but they are very convincing

When the “Gremlin D.Va” meme first started making the rounds, I was very much against it, but was eventually convinced it was harmless because everyone seemed to be enjoying it. I realize now I should’ve stuck to my previous convictions, because it really is a garbage meme.

The main argument I remember being made at the time was that the meme was good because it rejected the sexualization of D.Va’s design, and more broadly of young East Asian women. Inverted it in fact, by turning D.Va into something that couldn’t be sexualized at all. But the thing is, you can’t claim you’re progressive when all you’ve done is trade one form of dehumanization for another. Instead of being objectified, D.Va was infantilized, and even more extremely made into something sub-human (a “gremlin”).

This isn’t about D.Va “being an adult”. Even if she were 16, or 12, or whatever, you can’t dehumanize a character and claim no harm no foul. And “at least it’s not porn” isn’t an argument in its favor, either. Try considering her as a character, something that doesn’t appear to have been a struggle for any other character in overwatch.

In the morning, the fourth-years find themselves facing their very own tragedy, and their greatest acting challenge yet: convincing the police, each other, and themselves that they are innocent.

Holy shit.

This book was fascinating.

It was intense from beginning to end. But not so much an in your face intensity, just a quiet sort of intensity that builds and builds and builds until you’re racing through the pages to find out what happens.

At the beginning I was a little *meh*, but stuck through it because I vaguely know the writer from tumblr and I am so glad I did, sincerely, this is one of my top 5 books of this year. The plot! The characters! The twists! The turns! I can’t praise this book enough.

And the writing style?! Switching back and forth between typical prose and play style was intriguing, and not at all distracting. It helped through the dialogue heavy bits, for sure. 

I love this book so much. I read it in one sitting. (And the first person POV didn’t bother me at all, when it normally does.)

The 9 Elements of a VILLAIN

If we’re being honest, one character is always the most fun to develop when you’re writing a new story. It must be the main character, right? The person you’re going to follow throughout the story, the one that means the most to you?

Nope. It’s the villain.

Villains are just FUN. You get to creep into the darkest corners of your writer brain and conjure up the most unashamedly detestable human being you possibly can. 

This is how we look when we begin creating a villain. 

But sometimes, it can be difficult to to make sure they’re fully believable humans. So here are the nine elements that have helped me out when developing these terrible people … 

1) Hero’s Shadow:

The relationship between the main character and the villain is the most important one in the story, because it is the source of all conflict. Without the villain causing trouble, the main character wouldn’t have the chance to be a hero. Without that trouble, the main character’s weaknesses wouldn’t be pressured, which means they couldn’t change. The villain is a condensed and magnified embodiment of the inner weakness that the hero is battling. They’re the SHADOW of hero, the example of what will happen if the main character goes down the wrong path. Both are facing the same problem in different ways. For example Darth Vader and Luke.  

2) Conflict Strategy:  

In the pursuit of stopping the hero from achieving their goal, the villain is going to attack them on 1) a personal relationship level 2) a societal level and 3) an inner level. They’re going to attack the people around them, they’re going to cause consequences for the community surrounding them, they’re going to get into their head and plague them. Because the hallmark of a villain is that they’re the person who’s perfectly suited to attack the hero’s greatest weakness. Villains should have a distinct set of tactics to destroy the main character, on at least two levels. 

3) Flaws: 

This one’s expected. Of course a villain has flaws, it’s in the job description. But flaws do not equate to ‘He kicks turtles every morning before breakfast’ or 'His favorite hobby is butterfly stomping’ or, more within the realm of possibility, “He wants to kill the hero”. These are evil actions, NOT flaws. A lot of villains, particularly in movies, will be given horrible things to do without any explanation for WHY they do them. And it’s pretty easy to give them reasons: just give them human weaknesses! That’s it. Whether the actions they take are as small as theft or as big as blowing up a planet, these actions stem from recognizable HUMAN FLAWS. So like a main character, a villain needs mental and moral flaws.  

Yup, even Maleficent has human flaws. And she’s a dragon part of the time. 

4) Counter Goal: 

All characters exist because they want something. And what do villains want? To get whatever the main character wants (for very different reasons), to stop them from reaching their goal, or another goal that directly conflicts with the hero’s goal. As long as that big tangible thing they want locks hero and villain in battle, you’re good. Think 101 Dalmatians: Cruella and the good guys are fighting over the puppies.  

5) Surface Motivations:  

Why is it that villains always have a team of followers? Because villains never outright state their true motivations. They always have a cover story, and that cover will paint them as righteous. Villains want to look like the good guy. So their real Hidden Motivations are defended by twisting perceptions of Good & Evil, by portraying evil acts in a positive light, by indulging their followers selfish emotions and desire to feel like “one of the good guys. " 

Take Gothel for example: she’s a loving mother who wants to protect her daughter from all the world’s darkness. (Sure you do, Flynn stabber.)  

Surface Motivations never stand up to logical scrutiny and a functioning moral compass, but giving your bad guy a compelling argument against your good side always makes things more interesting, which brings us to …

6) Counter Statement:

The main character needs to learn some kind of truth that will enable them to fix their lives, overcome their weaknesses, banish their ghosts. It’s whatever statement about "how to live a better life” you want to prove with your story. Your villain has other ideas. They don’t agree with that statement, have other beliefs about living life well, and represent an argument against it. For example, Voldemort: “there is no good and evil, there is only power, and those too weak to seek it." 

Although your argument isn’t very convincing, Voldy. I mean, you’re living in the back of some guy’s head.

7) Characterization: 

This is everything on the surface of the villain. The way they speak, the way they look, the way they act, their role in life, their status and power. This is the facade they project for the world to see, a calculated effort to control how they are perceived. This is closely connected to that surface want, because that surface is what they wish people to believe about them. Over time, the reader and the other characters are going to be able to see through this mask and see what it conceals. My favorite Disney example of this is Mother Gothel: on the surface she’s this bubbly mom who loves Rapunzel and wants to protect her from the harshness of the world. 

You can think of this as the text … 

8) Hidden Motivation: 

And this is the subtext. That surface motivation they want the world to believe is a mask concealing their true motivation, which is always rooted in their flaws,  selfishness, and skewed beliefs. 

9) Ghosts, Justification, Self-Obsession: 

These three are closely related, so they get counted together.
Like main characters, villains have GHOSTS: events from their backstories that knocked their worldviews out of alignment, that marked the beginning of their weaknesses, that haunt them still. Because these happened, the originally benign person allowed themselves to turn into someone who could occupy the job of "villain” in a story. Usually, these events are genuine misfortunes and are worthy of sympathy, just like the ghosts of a main character. Think of Voldemort growing up in an orphanage talking to snakes.

BUT! When it comes to ghosts, the major difference between a hero and a villain is HOW THEY DEAL with these unpleasant past events. Both have suffered, but react to suffering in very different ways. A villain will be consumed by these events, obsessed with the real (or imagined) persecution or disadvantage they’ve endured, convinced that all personal responsibility is nullified by their status of injured party. Past tragedies become a talisman that grants immunity from decency. 

This scene from A Series of Unfortunate Events sums it up.  An adult makes an excuse for a terrible person by saying he had a terrible childhood. And Klaus replies: 

Yes, maybe they’ve both lived through tragedy. But THE KIDS aren’t hurting others because of it. 

Because villains, who are constantly victimizing heroes, are completely convinced that THEY are the true victims here. No matter what they do, no matter what they are, they blame everything on that ghost, whether it was another person, society, or circumstances. And later they blame the hero, who they see as the REAL villain. For example, Frollo from The Hunchback of Notre Dame:  

“It’s not my fault, I’m not to blame”

So! WHY are villains like this?

SELF-OBSESSION! Yup, villains spend an unhealthy amount of time thinking about themselves and their plights and their plots. Think of any villain and it’s not hard to see the inherent narcissism behind everything they do. Like willingness to take action is the nonnegotiable trait of a main character, self-obsession is the trait that all villains seem to share. 

So! Developing villains in this way has worked out for me so far. If it looks like it might be helpful for you, give it a try.

And in the spirit of creating someone to torment our main characters and ruin their lives, here’s one more maniacal laugh for the road:

figuring out you’re asexual is like trying to find a nonexistent needle in a very large haystack except people keep trying to convince you that you’re just not looking hard enough or you’ll find the right needle eventually but the needle just isn’t there and yet everyone else’s is and then you wonder whether or not you actually have a needle and then you spot something that might be a needle but nope it’s just another hay strand and everything is confusing and now the haystack is on fire

Thugs over video feed: “Okay man, just remember you have 24 hours to deliver the money or else the kid dies 

Bruce: "All right, but first I just want to talk to him please I need to know my little baby is okay *wipes away very convincing Fake Tear™* 

*camera pans to Damian, who’s tied to a chair but seems totally chill with the situation and even gives an evil grin when he sees Bruce* 

Bruce (yelling dramatically): "OH NO MY DARLING CHILD ARE YOU OKAY??”

Bruce (furiously whispering): “Don’t you dare hurt them do you hear me young man" 

"DID YOU GET BOO BOOS?? DO YOU HAVE ANY BROKEN BONES?? OH MY GOD DID THEY TOUCH YOU DID THEY STEAL YOUR INNOCENCE REMEMBER NO MEANS NO DAMIAN YOU NEED TO FIGHT BACK AND STAY STRONG UNTIL WE COME RESCUE YOU OKAY"

Heyho Maddox! So I need advice. I'm a 12 year old artist. Everyone in school refer me as a "young artist" and I love drawing. It's my passion. But, my parents aren't supporting me and tend to get mad at me everytime I want to draw. They want me to stop and be a doctor but I don't want to. I want to be a successful artist like you. Help please?

My parents didn’t really supported me being an artist till I was 18 (when I decided to do art for good). But I understand why they push us to do something else besides art. They worry and they know its an unstable/unpredictable job. 

You are also really young at the moment. When I was your age, I wanted to be a Fashion Designer or a Veterinarian but ended up doing Animation because believe me when I say ART is just a general term of so many other specialisations that you have to consider.

Its just like if you wanna be a doctor, what kind of doctor you wanna be. Same applied with art, what kind of art based job you wanna pursue? I am currently studying animation but I like illustration very much. And there are a lot more like graphic design, interior design, fashion design, comic artist, and etc. So you do need to do more research and put more thought on what you really want focus on for art.

I will also be very real with you since you are considering this as your future and job. Art is something you really need to love and have 100% passion in doing because there are a lot of factors like rejections, criticisms and conflicts that may make you feel like shit.

If you are very sure if you are gonna give art your all, then go for it. Convince your parents in every way possible because thats ONE of the few conflicts that you need to over come. Its like an endless battle when it comes to the creative industry. Do what you strongly believe in. 

Convince yourself before you convince others.

Okay I absolutely LOVE THIS so give me an entire Voltron aquarium AU

  • Voltron Aquarium was owned by Alfor, but he retired and his best friend Coran took over
  • His daughter Allura wanted to take over because she studies zoology but she’s still young and in school and Alfor wants her to graduate ,so Coran takes over so he knows his staff will still be taken care of
  • Allura still plays a huge part, she’s one of their best animal handlers and she teaches a lot of programs for local schools
  • Shiro is their primary physician for the animals, so he and Allura usually work together a lot to see if problems are medical or behavioral and just generally make sure the animals are happy and healthy
  • Hunk works there too, as a sort of grounds keeper and technician to make sure the outdoor displays look nice, the exhibits have proper lighting and temperatures and space and nothing is broken
  • And during the summer they offer boat tours! They have a boat they keep at a local marina and Hunk drives the boat while Allura teaches programs
  • Pidge can’t work there because she’s still in high school, but she volunteers there every weekend bc she’s a huge nerd
  • Sometimes she helps Allura teach programs and she knows all the animals and could babble about their ecosystems for hours
  • Keith is a marine biology and environmental science student at the local college and is there basically all the time because he has a membership that gets him free admission
  • Shiro is his best friend from childhood and they both grew up on the beach and developed a love for aquatic life so they both study it
  • So Keith goes there to hang out with Shiro, lend a hand when it’s needed bc he knows the whole staff and aquarium pretty well, but mostly he just hangs out by his favorite exhibits while doing homework
  • A local extremist “animal rights” group and publication called GALRA holds protests outside the aquarium saying that holding animals in captivity is wrong
  • The staff is annoyed and Pidge fights them a lot bc they work with a lot of conservation groups to create animal welfare programs and protect water rights, and their animals are all well taken care of with appropriate exhibits
  • Nevertheless GALRA is loud and public, and so they notice they’ve been losing money, especially on the days when the protestors are there
  • So they need a big new idea that can bring people in, but it has to be something they can be public about without GALRA condemning them and making things even worse
  • Hunk is the one who suggests it, he knows his neighbor is obsessed with ocean life and is a professional mermaid
  • It’s perfect because the aquarium needs a non-animal based exhibit and Lance has been struggling to make ends meet
  • He works during the day as a fitness instructor, and he’s studying at the community college nearby, but the mermaid thing is mostly just a hobby that he and his partner Plaxum do every once in a while
  • He and Plaxum get hired as a mermaid duo to perform shows fairly regularly
  • Keith shows up one day and notices it’s really crowded and is like ???? because he doesn’t know of any new exhibits or anything
  • So he goes exploring and sees one of the pools is occupied by two people
  • He looks around and there’s no staff around, are these people trespassing? So he goes over and starts telling Lance that guests can’t just jump into the pool, and there’s a crowd gathering so he needs to get out before he gets in huge trouble
  • Lance just looks all confused, then laughs and is like “Come back in 20 minutes”
  • So Keith gets all annoyed and leaves but he can’t help it, he’s curious, so he comes back later to see that these people are still in the pool, only now he notices they have mermaid tails and are putting on a whole show
  • And look, Lance may have just been doing this mostly as a hobby, but dang if he isn’t good at it
  • Turns out Lance is studying ecology and biology and like wow, he knows what he’s talking about
  • He and Plaxum look so graceful performing these shows, and he is really good at charming the audience and putting on a very convincing act while also teaching kids about marine ecology
  • At first Keith thinks it’s silly but I mean, Lance is very attractive and the mermaid costume is doing wonders for him
  • And Lance has his whole mermaid act, so he is very sassy and fun and teases Keith when he gets caught staring at them and pretending not to be invested
  • But like he’s clearly there with Plaxum and so he kinda just observes from afar
  • Except he’s there late one day, and sees Lance leaving after a show, and Keith realizes this is his first time seeing Lance with clothes, and his hair is dry and kinda curly from the water, and he looks tired but so so cute
  • So Keith is like whoaaa okay run away but nope, Lance sees him and starts up a conversation
  • And it turns out the mermaid persona is like, exactly that, a persona? And Lance is actually very sweet and soft-spoken and nice and wow Keith is done for
  • Keith just so happens to start hanging around the aquarium during every show, and Lance is an oblivious idiot who thinks he’s there to watch Plaxum and be a fish nerd
  • Cue some good old fashioned mutual pining
  • Until one day, Keith is hanging around waiting for Shiro to clock out and notices Hunk talking to Lance
  • So Keith starts to walk over and Lance doesn’t notice and Keith overhears him talking about how cute some guy is and how he’s there all the time but he only ran into him the one time and he can’t be flirting while doing a show
  • Keith is all :( because Lance likes someone else
  • And Lance still doesn’t notice him and is like “I don’t even know his name! I just call him cute mullet boy with the red jacket in my head” and like
  • Cue Hunk looking behind Lance to Keith, with his mullet and his red jacket and a freaking lightbulb goes off
  • So Hunk is like “His name is Keith” and Lance is like ?!?!?! you know him?! Can you introduce me?
  • So Hunk is like ummmm introduce yourself
  • And Lance turns around and realizes Keith has been eavesdropping and wow they are both very gay
  • So they start dating and they’re the ocean’s greatest power couple
  • Anyways Lance’s exhibit does wonderfully and GALRA can’t fight them on it and the protestors stop showing up so business is doing really well
  • And it’s happy and gay and mermaids bring everyone together!
Writing a Character With Psychosis

If your character has psychosis, first, give yourself a pat on the back for taking a big step! Not very many people do this, and not very many people do it well. Here’s a small text post to try to help.
Hallucinations:

- Auditory hallucinations can come from inside the mind, too. You can hear people calling your name, and occasionally screaming or laughing. Someone who has knowledge of their condition will try their best to ignore them.

-Voices in the head can be anything from a ‘narrator’ narrating what they do, a friend, or a manipulative enemy. Sometimes you’ll hear choruses of things–your character can try to reason with their voices, but the less human the voices sound, the harder that can be.

-Voices can be very convincing, and your character can miss them if they disappear.

-Tactile hallucinations can be anything from feeling rain when there isn’t any to someone tapping on your shoulder to working at school with someone’s 'hands’ around your neck. They’re often the hardest to distinguish from reality.

-Seeing things can be realistic or unrealistic. You might have someone watching you the whole day, or seeing your cat when he’s actually dead, to bending down to pick a 'pencil’ up when it disappears. Seeing things float or flickering lights can be annoying to your character. Images distorting are not uncommon.

-Your character will be annoyed by these if they have identified their hallucinations as fake. Hallucinations detract from ones life and complicate ones day.

-Delusions can last for a long time or for a short time. Your character will be afraid, and a flight or fight response will be the majority of their actions. Feeling things chasing them is common, and certain objects might bring them comfort.

-Paranoia isn’t just with psychosis. If your character is aware of their psychosis, then they will distrust everything and possibly ask other people if things are real. Nothing is definite.

-Stigma against psychosis is very common, and stigma against medicine is too. Your character will probably be afraid of telling people.

-Medicine will take more than a month sometimes to completely kick in. Sometimes while it’s kicking in, stress will make it worse.

-This post is specifically for psychosis and hallucinations/delusions. I am not educated on schizophrenia, and am not making a generalization of that.

Long story short, please do other research. The world is plagued with books that exacerbate stigma and myths. Ask people who suffer from psychosis or used to. This is not meant to be your only resource, nor it is definite for all cases. Every case of psychosis is different, and you can’t say one thing happens for everyone. Thank you for reading!
TL;DR Just a resource if you want to write a character with psychosis, do other research too.

Post-BatB headcanons

- Adam gets Belle anything she wants. Literally. Anything. One time she offhandedly mentioned she liked art and he bought her the fucking Louvre.

- When Belle tells Adam she’s going to have a baby he acts all calm and collected for about five seconds. He then starts sweating profusely and runs away screaming. 

- Belle and the servants are very quick to convince him that he’ll be a great father, despite his own. In the end it only takes them half an hour to convince him to come out from under the dining table.

- The first time Adam holds his newborn daughter in his arms he cries. He never thought he could love someone more than Belle. They name her after their mothers (no, none of that weird Twilight combo name shit).

- LeFou and Stanley come over to the castle every Sunday for dinner. 

- Anytime Adam sees the Enchantress he hides behind Belle. It’s somewhat ineffective. 

- Mrs. Potts tells Belle horribly embarrassing stories about Adam from when he was younger. Whenever Belle laughs at him he calmly reminds her that she fell in love with a giant, talking buffalo.

- Maurice teaches his granddaughter how to ride a horse, just as he taught Belle. Adam fallows behind, arms out, just in case she falls. She, of course, never does.

- The second time Belle tells Adam she’s going to have a baby it only takes them twenty minutes to get him out from under the table.

A Wizard Did It
  • ((Context: My character, a Tiefling, is trying to sneak down the corridor at our party wizard Miana's guild, somewhere she shouldn't be and doesn't want to be recognized.))
  • NPC: Oh, hey Miana! Why.... is there a demon stood next to you?
  • Me (OOC): Shit. I'm gonna roll to convince her that I'm just an illusion.
  • Roll: *8*
  • Me, halfheartedly: I'm an illusion, created by a wizard.
  • NPC: Uh... huh. Not a very convincing one.
  • Miana: Oh, um, yeah. I'm working on it, it's still a bit rough around the edges.
  • Miana (OOC): I'm going to cast Minor Illusion to make the Tiefling look shimmery and poorly-rendered.
  • GM: Okay, that'll let you roll your Deception again.
  • Roll: *18*
  • Me, motioning emphatically at Miana: I'm an illusion, created by a wizard!
  • NPC: Ohhhh, now I get it. It definitely needs more work - can you make it say anything else?
  • Me, shaking my head sadly: I'm an illusion, created by a wizard.
  • Me (OOC): Looks like she's buying it! I'd like to roll to escape down this corridor while moving as if I'm a poorly-animated illusion...
  • Roll: *natural 20*
  • GM: Wow. You jerk, slide, and T-pose your way along the hall. When you get to the adjar doorway, you sidle through it so quickly and smoothly that onlookers are convinced that you clipped through it.

Listen, I know nothing of what they think, decide, plan, but of ONE thing I’m 100% sure, and that’s why I keep being a Larrie: whatever move they do, they discuss it together and together they reach whatever conclusion they’re later acting on. If I thought one of the two wouldn’t consider the other’s feelings and situation a priority just as much as their own, I wouldn’t sill be here supporting them, personally.
