I was a little kid, I wanted this,” which is so rare. Then she said, “As a little kid, I lived in the projects, and you’re the people I watched. You’re the people who made me want to be an actor.” For me, it was like she was saying, “If you want this, you can get it, too. I’m proof that you can.”

I had been seeing myself in this world since I was old enough to do anything, and it was as if she reached through the screen to talk to me. I was that kid. Even my mother used to say, “Remember what Whoopi said.”

That speech was the inspiration for the opening song I co-wrote for Neil Patrick Harris, “Bigger,” for the 2013 Tony Awards:

There’s a kid in the middle of nowhere sitting there, living for Tony performances singin’ and flippin’ along with the Pippins and Wickeds and Kinkys, Matildas and Mormonses / So we might reassure that kid and do something to spur that kid  / ‘Cause I promise you all of us up here tonight, We were that kid and now we’re bigger

Another of my favorite moments was in 2005, when they had Antonio Banderas sing “Al Otro Lado Del Rio” from The Motorcycle Diaries, which was nominated for best song. And then when Jorge Drexler, who composed it, won, he went onstage and sang it, like, “This is how it really goes.” It was so funny and ballsy and great. I’m happy whenever Latinos win anything, so I was thrilled by both performances.

I can’t tell you what it feels like in that room because this will be my first time at the Oscars, but I can tell you why the Oscars matter. It’s a night when the arts and artists are formally honored, and this recognition is seen by millions of people across the country and around the world. The show inspires people to keep pursuing their craft, or to seek out the nominated films or the overall body of work of the nominees, and through that exposure, people gain a greater appreciation of what the art of filmmaking brings to our culture.

ZODIAC LIES EXPLAINED

Stereotypes are never accurate, but the astrological ones are plain ridiculous in their lack of logic. With this post, I hope to clear up any ignorance and confusion surrounding these parts of the signs. (PS: I was having a lot of trouble finding Pisces criticism, so excuse or enjoy the bias at the end. Heh.)

Aries are constantly angry, ready to fight, and selfish as hell.” The Aries sign is ruled by Mars, but Mars is not the Planet of the friggin’ Brawl – it’s about intensity and acting upon your impulses. Aries, being the first or “youngest” of the Zodiac, is obviously the most impulsive, but that doesn’t instantly mean they’re violent. It just means they’re ruled by Mars. They might be selfish because Aries is, again, the baby sign; everything is about them because that’s what their place in the Zodiac wheel is. It’s about beginning, or starting anew.

Taurus are lazy, always hungry, always eating, and slovenly.” Taurus is an Earth sign; Earth signs are very focused on the physical realm and all the greatness that can come of it. Taurus is the sign that is most focused on being comfortable and satisfied with their material world. Ruled by Venus, the Taurus sign reasonably enjoys the finer things in life, which includes furniture, food, and clothing. They won’t be slobs if they like to be beautiful and to be surrounded by equally beautiful things. Just stop. On the other hand, the “stubborn” argument can swing both ways, so why not call them determined instead of lazy?

Gemini are two-faced liars with no real personality and all they do is gossip.” Gemini is probably the most quick-thinking of the signs. They are ruled by Mercury, and therefore ruled by thought and speech. They have too many ideas to keep it all to themselves. It’s impossible for a human, let alone a human born under one of the most complex astrological signs, to not have a few hypocritical notions, but just because they tell you a lot of them doesn’t mean they believe all of them, nor all at once. (Half of the time, they’re probably only bouncing those theories off you to see what you think about them.) Mercury is also the planet of learning, so they may be constantly growing past their old feelings and discarding them as they move on to something new.

Cancer are hopeless cry-babies who can’t live without their mommy.” Excuse you. The Cancer sign IS the mommy. Cancer is the sign of home, history, and motherhood, and if they’re ruled by the moon (the luminary of emotion), how could you expect them to not be emotional? (Mind the definition of emotional, would you?) Cancer is also the Cardinal Water sign, meaning they can be efficacious self-starters who don’t need to follow in anyone’s footsteps to get where they want to go. Even if they’re anxious, they’re also generally shy and private, so keeping all those fears to themselves and never asking for help only makes them more self-reliant and brave, whether they’re aware of it or not.

Leo are the most arrogant, self-absorbed, vain people of the Zodiac… However, they’re the most beautiful, so they do have a point.” Leo is the sign that is ruled by the Sun; the Sun is about oneself and one’s ego. There’s nothing arrogant or self-centered about knowing you’re important or valuable and if all you’ve experienced with Leos is belligerence and egocentrism, then that’s your own bad luck. Leo has actually been characterized as friendly and attention-giving. And while every sign is beautiful, Taurus and Libra are ruled by Venus, so if anyone’s going to be stereotyped as the prettiest, it should be them. Leo just wants to be known to every living person as the King or Queen of the Jungle and it’d be heresy to not look the part.

Virgo are neat- and health-freak robots! They’re cute socially awkward bookworms though, so we forgive them.” Virgo is another Earth sign, and as stated above, the Earth element is all about life on earth. Like Taurus, Virgo strives for perfection of lifestyle and self, but on a much deeper level. That doesn’t mean that’s all they care about – it’s just one of the many things that are important to them. This sign is also ruled by Mercury, the planet of thought, so (that “robot” argument is completely out the window) it’s ridiculous to assume they’re all shy and prone to stuttering. They’re analytical and calculating and it’s very common for them to speak clearly, precisely, perfectly, able to get their point across in a succinct and exact manner. You got one thing right, though – they are damn cute.

Libra are soulless divas who only care about their fake friends and lipstick. They’re passive, feckless, and so indecisive that they couldn’t just PICK SOMETHING to save their life.” Libra is ruled by Venus, the planet of beauty and love; they are drawn to what they think looks nice, and there’s nothing wrong with having a keen eye for pulchritude. They are the Cardinal Air sign, and that mixture of values (leadership, self-reliance & social justice and progression) results in a great need to be fair; Libra sees from everyone’s point of view and this leads them to very vacillating places, but is that really a bad thing? They don’t lack a backbone; I think sometimes they just don’t know how to use it.

Scorpio are murderous sex-fiends who probably have blood orgies in the basement every Friday night for Satan.” Scorpio is ruled by the planets Mars and Pluto; that is an explosive combination of very intense energies, and thus Scorpio is the most intense Zodiac sign. They are known for being very emotional (as a Water sign) and prone to extremes (as the inhabitant of the eighth house), but as with Aries, this doesn’t have to make them volatile. They are driven and often controlled by their feelings and urges, but statistically, most serial killers are not Scorpios, so… There goes that argument.

Sagittarius probably don’t have any bone in their body that hasn’t been broken at least once because they’re so stupid and reckless.” Sagittarius is a Fire sign, making them very vital and dynamic people. They are adventurous, impulsive, and most of all, defined by the pursuit of personal freedom; they hate chains and confines more than anything. They’re known for making a lot of mistakes, but those mistakes are the way Sagittarians learn best, and because this sign is ruled by Jupiter (the planet associated with good luck, morals, and life paths), what these people learn is often laden with incredibly valuable and profound philosophies.

Capricorn do nothing but work, work, work. They’re too uptight to function.” Capricorn is the Cardinal Earth sign; they are characterized by their efficacy, determined nature, and great drive to succeed. They yearn to be the best that they can be and because of this, they often find themselves trapped in a place where they’re only capable of focusing on what they want to have and grow into. This doesn’t mean they can never leave that place, but depending on other parts of the Capricorn person’s chart, they may not want to. They are known as the most serious of the Zodiac only because they’re ruled by Saturn, the planet with a stick up its ass. (Every Capricorn I know is goofy as hell, so there’s that.)

Aquarius are weirdo aliens who come up with conspiracy theories for fun and feeling nothing is their number one hobby.” Aquarius is ruled by Uranus, the planet of uniqueness and dissent. They are next to Sagittarius in terms of freedom of thought. Driven by expansion of the mind and progression of self and the collective, Aquarius has the biggest ideas of the Zodiac, and being an Air sign, they want to share them. However, Aquarius are prone to feeling distant and disconnected, and they tend to behave as if that’s where they want to stay – on the outside. They want to be different. They are often dissatisfied with the current state of everything and they believe they will be the sign to make positive changes. They are off-beat, yes, but in their mind, that’s the best thing to be.

Pisces only smoke weed, sleep, and pretend to be hipster, but they’re just fish. Fish can’t be hipster.” Pisces is ruled by Neptune, the planet of imagination and illusions; Pisces is the most creative sign of the Zodiac, and that results in them leaning toward slightly unconventional ideas and habits. However, it is the Mutable Water sign, making Pisceans adaptable, emotional, and often passive people. This stereotype seems to imply that Pisces have little to no personality, but Pisces is a deep, dynamic, profound sign, and as proof of its gentle magnificence, I offer this collection of precise, hard-hitting Tumblr hate directed at it: *crickets chirping* Oh, right. There is none. Because Pisces is perfect.

I made a Facebook status that said, “My body is an intricate, awful tapestry of every horrible thing that can happen to your skin,” and everybody gave me these long-winded speeches about how my scars don’t make me any less beautiful, and how strong I am, and all of these lovely things. Like, borderline tear-inducing positivity and love as far as the eye could see, and links to self-care resources, just everything you could ask an internet community to do for your well-being.

I was talking about how I’m covered in mosquito bites and got real bad titty sunburn from wearing a low-cut tank top.

Deaf!Dean drabble 1

Cas’s eyes open when the sun comes up. It’s barely morning, but he isn’t surprised to see Dean’s green ones staring back. Now that the angel has become human, it’s common knowledge that he sleeps the longest. And Dean doesn’t seem to mind.

Dean is lying on his arm and he shifts, bringing both hands to the front of him.

Good morning he signs with slow movements of his hands as Cas yawns.

Cas smiles sleepily, signing ‘good morning beautiful’ back to his deaf husband before leaning in for a kiss.

Dean blushes a little, and it’s Cas’s favorite, because it always makes his freckles darker and tinged with pink.

I am watching you mad Dean signs to Cas. Cas furrowed his eyebrows, tilting his head. He grabbed the notebook on their side table.

You just signed to me that you’re watching me get mad, wrote Cas.

Dean read it with a scowl, then sighed. Cas pushed the notebook to the bed, showing Dean the proper sign.

Sleep, Cas signed.

Sleep, Dean tried again. I’m watching you sleep.

Cas smiled, kissing his husband on the forehead in praise before signing very good.

Dean wiggled his eyebrows playfully: Eileen’s been teaching me a lot. Like—

Cas grabbed Dean’s hands and pushed them down into the sheets.

Dean! he signed, scolding. That’s inappropriate.

But Dean just threw his head back, laughing. And that’s when Cas realized he’d done it just to mess with him.

Dean buried his cheek into the fluff of the pillow with a half smile, his hair disheveled and his eyes bright.

They stared at each other, both of them smiling, kicking toes under the sheets.  It had been three months since the accident where Dean lost his hearing and almost the same amount of time since Cas had come back from the dead as a human. Cas and Eileen had been teaching him sign language, helping him adjust to hunting without hearing, but Dean still had a lot to learn.

Lovingly, Cas put both palms over Dean’s ears, cupping them as if his long-absent grace were attempting to heal them.

“Hi” Cas mouthed, as if the hands were the only thing that was keeping Dean from hearing the word.

“Hi” said Dean back, his speech slurred and different since the accident, but, in Cas’s opinion, more beautiful than it had ever been.

But it was just a game they played. Because Cas knew and Dean knew; they didn’t need angelic grace or the ability to hear. In fact, there was something beautiful that stemmed from the silent, very human world they shared.

Dean put both of his own palms on top of Cas’s holding them tight against his own face as he smiled.

“I love you,” Cas mouthed.

“I love you, too,” said Dean.

—  what the signs remind me of
I think the worst part about going through a betrayal, a loss, a breakup, someone leaves your life, someone proves to be not what you thought they were, the worst part about that, is that you immediately feel stupid for having trusted somebody and having let somebody into your life. And… I think that’s so terrible because trusting people and letting people into your life are beautiful things to do, they’re not stupid things to do.

Shitty and Tater stared at each other while Jack ordered three coffees and some banana bread from the bakery.

“Hey guys, coffee’ll be here in a bit. That was some workout, right? Shits, you gotta work on your core more,” Jack said as he returned to the table.

“Yes, yes, very interesting gym conversation,” said Tater impatiently. “Now I’m congratulate you on proposal with B.”

“I have the whole thing on tape and I think I’m going to cry for the fifth time just thinking about it,” Shitty said. “I’ve replayed it three times already.”

Jack laughed, “This way you won’t cry when we show it again at the wedding, eh?”

“Jack you beautiful bastard, you know I’m going to be sobbing my ass off, especially when I’m giving my speech.”

“Speech? What speech?” Tater asked. “Jack not choose best man yet. Who know if you make speech? Maybe I’m best man and make speech.”

Jack glanced at the way the two men are glaring at each other. He gingerly got up from their table.

“I think our coffee orders are up. Imma go and get them.”

“Ransom, Holster,” Bitty sat in front of the two of them in his Sunday best, the sun catching on his golden hair and an innocuous golden band on his hand. “I have a very important favor to ask you two.”

Ransom glanced at the ring on Bitty’s finger. “We’ve talked about this and neither of us can be your best man, bro.”

“Yeah, we can’t cheat on each other like this. Bros don’t let bros be best men and feel left out,” Holster added.

Bitty was almost vibrating. “I know! That’s why I’m asking the both of you to be my co bestmen!! Ransom, Holster, will you two do me the honor of making me the happiest groom on earth?”

“BRAHH!”

“YES YES YES, A THOUSAND TIMES YES!!!”

Let’s talk about this moment from How to Fight a Dragon’s Fury, shall we?

See, the thing that has always struck me about Hiccup speaking in Dragonese is the fact that, nine times out of ten, he doesn’t really need to. Throughout the series, it is clearly shown that almost every single dragon Hiccup meets can understand Norse, even if they cannot speak it themselves, and every other Viking gets on fine training and working with dragons without ever needing to speak in the dragons’ own language. Consider the beginning of How to Cheat a Dragon’s Curse, in which Hiccup attempts to get the Sabre Tooth Driver Dragons to help the Pirate Training Programme boys by speaking to them in Dragonese, only for Snotlout to barge in and yell-and-whip them into following orders, speaking only in Norse. This is just one example of how Cressida shows us that in everyday life, actively speaking in Dragonese doesn’t really help Hiccup all that much.

Of course, understanding what the dragons are saying themselves is a different matter: it allows Hiccup insight into what Toothless is thinking and feeling, and indeed has saved his life numerous times when he came across dragons that could pose a threat to him. Additionally, he has repeatedly managed to get out of scrapes by manipulating the dragons he encounters through speech when they were unlikely to have been among the dragons that understood Norse (the Monstrous Strangulator in How to Be a Pirate, for example, had probably never even met humans since being placed in the cave by Grimbeard).

However, while speaking and understanding Dragonese is clearly incredibly useful, when it comes to ensuring that dragons understand what Hiccup is saying, then like I said, nine times out of ten it is shown that speaking to them in their own language isn’t necessary - and arguably, if both humans and dragons generally understand Norse, then in some cases it would seem most logical to speak in Norse, wouldn’t it? I’m sure almost all the dragons Hiccup addresses in his speech here would understand him speaking in his own language, and even if not then there would be enough dragons there who understood to fill in all the rest.

So why does Hiccup do it? Why, in every single exchange with a dragon Hiccup ever has, does he bother to speak in Dragonese?

The answer is simple: it is generally accepted that speaking to someone in their own language is a sign of respect.

Look, I live in England, and while I am proud of my country on a lot of issues, language is not one of them. My foreign language education at school has been patchy at best: we only began getting any foreign language lessons at all when I was about seven or eight, and while we had timetabled French lessons at middle school, for the first three years we suffered from a hugely inconsistent teacher. At high school the only foreign language options available for GCSE were French and German, and most people only took one of these to complete what was called the English Baccalaureate, rather than because we had been filled with passion about foreign languages. While the picture is not as bad all over the UK (I went to very small country schools with limited resources, whereas my city cousins had teachers available for language lessons since they started primary education), the general sloppiness of UK foreign language education compared to the foreign language education in place in other countries has left us apologetically relying on the impeccable English of foreigners to get by whenever we venture anywhere beyond our borders.

This is something that has always really frustrated me, not only because I feel naturally vulnerable when I can’t understand everyone around me, but also because every time I’ve ever relied on someone switching to my language for us to be able to communicate it has felt like an insult to them. English is such a widely spoken language that as a country we’ve become lazy. It is because of all this that I am choosing to study French at A Level, and potentially at university, because I so desperately want to be able to show my respect by putting in the effort to speak to someone in their own language.

Hiccup? He understands this. He, at a very young age, realised that the best way to show respect to the dragons he loved was to speak with them, not just to them, using their own unique language. This is evident throughout the series - why else would he work with dragons and train them through speech when he could just as easily make himself understood in Norse? He even speaks to Stormfly and the Wodensfang in Dragonese, despite knowing that they can speak Norse themselves. It all harks back to Hiccup’s fundamental belief in equality - if dragons can put in the effort to understand Norse, he can put in the effort to understand Dragonese.

This is something I find extremely cool in and of itself: the demonstration of the power of language and the portrayal of such a humble and compassionate hero in a children’s series is amazing. However, I also love the significance of this simple, everyday choice by Hiccup in his wider message and ambitions for his kingdom. There is a quote from A Hero’s Guide to Deadly Dragons that really sheds light on this, just after Hiccup discovers that Stormfly can speak Norse: “Long ago, the bards say, dragons and men spoke together as happily as you or I. Now, Hiccup was one of the only people he knew who spoke Dragonese, and although dragons generally understand Norse (which they call ‘lumpentongue’) Hiccup had never before met a dragon who could speak it.”

Clearly, when the rift grew between humans and dragons, their skills of communication dwindled. Eventually, humans were so sure of their superiority and so powerful over dragons that they stopped putting in any effort to converse with the dragons as equals. It was down to the dragons to understand the humans - why would it ever be the other way around? We even know that Stoick banned the speaking of Dragonese. All of the glory of the original Kingdom of the Wilderwest fizzled out into everything that Hiccup knew was wrong, with slavery and inequality rife. Yet the simple speaking of Dragonese is one of the clearest and most powerful ways that Hiccup tried to reverse this and build a better world, even from the very beginning, at ten years old, when he knew from the start that he wouldn’t be the sort of person to train his hunting dragon by mindlessly yelling at it, but instead by speaking in its own language.

Dear Thor, there’s so much in this. This series is so deep and important and powerful. And never has this beautiful message been more evident than in the moment in How to Fight a Dragon’s Fury when Hiccup asks Stormfly to translate his speech.

For one thing, it makes it very clear that Hiccup is speaking to Furious, appealing directly to his enemy with a message of respect, compassion and love, in the only way he can. Most of all, Hiccup’s choice here means that the dragons are forced to listen to the human voice, and the humans are forced to listen to the dragon voice.

This is the speech that ends the war, and begins a new era, one with a future that is brighter and better, and Hiccup chooses not to use his own language to gain power, but to begin this new future alongside a dragon, with the two languages intertwined and equal.

It’s poetic. It’s beautiful. It’s powerful. And it makes me love him all the more.
