psa for the yoi fandom: russian names & how to use them

Russian guides: masterpost | patronyms | terms of affection | answered asks

I’m going to start by swearing this isn’t me just complaining but a general resource for the Yuri on Ice fandom because I’ve noticed some mistakes in the naming conventions used among the fandom and want to help correct them. Especially in how the fandom treats diminutives. I absolutely love seeing the huge amount of interest in Russian diminutives, etc. in fanart and fics and hopefully this breakdown will help continue that trend and interest and even spur some more ideas in fandom content.

So let’s go through some important details below the cut!

How to Write a Novel:  Tips For Visual Thinkers.

1.  Plotting is your friend.

This is basically a must for all writers (or at least, it makes our job significantly easier/less time consuming/less likely to make us want to rip our hair out by the roots), but visual thinkers tend to be great at plotting.  There’s something about a visible outline that can be inexplicably pleasing to us, and there are so many great ways to go about it.   Here are a few examples:

  • The Three-Act Structure
    • This one is one of the simplest:  it’s divided into the tried-and-true three acts, or parts, a la William Shakespeare, and includes a basic synopsis of what happens in each.  It’s simple, it’s familiar, it’s easy to add to, and it get’s the job done.
    • It starts with Act I – i.e. the set-up, or establishing the status quo – which is usually best if it’s the shortest act, as it tends to bore audiences quickly.  This leads to Act II, typically the longest, which   introduces the disruptor and shows how characters deal with it, and is sandwiched by Act III (the resolution.)
  • The Chapter-by-Chapter
    • This is the one I use the most.  It allows you to elucidate on the goings on of your novel in greater detail than the quintessential three act synopsis generally could, fully mapping out your manuscript one chapter at a time.  The descriptions can be as simple or as elaborate as you need them to be, and can be added to or edited throughout the progression of your novel.
    • Can easily be added to/combined with the three-act structure.
  • The Character Arc(s)
    • This isn’t one that I’ve used a lot, but it can be a lot of fun, particularly for voice-driven/literary works:  instead on focusing on the events of the plot, this one centralizes predominantly around the arc of your main character/characters.  As with its plot-driven predecessors, it can be in point-by-point/chapter-by-chapter format, and is a great way to map out character development.
  • The Tent Moments
    • By “tent moments,” I mean the moments that hold up the foundation (i.e. the plot) of the novel, in the way that poles and wires hold up a tent.  This one builds off of the most prevalent moments of the novel – the one’s you’re righting the story around – and is great for writers that want to cut straight to the action.  Write them out in bullet points, and plan the rest of the novel around them.
  • The Mind Map
    • This one’s a lot of fun, and as an artist, I should probably start to use it more.  It allows you to plot out your novel the way you would a family tree, using doodles, illustrations, and symbols to your heart’s content.  Here’s a link to how to create basic mind maps on YouTube.

2.  “Show don’t tell” is probably your strong suit.

If you’re a visual thinker, your scenes are probably at least partially originally construed as movie scenes in your head.  This can be a good thing, so long as you can harness a little of that mental cinematography and make your readers visualize the scenes the way you do.

A lot of published authors have a real big problem with giving laundry lists of character traits rather than allowing me to just see for myself.  Maybe I’m spoiled by the admittedly copious amounts of fanfiction I indulge in, where the writer blissfully assumes that I know the characters already and let’s the personalities and visuals do the talking.  Either way, the pervasive “telling” approach does get tedious.

Here’s a hypothetical example.  Let’s say you wanted to describe a big, tough, scary guy, who your main character is afraid of.  The “tell” approach might go something like this:

Tommy was walking along when he was approached by a big, tough, scary guy who looked sort of angry.

“Hey, kid,” said the guy.  “Where are you going?”

“I’m going to a friend’s house,” Tommy replied.

I know, right?  This is Boring with a capital ‘B.’

On the other hand, let’s check out the “show” approach:

The man lumbered towards Tommy, shaved head pink and glistening in the late afternoon sun.  His beady eyes glinted predatorily beneath the thick, angry bushes of his brows.

“Hey, kid,” the man grunted, beefy arms folded over his pot belly.  “Where are you going?”

“I’m going to a friend’s house,” Tommy replied, hoping the man didn’t know that he was ditching school.

See how much better that is?  We don’t need to be told the man is big, tough, and scary looking because the narrative shows us, and draws the reader a lot more in the process.

This goes for scene building, too.  For example:

Exhibit A:

Tyrone stepped out onto his balcony.  It was a beautiful night.

Lame.

Exhibit B:

Tyrone stepped out onto his balcony, looking up at the inky abyss of the night sky, dotted with countless stars and illuminated by the buttery white glow of the full moon.

Much better.

3.  But conversely, know when to tell.

A book without any atmosphere or vivid, transformative descriptors tends to be, by and large, a dry and boring hunk of paper.  That said, know when you’re showing the reader a little too much.

Too many descriptors will make your book overflow with purple prose, and likely become a pretentious read that no one wants to bother with.

So when do you “tell” instead of “show?”  Well, for starters, when you’re transitioning from one scene to the next.

For example:

As the second hand of the clock sluggishly ticked along, the sky ever-so-slowly transitioning from cerulean, to lilac, to peachy sunset.  Finally, it became inky black, the moon rising above the horizon and stars appearing by the time Lakisha got home.

These kind of transitions should be generally pretty immemorable, so if yours look like this you may want to revise.

Day turned into evening by the time Lakisha got home.

See?  It’s that simple.

Another example is redundant descriptions:  if you show the fudge out of a character when he/she/they are first introduced and create an impression that sticks with the reader, you probably don’t have to do it again.

You can emphasize features that stand out about the character (i.e. Milo’s huge, owline eyes illuminated eerily in the dark) but the reader probably doesn’t need a laundry list of the character’s physical attributes every other sentence.  Just call the character by name, and for God’s sake, stay away from epithets:  the blond man.  The taller woman.  The angel.  Just, no.  If the reader is aware of the character’s name, just say it, or rework the sentence.

All that said, it is important to instill a good mental image of your characters right off the bat.

Which brings us to my next point…

4.  Master the art of character descriptions.

Visual thinkers tend to have a difficult time with character descriptions, because most of the time, they tend to envision their characters as played their favorite actors, or as looking like characters from their favorite movies or TV shows.

That’s why you’ll occasionally see characters popping up who are described as looking like, say, Chris Evans.

It’s a personal pet peeve of mine, because A) what if the reader has never seen Chris Evans?  Granted, they’d probably have to be living on Mars, but you get the picture:  you don’t want your readers to have to Google the celebrity you’re thirsting after in order for them to envision your character.  B) It’s just plain lazy, and C) virtually everyone will know that the reason you made this character look like Chris Evans is because you want to bang Chris Evans.

Not that that’s bad or anything, but is that really what you want to be remembered for?

Now, I’m not saying don’t envision your characters as famous attractive people – hell, that’s one of the paramount joys of being a writer.  But so’s describing people!  Describing characters is a lot of fun, draws in the reader, and really brings your character to life.

So what’s the solution?  If you want your character to look like Chris Evans, describe Chris Evans.

Here’s an example of what I’m talking about:

Exhibit A:

The guy got out of the car to make sure Carlos was alright, and holy cow, he looked just like Dean Winchester!

No bueno.  Besides the fact that I’m channeling the writing style of 50 Shades of Grey a little here, everyone who reads this is going to process that you’re basically writing Supernatural fanfiction.  That, or they’ll have to Google who Dean Winchester is, which, again, is no good.

Exhibit B:

The guy got out of the car to make sure Carlos was alright, his short, caramel blond hair stirring in the chilly wind and a smattering of freckles across the bridge of his nose.  His eyes were wide with concern, and as he approached, Carlos could see that they were gold-tinged, peridot green in the late afternoon sun.

Also note that I’m keeping the description a little vague here;  I’m doing this for two reasons, the first of which being that, in general, you’re not going to want to describe your characters down to the last detail.  Trust me.  It’s boring, and your readers are much more likely to become enamored with a well-written personality than they are a vacant sex doll.  Next, by keeping the description a little vague, I effectively manage to channel a Dean Winchester-esque character without literally writing about Dean Winchester.

Let’s try another example:

Exhibit A:

Charlotte’s boyfriend looked just like Idris Elba.

Exhibit B:

Charlotte’s boyfriend was a stunning man, eyes pensive pools of dark brown amber and a smile so perfect that it could make you think he was deliciously prejudiced in your favor.  His skin was dark copper, textured black hair gray at the temples, and he filled out a suit like no other.

Okay, that one may have been because I just really wanted to describe Idris Elba, but you get the point:  it’s more engaging for the reader to be able to imagine your character instead of mentally inserting some sexy fictional character or actor, however beloved they may be.

So don’t skimp on the descriptions!

5.  Don’t be afraid to find inspiration in other media!

A lot of older people recommend ditching TV completely in order to improve creativity and become a better writer.  Personally, if you’ll pardon my French, I think this is bombastic horseshit.

TV and cinema are artistic mediums the same way anything else is.  Moreover, the sheer amount of fanart and fanfiction – some of which is legitimately better than most published content – is proof to me that you can derive inspiration from these mediums as much as anything else.

The trick is to watch media that inspires you.  I’m not going to say “good media” because that, in and of itself, is subjective.  I, for example, think Supernatural is a fucking masterpiece of intertextual postmodernism and amazing characterization, whereas someone else might think it’s a hot mess of campy special effects and rambling plotlines.  Conversely, one of my best friends loves Twilight, both the movies and the books, which, I’m going to confess, I don’t get at all.  But it doesn’t matter that it isn’t good to me so long as it’s good to her.

So watch what inspires you.  Consume any whatever movies, books, and shows you’re enthusiastic about, figure out what you love most about them, and apply that to your writing.  Chances are, readers will find your enthusiasm infectious.

As a disclaimer, this is not to say you get a free pass from reading:  I’ve never met a good writer who didn’t read voraciously.  If you’re concerned that you can’t fall in love with books the way you used to (which, sadly, is a common phenomenon) fear not:  I grappled with that problem after I started college, and I’ll be posting an article shortly on how to fall back in love reading.

So in the meanwhile, be sure to follow my blog, and stay tuned for future content!

(This one goes out to my friend, beta reader, and fellow writer @megpieeee, who is a tremendous visual thinker and whose books will make amazing movies someday.)

IMPORTANT!!!! So I know that I’m making comics about Breath of the Wild, but the truth is I actually still don’t know very much about the game, so as strange as this may sound please don’t talk about Breath of the Wild to me!

THE TIME IS APPROACHING! BREATH OF THE WILD COMICS ARE ALMOST HERE! They start June 5th!

This post is important because of the format I’ll be using to present the ideas in the comics. Since there’s no companion character for BOTW, I decided to just make it so that there’s two Links: one for me and one for my friend.

The Link that was the player in any comic will be the one with their hair fully showing, while the Link with their headgear on is the person who was just watching. To also help with recognition, the two Links’ equipment will never change (other than newbie getting better armor after Kakariko). Obviously in game we changed gear to whatever was best for the situation, but it’d be a bit too much of a hassle in my opinion to keep track of which Link was which if I switched up their gear all the time.

Also of note: not everything will be draw to perfect detail! It’s honestly part of my style to simply things and/or go off of memory - I find it more fun that way :>

I hope this all makes sense, and I hope that you all look forward to coming BOTW content! >:D I know I sure am!

A Romance of Three Kings

Despite being rescued from certain death, Urie seems less than happy. Note the dialogue exchange between the two of them.

“An explanation, to you? You think I can forgive you like this?”

(….)

(No, I can’t. No, I can’t!!)

Urie ehoes the same sentiment of being unable to forgive him, and the elipses show a clear hesitance.

Why does he say those things though, and what are we meant to take from Urie’s apprehension.

Yuri on Ice BD booklet translation (with Eiji Abiko & Junpei Tatenaka interview) - Volume 3

Had a busy weekend, but finally here is the full translation of the BD/DVD vol.3 booklet. The format is the same as usual. I wonder if Yuuri was ever able to enjoy a banquet (and remember it), lol.

EDIT: I changed the translation of the street food eaten by Guang-Hong in episode 6 after being notified that it’s actually the Chinese “jianbing”, which is a kind of crepe, and not “rice cracker” which is what “senbei” means in Japanese. Thank you very much @dragonaeve  for the input!! In Japanese it’s written 煎餅, with the same exact kanji of “senbei” (rice cracker), and though in the anime it totally didn’t look like a senbei to me I failed to notice that it was a false friend… (And to think I even researched all the other Chinese food listed in the topics section to be sure..)

The booklet has 3 parts:
1) Character introduction for Minami-kun, Georgi and Leo.
2) “Topics”, in other words random curiosities. It includes an explanation of how Japanese qualification matches work.
3) Interview with the figure skating animators Eiji Abiko and Junpei Tatenaka. Some of the things they say might be a little difficult to understand if you don’t know a lot about how animation works, but if you google “inbetween animations” you will find more detailed information. The parts in round brackets are exactly like they are in the original text, it’s not something I added.

Translations of the audio commentary and choreography parts coming in the next few days… (As usual I still haven’t even been able to put the BD in the player despite having it since the 23rd, sigh)

***If you wish to share this translation please do it by reblogging or posting a link to it***

***Re-translating into other languages is ok but please mention that this post is the source***

The future protagonist of Japan’s figure skating world!

Kenjirou Minami
voiced by Ayumu Murase

Profile
Date of birth: August 18th, 17 years old
Height: 155 cm
Blood type: O
From Hakata, Fukuoka prefecture

Introduction
Last season, all eyes were on him when in the Japan National Championships, in which he participated from the junior section, he became the center of attention and obtained the bronze medal at the young age of 16. This season, which marks his senior debut, he first succeeded in a quadruple jump at the Chu-Shikoku-Kyushu Regional Tournament. Despite his small build, he brightens the hearts of the audience with his energetic skating and exhuberant dancing. The success rate of his quadruple jump and triple axel is still low, but he is the most promising young athlete that might become the future Japanese ace.
He admires Yuuri Katsuki, who is from Kyushu like him, and for this reason he chose “Lohengrin” as his short program in the current season. His parents are doctors and his older brother is also a medical student.

The late-blooming veteran becomes a witch.

Georgi Popovich
voiced by Wataru Hatano

Profile
Date of birth: December 26th, 27 years old
Height: 178 cm
Blood type: private
Russian

He is a veteran who can perform high jumps worthy of one of Yakov’s students, but always tended to be overshadowed by fellow student Nikiforov. In this season where Nikiforov is absent he chose 2 programs based on the theme of “heartbreak” to fight to become Russia’s top athlete. With his peculiar artistic sense, in the short program he plays an evil witch that puts a curse on the princess, and in the free the prince that will save her.
As also stated by Yakov, he practices hard and strictly follows his coach’s advices. He always entertains fans with his feminine costumes and in Japan is popularly called “pigeon”.

Because music was always with me.

Leo de la Iglesia
voiced by Shunichi Toki

Profile
Date of birth: August 2nd, 19 years old
Height: 167 cm
Blood type: O
American

Introduction
A skater that knows how to show his charm and always performs programs brimming with originality, choreographed by himself. He doesn’t jump quadruples, but his Program Components are highly praised because of his performances that give importance to the music. This season he tried his hand at hip-hop in the short program and won the American tournament of the Grand Prix series, held in his country. He is riding on the wave.
In his everyday life he is a cheerful American of Mexican origin and is very sociable. He has many friends among fellow figure skaters and his fans are always looking forward to the private shots he uploads on the SNS. He respects Nikiforov, who also choreographs his own programs.

YURI!!!’s TOPIC

TOPIC 1: Greed to SNS** (Thirst for the SNS)
There are many skaters who share information with fans all over the world via the internet. Now that SNS are popular, skaters will upload a variety of contents, from their practice footage to their daily meals and private pictures of their holidays, some even being as open as to post romantic shots with their lovers. Fans can’t take their eyes off the social networks. In this regard, one of the hottest accounts is Thailand’s Phichit Chulanont’s. From pictures of his fainted teacher to candid shots of other skaters, he uploads any “juicy moment” he witnesses, in a way being the terror of the ones close to him. However, fans absolutely don’t want him to change his habits.
[**translator’s note: “Greed to SNS” is what is actually written in English in the booklet, the part in round brackets is a more exact translation of what the Japanese says. All titles of the topics are in both Japanese & English and I’m usually leaving the original English as it is unless it’s weird.]

*Yuuri’s “Hanarezu ni Soba ni Ite” was also spread to the world
*The results of matches and other news are always at hand
*Maybe Anya’s gaze was already turned to someone else here…?
(Phichit’s collection)
*Regular updates about his state
*He will never miss the chance to get a good shot
*Sometimes it’s important to have the courage to upload!

TOPIC 2: Personal Best Score
In figure skating, which is a technical sport, an athlete’s highest score up to the present is called “personal best” and the highest score of the season “season best”. Not only his ranking, but whether he managed to surpass his personal best is very important for a skater’s motivation. The season best is also important, because some big tournaments like the World Championships have a required minimum score to participate. ISU (International Skating Union) openly displays all skaters’ personal bests, but only the results obtained in competitions officially recognized by ISU are a target, therefore even if a skater achieves good results in the Japan National Championships or the Chu-Shikoku-Kyushu Regional Tournament, unfortunately they will not be recognized.

*The score display for regional tournaments is simple
*The electric scoreboard of the GP’s China tournament (showing the PB mark too)
*The TV live broadcast shows the PB mark too

TOPIC 3: National Competitions
For Japanese skaters to be able to represent the nation in the World Championships or the Olympics, they need to first win the regional block tournaments and then rank high in the Japan National Championships in December. There are 6 block tournaments, including the “Chu-Shikoku-Kyushu Regional Tournament” in which Yuuri participated, and if you rank high in these you qualify for the Eastern Japan or Western Japan Championships. And if you rank high in those you can proceed to the National Championships (the ones who ranked among the highest the previous year and the ones who have to attend overseas tournaments close to the date of the national competition will be exempted from the qualifiers). By the way, regarding the Grand Prix Series, participants are chosen based on the results obtained in international tournaments the previous year and other elements.

*4 senior athletes are participating in the Chu-Shikoku-Kyushu Regional Tournament
*The skating order is chosen by drawing lots the day before
*Official practice takes place 2 times, in the morning of the day of the SP and FS
*It’s not rare for tournaments to be held in rinks without viewer stands
*The skating order and raking are printed on paper
*The award ceremony is often done outside of the rink and not on the ice

TOPIC 4: Chinese Gourmet
This year’s China tournament of the Grand Prix was held in Beijing. While other athletes are preparing for the match, Victor and Yuuri went to enjoy the traditional Chinese “hotpot”. Various kinds of food, like mutton, are dipped in a pot that has two compartments, one with mild hot water soup and the other with spicy Mala soup. “Duck blood” is also a classic dish that goes with hotpot. The Chinese representant Guang-Hong Ji, who isn’t a fan of hotpot, likes the jianbing (crepes) sold at food stalls. Before the matches Yuuri was paying attention to what he ate not to compromise his physical condition, but at the banquet he had to look after a drunken Victor and it doesn’t seem that he could really have a taste of the Chinese delicacies.

*Winter is the season of Chinese mitten crab. The same as the skating season!
*”Drunken shrimp” consists of live shrimps soaked in alcohol
*”Duck blood” has a high nutritional value
*People dip their favorite ingredients in the hotpot
*Rice crackers are affordable snacks that can be purchased from food stalls

Figure skating animation
Eiji Abiko & Junpei Tatenaka interview

Tatenaka-san’s Victor is so elegant. (Abiko)
Abiko-san’s spins are amazing! (Tatenaka)

Abiko: I also took part in the production of director Yamamoto’s previous work “ENDLESS NIGHT”, but I’ve always liked drawing looking at real life pictures, therefore when I was offered this job I thought that I had the necessary technical skills to do it. In the previous work there were some points I believed could have been done a different way, and I felt that in this new project we could try it out.
Tatenaka: Before starting the job, I was suggested to try figure skating myself since the work was going to be about it, so I went to a skating class. Though it was just 4 days. The last time I skated was in elementary school, but (when I actually tried this time) I realized that I was going to draw something I knew nothing about. I could understand on which part of the blade you shift your weight when skating forward or backward, and that was really helpful later on. (When I watched the real life footage) after knowing that, I noticed that skaters really land on those points after a jump. They can land on the exact point even after spinning around at that speed! When I see videos where you can see them stress the landing to adjust the position so that they don’t miss the point I have goosebumps.

-Ideas to make performances look beautiful.-

T: What I realized when we started working is that scenes were very long, in the beginning.
A: The director wanted to recreate a figure skating program and was determined to show the full sequence without shortening it. This means that all movements need to be connected, which takes a lot of work.
T: Especially in the first part of the show, there were many sequences over 10 seconds long. You draw and draw and it never ends (LOL).
A: To make skating performances look beautiful, I guess it was important to add a fair amount of inbetween animations (pictures added between key animations to supplement them). We gradually understood that using many key animations during slow movements wouldn’t make them look better unless they are very accurate.
T: I had the idea to show the poses on screen for a longer time. (I was among the ones who went to Miyamoto-sensei’s choreography sessions, and) even poses that were really impressive when I saw them live only lasted an instant in the recorded footage, and it shifted to the next pose right away. If we recreated that in the anime, poses that were supposed to look impressive wouldn’t last, therefore I decided to use 2 extra key animations for some parts, so that the beautiful silhouette would stay in the viewers’ eyes. I like to draw “impressions”, and I always work thinking about what I want to show and communicate to the viewers. With figure skating I felt this all the more important.
A: There are many things I found amazing about the scenes created by Tatenaka-san. Like Victor’s elegance in episode 1, isn’t that wonderful? When I watched it I was like “jeez, I need to get better too”, and he also has lots of ideas. Like JJ’s spin. I was determined to absolutely learn something from all that.
T: Thank you. I like how Abiko-san draws all the characters properly. Yuuri always has an expression that fits his personality and the situation. And the spins are amazing! I couldn’t draw them satisfactorily and had to redraw them many times… I admit I was envious of Abiko-san’s soft touch that makes movements connect so smoothly.
A: My favorite character is Otabek. I like how he is tough and cool.
T: I like Giacometti. And JJ and Minami-kun. I think they are the ones I could figure out the best when drawing them.
A: When the anime actually aired we had a huge response. Fans would write to me on Twitter, and every time I uploaded a picture I would get a lot of reactions.
T: It was the first time that I had such a response, I was really surprised. I’m a fan of the baseball team Carp, and when I went to drink with my friends everyone knew “Yuri on Ice”. One person told me “a girl in my company watches it, she was praising it a lot”. It never happened to me so far!

-The biggest miracle is that all this staff could come together.-

A: Tatenaka-san also took part in the production of “ENDLESS NIGHT”, but this is the first time that we worked in the same space. I was really glad that he was there working in the same position as me. I can grumble about work (LOL), and he can understand me.
T: It’s really like that. Watching Abiko-san I realized that Yuuri must be difficult to animate because he changes a lot, and when I was working on long sequences he would leave me alone. And he would talk to me when I finished. Things like that.
A: I didn’t really do all that on purpose (LOL). But you really feel relieved (when there is someone else in your same position). There were also many other people around 40 years old, like the chief animation director Shishido-san, so we had things in common to talk about.
T: It’s really a miracle that all this staff could come together. I think it was a difficult job for everyone, from the colors to the backgrounds to all the rest, not just us. But they were all people who would do whatever they could. Everyone would always find something to do.
A: It would have been a problem if even one of them were missing. In difficult workplaces it happens that some people will get sick or leave, but this time it didn’t happen.
T: The production staff, who probably had the hardest time, was outstanding and did their best. They were all young, but when they brought you things to fix saying “I want to make this better” you couldn’t refuse.
A: Everyone got along well and even when they complained it was always jokingly. It was a really nice group.

snowley  asked:

I have a question- is a transformer "body" and "armor" separate or are they one piece? In movies it seemed a tranfromer has a basic body that it covers with an armor (the colorful part). In the comics or cartoon I'm not so sure but if I remember correctly in IDW comics Overlord was in some kind of tube and he was "naked", had some sort of robotic, thin body. So is the "armor" - the rest of the transformer - just like clothes or more like a bioarmor they can feel? Is this referenced anywhere?

As ever, such things tend to vary by continuity. There’s plenty of examples of a bit of a Transformer being removed, and all that’s revealed beneath is a basic mechanical skeletal structure of struts and wires that’s you couldn’t believe is ever supposed to be “exposed” at any time. In instances like these, human analogies aren’t perfect, but its probably best to think of a Transformer’s armor, or exoskeleton, as their “skin” which goes over their “skeleton” - not something, generally speaking, that they’re supposed to “take off.” Take a look at what’s going on inside Ironhide’s forearm, for instance:

Or these shots of a damaged Megatron from the Marvel comic - you can see there’s no “head” underneath his “helmet,” just internal robotic matter.

Protoforms from Beast Wars suggest something similar - a basic endoskeleton existed at the core of a protoform, but the substance of its outer body, well beyond simple armor, is formed from living liquid metal.  The protoforms seen in Transformers: Prime also follow this course - they formatted from featureless mannequins into exact replicas of Starscream, armor and all, all formed from the same living metal as if they were one body.

But you’re quite correct in also recalling an un-armored Overlord in the IDW comics, whose external armor was removed so his endoskeleton could be fused with indestructible ununtrium:

And even Transformers: Animated showed us that certain external parts of a Transformers body were armor that could be harmlessly and painlessly removed like “clothing” - witness helmet-less Bumblebee:

We would later seen that, although protoforms can be brought to life and given form, as seen here with Yoketron:

…in order to be “complete,” rather than this minimalist look, a protoform would have to be placed in a pre-existing “mold” that included certain key parts of the armour, into which it would then grow, filling out the rest of the body (this, then, explains shared body types among robots).

You raise the subject of movie ‘bots, and per the details given in the Transformers: The Movie Guide book, they seem to rather split the difference between these two ideas. For them, the protoform is the core body of the Transformer, but it generates the robot’s external armor (in accordance with the shape and colour, etc, of the alt mode) from both its own mass, and from any additional matter it can absorb and reformat into living metal.

Similar to that. the Transformers: Shattered Glass prose story “Blitzwing Bop” has noted that Cybertronian technomatter can accept replacement parts and repairs made using conventional metals, plastics, and circuits, because a Transformer’s biology is such that it will break down any such matter and convert it into living metal. It also feels like IDW concept of a spark’s “animating force" factors in here - that’s something that’s only come up in regards to Ultra Magnus, and his spark’s rare ability to animate the very large suit of armor that surrounds his body, but it makes it seems that we can’t think of it just as something that a Transformer “wears,” but something that is genuinely part of them, animated by their lifeforce

  • Honestly! There’s no need to feel insecure about your posts, spreads, handwriting, picture quality, stationary - everyone in the studyblr community is so sweet and positive and helpful I begin to feel spoiled. I hope you do to!
  • Don’t feel self conscious about anything. You’re beautiful, wonderful, and perfect just the way you are. There is no better you than you!
  • Stop comparing your posts and blog to other people’s. There’s a lot for you to learn, and it won’t all come immediately. Notes, followers - it takes time.

Reach out to other studyblrs!!

  • Say hi, send asks, make friends! Make comments on other’s posts, send compliments or help where you can. Just being active in the community can help you get attention but also give you a wonderful time. A studyblr is to help you grow, and this is a great way to keep you motivated in doing so.
  • Along the same line, try to find ways to interact with your followers!

Tags, Tags, Tags!

  • A lot of studyblrs will track a tag and will often reblog your content if you tag your original posts with it! You can find out what tag to put by checking out a studyblr’s page (for example, I track #studyfeather). You can make a list for yourself if that helps! (: But try not to be too overwhelming or overuse it. Maybe switch up which tracked tags you use from post to post.
  • Make a tag for you to track! It would make sense that if you’re using tracked tags to make one for yourself to spread the love.
  • Have a tag that is specific to your original content (mine is #featherpost)!!! It will make it nice and easy for those who come across your blog to find what you’re posting about. Having original content helps others have more interest in your blog!
  • A lot of what you are reblogging can serve as a resource for yourself. I like to reblog posts that inspire me, or have spreads I might try, masterposts, etc. If its important for you to find what you’re reblogging for later, make a tag system for yourself. For example, heres @ / studypetals’ tags page or @ / studyquill’s navigation page if you need any ideas. This is a great idea if other people begin using your blog as a resource as well.

Take advantage of all the information you see.

  • There are so many posts that address procrastination, time management, stress, note taking, school - anything at all - that is made available to you. It’s one thing to see the information, but it’s another to make use of it. (And don’t be afraid to share your knowledge either!) You can even make posts about trying out different advice if that helps motivate you to try something out.

Make an introductory post!

  • Help others get to know you better by putting together an introductory post! It’s never too late to make one, so don’t worry about making one if your blog has been up for a bit.
  • From what I’ve discovered, introductory posts tend to have the following information (not every one has ALL of this, it’s up to you what you’d like to add): name, age, school year, why you started a studyblr, your classes, some of your favorite studyblrs, other blogs you have (and other sites you’re on), any anything else you’d like to say/add.
  • If you use tracked tags or tag studyblrs you love, it can help get your blog noticed! (:

Post original content!

  • I touched on this earlier, but this is so important. One of the best ways for your studyblr to succeed is posting your own work and sharing it to the community. You never know how many people will love it, be inspired by it, follow you from it, or contact you because of it.
  • Be fairly consistent in posting original content. I try to post at least once a week even though I’m pretty busy. It helps motivate me to keep my bujo and studyblr going! You can try out the 100 days of productivity or some studyblrs put together monthly study challenges you can keep up with. As an example, here’s a May Study Challenge I might try out!
  • In posting original content, make sure you link information you’re referencing to help others that much more!

Queue your posts!!

  • A great way to keep your blog active is to queue your posts. I have my posts queued at 10 each day and try to keep at least 20 posts in my queue at all times, in case a couple of busy days keep me from adding more. Some people unfollow inactive blogs - and this can be a way to prevent it.
  • The only thing I don’t queue are original posts and asks, but it’s up to you if you decide to use the queue system or not!

➸ advice for a new bullet journalist

Real quick!! I would advise taking a look at the bullet journal’s official website to help understand the basics of bullet journaling.

  • It’s designed to be quick and customizable way for you to keep information and tasks organized. A great way to make use of this (that I’ve found) is to make a key for each of your logs. You can see my key here. You can also search tumblr for bujo keys to see what others have come up with. If you do want to make a key, make it so that it works for you!  It can be as simple or detailed as you want, with or without signifiers, etc. If you don’t like this system, that’s just fine!

Discover different journal options and where to find them.

  • There is no set journal to use, however there are popular choices among the studyblr community: Moleskine, Leuchtturm1917, and Muji journals - but it is NOT limited to these. Working with a regular notebook works just fine as well!
  • It’s one thing to find and purchase something online - but I like being able to find what I’m looking for in person. It saves shipping + handling costs, and I get to it immediately. And, sometimes, they can be cheaper too! I found my moleskine journal I’ve been using at Barnes and Noble, and have also seen Leuchtturm1917 journals at my school’s book store. (The temptation is real every time I walk past OTL)

Your bullet journal is for you, so let’s make it that way.

  • A big part of having a studyblr is to help yourself in becoming more productive in learning and improving a lifestyle (or this may just be how I see it). So! There is no set format for you to use a bullet journal. It’s up to you to figure out what works best for you.
  • You can take inspiration from other people’s post to help experiment with different spreads and layouts. (Be sure to credit/tag if you do! Just to be safe.)
  • You can find out different things that you can add to your bujo! Habit trackers, daily/weekly/monthly/yearly spreads, lists of things to keep track of (books to read, tv shows and episodes to watch, shopping/wish lists, bucket list, etc), anything you’re interested in. Depending on your interests and areas you wan’t to use a bujo to help you with, this can vary. If you want, you can test out different ideas to see if you like it or not. It will take time to find what you like, so don’t stress about it in the beginning. You’re just starting, after all!
  • There is always something for you to do, it’s just a matter of finding out what that is. If you need any help of finding something to do, feel free to message me! (As long as you don’t mind me asking a bunch of questions haha.)

Don’t be afraid to use pencil first when making your spreads.

  • Me being me, trusted myself to use pen right off the bat. Boy, do I regret that XD It got to the point where I purchased an erasable pen but I’m finding nothing can beat pencil before pen. But before you erase the pencil - make sure the pen has dried. I can’t stress this enough. I’ve gotten impatient multiple times and go ahead to erase, and instantly wished I hadn’t. You can try to find pens that prevent this from happening, but waiting is the best alternative. Something you can do is make a spread at night, and wait to erase when you wake up in the morning. You can keep your bujo open to the page you worked on for it to dry better.

You don’t need any fancy or expensive stationary.

  • Seeing the pastel highlighters, wide variety of pens and miscellaneous tools it’s easy to think you need to have it all but … you don’t have to have any of it. Especially if you are low on funds, don’t worry about getting anything new. Just work with what you have! I have been using pens I’ve owned for years and have hardly touched to see what I can do with them and am pleasantly surprised! I have a bunch of supplies that I have gotten for school that haven’t been used that I plan on finally putting to use.
  • Your basic school supplies with notebooks, highlighters, pens and pencils, post it notes, can take you as far as you wish!

Having a difficult time coming up with a spread? Here’s some ideas!

  • Try out different hand written fonts. This can include headers/titles and subheaders/subtitles. Try headers, banners, and dividers too! Here’s some different ideas: x | x | x | x
  • Give your spread a theme. Disney, movie, music, history, art, cartoon shows, books - anything at all! This can help with finding art to fill in blank spaces to give your spread some more interest. Here’s a post with a bunch of ideas you could use.
  • Colors! Try out different color combinations! Being an art student, I’m overly conscious of colors. They can help set a mood, evoke certain emotion, some colors work best with others (be smart when using complimentary colors), etc. Here’s a site that covers basic color theory. But … this is me being nerdy. This can take quite a bit of thought - but you honestly don’t have to (: !! It’s best if you stick to one or two colors within a page not to overwhelm what others are seeing, especially if you’re wanting to keep things minimal. If you want me to go deeper into this, and talk more about contrast and whatnot … I can make a separate post as not to clutter this one ♥
  • Make goals for yourself! This can be included in a habit tracker, but doesn’t need to be. They can be as small as going on a 20 minute walk each day during this week, being sure to stay hydrated, doing something with a family member or friend, completing or starting a big project or assignment, etc.
  • Find some quotes and add them! Here’s some quote masterposts I’ve come across: x | x | x | x

When taking pictures, be conscious of lighting.

  • The best kind of lighting is natural lighting. Taking pictures outside (or inside) during the day will help your image quality! I know before I said picture quality doesn’t matter much, but this can be a simple and easy way to help improve your posts.
  • If natural lighting isn’t helping you the way you want, you can take a look at different apps with photo editing capabilities or filters. I have a horrible app finding ability, and just use Photoshop (you can get PS CS2 for free here) or Clip Studio Paint to edit my photos. My favorite tool to use is the tone curve. However you can see this post to look at other options, like apps (it also links to other posts you can look at)!

Have a good time!

  • Honestly, I feel this is what it boils down to. As long as you are enjoying what you’re doing and continue to have a passion for studyblr related content, you’ll succeed. Don’t stress about it and take one post at a time.

I’ll start putting together a post of how I started my studyblr in case that may help as well! Thank you for asking, anon! Hopefully this helps, and that I was able to cover everything! T o T Sorry I kinda went on a bit of a tangent in some areas.

anonymous asked:

How about RFA+V and Saeran react to MC completely disappearing once Rika comes back and everyone ignores MC. Like she was replaced by Rika, and the last thing they saw of her was "MC has left the chatroom"

I’m gonna format this different than usual, just because this is… Gosh this is a really good ask, and I want to answer it in a good way too, but the usual way just doesn’t seem to suit it, so.. heheh, I hope you guys like this format Note: The reactions are all connected, I suggest reading it in order as I wrote it to make the best sense!! ^^

To begin with, there was a lot of “Rika..? Where have you been??” “We thought you were dead” “How.. how are you back?”
You were amazed too. But you felt forgotten in the excitement, no one answered you, they all acted like… Rika replaced you. As if now that she was there, you… were not. You understood at first, sure. They were all excited that Rika was back. Makes sense. But this lasted for a few days… They wouldn’t join in chatrooms with you anymore, they had just left you. You attempted one last time to get their attention.

-Hey.. guys?
-I guess you’re all busy…
-….
-Haha.. that seems to be all the time now ^^;;
-You’re all really busy….;;
-I guess I’m just a bother, aren’t I?
-…..
-I’m sorry
-MC has left the chatroom-

Yoosung

At first, he was still caught up in the excitement. Rika, enticing as ever, held his attention. He at first played off your chat as a bad day, on your part. But then… you stopped coming to the chats at all. He realized it one day when he was thinking about you. He stopped in the chats and asked if anyone else had noticed.
No one quite knew… when you were last on. Rika tried to say to brush it off. “She’ll come back sometime. I’m sure!! Don’t worry!”
Yoosung looked back to find the chat anyways. It worried him.. what you said sounded so definitive. As if you planned to leave, for good.
So he consulted Seven. “Where’s MC? Why hasn’t she been here?”
“I… I haven’t been able to find them… They deleted the app, and then they just completely disappeared.”
“Why didn’t you tell us sooner??”
“I tried. No one would listen.”
Yoosung didn’t want to believe Seven, but looking back at the chats… he saw it was true. Anything about you, everyone just brushed aside. It seemed only Seven tried to bring you up, before he too, gave up.
“When did you last see MC?”
“She left her home, and disappeared from the city…”
“There has to be clues at her home… what’s her address?”
He recorded it as Seven told him, then went out on a drive, driving through the neighborhood you resided in, scouring the houses for your address.

Jaehee

“What do you mean.. MC’s gone?”
She hadn’t noticed it either that you were gone gone, until Yoosung brought up the chat with Seven about your disappearance.
“They can’t just… be gone. Can they..?”
“Jaehee, I know you were close to them..” Yoosung started, “do you know anything about where they might have gone? Could they be hiding something at home about where they went?”
“I… Maybe, but… I never really saw them outside of club activities, only a couple times..”
“Come with me then. We have to check her home for anything, any clues.”
“Okay”
That’s how the two of them ended up at your porch, first knocking the door to see if you were maybe just at home. There was always the chance, and Jaehee didn’t want to ‘break in’ if it was unnecessary, because it after all, was your home.
“Let’s go in” Yoosung said after waiting a minute.
“Wait– hold up, they might just be coming.”
Yoosung huffed, but Jaehee stubbornly made them wait five more minutes. “Fine, we can go in.”
They found the place clean. Not just clean, but to a point of… barrenness. It felt empty. Lifeless.
“You’d think there’d be signs of them actually living here…” Yoosung murmured.
“Maybe that’s the point…” Jaehee said. She wandered through the house, into a bedroom. It too felt empty, with a bed, an empty nightstand, and a desk. The desk appeared empty, but she checked the drawers, and found a notebook. She remembered this from times hanging out with you, you kept notes in this… it was kind of like your planner/diary/notes all blended together.
“This should have something.”

Zen

He saw the chat when he woke up in the morning. “What’s going on? MC… is missing?”
He didn’t quite believe it.
Scratch that– he didn’t want to believe it.
But he couldn’t deny how they all were ignoring you. He couldn’t help wondering if that’s what drove you to leave, the fact that everyone ignored you. Or was it something more…?
“Guys, why is everyone so worried..?” Rika chimed in on the chat. “They’ll be fine, they’re probably just taking a break. It can be kind of stressful leading the RFA, I would know!! ^^”
“But why would they just disappear?” Zen asked. “Shouldn’t they have given us some kind of warning?”
“Just give them space, they’ll be fine.”
He noticed how Rika had little concern about you, and sure it made some sense.. she didn’t really know you. Call it paranoid, but he was skeptical about her “it’s fine” act. In a moment of rogue thought, he wondered if Rika had anything to do with your disappearance.
That… couldn’t be possible though. It’s Rika– he knows her. She wouldn’t do something like this.
But then again.. the Rika he last knew was from at least four years ago. The details around her ‘death’ and return were vague, and V and her were shrouded in secrets. Thinking more about it, Zen felt less and less sure that Rika wasn’t involved.

Jumin

“Let me see what you found.”
“It isn’t much, but..” Jaehee drew out a notebook from her bag. “This is it, Mr. Han. It took me forever to convince Yoosung to let me take it, but it’s their notebook. I found it in their drawer. I thought that this might be of some help…”
She opened to a page and showed it to Jumin, revealing a page of a scribbled-down conversation. Little notes labelled one side as you, the other side as someone going by Unknown.
“Isn’t Unknown..?”
“Yes, Unknown is the one who lead MC to the apartment in the first place. I didn’t realize they had been talking with each other…”
Jumin looked closer at the conversation. It talked about plans, how you needed to leave, needed help leaving. Needed to know how to disappear, so even Seven couldn’t find you.
“Why was MC planning this? And why would they go to this Unknown to do it?” He hesitates. “Jaehee, find out more about this for me. Consult Seven maybe, leave the notebook with me. I’ll continue looking through it.”
Jaehee bites her lip, but doesn’t protest before heading off.
Jumin starts looking through your notebook, and finds the first day you met the RFA.
MC was so happy… He remmebers fondly, and starts scanning through more.
-Could I really be more than Rika for them? Can I just become me and mean the same to them?
-I really think I can.

The memories go bittersweet as he realizes how quickly they tossed you to the wind after Rika came back.
-Unknown got a hold of me on the app… he messaged me again. I think.. there’s a reason he’s back. It might be for the best to have him help me.
MC… Jumin worries, are you with this unknown right now?

Seven

“Seven, you’re saying you don’t know how to handle Unknown? How he did all of this?”
“I– I told you. I can’t figure out how they do it, but they always seem to be one step ahead. I’ll call if I can figure out more. I have to go.”
Rika had to peep in a final word, “It’ll be fine. MC’s probably just on vacation or something~”
He left the chat with Jaehee, and started scouring the computer again. His eyes hung open sleeplessly, his fingers were cramped from working on the computer for so long, but he couldn’t find you. He couldn’t find any sign of you. And he just didn’t understand it.
Hearing that you worked with the Unknown to disappear, it started making sense why he couldn’t find you. The Unknown seemed to be on the same level if not more advanced than him of hacking, he could easily help you disappear without a trace online.
The only clues left were what was left in your house, which meant your notebook…
Seven couldn’t help but feel like he failed you.
He should’ve been able to stop this. He should’ve been able to keep you there, with them. It must’ve been his fault. He failed to protect you from whatever drove you to Unknown for help. Perhaps he even failed to protect you from Unknown.
His phone buzzed. A message from Rika. “It’ll be okay, okay Seven? You’ll see, things will go back to normal. The way they were. It’ll be all better with time.”
Frustrated, Seven chucked his phone across the room. It clashed in the trash of Dr. Pepper cans and Honey Buddha Chip bags, all empty. He hadn’t had a proper meal since he saw you deleted the app. He hadn’t ate since his stash of pop and chips ran out… two days ago.
His stomach rumbled.
But he decided he wasn’t hungry, and continued typing at the computer.

Saeran

“Are you sure about this?” He asked.
“Yeah,” you said, nodding. “Give them this after I’m gone. And.. thanks, for helping me. You know you didn’t have to.”
Saeran grunted.
“Shut up. Just get out of here, before I hack into the chat and spoil your plans.”
You smiled half-heartedly. “I.. don’t think they’d worry too much over me, even if you did message them. Just.. keep an eye on (insert-your-fave-mm-charrie) for me, okay..?”
He shifted his eyes. “ ‘kay.”
He watched you go, holding himself back from saying anything more…
I’m sorry.

V

He watched the RFA’s panic as they realized you disappeared.
He didn’t want to intrude on it.
Even if it pained him.
He sat back and watched.
The buzz and the worry over you went on for a few months.
Yoosung clung onto it like he clung on to Rika’s death.
Jaehee lost motivation in anything but work.
Zen kept on face, looking like he was fine while reeking of vodka.
Jumin invested himself heavily in the company, losing himself in it.
Seven rarely was online, but when he was, reassuring everyone he was doing his best to find you.
The RFA as it once was lost it’s enthusiam.
Rika started working hard to build it back up.

The message was supposed to be given out to the rest of the RFA after he received it. It appeared anonymously in the mail one wintry day.
He consulted Rika about it however, before even considering sharing it.
She told him to burn it. Don’t leave it to be discovered, get rid of it before someone like Seven gets a hold of it.
He couldn’t bring himself to burn it. He felt too guilty to.
So he hid it away, in a box locked up and tucked away on a shelf, where it would gather dust and be forgotten about.
It was like the memory of you, just as Rika hoped it would be.
Tucked up on a shelf, left to gather dust and be forgotten about.

HOW TO STUDY FOR THE ACT

And now finally, after 495803493 years (okay it was four-ish weeks), I am back with a new post! This one tackles one of the woes of a student’s existence: the ACT. It’s standardized testing season again so I thought I would share some of my studying tips and advice that will hopefully help you improve your scores!

1) GET A PREP BOOK

This is really, really important. Buy a prep book or borrow one from the library. I believe there’s even a post here that has some online versions. You may be thinking “Nah, I got this.” but it’s not that simple. I personally don’t know anyone who’s scored really well on their first try. Most people have taken the ACT multiple times in order to reach their desired score. Most if not all of those times were with intensive studying. It’s extremely hard (not impossible) to get a top score on your first try. Don’t waste your time and money, get a prep book. I don’t know much about ACT classes because I’ve never taken one but I’ve done just fine without one and so have many of my friends. I know they can be very expensive and I don’t know how worth it they are. It depends on you as a person and your learning style. I personally would recommend the prep book. My choices are

  • Princeton Review’s ACT (The Newest Edition if possible because they changed the test)
  • Princeton Review’s ACT Elite 36 (If you’re looking to nail those last few points to get a top score)

Now I have only used Princeton Review. I have no experience with any other review materials so I can’t say how good they are. But, in my studying, I found Princeton Review to be very helpful. Their explanations were clear and concise, they had a little bit of humor thrown in, and their practice tests were pretty close to the real thing. Plus, their testing strategies were on point. I strongly recommend them.

2) MAKE A STUDYING SCHEDULE

Be organized. It’s going to make a huge difference in your preparedness. School and extracurriculars are hectic enough as it is and it’s going to be hard to find time to study. If you just say “I’m going to study when I have time” or “I’ll do it later” you’re most likely not going to get anything done.

  • First: How much time do you have until the test? Ideally, you want to start studying a month or two before the test. This will allow you to learn all the strategies and take a sufficient amount of practice tests. But if you have a week before the exam, fear not! Although not ideal, If you’re organized you’ll study enough to do well. Once you’ve determined the days/months you have to study,
  • Make a study schedule. Plan out exactly how much time each day you’ll dedicate to studying for the ACT. I know things happen and you’re schedule can change, but you should be pretty aware of when you have free time. The amount of time you dedicate per day is up to you, but I would suggest at least a half hour per day (with more if you’re taking a practice test). If you have more time to study, you can devote less time whereas if you have less time to study, you want to devote more time. Again, it’s up to you.
  • Stick to the schedule! Don’t procrastinate. When it comes time to study, study. Put away all distractions and focus. You’ll get more out of your studying sessions if you’re more focused versus being distracted and checking tumblr every five minutes.

3) LEARN THE TECHNIQUES

Believe it or not, there are strategies to approaching each part of the test. This is where the prep book comes in. The prep book details all of these strategies in detail and gives you examples. These strategies usually work! They help you approach the sections in the right way in order to maximize your time and minimize your errors. Learn them well. Some say to focus on your weak spots and ignore your strengths when doing this. It’s up to you, but I disagree. I think spending time evenly on all the sections will maximize your score. But definitely don’t ignore your weakness. They will bring a really good score to a mediocre one.

4) TAKE PRACTICE TESTS

No matter what you do, don’t skip this part. Even if you refuse to learn any strategies, take practice tests. It’s the best way to get a feel for the test and to see the format. Don’t show up on test day not knowing anything, or very little, about the format and types of questions. It will bring down your score. Take at least 3 timed practice tests, where you sit down as if it were the real thing and take the whole test in one sitting. These practice tests (although not the best indicators of your score) will indicate the range of scores you’re in. If you did learn techniques, and even if you didn’t, the practice tests are the place to see what techniques need polishing/what you need to work on (this includes the essays!).

5) WHAT TO DO ON TEST DAY

Have your registration ticket, number 2 pencils (I usually go with four just in case), an eraser that works, a calculator FULLY CHARGED OR WITH NEW BATTERIES, your ID, a water bottle, a snack for during breaks, and a jacket if you think you’ll need one. The night before is up to you. Numerous places say to relax and “watch a movie” but again, like so much of this test, it’s up to you. If you feel confident in your abilities, feel free to watch a movie. If you’re slightly unsure, go over the areas you’re uncertain about. I always study the night before and it works for me. Usually I take a practice test or two and see how well I do, and I go over weak spots. Regardless of what you choose to do, get a good night’s sleep. The next morning, eat a good breakfast - something you know will last you four hours. In the testing room, turn off your cellphone and double check to make sure it’s off. You wouldn’t want to invalidate your scores because you left your phone on vibrate and your best friend called you in the middle of the test. And last but not least, be CONFIDENT! You’ve got this! You’ve studied for months/weeks/days and you know your stuff inside out! No matter what happens, you’re going to ace the test! Don’t let the pressure get to you! Be calm and focused and you’ll do well!

I hope this post was helpful and that you all improve your scores (or get really good ones on the first try!). Let me know if you have any questions and good luck!

A/N: Part one of my Rugby!Kook fic. Totally not inspired by imagining Jungkook in a rugby uniform. Nope. Not at all. (And a try is one of the ways to score in rugby. Heh, I’m punny.)

Part 2

When Yoongi first asks you to help him photograph the university’s rugby team, you are reluctant at best. Your knowledge of the sport extends to that it somewhat resembled football but with significantly less padding. Even then, your notions probably aren’t very accurate. Furthermore, you aren’t very keen on spending time in the sun taking pictures of sweaty guys tackling each other, no matter how “fit” your friends say they are. The same friends had convinced (read: forced) you to take the job with Yoongi, with promises of a free ice cream and dinner some time down the line.

You slightly warm up to the job when Yoongi introduces you to one of the players and his good friend, Park Jimin. They are about the same height but if they weren’t standing next to each other, you wouldn’t have known. Jimin is more muscular, all his rugby workouts showing in his bulging muscles that are noticeable even through his his t-shirt and jeans. He’s sweet, with an almost blinding smiling and a presence that warmed the room. You find yourself thinking that this gig wouldn’t be so bad as you laugh at one of his jokes over fries.

You warm up a lot once you meet the rest of the team. Or more accurately, once you see the team in uniform. More specifically, when you see Jeon Jungkook in uniform. God damn.

It had completely slipped your mind that your cute, soft spoken photography classmate was on the team, even though you’ve seen him wearing his team jacket in class. Every time you looked at him you were too busy staring at his face rather than focusing on what sports team he played on.

Camels In Australia

Professor Ω5-029′s lectures were always packed. People from all across the campus, planet and galaxy came to their lectures, both organics and machines, both present and digitally.

The professor walked up to the stage, its six metallic legs efficiently climbing onto the stairs. It walked through the holographic screen, and began pointing at a map of the galaxy.

“Today’s lecture we will be focusing on this little blue and yellow ball right here. 45.2-3″ the professor said and the entire lecture hall cheered. The professor was the best expert on the newly discovered life-filled planet.

“Specifically, we begin in this landmass on the southern end of the planet’s rotation. Today it is connected to the rest of the landmass through this elevated region right here, but our models of 45.2-3′s past show that as late as 300,000 years ago, this wasn’t the case. The entire landmass was isolated from its neighbors through waters that required advanced shipping technology in order to traverse.”

“And yet…” the professor pointed at a location in the corner of the hologram. The image zoomed and moved into the center. A large four-legged furry animal with big jaws and three humps was seen. “The ancestors of the Amberois Calutalus, or the Camel as the media has been calling it, have been able to cross this gap with ease. Their descendants still walk the many deserts of 45.2-3 to this day.”

“Professor, are you saying the Calutalus used to be intelligent?”

“Most certainly. We’ve known for a long time that 45.2-3 used to house intelligent species. From the layers of artificial plastics found in rock formations as late as 1,000,000 years ago, to the spread of different animals across oceans they couldn’t have possible crossed on their own, to the radioactive isotopes that suggest nuclear fission plants, it was obvious.” the professor continued to show pictures of the planet’s rocky layers and many diverse deserts.

“However, it was only recently that we discovered for certain that the Calutalus were the species that built all these wonders. From the remnants of what we suspect were ancient Camel villages and roads, we found wide-rimmed passages perfectly designed for the slow crawl of the Calutalus.”

“And of course, the final piece of the puzzle.” the professor pointed to a picture of a black rock. “This rock was the powerful fuel through which the Camels transformed their planet into a paradise. They used this to pump the atmosphere with greenhouse gasses, raising the planet’s temperature. They chopped entire forests and destroyed fertile soil which managed to kill off all of the many jungles and grasslands that were in their way.”

The professor showed an animation detailing the expanding deserts of the planet. “They succeeded in expanding their home desert to the entire planet. After which, their work was done, and their descendants could live in peace in the desert they created for millions of years to come.”

The entire lecture hall clapped, but one organic student raised their arms. “But professor, wouldn’t it be possible that 45.2-3′s desertification was an accident, caused perhaps by another species?”

“That’s a good question, but we’ve already ruled it out. No species smart enough to land vehicles on their moon would be stupid enough to transform their entire planet into a desert if deserts weren’t their natural environment.”

How to Create a Comic - Tutorial Section I

(I’m making this since it was requested of me by @cat-astrophye, so I hope it is interesting for anyone else that wants to learn more.)

First of all, I want to preface this with the disclosure that I am not a professional. I do have some education and experience in art, but my knowledge of the comic process is through reading several books and websites (including other comics/manga), watching many videos on the subject, and my own trial and error. I will do my best to cover the majority of information that is important, but be aware that there could be details or steps I may miss, or techniques that others are aware of that I do not cover. This tutorial will also be quite long so I am making it into a series. I hope my instructions are helpful in teaching others about some of the process that goes into creating sequential art and comics.

Let’s get to work!

Broduce 101: Episode 6 (Quick Livestream Recap)

Contains spoilers.

  • Jihoon leads the trainees’ greeting to BoA, quick recap of rankings and eliminations last ep
  • All of them has started looking a lot more polished, the stylists must have more time with fewer trainees to focus on
  • Voting after the next mission rankings eliminate all trainees after rank 35
  • Position rankings!
  • Four songs for rap, dance, vocal. BoA’s Amazing Kiss is there too. Team picks by rank, of course
  • Ong-ssi doesn’t want Hyunbin on his dance team and Hyunbin says he doesn’t want to dance anyway
  • Samuel’s blond is really not a flattering shade, he looks so much nicer with darker hair. He didn’t want to be on the same team as Jihoon, who is likely to get the highest votes and edge out his teammates but they both picked Jason Derulo’s Get Ugly
  • So did Ahn Hyungseob
  • And Kang Daniel
  • And Ong ssi
  • Rekt.
  • They’re all feeling the stacked team burden, but Samuel and Hyungseob specially lol
  • Jisung picks IOI’s Downpour for vocal but isn’t very confident
  • The lower ranking trainees groan as the teams and songs they want get filled up
  • Woodam has to dance, he’s disappointed he can’t sing and cries because he wanted to use his advantage to its fullest :(
  • Everyone is worried about the Playing with Fire team w/ Sewoon, Baekho, Daehwi and Minki, who have the most potential to shake things up
  • Daehwi is made to look a bit scared of sang namja Baekho, specially considering their friction over the Boy in Love doubling
  • Sewoon aka CEO-nim is leader for their team, and Baekho wants to be main vocal.
  • Daehwi bows out, since everyone tore the teenager down for being a teenager last few episodes. His dark hair is a good look on him.
  • They’re not a team that has a lot in common, they’re a bit hesitant with each other. Even I can see the awkward air, editing aside.
  • Sewoon gets some screentime with lowkey friction with Baekho because they clash over the direction they want to take the cover.
  • Daehwi gets even more nervous
  • Im Youngmin picked Boys and Girls with Donghyun but they don’t look pleased.
  • It’s actually because Kim Dongbin picked the song too.
  • He apologises because he at least is aware of his lack of skills but is apparently a rapper trainee. The BNM kids aren’t sure what to do, since they’ve clearly trained long and well unlike him, but they try to help
  • Vocal kings Joo Jinwoo and Kim Seunglee battle it out for main vocal in their vocal team
  • Kim Seunglee gets centre because his teammates share my opinion about his voice being lovely and yet somehow distinct
  • The team only has Yehyun who knows music theory so he takes the lead arranging the cover
  • Kim Yongguk finally gets his screentime because he misses his fellow trainee, who left early on. No one even knows he’s a singer, they’re never heard his voice but he sings and they’re impressed because it sounds melancholy and sweet
  • Tiptoe Oppa Park Sungwoo picked a dance team
  • All the trainees pull the most meme faces when he enters with Shape of You as his pick. Daniel’s is particularly meme worthy.
  • Noh Taehyun is worried, he didn’t want to have to coach anyone but he enters with the Shape of You card
  • Bright eyed Park Sungwoo waits for him with the same song and he sighs, knowing where this is going.
  • He gets picked as leader for their team too, which is a good choice.
  • The team compete with their expressions to pick centre and they all pick Noh Taehyun for this too
  • He carried the double sticker load well, quickly choreographing and coaching his team. A good edit for this boy after ages.
  • Moonbok, Lai Guanlin, Taemin, Jonghyun (who of course is leader) are doing Mino’s Fear
  • Lai Guanlin wants to be centre and raps in English. His flow is actually better when not in Korean. His team lets him write lyrics in English to up his skills
  • He edges out the good natured Moonbok, who did want the position since his rank’s been dropping but acknowledges Guanlin is cooler.
  • Blame your hyungs, Hip Hop President
  • Hong Eunki is leader for Right Round dance team, he wants to replicate the Bang Bang effect
  • Haknyeon vs Hwanwoong for centre, but shockingly Hwanwoong gets centre because they’re not sure if they’ve ever seen Haknyeon’s skills
  • It makes him do a Kwon Hyunbin because he’s disappointed, making a lot of mistakes
  • Smiley Eunki pushes through, but this isn’t making Haknyeon look great
  • Cut to performance day!
  • Random audience member: Kang Daniel is TOO sexy!
  • Super Junior Leeteuk is MC because BoA’s busy. The crowd are shook. He’s a seasoned MC but I like my nervous SM queen :(
  • BoA drops in unannounced during rehearsals and summons the boys, who all run to come see her. She tells them in person she won’t be able to be there in person for their second live performances, so asks for a run through of their stages
  • Vocal performances have a live band! That’s really cool, I’m impressed Mnet.
  • If it is You Team has Yongguk played up a lot this episode, maybe because of his off screen popularity despite his screentime? He gets a lot of love and support from his team to boost his confidence awwww
  • The power of friendship makes his voice stronger (or, just, you know, singing a song in his range). Coach Lee Seokhoon compliments his tone, says it’s innocent like a middle schooler, which is exactly what I thought. It’s very pure, for some reason
  • RBW Lee Gunhee cries everytime he sings
  • Everyone is shook by how pretty his voice his, it’s so emotive, and this song helps bring it out.
  • I’ll cover performances at length in their own dedicated post, but let it be known that they were all really good. A mix of strong vocalists, and the song suits them to a T.
  • Yehyun<Jinwoo<Seunglee<Yongguk for rankings. Arctic Fox powers up!
  • Dance team’s Flo Rida’s Right Round is up
  • They had behind the scenes issues with Haknyeon messing up and forgetting his moves. He really wanted centre because he didn’t get a chance to have many parts last time too, and he thinks Eunki has too many prominent parts despite not being centre
  • Kahi calls them out for letting teamwork issues spoil their performance.
  • Haknyeon and Eunki have a talk. Jeju boy wants to stand out because he’s worried about his fall in ranks, he cries and Eunki reassures him. They talk and make up and of course, their performance improves instantly
  • Briefly: I didn’t know Namhyung was going to be on this team, Hyunbin does his K-Tigers thing, Yoo Hwiseung does a lip swipe, Haknyeon gets his moment to shine. It starts off okay, gets underwhelming but picks up towards the end. Pretty average.
  • I can’t stop getting distracted by Chungha in the audience
  • Hwiseung looks good with his hair up. He flaps his hands as they wait for the result, just like he did last time. He’s growing on me, this cutie.
  • Namhyung<Hwiseung<Hyunbin<Eunki<Haknyeon
  • Zico’s Boys and Girls is up for Rap evals
  • BNM feel the burden of their label, and do well at practice
  • Dongbin can’t rap even reading the lyrics in front of him. Cheetah can’t take it.
  • His teammates are getting frustrated but want him to just have confidence and try. He cries again, of course, but his teammates support him with more patience than I have even just watching this
  • In brief: BNM hard carry the whole performance, Youngmin forgets a bit of his lyrics and they play it up far too much. Dongbin sounds out of breath the whole time and flat. Donghyun gets no attention for being consistently good. Underwhelming, all in all.
  • Dongbin<Donghyun<Youngmin for rankings. Youngmin cries out of guilt.
  • Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You for Dance evals
  • Dance battle in rehearsals
  • Park Woojin kills it
  • Eunki does some more of his booty popping
  • Samuel and Ong-ssi do their thing
  • Noh Taehyun’s krumping makes all the trainees starry eyed, they think he’s the best dancer
  • His team…is lagging, Kahi says the choreo doesn’t suit the music
  • Noh Taehyun redoes chunks of choreo for sake of the performances
  • In brief: Noh Taehyun did good leading the team. They all look good, and it’s a neat little routine with a few impressive formations to make it look complex. I can’t wait for the fancams. I think this looks to be one of the best performances.
  • THEY GET AN ENCORE CHANT
  • Chungha shows her approval
  • They all get startled by the screen countdown in the waiting room, screaming when it pops up lol
  • Sungwoo<Junwoo<Donghan<Justin<Taedong<Taehyun for rankings.
  • Rise my boy Taehyun! Finally a voting that’s fair
  • Song Mino’s Fear for Rap evals. This was Lai Guanlin’s segment.
  • Oh god. Fire whoever did Moonbok’s hair. Awful.
  • SUNG HYUNWOO IS IN THE CROWD WITH A MOONBOK BANNER MY HEART
  • You’re so cruel, Mnet, really.
  • Lol Don Mills calls Lai Guanlin baby chick rapper.
  • Baby chick rapper is scared of performing in front of the teachers
  • They only critique his pronunciation. I guess he’s better at being a swaggy rapper than he is at dancing or singing
  • Nation’s Leader Jonghyun makes him practice his Korean pronunciation with a pen between his teeth, which is cute but is also a very good elocution trick. It helps him.
  • Angel Jonghyun, of course.
  • Moonbok dedicates his bit to Hyunwoo, hold me, I’m in tears
  • In brief: Lai Guanlin looks like a real idol, and he’s not terrible. He has some sort of untrained talent there. Jonghyun references his Nu’est days and we get shots of his members and Kahi. Taemin has a nice rapping tone, I wasn’t expecting that. Moonbok’s emotions bleeds into his rap and he gives Hyunwoo a shoutout.
  • They both cry NOOOOOOOOOOOOO STOP THIS YOU TWO
  • Jonghyun made a tiny mistake that not even Mnet’s editing played up and cries
  • Moonbok<Taemin<Guanlin<Jonghyun. Jonghyun cries again out of guilt.
  • Blackpink’s Playing with Fire for vocal evals.
  • Oh, the boys look fine. The crowd goes wild, obviously agreeing. The voting for this one is going to be close.
  • Behind the scenes, they’re going for a band sound that they explain with too many technical details. Lee Seokhoon isn’t sure.
  • Sewoon suggests an acoustic route, different from what Baekho said.
  • Much tense editing, and they go for acoustics. I mean, they love Busker Busker in SK, so it’s not a shock
  • Sewoon feels he needs his guitar to stand along his teammates on stage
  • They talk and come to an amiable agreement.
  • Daehwi’s look here is really fire emoji, he looks his age, but also more like an idol.
  • In brief: I’d like the original song if it sounded more like this. I can’t resist a bit of electric guitar and a gentle pop rock sound. Daehwi throws some confetti. Minki pull his idol persona out while Baekho and Sewoon sing their hearts out. They do a nice bit of showmanship. The synth in the back is too loud, but I’ll discuss that in in depth analyses. A good performance, all in all.
  • Minki<Daehwi<Baekho<Sewoon. He doesn’t expect it and feels bad for his groupmates.
  • Preview for stacked team for Jason Derulo’s Get Ugly. Next week is going to be a Mess.
  • Shockingly, rankings changed up. I’ll put this bit under a read more.

Writer’s Block 4.1

So I’m taking a different approach to finishing this story. Instead of writing a monster chapter, it’s easier for me to do chunks of it at the moment. I’ll post every 2000 words here, and when it’s complete I’ll post it as one continuous chapter on the archives. Just seems easier for me. Hope you like this one! 4.2 isn’t far behind… Let me know what you think!

I toss the book aside and try to forget about the alien species commingling with human women as they take over the world with their disappearing magic lube, never-ending sexual appetite and nanocytes that heal the bruises they leave behind from their love-making. If it can be called that.

None of that garbage is going to help me write the next scene. The scene. The one I have zero experience with. Every time I sit down to write it I get nervous and edgy. But I need something written down that at least Peeta can make changes to. He won’t be much help to me this week since he’s busy finishing up an art project that’s due at the same time. I told him not to worry, that I would wrap things up on this end so he could focus elsewhere.

|All Cause of the Rush|~ONESHOT

GROUP: MONSTA X

GENRE: Smut, Action

LENGTH: 5.6K

I stood in the middle of a crowded room, barely listening the man in front of me drone on and on about his various stocks and the great success of the company he inherited from his father. He had to be in his late 20s, maybe early 30’s, definitely older than me but more childish by far.  All he could do was go on and on about his accomplishments, boasting in front of the lady on his arm, in hopes of impressing her. What he didn’t notice was that the little gold digger on his arm was eyeing me like a piece of meat from the moment I began speaking to her insufferable partner. I heard a voice crackle through the headset, although I was barely able to pick it up due to most of my attention being on the man in front of me.

“Excuse me Mr. Kim” I interrupted in my most polite voice.

He raised an eyebrow, signalling for me to continue.

“My speech for the banquet is up next and I would hate to miss it. Shall we continue this later?”.

He nodded eagerly, clapping a hand on my shoulder.

“Your name honey, we didn’t catch it?” the woman on his arm said in a very high pitched tone.

I gave a small smirk, accompanied with a small bow even though personally, I detested the high class women I came across.

“Wonho, darling”.

She giggled while I straightened my spine, giving a curt nod to the man before moving towards the grand stairs of the banquet hall.

“Hope to see you around!” She called to my retreating form.

I turned my head, giving her a quick wink before I continued my journey toward the grand staircase. When I was sure everyone was preoccupied with the frivolous endeavours of wealthy life, I made my way to the hallway leading to a back staircase. I pressed the headset into my ear, making sure I could hear clearly while dropping all polite mannerisms.

“What?” I harshly whispered into the receiver.

“Police are coming. Hyungs, we gotta go”.

Audio Drama Podcast Recs

Because I’ve gotten a few questions over time about podcast recs, both from people who are curious about audio drama, and fellow denizens of Podcast Hell™ who need something new, I wanted to put together this list so I could go a bit more into detail about why I love and recommend each of these amazing audio dramas.

Rather than trying to rank them, I tried to organize this list roughly based on popularity, at least based on my dash! More well-known shows are listed first, and then my faves that I don’t see getting nearly the love that they deserve. Especially with the volume of new innovative audio drama being created, there’s some really good stuff out there not getting nearly enough attention. Which is not to say that, if you’re a new podcast fan, you have to start with the most popular – but those shows are more likely to have an active fandom. (Of course, there are a ton of great podcasts out there, and plenty (both popular and obscure) that I don’t listen to yet.)

ML Fan Fic Rec/Appreciation List

Hi! Hello! I thought this might be the best way to show love for my fellow fan fiction writers in the ML community on this the day of appreciation for such folks. I’ve posted about the majority of these authors before in a blog rec list, but I want to put out a formal review of each author and their fics because reviews are important. There are so many fic rec lists out already, but writer types NEVER tire of attention (trust me, I know) so here we go (in alphabetical order to keep things classy and neat):

A Brand New Dawn by @whitebear-ofthe-watertribe

A lovely university AU. I love the way she writes Adrien and Marinette’s rekindled friendship, it’s just so warm and comforting. There is drama and fluff and romance and it’s just such lovely story. Also, her description of high fashion clothing is just #writing goals 100%.

A Werecat in London by  @i-am-thornqueen

An exciting expanded magical world AU.  This world that Thorn has created is just so rich and detailed and could easily stand on its own entirely. Adrien, Marinette and the whole crew drop so easily right into the middle of it and meld perfectly. Her OCs are beautifully developed characters and stand wonderfully on their own two feet, I could honestly read a whole book just following them. It’s full of action, angst, hilarity and Sin™.

Bare Necessities by @reyxa

An adorable art school AU where Adrien ends up as a nude model in Mari’s figure drawing class. Need I say more? Hilarity and adorable drawing sessions and art lessons ensue. This fic is pure and unaltered cotton candy and Reyxa does a wonderful job spinning it while throwing some Sin™ on top for good measure.

Black Cats And Curtain Calls by @bullysquadess

An extremely accurate theatre AU.  The first,  but not the only, Bully fic on the list. (Honestly I had to stop myself from putting them all down.) This short and sweet fic is hilarious and if you were/are a Theatre kid you will appreciate ever inch of it. Bully will capture you every time with her tongue –in-cheek humor and spot on characterization and this little fic is no exception.

Chasing the C/h/atwalk by @runningoutofink

A perfectly done Project Runway AU. Bee just does an absolutely phenomenal job translating the classic reality competition TV show format into the written word which is no small task. One of the things that impressed me most about this writing is that I could visualize every single scene perfectly. It is clearly and beautifully written and honestly made me fall deeper in love with the cast of ML.

Heartstrings by @seiyakanie

The beginning of the end for me and ML fics. This fic took my ML fic virginity and I have never looked back. If there is one thing Taylor knows how to write its Sin™ and luckily for us she knows how to write more than that. I love, love Taylor’s descriptions of actions and the thoughts and feelings of characters while they’re in the middle of those actions. (I also have this fic to thank for plunging me into the depths of Taylor’s OC heaven. Seriously, the girl has an armory full of AMAZING OCs, go check them out.)

Inking Indigo by @matchaball

An exquisite tattoo/soul mate/flower shop AU. I just…I will never be able to stop talking about Matchaball’s writing. Her prose reads like poetry and in some spots like a song. It has rhythm and grace and leads you slowly and easily through the world she’s creating. It can be a hard feat to find an author who not only writes beautifully but also has the world building, plotting and characterizing skills. Matchaball has all of these and more. Reading her writing is just so lovely and relaxing. I just cannot get enough.

Lady and the Tom Cat by @skaylanphear

I think technically this would be a mating cycle AU? It doesn’t matter because it’s FANTASTIC and I am just so pumped to see where it goes. Written by the fantastic Kay, how could you go wrong?  I will expand more on how much I love Kay’s writing in a bit, but I’ll just say I’m so pumped to see her write some sexier things because I know it will be done RIGHT. Jump on this train, it’s going places.

Pick Up and Chase by @skaylanphear

If you’d like to see Adrien embarrassed and stuttering for once, this is the fic for you. I cannot even begin with the level of cheese that Kay has going on in this fic, but it is just an amazing amount. If you’re lactose intolerant steer clear. This is a purely fun, purely hilarious fic and its just so much fun. If you need to smile, this is the place you need to be.

Porte-Boner by @abadmeanman

This fic is so hilarious it altered my state of mind and caused me to write the most ridiculous and off topic comments on each and every chapter. It got so bad that the author was forced to message me to ask me to stop. Then he followed me on Tumblr just to make sure I would leave him alone. He messages me occasionally to make sure I’m not going to comment on his fic again. Jokes on him. We live in a free country and I CAN DO WHAT—

Okay, here’s what I have to say for real. Anyone can pop open a word doc and start writing a shit post meme fic and throw it up on AO3 and call it a day. But it takes a true writer to do it WELL. Humor does not come easily and written humor is often times one of the hardest forms to nail. Phil nails it (HEH HEH) perfectly. His comedic timing is spot on and the sheer amount of pop culture references are just staggering and I’m sure I’ve missed about half of them. On top of that he stays true to character while exploring edges we’ve not seen (and definitely WILL NOT see) in the show. Okay, now I’m done.

Satisfaction Brought It Back by @siderealsandman

An extremely delicious, definitely NSFW BDSM/friends with benefits/fake dating AU. This fic is just so much more than it’s AU. It goes so far beyond its BDSM theme and I was just not prepared for it when I dived in. What you might think you’re getting: crazy kinky sex everywhere all the time – What you’re actually getting: deep and meaningful character development, ANGST, FLUFF,  lessons on safe and healthy sexual relationships, lessons on safe and healthy relationships in general, lessons on how NOT to pretend like you’re not in love with your partner. And all of it extremely well written. If you are not an Innocent Child you must go read this. It will save your soul and send it to hell in one fell swoop.

Serendipitous Fate by @skaylanphear

*DEEP BREATH* I am still not and never will be over this fic or Kay’s writing. It just cannot be done. Kay’s understanding of these characters and their world is so insanely in depth its mind boggling. She handles each and every one of them with such love that it takes my breath away. Nothing is done without out a cause and effect and everything is woven into an intricate web. I sometimes get so profoundly sad that this is not cannon because it’s just so authentic and accurate. I know I can’t really say that because we don’t know what will be “cannon” or authentic or accurate, but it just is. If you’re not reading SF or planning on reading it, you’re doing yourself a terrible disservice.

Squares, Triangles, and Other Shapes by @sadrien

DOUBLE. FAKE. DATING. AU. Holy hell, how Sadrien even got through the fic summary without getting vertigo I have no clue. This fic delivers something that I think the fandom required. A fake dating square to walk hand in hand with our love square. It’s still early on, but I can already tell it will be filled with a bunch of hilarious situations and shenanigans. I’m just so excited and you should be too!

Sugar, Sugar by @bullysquadess

Who else but Bully would/could deliver unto us a beautifully written…Sugar Daddy AU? Just the mere fact that she fully has me believing this could really happen between Adrien and Marinette is the achievement of the year. This fic is in the early stages, but has such a promising beginning and will surely be a hilarious ride.

The Ladybug and The Bees by @bullysquadess

Oh man. The infamous TLATB. So, this is the third Bully Fic™ on my list and I could talk about how it’s the flagship sin fic and all that, but I’m not. I want to talk about how much I love Bully’s writing and how great of a writer she is, really, truly. As I said in my little blurb about Porte-Boner, humor is a truly hard thing to write and get across the right way. Bully does this flawlessly, every. single. time. But there’s more than that, when TLATB started to take an unplanned off-road detour to angst-ville, Bully managed to keep her readers right with her. Folks, that is an extremely hard thing to do, to keep your readers with you, no matter what crazy shit you do. To keep them believing and to not jolt them out of the narrative. That’s the main job of the writer, to kidnap their readers and keep the believing all the way through to the last page. Bully, you’re a great writer, I know you’re having a rough and unpleasant time right now, but keep your chin up. You’re great.

The Luckiest Man In Paris by Ms. Sophie

The premise of this fic is just so undeniably adorable and everything that follows is undeniably adorable as well. I just love how Sophie writes the dynamic between Chat and Mari. It’s so true to their characters and so adorable. HAVE I SAID ADORABLE ENOUGH. I’ve actually probably said it too many times for the amount of sin happening (and will be happening) in this fic. Sophie captures my attention with lovely turns of phrase she uses and wonderful character interactions. It’s such a great read and you should GO READ IT NOW. Also because Sophie is a sweet little dumpling.

You Don’t Know Me by @ferisae

Okay. So, um…it’s like really hard to get me to actually cry, like blubbering tears and unattractive hiccups crying, during movies/shows/books. I can count on one hand the amount of times a book or movie or show has made me cry. You Don’t Know Me has DESTROYED me.  TWICE. While reading it. If you’re ready for a soul-crushing amount of angst Ferisae is your dealer. She delves deep, deep into Adrien’s character and pulls out everything that is sad and lonely and uses it to crush you in the best way. Even if you’re someone who actively avoids angsty fics (like me) you absolutely must give yourself the chance to read this. Just make sure you have a nice warm cup of something hot and a blanky and maybe some baby animal photos open in the next tab over.

Okay this got super long, whoops. Sorry not sorry because all these author’s deserve all the love.

Thank you to each and every one of these lovely people and every fic author out there. Y’all are truly amazing for the amount of time, work and love you put into your writing. It shows a true passion and even if writing isn’t what you want to do with your life full time, the passion you have can easily be transferred to any aspect of your life. Passion is fuel to live and live happily. Thank you for sharing your passion with us.

One Piece Live Action

All of the live actions Hollywood has done has been an ass of a disaster. Just getting that out there.

I personally haven’t watched DBZ or the recent Ghost in the Shell but I’ve been in the midst of the generally dissatisfaction, to say the least, about both. And we all know of the unspeakable Avatar the Last Airbender (ATLA) live action.

But with One Piece(OP), that’s a whole monolith of a story that ATLA and Attack on Titan and others haven’t been before with almost a thousand chapters and episodes ongoing.

I think the main problem live action movies and their writers and directors have is that they can’t get the idea of the source being from an ANIME. It just sticks in their head and doesn’t allow them to treat this as a movie as it should be. An anime, a tv series, a book, and a movie are all different mediums and have completely different rules.

The thing I’m afraid about is that the live action will try to get the whole crew together in one movie and the fans know how long it took to get to Brook. I’m thinking that the best way to approach this is by following the animated movies’ lead, such as Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island and Dead End Adventure, and create an original narrative and plop it into the flow of OP’s storyline, kind of like what they do for filler.

Then comes the main purpose of the live action even existing, which is to appeal to an audience that typically wouldn’t watch anime and haven’t even heard of OP. So if they do as I said and make an original narrative like which was made for only the fans in mind, it might alienate the other half of the population.

Which comes in the whole situation of treating this like a movie instead of an anime. Get your head out of that anime is weird belief that everyone still has, writers and directors. You don’t need to spoon feed us everything by stating it directly and I think the audience who weren’t fans originally would agree even if they don’t have previous knowledge.

Let’s take Avatar again. The writers and director had a hard time with that one as they felt the need to add narration and world building and backstory within the characters’ dialogue and thus sucking any characterization from them and making it seem like the movie was just regurgitating information at you. Narration and Dialogue can be utilized to do worldbuilding, but it needs to be done right and not overused or repetitive. As I’m not an expert I can’t dive into this knowledgeably but I think this is the general consensus, unless they would do something smart and innovative with those things, but I digress. Even taking the anime in consideration, OP doesn’t use its narrator often, he mostly just shows up to recap on the fights or show where Zoro is lost at the moment. There needs to be a balance for both the fans and the ones who don’t know what they’re getting into. So worldbuilding is important, backstory is important, but what I believe should be the main focus is selling the characters and the spirit of One Piece.

This doesn’t mean doing as Percy Jackson the movies did by changing things unnecessarily, such as the character’s ages and the entire plot and the wit and spirit Rick Riordan put into the books. I think the Harry Potter franchise did the best in this case as they sold the spirit of the books, stuck to the plot, but was good at knowing when to trim some details off to fit the movie format.

So what I’m trying to say is that you’re translating something from a different medium to another, so it should be different from the main material. Of course, OP is going to be better as a manga because it works best as a manga. It has basically no restrictions on when it should stop and this way the writer, Oda Eiichiro, can more freely get people involved in the characters and the backstory. But there is a restriction on movies, and clearly the formula of shoving everything into a medium that has different rules isn’t working. The movies aren’t something the populus should expect to see an entire book in or an entire anime series in.

Another example is Howl’s Moving Castle, which is a stretch as it was inspired by the book and not based. But in my personal experience, I checked out the book because it did beautifully in an ANIMATED format but was completely different from the book.

So, if ATLA had been given and promised multiple movies, then they should’ve stuck to the plot. If possible stick to the plot. But it wasn’t because they weren’t promised another movie. And I believe, trying to fit the entirety of season one into one movie wasn’t the right choice for a solo movie. They should’ve cut it down. They should’ve stopped after the Winter Solstice, maybe cutting out Avatar Kyoshi and Omashu, though those are really important parts in themselves. The success of a movie done right, even though it didn’t have everything could’ve brought on the chance of another and maybe even more live action movies.

If OP is given more movies then they should stick to the plot. But the big difference between OP and ATLA is their versatility. OP as an anime series is more malleable and, in my opinion, has written the better filler arcs of anime. ATLA had a strict almost book like structure that builds off of each episode. So OP can have the possibility of straying off the original plot more than ATLA had.

To sum up, sell the spirit and character, never change things unnecessarily like Percy Jackson, don’t stick to the plot with a giant of a story like One Piece, and treat this like what it is: an action and adventure movie.

I know for a fact, it’s almost a given, that the movie will begin with Gol D. Roger’s execution and his last words about the one piece that prompted the Pirate Era. (and then Cinema Sins will say ‘roll credits’). Then it can go multiple ways. A montage of Luffy meeting his crew, young seventeen Luffy about to leave with his little boat, thinking back to Shanks and his hat, or just the flashback to Shanks putting the straw hat on luffy, and my personal favorite is just cutting to Luffy’s grin and the crew fighting on the deck of the Sunny where they can show their relationship to each other while in combat and their role in the crew. Or maybe a mishmash of all of them.

My hopes are that they will make Chopper cute and– the elephant in the room–not whitewash the Straw Hat crew. Personally, Usopp and Brook should be played by black actors, Nami could be latina, Zoro should be asian, Robin could be filipino or Indian but definitely someone dark skinned, Sanji and Franky can be white but Sanji needs to be or must resemble a french origin. Luffy can be anything to be honest as long as he acts like the character.

And the thing is, One Piece didn’t catch on in America as well as Naruto did back in the day, because of the horrible 4kid’s adaption that tried to make the show kid friendly which One Piece really isn’t (and that whole issue with making things kid friendly or maybe even dumber for kid’s to understand is also something that gets on my nerves). It ruined the chance of the show to be something even more amazing than it already is. The same thing happened with the live action of ATLA which made people disinclined to check out the animated show and affected the success of Korra.

I’m very passionate about One Piece, it’s dear to my heart and I really hope the live action isn’t a complete flop. I don’t remember OP for the fights, honestly, (naruto fights are more well animated and interesting) and I don’t like OP for them either, I like the story, and the characters. Luffy and the others say some profound things that have resonated in me and motivate me to this day. OP makes me laugh and cry and feel a connection to the characters. Not saying it doesn’t have faults, but I can see why it made the top and has stayed the top in shonen manga.

This is just my messy attempt at making a suggestion for the infamous anime live action. Oh yeah, and there’s the whole deal with how weird and wacky one piece can be, especially for western audiences. Well, if they can handle a movie about humanized emojis I think they can handle a rubber man and a talking reindeer.

Really hoping live action FMA is good though.

Thank you to nchanstories who talked this through with me and who I can’t tag at the moment because theyre getting some rare hours of sleep

Have you read The Metropolitan Man? I don't know what's your policy on fanfiction but it's a "realistic" take on Superman arriving in the 30s.

Haven’t read that one - looking over it briefly it seems pretty damn depressing, though I suppose that’s kind of the point. I’ll probably check it out sometime.

I’m definitely down for fanfiction, but there’s precious little with Superman I’m into - when I occasionally think of Superman fanfic I hope “cool, maybe there’s finally some cool cosmic adventure stuff in here given the comics so rarely go there, or some really insightful character observations of the kind writers too sparsely touch on!” and then it ends up being 7000 pages on a powerless high-school aged Clark’s torrid affair with Jason Todd behind Congorilla’s back or something. But keeping my eyes open, there’ve definitely been some over the years that worked for me:

* Superboy: A great little moment of growth for a young Clark Kent in a short animated comic by @jordangibson.

* All In A Day’s Work: Good chance you saw this floating around on Tumblr awhile back, this is another really great little short comic by Tom Gimlin and Marcellis Wentz, on the weight of the job.

* Superman’s Story: Opposite Number: An excellent short piece by @spectralspices based on an idea he was nice enough to bounce off me, as Superman goes up against a pair of challenges unusual even for him - one comedic, one very much not.

* Pop-Drama: Superman: I don’t know how much this really qualifies as fanfic in the traditional sense - it’s a broad story proposal by @andrewhickeywriter on an ‘end point’ for Superman - but it’s damn fun and satisfying. There’s also a follow-up article where he elaborates on a major plot point.

* Superman Lives: Another short comic, this time by Joe Otis Costello and Des Taylor, where the Superman of 1938 is beamed in a fight with Brainiac into the world of 2014, and Lois Lane naturally gets the exclusive interview with the returned hero, the story being presented in magazine format. The characterizations may or may not work for you - parts do for me, others not - but it’s an interesting exercise nonetheless, and Des Taylor’s work is absolutely gorgeous.

* @ck1blogs: Clark Kent’s reasonably infamous Twitter account. He is not good at the internet, or humans.

* @filmcriticsuperman: Less well-known than its cousin ck1, which is a shame; unlike most “Film Critic X” feeds, it’s actually…well, really good, courtesy of @charlotteofoz. It maintains the voice throughout and perfectly, and while half the feed is indeed movie reviews - always through the filter of Superman - the other half is just Superman talking about his day, and while it was coming out it was probably the best ongoing Superman material of the last several years. If starting at the beginning of the feed to get a feel for it seems too ominous, worth it though it may be, a good sample would be the more traditional short story she did connected to it, a Superman Halloween spooktacular by the name of Yellowfire.

* Kosmograd Blues: A short story by The Quantum Thief and Invisible Planets author Hannu Rajaniemi focused on a Russian Superman analog, it’s a beautifully written, somber story of a superman who’s long since lost what made his own life worthwhile, but knows he still has a job to do. This was to be one part of a series of superhero short stories set in a larger world he had built - he wrote a little more about the details of it once - but to my knowledge this was all that ever came out of it.

* Kahlil: An ongoing webcomic by Kumail Rizvi in which the last son of Krypton landed in Karachi; it’s been awhile since I last checked in on it, but I recall it being very good, with some spectacular artwork making the few moments thus far of super-ness really pop.

* Superman vs. The Universe: A spiritual cousin to Joe Keatinge’s Strange Visitor, this is the story of an all-powerful Superman at the end of time looking back on his existence as he prepares for his last duty; the prose is stilted in places, but there are enough great ideas and emotional moments in here to make it more than worth your time.

* Repairing The World: I’ll admit some bias up front since the author’s a friend of mine, but starlightify’s DCU series of fanfics - largely centered around Superman and Batman - are a lot of fun, very funny and heartfelt. Some good samplers with Superman would be Salutation and Canidae.

* Silver Age Superman: I’ve never gotten my hands on this semi-legendary bootleg 1990 comic by Ed Pinsent and Mark Robinson, but the likes of Al Ewing and phenomenal comics critic Colin Smith have both declared this comic - starring by my understanding perhaps the most alienated version of its title character ever - among their absolute favorite Superman stories, and their word is more than good enough for me; if you see it out in the wild, I’d absolutely say pick it up. And grab a copy for me, would ya?

* Luthor’s Gift/Starwinds Howl: Bizarre as it is to list any Superman work of Elliot S! Maggin’s as fanfiction when he’s one of the characters’ most beloved writers, I suppose that is what these two stories count as given that they’ve only ever been published online and maybe in a fanzine or two to my knowledge rather than with DC’s official sanction, and they’re absolutely of a piece with his novels Last Son of Krypton and Miracle Monday. The latter is his take on how Krypto arrived on Earth; the former shows how Superman finally left Earth around the end of the 21st century the way he often hinted at in his other works.

* Tales of Smallville: Near as I can tell, I’m the only person on the face of the Earth - other than maybe Elliot Maggin, who endorsed these stories himself - who’s aware that on the site supermanthrutheages, Samuel Hawkins posted a series of 4 Superboy stories; him revealing himself to the world, his first big adventure with the Legion of Superheroes, a memorable dinner with a guest, and Martha Kent on her deathbed. On these stories, I know two things. 1. Posterity will unquestionably not validate him. It’s a handful of Silver/Bronze-Age Superboy fanfics on an out-of-the-way fansite, no one will remember them. And 2. He is a Morrison/Ennis/Maggin-tier Superman writer. If I have ever written anything in my life on Superman that you’ve agreed on, for the love of god at least read Martha’s Story, it might honestly be my favorite Superman story other than All-Star.

So along with those recommendations, I do have to throw a request on top: I vaguely recall having once read a short story somewhere online years ago about a Superman-type hero found in a field as an infant by farmers - one’s an alcoholic and one sleeps around, but they clean up their acts for the sake of the kid. He grows up to become a superhero and occasionally fights a Lex Luthorish scientist with an appropriately alliterative name who accuses him of impeding societal progress. Eventually, the hero flies off into space once everyone he knows dies, returning occasionally to Earth as he feels drawn back, to defend it, or rule it, or just wander it in obscurity; his longest and last stay is when he falls in love with a woman who he meets at a restaurant, when she’s the first in all those thousands of years to make apple pie as good as his mother’s. Eventually, he lives to the end of the universe, where he finds himself rocketing back through time and de-aging, crash-landing in a field and completing the time-loop. If anyone could point me in a direction towards it, it’d be very much appreciated; I don’t even recall if it’s any good, but I’ve been trying to find it for years and it’s the principle of the thing at this point.
