LOT/CC fic: What Happens at the Halloween Party...

When Sara and Leonard have to go undercover at a Halloween party, neither one of them reckons on events that might bring certain…feelings…to the surface. For the DCTVHalloween challenge.

Also, happy birthday to the awesome @sylvanheather, who gave me the prompt “CaptainCanary and drunken Twister.” :)   This is an AU where Len didn’t die at the Oculus, set before the time-scattering thing. Pre-CaptainCanary relationship.

This isn’t noncon (I won’t write that), but it does feature characters losing inhibitions because of the influence of…outside forces. Just so you know.

I’m not posting the full story here this time because it’s pretty long. Many thanks to @larielromeniel for the beta!

“Do you really need to send them?”

Ray’s voice was mournful as he waited with the others on the Waverider’s bridge, where Rip was still studying plans for the latest mission, Stein and Jax were talking, and Mick was waiting to play his own role. The inventor, however, was still reading the invitation to the event in question and…well, moping.

“I mean, the rest of us might like to go to a Halloween party too,” he continued. “I still have my outfit from Salvation. I could…”

Rip, however, had had enough at this point.

"Dr. Palmer,” he said at his most world-weary, running a hand over his face, “although I might prefer you take on this mission, Mr. Snart’s, ah, particular abilities make him the obvious choice. And,” he cut off the other man as Ray opened his mouth again, “sending him with Ms. Lance will draw less attention than if he shows up to this event alone.”

“Well, what about Mick?” Ray glanced at the bigger man, who was slumped in a jump seat watching the conversation with every evidence of amusement. “He…”

“Mr. Rory is infiltrating the security crew to remove the item as soon as possible if the others can’t extricate themselves immediately,” Rip explained with the air of a man who’d done so many times before.

Ray was not appeased. “What, so they even get to stay afterward? I…”

“Stop whining, Raymond. It makes you even more annoying than usual.”

The Waverider crew turned, more or less as a whole, to look as Leonard Snart, who, fiddling with his cuffs, sauntered out of the corridor leading to the crew quarters and the fabrication room. Jax and Mick laughed out loud, Stein smiled in amusement and Rip rolled his eyes.

“Mr. Snart,” he said with resignation, “I’m not altogether sure that truly counts as a costume.”

The crook had eschewed his usual black shirt, jeans, and jacket for a coal-gray suit with a blood-red shirt underneath–and a set of scarlet satin devil’s horns peeking out from his short hair. He raised his eyebrows and started to reply…only to be interrupted by a voice from behind him.

"Didn’t you forget something?”

my pals on the lancecord asked me for some tips on cuban spanish so i thought i’d share them here too for all you lance writers. i’m a cuban voltron fan who doesnt want to live in fear of bad spanish in nearly every damn fic and im trying to be the change i want to see in the world. so feel free to message me if you have any questions about lance’s culture bc this is nowhere near being comprehensive at all.

lets get into the stuff google translate can’t teach u!

i don’t know anyone under the age of 60 who says “dios mio.” lance definitely would not, unless he is doing an impression of his abuela.

things that sound more natural than dios mio: ave maria, ay dios, por dios, AY POR DIOS

more commonly we exclaim “coño!” for anything. shock/anger/awe/etc. if the reaction is negative, it’s just coño. if the reaction is positive, we drop the first syllable and draw it out like “‘ñoooooo”

we exclaim “pinga!” or “cojone!” or “pinga cojone!” as a negative reaction more commonly than any translations of omg too

“de madre” is something we usually exclaim as a negative reaction. it can be yelled or sighed or grumbled. usually has a frustrated or incredulous connotation

“wepa!” is a sound we make as a positive exclamation.

we say “‘ueno” like the verbal embodiment of ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (it’s bueno with the b dropped)

other things that sound really stiff for cubans to say is like, “hola, como estas?” i mean, you say it to people you’re not on a casual level with. to friends/family these sound more natural:

“que bola asere” is how we greet our close friends

“que bola” or “que vuelta” is how we say hey

“oye” is hey! but not as a greeting, as an exclamation. something you would say before a greeting or on its own when surprised/offended/trying to get someone’s attention/etc

common insults: cabron/cabrona, mojon, comepinga, comemierda

common pet names for anyone: flaco, nena, mojon, mi socio, corazon

“asere” is our word for “bro” that no other country uses (1000% what lance calls hunk)

we also have a tendency to call our family members by their relation+their name, such as “my Tio Jimmy called” or “Abuela Carmen is making food.” i think this is when we have big ol families and just saying tio or abuela isnt specific enough

also this isnt spanish but i s2g so many bilingual cubans i know use the word “fire” almost constantly to describe something awesome. so i think thats a small cultural thing that communicates lance is cuban without having him speak spanish. (ex. “omg that’s fire” “hunk makes fire tacos” “pidge is fire at fixing stuff” “can you play that fire song?”)

now here’s a bunch of stuff that’s just my opinion

  • I think it’s most in character for Lance to drop Spanish words only one or two at a time into English phrases, since that’s how he uses it in canon (“Hasta la later, Keith!”). A couple of quick examples off the top of my head -
    • tremendo/tremenda - an adjective for huge. “You’re being tremendo sore loser, but okay.”
    • todito/todo - means everything. you can use them one after the other for extra drama. “I forgot todito, todo, about calculus immediately after passing it.”
    • These sound like really natural ways to drop Spanish into conversation without being forced if you keep it to a minimum. I aint here to tell u how to write your lance but i beg you - Please show restraint and don’t try to use all of these tips at the same time!!
  • I recommend following latin internet personalities (like jaxxgarcia or mr. red) to pick up their Spanglish phrasing if you’re really into that. please don’t try to make up your own. it’s never as cute as you thought.
  • if you’re writing full on spanish for more than a word or two, please do not ever make Lance speak it “accidentally” (or even worse, on purpose) to someone he knows doesn’t understand the language. that’s really rude and alienating and it’s so against lance’s character to isolate himself from others like that when he speaks fluent english.
  • other times Lance can toss a spanish word in without sounding forced is if he’s namedropping cuban things! Try looking up some of our
    • food (ropa vieja, pan con lechon, arroz con leche)
    • drinks (materva, iron beer, malta),
    • films (juan of the dead, azucar amarga)
    • or music (celia cruz, marc anthony, juanes*) and have lance mention them by their spanish name if the topic comes up.
      • *not all of these musicians are cuban, but they’re some of the most popular amongst us. i’m simply naming artists i think lance is most likely to enjoy considering his age and personality.
  • speaking of music, we have very specific dance styles that are pretty cool and almost mandatory to learn at a young age. cubans in general love to party, and to host large family gatherings which easily morph into parties, and basically any social event seems awkward if there’s no one dancing at any point.
  • what I’m trying to say is Lance definitely knows salsa or merengue moves.
  • I don’t love to party and I’m not a good dancer and I don’t like dancing, but I know salsa anyway because I had to be in the environment my whole life. always exceptions, but the majority of cubans grow up knowing how to dance and it looks more or less like this:

and one last opinion for the road:

Voltron takes place in the future, so I like to dream of Lance being born in a world where Cuba’s free from communism. If you’re doing a Voltron AU that takes place nowadays, please don’t write about Lance’s experience in Cuba if you aren’t familiar with what it’s like to live under a regime like that. It’s very bleak and textbooks don’t cover half of the fucked up things that those who live there actually have to go through.

Lance could have been born in Cuba, but raised somewhere else. Miami would be my recommendation because it’s our second homeland and it means he would have been raised surrounded by Cuban culture without the governmental oppression. But Cubans are absolutely everywhere, so it’s equally believable that Lance’s family could have immigrated to Pawnee, Indiana. Even in Voltron canon, I think it’s likely Lance moved to America at a young age because he clearly has a native fluency in English.

edit: I have a cuban things tag now if you’re interested in finding out more cultural details!

So, last night I rewatched The Way He Looks (Hoje Eu Quero Voltar Sozinho), and of the million and one reasons why everyone should watch this movie, here are a few:

This is Gabriel (left) and Leo (right)

  • It’s on netflix, which most of you probably have, so it’s accessible
  • How many queer stories are there that feature a protagonist with a disability? Not many, but this one does! Leo is blind, he’s the main character, and I feel they handled his disability well (this is coming from a non-disabled person, though, so feel free to disagree)
  • It’s a pretty stereotypical indie teen romance movie, but the queer aspect already makes it 100x more interesting
  • a realistic parent-child relationship, with bonus awesome grandma
  • there’s no “omg, am I gay???” freak out. In fact, both characters are pretty much 100% ok with being into each other, and they’re main worry is “i don’t know if they like me back, but i know i want to stay friends with them at least, what do i do??” with a tiny sprinkling of jealousy, cause, well, stereotypical teen romance
  • a very beautiful and loving girl-boy friendship with lots of casual, platonic intimacy
  • there’s nothing super angsty?? like, no death or super homophobic parents/classmates or having to hide that they’re queer. it’s honestly such a feel-good movie???
  • what homophobia there is, it comes as teasing and there are never any hints of anything turning violent, and in fact, at one point, when the bully character is teasing Gabriel and Leo for being boyfriends, Leo shows him that they are, in fact, real-life boyfriends, and the bully’s friends start teasing him for trying to make fun of them when they’re actually boyfriends
  • the girl best friend isn’t narratively pushed to the side when the new boy (love interest) comes in. In fact, her (Giovana) and Leo’s friendship is shown to be just as important as Leo and Gabriel’s relationship
  • everything works out and you’re left with a lovely, sweet, happy ending that’s honestly just so nice to see in a young queer romance???
  • I really love this movie, and there’s also a short-film!! on youtube that I recommend, too!

svtfoe is so much more the ships, ships are alright but so many people are forgetting svtfoe is also a show about:
-family

- a deeper story about prejudice against monsters

-mystery and magic

-cute and fun characters and getting to see all their dynamics/how they interact with each other

-some very morals/lesson for kids to learn

-and a lot of creative overlooked concepts

-a generally an awesomely animated show with wicked/action fight scenes !!!

It’s just a wacky fun action-packed magical girl show that should be enjoyed as a whole!!! not just hyperfocused the romance aspect. We don’t often get a show like this, a show that does such a good job at teaching us how to have fun!

Why Wonder Woman was so Important to Me

I had the opportunity to see Wonder Woman recently, and I was left awestruck.  Wonder Woman is such a timeless character, and I feel this story and the way the film was made really captured the heart of the original character.  With DC’s track record, it had a high chance of being lazy and bad.  But it wasn’t.  It was original. Refreshing. I cried a lot, and here’s why.

1. Women Are Strong

I’m not one to loudly complain about the misrepresentation of women in media (though we often are).  We’ve had some really awesome and strong female characters over the past couple years.  But somehow, Wonder Woman took this in a completely new direction.  Watching the Amazons fight the invaders on the beach nearly brought me to tears.  It was so special for me to see women take on roles we rarely see them in.  They were the fighters, the protectors, the providers.  There are many women out in the world right now who are fighting their own battles, much like the Amazons.  They’re providing for their families or serving their countries through the military.  It was a pleasant reminder that while men and women have differences, they are equally strong and skilled.

(Also yay for a female director!)

2. Actions Speak Louder

Many times, Wonder Woman is questioned.  She’s scoffed at for being a women (which would have been very common during that time).  She’s underestimated.  But what’s so amazing here is that she never has to prove herself to the men.  It would’ve been so easy for the movie to fall into that common trope.  She never argues with a man and she focuses her attention on others instead of herself.  She wants to kill Ares and stop the war. And in the end, her actions speak louder then her words ever could.  What I took from this is to rise to action.  Stop talking and start doing.  Ignore what others say, because you know what you can do.  Hold your head high and rise above.

3. Mutual Respect Brings the Most Success

As I said before, it would have been easy for the film to fall into certain tropes.  A trope we often see nowadays is a woman proving that she (or all women) are better then men.  That’s never a point of conflict in this film.  Her love interest, Steve, fights as her equal.  He isn’t clumsy or weak to make Wonder Woman look stronger.  He believes in her and helps her to the best of his ability. When they become interested in each other romantically, they both hold their own.  They love each other but are not dependent on one another.  We see the rest of the men in their gang react the same way later on.  They all eventually come to love and respect Diana.  It’s a great reminder that feminism is about collaboration and equality, not one gender being better then the other.  We each have something to bring to the table and our differences are what makes us stronger.

4. It’s Okay to not be Okay

There’s a really interesting character in Wonder Woman’s gang named Charlie.  He’s supposed to be the world’s top shooter, but time and time again he fails.  He seen some things that have damaged him pretty heavily.  What’s really interesting about this character is that we never see this issue resolved.  He doesn’t have his big “hero moment” where he is suddenly able to shoot and save the day.  This is so much like real life.  We’ve all been hurt, and it’s ok to be damaged.  You have nothing to prove, but your great efforts will help everything to turn out right in the end.  At one point, Charlie even says to Diana “You don’t need me, you’re better of without me.” To this she replies “No, Charlie, if you’re not here, who will sing?” This implies that Charlie is still a valued member of the group, despite his shortcomings.  His friends are able to recognize his other strengths when he cannot.

5. There is Much Darkness in the World, But Love Will Save the Day

Not much to say here, as Diana said it all in her own monologue:

“I used to want to save the world, to end war and bring peace to mankind. But then I glimpsed the darkness that lives within their light. I learnt that inside every one of them there will always be both. The choice each must make for themselves - something no hero will ever defeat. And now I know… that only love can truly save the world. So now I stay, I fight, and I give - for the world I know can be. This is my mission now, for ever.”

Often times love is portrayed as a great weakness. But it isn’t.  To love is to truly see beauty in the world.  To love is to be brave and strong.  Love is the greatest power of all.

Additional Notes:

We must learn to forgive.  Diana had the opportunity to kill the chemist responsible for Steve’s death.  And she chose not too, instead focusing on the larger problem at hand and in turn leaving the past in the past.

There were not gratuitous or sexualized shots of the women in the film.  The framing was based around the action.  The women were all beautiful, but the film relied on it’s story and the strength of it’s lead rather then her beauty.

There will always be hardship. There isn’t always one bad guy to fight.  We all will have to continue to fight our demons and endure through our trials.  But it’s the light and the love, those precious moments, that we fight for.

Thanks Wonder Woman.  You inspired me, and I’m so grateful.  I don’t think I’ve seen a superhero movie with more heart.  There will be many days ahead where I think “What would Wonder Woman do?”

*I may edit and add on to more of this at a later time, but I wanted to get my initial thoughts out!

podcasts wot i listen to

this is a rec list of sorts

okay, so, in the order i listened to them:

  1. welcome to night vale - everyone and their mother has heard of wtnv, it’s the first podcast most people listen to, and it is deserving of that fame! funny, creepy, weird, and great on representation, it is an exceedingly well written and thought out podcast. in case, for some inexplicable reason, you haven’t heard people banging on about it enough, it is in the format of a local radio show in the small desert town of night vale, where every conspiracy theory you’ve ever heard is true.
  2. the orbiting human circus (of the air) - ngl, this is my comfort podcast. it is the nicest sounding thing i’ve ever listened to. the way voices and music blend together creates a plethora of delights for the ears. the story of the first season follows julian, janitor of the eiffel tower, and tells weird and wonderful stories that are pure magic. the second season is a different story, but is just as beautiful.
  3. within the wires - the format for this one is so. clever. it had me hooked from the beginning to the end, and the writing and the way the story unfolds is genius. it is quite unsettling, but in a good way if that makes any sense. it is told in the format of relaxation cassettes addressed to you, the listener, in a medical facility.
  4. alice isn’t dead - okay, so, i’m not really a horror person, but alice isn’t dead is too good for that to matter. it features absolutely stellar acting from jasika nicole, and brilliant writing from joseph fink. it follows a truck driver as she journeys across america to find her missing wife, and encounters strange and horrific things along the way.
  5. wolf 359 - this was my first non-night vale presents podcast, and boy did i like it! the characters are endearing and complex, the pacing of the story is perfection itself, and the soundtrack! hoo man, the soundtrack is awesome. the podcast follows the uss hephaestus station in orbit around the dwarf star wolf 359, and features crew antics, strange happenings, and feels.
  6. wooden overcoats - i have to be honest here, i love podcasts, but the us-centric nature of them made it really nice to find one made in the uk. as an english person, wooden overcoats was a refreshing touch of home. plus, it is very funny. it follows rudyard and antigone funn, funeral directors on the channel island of piffling, as they deal with the arrival of eric chapman, a new opposition to their monopoly on funerals.
  7. eos 10 - i love this podcast. i love it so much i can barely formulate words. it is funny, and heartwarming at times, with characters that i just want to bundle up and hug. it is about life in the medical section of space base eos 10, and details how the main characters deal with medical emergencies, addiction, deposed alien princes, and (alleged) terrorists.
  8. the penumbra podcast - another favourite! it has a great format, alternating stories about juno steel, a non-binary, bisexual, PI on mars, with other stories set in different locations, including but not limited to lesbian bandits in the old west and a disabled knight in a high fantasy setting. every episode is consistently stunning, and i guarantee you will fall head over heels for the characters.
  9. the bright sessions - you may have heard this summary before, but ‘superheroes go to therapy’ sums it up accurately. to be more precise, it follows the practice of dr joan bright, who provides ‘therapy for the strange and unusual’. the superheroes are known as ‘atypicals’ and the episodes detail how their powers affect their lives. it tackles themes of isolation, involuntary testing, ptsd, the difficulties of being a teenager and many others. the characters and acting are awesome!
  10. inkwyrm - this is an amateur podcast written and produced by high schoolers, and it. is. so. professional. the team have gone above and beyond to create an awesome podcast, with great characters! the voice-acting is really good and they’re great on lgbt+ representation. it follows the crew of inkwyrm magazine, an intergalactic fashion publication produced from a space station.
  11. marscorp - this is another one for my sorry english ass. the humour is very good, i have laughed out loud in several places! the setting is on point and i love the characters. (please, can i hug david knight?) it follows e.l. hobb, who is woken 400 years late from suspended animation and now has a degraded, sloppy first attempt at colonising mars to get into shape.
  12. alba salix, royal physician - so i only started this one today, but i’m loving it! i’m two episodes in and already know that the characters and worldbuilding are great. it’s clear the writers know their fantasy, as it effortlessly pokes fun at tropes of the genre. it’s laugh-out-loud funny and i can’t wait to listen to more. the podcast follows alba salix, physician to the king and queen as she deals with a helpful-to-the-point-of-annoyance fairy assistant and an apprentice who just wants to learn dark magic.

anonymous asked:

Can you explain why you think Jake Peralta has ADHD?

I’m actually really glad you asked because oooh boy, let met tell you, Jake Peralta, in my humble opinion as a fellow sufferer, is currently the single most obvious but sadly non confirmed (yet… one can still hope) fictional character with (most likely) undiagnosed ADHD out there. His strengths as well as his flaws all point towards him having the disorder.

So let me start with the good things:

- He’s a quick thinker! He thinks in unconventional ways with his mind taking leaps and turns whenever it feels like it. Often allowing him to solve cases in creative ways. … It also makes for interesting conversations most of the time.

- Using his impulsivity in a good way! When he figures something out, he’s usually the first one to get up AND DO SOMETHING.

- Excitability! Have you seen how his eyes lights up when he feels like he’s doing what he thinks is right? He becomes like a little hyperactive child again. Usually, adults with the disorder, aren’t as much outwardly hyperactive anymore as children are. Instead, this tends to turn into feelings of restlessness and gets internalized. But of course, in a show like this, it makes sense to show him like this.

- Hyperfocus! Die Hard, anyone?! That guy has had the same hyperfixation for years!!! And I bet, he frequently uses his hyperfocus capability to get things done, too. That is, if he’s interested enough, of course.

- His energetic personality! Brings some energy and passion into the work place, don’t you think? And also it’s how many adults with ADHD are perceived if they feel well-integrated and at ease with their surroundings. Always the one coming up with new ideas? That’s us!

Now onto the not so good stuff when you’re the one struggling with it:

- Again, impulsivity. Saying the first thing that comes to your mind, talking… A Lot, acting without thinking and without regard for consequences. As seen on the show, it has not always been the best “decision” for him.

- Mood swings! Unfortunately, many are not aware of this fact but in many cases, ADHD actually comes with fast and frequent mood swings. The smallest things can trigger intense emotional responses. Jake definitely has that as he tends to jump from “Life is meaningless!” to “I’m the greatest!” without a problem. Just solved a case? I’M SO HAPPY!!! Oh no, they got away with it? Why bother anymore…… Yeah, that…

- You know the episodes where he and Captain Holt are undercover as part of the Witness Protection Program and Holt points out how Jake seems depressed lately? Yeah, people with ADHD can way too easily fall into this mindset (mood swings, anyone?). With the absence of regular work to keep his fast-pacing mind occupied, it’s not a surprise that he starts feeling this way.

- Not able to handle boredom! He has always something going. Games, ideas, looking for new cases. He never slows down and seems to keep himself occupied at all times. Classic ADHD!

- The way he handles words and numbers, anyone? How he never reads books? Oh, and then his troubles with finances? His locker and desk looking… like that? Classic signs of troubles with organisation and attention to me.

- Easily discouraged! It can’t be denied that he hasn’t had an easy childhood. Together with the troubles with his father, ADHD could be a way to explain why he now is the way he is.

- Problems with low self-esteem (*cough* and definitely Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria)! Either he feels like THE BEST COP OUT THERE or he falls into this thinking pattern where you have trouble believing that people actually care about you. Probably something he should talk about in therapy, as he puts it himself.

Together with his tendency to procrastinate when it comes to boring stuff, his inability to express and cope with his feelings sometimes, his forgetfulness and not so ideal time management (for example, being late to work all the time),  I strongly believe that Jake Peralta has ADHD and should be written and confirmed as such (hey, it’s never too late!).
An episode focusing on him suspecting he has the condition and eventually seeing a specialist? I’d cry. Honestly.

Plus:
The fact that so many real people with the disorder relate to him??? Okay, that’s not actually relevant here but definitely something the writers should take into consideration. BUT, don’t feel bad if you don’t! Not everyone’s ADHD is the same! :)

Psst, you won’t believe how many times I sit there thinking “that’s so me!” while watching the episodes. There’s even more “evidence” sprinkled throughout the show. All the small details not listed aboved. It’s marvelous and oh-so-relatable.

And just imagine the many excited faces watching the show when a main character on a immensely popular show like this would be confirmed as being one of them! Just thinking of the tiny, tiny, TINY possibility puts me into happy stimming mode!!! It would also help increase awareness in those who may not know anything about it and help reduce prejudices ‘cause ding dong, ADHD is not a fake disorder and adults can have it, too. Surprise!

(P.S. Please also check out this awesome post!)

female awesome meme → [1/5] female character in a tv show
∟  I travelled across the world. From the ruins of New York, to the fusion mills of China, right across the radiation pits of Europe. And everywhere I went I saw people just like you, living as slaves! But if Martha Jones became a legend then that’s wrong, because my name isn’t important. There’s someone else. The man who sent me out there, the man who told me to walk the Earth. And his name is The Doctor. He has saved your lives so many times and you never even knew he was there. He never stops. He never stays. He never asks to be thanked. But I’ve seen him, I know him… I love him… And I know what he can do.

‘Many of the books that did feature Asian children were centered around cultural themes like Chinatown, Chinese New Year, or Chinese characters—which was great, but I was really looking for books that followed just the story about a really cool and awesome child that just happened to be Asian,’ Zhang explained in a video about his project.

Hey, so, remember how I wrote a book about an autistic girl who fights demons?

This one?

Well, it got featured in an author friend’s Best of British showcase and it’s currently sitting at #26 in YA urban fantasy on Amazon.

Unlike Lady Ruth - which is always in the steampunk #20 because not that many people write steampunk - HUNT is almost never close to the top #20!

So, if you haven’t picked it up, now would be the best time because it might actually get somewhere in the genre chart.

Oh, and for anyone who doesn’t know, it’s free!

So, here’s the download link! Go get your awesome urban fantasy book!

What? You’re still not convinced? Okay fine, more reasons:

  • It’s an #OwnVoices title
  • It’s the first book in a long-running series, so there is plenty to catch up on if you like it
  • The main character is also bisexual
  • Every single review from an autistic person is positive
  • (Ableists and biphobes are another story and are why I want to bleach my eyes…)
  • The main character gets attacked by a demon and finds out she has magic powers!
  • And one of her teachers turns out to be a ghost who was sent to help her out
  • She’s just, like, possessing someone
  • And there’s a new kid at school and he’s all mysterious
  • Bonus points if you figure out where that’s going
  • And the MC gets a crush on him but she’s all angst central and all I DON’T HAVE FEELINGS FEELINGS ARE STUPID
  • But then it’s like, no, you have to use your feelings to learn how to use your magic
  • And it’s like a whole thing about emotional maturity and friendships and MAGIC FRIENDSHIP SWORDS
  • Okay, I’m saying too much
  • Just go read it! It’s free!

Reasons to play Fire Emblem Echoes:

-it’s really really good, like 9.5/10 honestly, please play this game

-Berkut’s voice acting, jiminy chrystlermobile

-that legend of zelda simulator dungeon crawling tho 👀  👀  👀  👀  👀  👀

-the voice acting in general is just 👌 👌 👌 👌 👌 👌 👌 👌  phenomenal overall

-T H E   M U S I C ,   G O O D      G          O         D

-character designs are 12/10, no more creepy loli vibes and ladies have slightly less impractical armor (or at least its better than the previous two games)

-SO MANY GOOD FEMALE CHARACTERS. Like…ONE bad one and at least she doesn’t have a creepy/hyper-sexualized design

-CANON GAY CHARACTER (NOT TREATED LIKE GARBAGE)??? IN MY FIRE EMBLEM?????? (it’s more likely than you think!)

-HAVE I MENTIONED THE VOICE ACTING?…YES? I WILL MENTION IT AGAIN, THE VOICE ACTING IS INCREDIBLE

-The combat has been greatly simplified overall, but with the emphasis on terrain, it feels more challenging strategically, rather than simply overwhelming

-I forgot to mention the point-and-click aspects when you’re in a town, but THERE ARE AWESOME POINT-AND-CLICK ASPECTS WHEN YOU’RE IN A TOWN (you will love Alm and Celica’s goofy commentary in these segments, they are such dorks)

-The co-director literally grew up playing Gaiden with his father and was specifically chosen for that reason, so you KNOW this game has been handled with a great deal of passion and care, and it was evident long before I stumbled upon this fact

TL;DR: BLEASE BLAY FIRE EMBLEM ECHOES, u will not regretti spaghetti 🙏

↳ “this world is full of so many possibilities. each living thing has an entirely unique experience. the sights they see, the sounds they hear, the lives they live are so complicated…and so simple. i can’t wait for you to join them. “

reasons to read the upside of unrequited:

  • the main het romance and the side wlw romance are really, really sweet
  • like tooth-rottingly sweet, i can’t even think about them without grinning
  • the protag is straight, but pretty much every important person in her life is a queer woman. there’s seriously SO MUCH wlw representation. lesbians, bi women and pan women! queer women of colour! teen wlw and older wlw! wlw as mothers and wives and girlfriends! queer characters & relationships completely normalised and accepted by everyone!
  • also so many jewish characters, including a jewish protagonist and a jewish love interest
  • a fat protagonist who isn’t defined by her fatness
  • a really beautiful relationship between two sisters which explores the heartbreaking process of growing up and losing that closeness siblings have when they’re young
  • the most painfully realistic portrayal of what it’s like to be young and scared of rejection that i’ve ever read
  • cameo appearances by characters from becky’s first book! (which is all kinds of awesome and should also definitely be on your radar but it’s not necessary to read it first.)
  • the main character’s love interest says that kissing her was the best thing that has ever happened to his mouth, including cadbury mini eggs and honestly that’s the most romantic thing i’ve ever read
  • i mean the whole book is this adorable it’s nauseatingly cute and you should read it asap

I wanted to be excited about Annihilation because it looks awesome and that’s exactly the kind of movie i like…. but they whitewashed two of the main characters, one of them being the main protagonist. In the book she’s asian, and they cast Natalie Portman. The other character is native american, but they cast a white woman to play her as well. Is it so fucking hard to not whitewash characters?? How many times will I have to watch stories told from white women’s point of view, even when the story is originally told from a woc’s point of view?
