An Analysis of Bakugou’s Superiority Complex

I think you’re at least kind of right. Bakugou knows Midoriya has something that he lacks, and that causes him to feel bitterness towards Midoriya. It’s also hard for Bakugou to deal with the idea that Midoriya is more like All Might than he is. Although, I don’t Bakugou ever admired Midoriya back when Midoriya was Quirkless. I think he hated Midoriya because Midoriya makes him feel weak.

I think Bakugou’s hatred of Midoriya comes from him having a textbook case of superiority complex.

A superiority complex is “a psychological defense mechanism in which feelings of superiority counter or conceal feelings of inferiority.” In other words, Bakugou’s narcissism and feelings of superiority are due to him trying to cover for his inferior feelings. When Bakugou is feeling weaker than Midoriya in some cases, he’ll lash out against Midoriya and treat him as inferior in order to protect his feelings of weakness. Whether Midoriya realizes it or not, he picks on Bakugou’s insecurities, and, in order to protect his ego, Bakugou bullies Midoriya and tries to make himself feel superior.

I don’t think Bakugou’s superiority complex has always existed. I think Midoriya simply triggered it.

From when he was a young child, Bakugou has always been praised.

As his mom points out, all that praise for his talents has made him narcissistic.

Bakugou’s feelings of superiority come from all the praises during his childhood. That much is self-explanatory. Because of those praises, he has high expectations for himself.

Because Bakugou was praised for his Quirk and Midoriya had no Quirk, it was easy for Bakugou to come to the conclusion that Midoriya is inferior.

As a result, when Midoriya, someone who’s supposed to be beneath him, tries to help him, it’s a huge blow to Bakugou’s ego. Midoriya is supposed to be a Quirkless loser. Bakugou isn’t supposed to need his help.

Any time Midoriya tries to help Bakugou, it makes Bakugou feel weak. In order to feel less weak and to prove his superiority, he bullies Midoriya and brings him down. A superiority complex exists to cover for an inferiority complex. In Bakugou’s case, his inferiority complex comes from Midoriya making him feel weak and like he has lower self-worth. His superiority complex kicks in when he bullies and brings Midoriya down in order to feel stronger. If Bakugou can keep convincing himself that Midoriya is weak and that he’s superior, then Bakugou can feel strong. The weaker Midoriya is, the stronger Bakugou feels. It’s a vicious mindset that Bakugou develops over the years, and he can’t get over this mindset and acknowledge Midoriya’s strength easily.

Bakugou’s superiority complex is so bad that he even considers losing if it means not having to work with Midoriya. Working with Midoriya is just that big of a bruise to his ego, and it makes him feel stronger thinking Midoriya is not good enough to work with him.

He still has to mentally think Midoriya is a piece of shit even while working with him.

Bakugou has gotten into this mindset where he has to prove he’s better than Midoriya in order to make himself stronger. Midoriya makes him feel weak. In order to combat those feelings, Bakugou has to put Midoriya down.

Midoriya getting a Quirk from All Might and catching up to Bakugou in terms of ability makes Bakugou feel weak. That’s why he can’t accept Midoriya’s strength so easily. Midoriya is supposed to always be beneath Bakugou. When he catches up to Bakugou, that only pisses Bakugou off because that’s not the way it’s supposed to be. It’s a failure on Bakugou’s part to allow Midoriya to catch up to him.

Once Bakugou realizes Midoriya received All Might’s power, he thinks that means there must be something Midoriya has that Bakugou doesn’t. Midoriya did something right while Bakugou did something wrong. Since All Might chose Midoriya, a kid who was always weaker than Bakugou, it makes Bakugou feel weak. This aggravates his inferiority complex. Bakugou feels so weak that he blames himself for getting captured by the villains and leading to All Might’s downfall.

It doesn’t help Bakugou’s inferiority complex when he feels like Midoriya is always looking down on him. He hates it when people do that.

Just a reminder, if people feel weak or incompetent and they let that consume themselves, then they have an inferior complex.

An inferior complex isn’t always conscious. In Bakugou’s case, it was initially subconscious and then became more conscious after All Might lost his powers. His inferiority complex is aggravated by anyone who makes him feel weak. Midoriya especially makes it worse. However, other people have aggravated Bakugou’s inferiority complex as well.  

If someone stands against Bakugou, Bakugou wants that person to give it his or her all. If that person doesn’t, to Bakugou, that person is looking down on him and making him feel weak.

Todoroki does just that during the Sport’s Festival.

Bakugou’s superiority complex isn’t the only defense mechanism for his inferiority complex. Often he just gets REALLY PISSED OFF against the people who make him feel weak. For instance, this is what he’s like after his fight with Todoroki.

Bakugou also shuns anyone who makes him feel weak, like Todoroki for example.

There are other smaller examples of other students picking on Bakugou’s inferiority complex. Midoriya and Todoroki are just the big examples.

Not everyone with a superiority complex is as destructive as Bakugou. In fact, out of all the students with an inferiority complex, Bakugou seems to cope with it the worst since he hurts others in the process.

Aoyama is a milder example someone with of a superiority complex. Remember, a superiority complex is simply a defense mechanism for an inferiority complex.

People, like Aoyama, who feel insecure about themselves and let that insecurity consume them have an inferiority complex.

To cope with the inferiority complex, they act more superior. Although, in Aoyama’s case, instead of tearing people down like Bakugou, he simply boasts himself, tries to get attention, and acts like he’s amazing.

Aoyama acts like he loves himself, and he loves the attention. There could be an argument to be made that Aoyama doesn’t have a superiority complex since he doesn’t bring others down in order to make himself feel superior. However, he boasts how amazing he is, gets dramatic, and seeks attention as a way to cope with his feelings of inferiority.

Right now, Bakugou and Aoyama are the only students I can think of who have developed a superiority complex from their inferiority complex.

There are certainly other students who have an inferiority complex. It’s inevitable given the nature of being a hero. Being a hero is very competitive. In order to be successful, students need to stand out from their peers, and their peers in turn will will use their weaknesses against them. Villains also take advantage of any weakness students may have. It makes sense for students to feel like they’re inadequate compared to the amazing talent of their peers or to feel like they’re not as strong as they should be.

Interestingly enough, it doesn’t really look like Midoriya has an inferiority complex. An inferiority complex occurs when people become too focused on their deficiencies and start to feel intense lower self-worth. Midoriya doesn’t have that. Midoriya has usually been pretty pragmatic about his weaknesses and doesn’t let them make him think he’s inadequate or worth less.

Bakugou’s bullying never caused Midoriya to give up or feel worth less. Midoriya has always thought Bakugou is amazing. As a result, Bakugou became a role model for Midoriya instead of someone who pushes him down.

Hearing that Togata could have been the successor for One for All and that Nighteye thinks Togata would make a better successor doesn’t make Midoriya think he is unworthy of One for All. Midoriya still thinks he’s worthy of One for All and will push himself to prove it.

Keep in mind, Midoriya not having an inferiority complex does not mean he isn’t sometimes humble or hard on himself. He’s not cocky. He will have moments where he doesn’t take credit for his achievements or is disappointed in himself. That’s part of human nature. 

Here, Midoriya is giving others credit for his achievements. 

When he says this, he’s not saying he doesn’t deserve to be where he is or that he’s not deserving of his Quirk. He’s simply giving people who have helped him throughout is life credit. He wants to be the number one hero for their sake as well as his own. That’s not an inferiority complex. 

During the moments Midoriya is hard on himself, it’s usually because it’s the rational conclusion, such as in the example shown below. 

All Might tells Midoriya that he can only use to five percent of his power. Midoriya reasonably thinks that doesn’t sound like a lot. Midoriya isn’t being unreasonably hard on himself or thinks he’s weak. He’s just coming to the rational conclusion based on what he knows. Midoriya knows he needs to work on controlling his Quirk without breaking his bones. Midoriya feeling like he has a lot to work on doesn’t mean he thinks he’s a lesser being or has low self-esteem. 

People having moments where they’re hard on themselves or think they can do better is normal. An inferiority complex is when those inferior feelings happen all the time whether subconsciously or not. Bakugou often feels weak, and this manifests into the angry and mean-spirited behavior we know. Bakugou always subconsciously or consciously thinks he’s weak. It’s a more general feeling rather than one that happens occasionally. Midoriya doesn’t always think he’s not good enough or not deserving. If he’s not good enough in a certain area, then he’ll come to the rational conclusion for that particular area. An inferiority complex is a general feeling of inferiority rather than the occasional moments of feeling inferior. It makes people feel like they’re worth less overall. It’s a neurotic condition, meaning people with an inferiority complex worry frequently about their inferiority, even when it’s irrational or not important. The negative attitudes at times are irrational. 

Take Momo’s inferiority complex for example. She is very sensitive to her shortcomings from the Sports Festival. She is very hard on herself for not living up to her high expectations. She even goes as far as saying she “hasn’t left behind any noteworthy results.” Even though Momo is a very rational thinker, this is a VERY harsh criticism on her part and has affected her attitude since then. 

Momo’s negative feelings about herself occur when she compares herself to Todoroki. She starts feeling not good enough and loses confidence in herself. An inferiority complex affects the general perception and behavior one has towards himself or herself. 

Her inferiority complex prevents her from speaking up about a plan because she thinks she’s not good enough to share her idea. 

She thinks so little of herself that she comes to the conclusion that if Todoroki’s plan didn’t work, then hers can’t work either. 

An inferiority complex affects the behavior of individuals. In Momo’s case, hers makes her more passive because she feels like she’s not good enough to voice her opinion. In Aoyama’s case, it makes him more self-centered in order to compensate for his inferior feelings. In Bakugou’s case, it makes him become a bully because bringing people down makes him feel more superior. 

Midoriya not having an inferior complex makes sense. Midoriya is supposed to be Bakugou’s foil. Bakugou’s weaknesses are supposed to be Midoriya’s strengths.

If both boys have an inferiority complex, then they don’t make that good of foils. While Bakugou has feelings of weakness that he lets consume him. Midoriya doesn’t let his flaws make him feel weak or insecure and tries to push himself to be number one anyway because he believes he’s worthy of being number one.

Keep in mind, not everyone with an inferiority complex lets it hold them back or has harmful ways to cope with the inferiority complex like Bakugou does. An inferiority complex is simply a constant feeling of being inadequate and not measuring up. Some people with an inferiority complex use it to improve the skills they think they lack. It can be a driving force to improve. Bakugou, in a way, has also used his inferiority complex to improve himself. Unfortunately, he also tries to handle his feelings of weakness by lashing out and bringing others down.

The worst way to cope with an inferiority complex is to develop a superiority complex from it. People with a superiority complex still have low self-esteem like others with an inferiority complex. However, they also bring down others in order to cope with their low self-esteem and end up being isolated from people as a result.

This week has been awful so I’ve been making a list of things in Mass Effect that make me happy. Just because.

Blueliner was pretty cute for a superhero, but then again so was Derek Nurse…


Dex had known his day was going to be awful. Nothing bad had actually happened that morning, but there was that feeling in the pit of his stomach. That all too familiar feeling that meant he’d run into him today, which meant Dex left his place wary of everything and everyone.

He was right to be suspicious.

Dex’s face was pressed down into the disgusting carpet, a heavy boot resting on his back. The boot, sitting heavily on an old bruise, was an uncomfortable pressure that got worse the longer it was there. He crushed the urge to shift and lay stiffly on the ground. It wasn’t even lunch yet and his day had gone to shit.

“Hurry up, Chad! That’s enough for now. We gotta get out of here before-“ 

The Chad at the till let out a cry of “Chad!” as the boot, and attached Chad, flew off of Dex and into the wall. He was wrestled to the ground, quickly cuffed, and Money Chad darted for the bank entrance. Before he made it beyond a few steps, Money Chad was trussed up like his partner. It was over in the blink of an eye.

Honestly, what was wrong with these guys.

Unfortunately, Freyja seems to be quite allusive in our sources, especially in the Prose Edda. Her brother Freyr gets far more direct attention in them. In the sources that I am most familiar with, here is where she appears in them (from a database post I am currently working on):

  • Freyja: Vanir, Fertility Goddess (multiple roles):
    • The Prose Edda (Faulkes trans.):
      • Gylfaginning: pages 24, 29, 30, 35, (36), and 50.
      • Skaldskarpamal: pages 59, 60, 75-8, (85), 86, 94-5, 98-9, (119), and 157.
    • The Poetic Edda:
      • Seeress’s Prophecy: stanza 26 (kenning).
      • Grimnir’s Sayings: stanza 14.
      • Loki’s Quarrel: prose; stanzas 30 and 32.
      • Thrym’s Poem: stanzas 3, 8, and 11ff.
      • Oddrun’s Lament: stanza 9.

I will provide some information directly in this post, though, because some of these texts are less easily accessible. I will also share the bits that contain the most helpful information contained in those texts.


THE PROSE EDDA: (1.)

Snorri Sturluson does not give us a lot of detail about Freyja, but he does provide a basis for us to work with. Honestly, the Prose Edda is a bit of a condensed snapshot of Norse mythology – a slice of time and a slice of place. Without spending too long on source-related debates, here is some of the most satisfying bits of information from that text:

  • Freyja is the daughter of Njord, and the sister of Freyr.
  • Freyja, along with Freyr, is “beautiful in appearance and mighty.”
  • Freyja is “the most glorious of the Asynjur (goddesses).”
  • Her dwelling is called Folkvangar.
  • Whenever she rides to battle, she takes half of the slain. The other half goes to Odin. (This is pretty big).
  • Her hall is called Sessrumnir, and it is “large and beautiful.”
  • She travels in a chariot drawn by two cats.
  • In terms of prayer, she is the most approachable goddess.
  • She is “very fond of long songs” and it is “good to pray to her concerning love affairs.”
  • She is married to Od.
  • She has a daughter named Hnoss, who is also beautiful.
  • Od went off to travel, and Freyja weeps because he is gone, and “her tears are red gold.”
  • Freyja has many names because of her travels in search for Od: Mardoll, Horn, Gefn, and Syr.
  • Freyja owns Bringsing’s necklace.
  • Freyja was once almost married off to a giant.
  • Freyja can apparently grant people a “falcon shape.” She does this for Loki when he must go retrieve Idunn.
  • Freyja is bold. She was the only one who was brave enough to serve drinks to a giant named Hrungnir.
  • Later Snorri includes more of her names: Thrungva and Skjalf. He also mentions a second daughter named Gersemi.

THE POETIC EDDA: (2.)

The reference in the Seeress’s Prophecy is a bit vague, but worth bringing up. I have not spent a considerable amount of time carefully contemplating the verse, but it clearly has an important role in Freyja’s story. I believe most internet it as how Freyja was given as a hostage to end the war between the Æsir and Vanir, but since I am not confident enough to say that as ‘fact’, I’ll just give you the stanza itself:

“Then all the Powers went to the thrones of fate,
the sacrosanct gods, and considered this:
which people had trouble the air with treachery,
or given Od’s girl to the giant race.”

Other information regarding Freyja in the Poetic Edda:

“Folkvang is the ninth, and there Fryja fixes
allocation of seats in the hall;
half the slain she chooses every day, 
and half Odin owns.” (Grim., 14)

  • Loki calls Freyja a witch, suggesting that she dabbles with magic. The Vanir, in general, have connections with magic.
  • Loki suggests that Freyja and her brother Freyr had an affair.
  • The “falcon shape” she can grant is also referred to as a “feather-shirt.” She loans this to Loki so he can help Thor retrieve Mjolnir. It allows the bearer to fly.
  • Freyja is often the object of undesired marriages, often with giants. Yet, she is also often independent and bold enough to object them.

Freyja plays a pretty central role in the Song of Hyndla, but the information about her is not very direct. It would be best to read this poem in its entirety before drawing any conclusions about Freyja from it.


HEIMSKRINGLA: (3.)

This is another work by Snorri Sturluson, but it is treated much differently than the Gylfaginning. From a down-to-Earth perspective, Snorri retells the tale of the gods in an earthly sense. Here are some of the portions about Freyja in Ynglinga saga:

“Njord’s daughter was Freyja. She was a sacrificial priestess. She was the first to teach the Æsir black magic, which was customary among the Vanir.”

There is also this:

“Freyja kept up the sacrifices, for she was the only one of the gods left alive, and she became the best known, so that all noble women came to be called by her name, just as now the name frúvur (‘ladies’) is used. Similarly everyone was called freyja (‘mistress’) of what she possessed, and húsfreyja (‘mistress of a household’) if she is in charge of a dwelling. Freyja was rather fickle. Her husband was called Od. Her daughters were called Hnoss and Gersimi. They were very beautiful. The most precious treasures are called by their names.”


FORNALDARSÖGUR: (4.)

These are sagas about legendary heroes and kings, and a great deal of mythological material gets tied up within them. There are likely others, but I do not have copies of all of them, so I am limited to knowing only of references made in my own small collection. I would share the reference for Freyja that appears in Bosi and Herraud, but it is not very satisfying. All that is said is that there was a toast to Freyja on a wedding night, but little more. Again, there are likely a few other Fornaldarsögur that contain information about Freyja, but they are not my specialty. In time I will hunt down more.


ÍSLENDINGASÖGUR: (5.)

These sagas are a bit different from the Fornaldarsögur. They are much ore realistically toned, in that there is much less supernatural activity taking place. They are still good sources for information, though! Even in terms of mythology. There is a decent amount of information preserved in these texts about rituals and practices associated with certain figures, such as Freyja. Of course, there are problems with the sources that need to be addressed before taking certain bits of information too far, but that is not a concern until you really start to dig and contemplate the text.

  • In Egil’s Saga, a woman named Thorgerd says this: “I have had no evening meal, nor shall I do so until I go to join Freyja.” 
    • This is interesting because it suggests that a woman, at least, can choose to go to Freyja after death. Given further context, there may be a way that she suspects she might be able to make this happen, but regardless there seems to be an acceptance that Freyja has privilege over dead, and not just the half she gets that are slain in battle. Food for thought.

The information in The Saga of the People of Fljotsdal is even less fulfilling, at least when looking to learn more about Freyja herself. If you are interested in the attitudes of Icelanders in regards to conversion, then more information awaits you in the saga.


In the end, there really is not much else to be found regarding Freyja. Most of what we know comes from the Eddas, but there is information scattered around elsewhere. I have not even included archaeological materials and runestone in this situation, but that is because I am a medieval literature kind of guy. Despite the lack of information, I hope what I have shared with you turns out to be helpful in some way or another. Surly something will be of interest to you.

Otherwise, I hope for the best in your endeavors. Freyja is a rewarding subject.

The faves change from day to day, from moment to moment and from gif to gif (thanks to amazing gifers like @elennemigo, @221bcumberb, @anidoorkitty and @whenisayrunrun ) luckily you have caught me on a day where I’ve been making clips for a future post and have come down with a case of CBF! So being in this state of mind, I think it’s a perfect time to do this list so here it is.

 *warning long post*

1. Richard iii

Bc takes us through the rise and fall of Richards thirst for the crown. From the moment we see young Richard cowering in horror while watching his brother being murdered, to the minute he decides to kill the king, not for his family, not for revenge but for his own dream of sovereignty, and to witnessing Henry Tudor stabbing the last breath out of Richard and proclaiming the “the dirty dog is dead”.

Bc delivers Richards devilish, smooth talking and deliciously devious dialogue with such ease that you can’t help but kind of root for Richard at times because he makes you believe that his Machiavellian dealings are for the greater good. His bone chilling cradling of his newborn nephew, his wooing of the widow of the man he killed. Are that of a man who just wants to be respected, loved and seen for his use rather than be mocked for his disability that he carries on his back.

Bc’s talent of tears and rage and downright madness was just PERFECT. I fell in love with his Richard iii. I felt pity, sadness, attraction to his wicked determination (as terrible as his deeds were) and most of all, affection for his deformity that was the catalyst for his anger and need to prove to the people around him that he could be a normal man that was capable of being a king. Bc’s Richard iii was the best possible example of a master class in acting. Proving yet again that Bc is the best actor of his generation.

2. Sherlock 

The greatest disappointment to come out of BBC Sherlock was the reaction of a group of fans who tried to destroy what MG and SM created because of a certain expectation they were invested in. Most people who hated S4 missed out on what the entire point of this version of Sherlock was about and that was to introduce us to Sherlock Holmes before he became known as Sherlock Holmes. Bc became a star in 90 minutes and the ACD canon would never be the same again.

Sherlock starts off as a man with a fortress of coldness who insists he has no need for friends or relationships, armed with a lifetime of brotherly advice that caring was not an advantage. But once Dr. John Watson comes into play we start to see that fortress slowly melt and the addition of the people who would become his Baker Street family, Molly Hooper, Mrs. Hudson, Mary Watson and Lestrade, we begin to see that Sherlock was so full of emotions and the capacity to care, that he wanted to care, he just didn’t know how to care. Bc’s portrayal of the world’s only consulting detective was brilliant and beautiful. Bc help make brainy the new sexy. He also made Sherlock’s drugged out alter ego, Shezza, look sexy too. Of course it helped that the writing and the location of this modern day Sherlock were also brilliant. But looking at those cheekbones and lips carrying a fluffy head of hair that you wish you could run your fingers through, just once! That perfect silhouette of a man dressed in the finest suits. The purple shirt of sexiness, the black suit, the blue shirt of sexiness!! Ok sorry I got CBF for a second there…

What I really meant to say was that Bc’s acting brought new life into this 100 year old literary character and it certainly made me invest my own feelings into these characters that I wouldn’t have any interest in. Bc’s Sherlock was rude, cocky, manipulative, arrogant and flawed, but you loved each of those characteristics because Bc made him lovable even at Sherlock’s worst, he took you through the whole range of emotions and that wasn’t just with one series, it frequently meant each episode! The fact that we got to watch Sherlock grow into a man capable of being a best friend, a kind and caring human being who tried his best to protect his friends, and a man who learned how to forgive and not judge the past mistakes of those around him. Because after all we just might be human. Even Sherlock Holmes. I am forever grateful to the Mofftiss for creating this show and for giving Bc a chance to show the world, what the London stage and various other people in the industry had already saw in him. For me the only Sherlock Holmes is the BBC version that could only have been pulled off by the talents and efforts of Benedict Cumberbatch.

3. Christopher Tietjens

My first thought is always I heart Christopher Tietjens, because I really do. He was the last of a dying breed. He had 2 women who tried to “burst him out of his glass cabinet” the wife who failed because she didn’t deserve him and the woman whom he really loved and waited for, the woman HE deserved. Christopher survived his name being dragged through the mud, a wife who socially embarrassed not only herself but made him look like a cuckold. 

He survived the war, not because he was lucky, but because he wanted to live to come back to the only woman who loved him and accepted him for going along with the parade. Bc’s Christopher Tietjens was a stoic beautiful man when he needed to be, and man enough to cry when the women he loved tugged or threw daggers at his heart.

I know I overuse the word beautiful when it comes to Bc’s acting but Chrissy was so painfully beautiful that all you wanted to do was give him a hug and take him back to Groby so he could live out the rest of his life as an english country gentleman. Another perfect performance from Benedict!

4. Alan Turing

This should have won Bc’s his first Oscar. If you want to truly see what Bc’s talent is capable of you don’t start with Sherlock, you start with this role. Benedict was able to conjure up the spirit of Alan in this performance that even Turing’s own family was blown away by his portrayal. Bc’s ability to display the eccentricities of Alan, the deep emotional bond and love he had for both Christophers and of course Bc’s master class of acting for easily portraying a genius mathematician at work.

The tragic ending that cut Alan’s life short, made us all want to learn more about Turing and his work. It made us angry at how this man was treated as an enemy, instead of a war hero who helped saved millions of lives. Bc reached into our hearts and brains with his charismatic, tragic, beautiful portrayal of Alan Turing.

5. Doctor Strange

IF ever a role was so perfectly cast it probably was Benedict as Dr. Stephen Strange. Not only does he come super close to looking like the comic book hero that was created over 30 yrs ago, he is able to adopt the persona of an arrogant and brilliant doctor who gets into a car accident that cuts his career short and with all hope lost, seeks treatment at a place that not only gives him the cold hard truth about himself, but it teaches him that in order to grow and learn he would have to open his eye to other realities.  

Stephen learned that all is not lost and there are other ways to help people, most of all, to help himself. Bc is so bloody perfect as Doctor Strange that upon first viewing, I just sat there and cried. I was so proud of him because even though I had very limited knowledge about this comic book character, he convinced me that HE was that superhero that the world needed. Benedict made it all look effortlessly. The American accent, the physicality of being Doctor Strange was just AMAZING. Bc has that ability to make himself into anything that is called for. As someone once said, young, old, strong, weak, whatever you call for that character to be, Benedict can play it and play it so well you don’t even know he’s acting. Not only did it convince us his fan base, but he basically won over the entire comic book community as well as the general public. 

Bc made Doctor Strange into a blockbuster that got overall positive reviews. That is the power of Benedict’s talent. You talk about a good script, you can talk about a good director, but that only goes hand in hand with an actor that can pull it all off and by god did Bc pull it off!

My Comments: REALLY fun missing scene-type fic with a great Keith perspective. It’s FUN and it does a great job of fleshing everyone out, and there are some truly fantastic ideas. I’m really enjoying this one.

My Comments: SO CUTE. I love lions-as-actual-lions, and this is especially good because the lions just want to make their pilots feel better. So it’s tiny lion shenanigans and oodles of H/C. MY FAVE COMBO.

My Comments: Thace/Ulaz. I adore this characterization of the Blade, especially Ulaz as a scientist who is very smart and methodical, but also has almost too much heart and compassion. Baby Keith is perfect, and I was very satisfied with the ending, though I’m happy there are more stories in the series, too.

Did you see Rogue One? (Spoilers)

In addition to important conversations about representation, something that’s stayed with me about Rogue One is that last scene. You know the one: Darth Vader just kind of walking down a hallway.

The entire story up to that point was one movie and it ended with a beautiful and heartbreaking scene on a beach. Then, the second movie began. We didn’t really need to see this addition to the story — we could have easily guessed what happened next — but Disney / Lucasfilm gave it to us anyway and I am so glad they did.

I mean, you kind of knew how that bit was going to end, one way or the other, and yet it was still so enjoyable and, I think, legitimately scary. Why?

It’s a short horror film.

I think a lot about how many of the best movies are camouflaged genre films and I’m sure I’ve written some way-too-long posts on Facebook about it more than once, but let me start with a different point about that.

Jurassic ParkTerminator (and to be fair, T2 as well). Both great movies. Something that always strikes me about the recent sequels / soft reboots / whatever… is that they forget the originals were at their heart, horror films — or at least relied heavily on horror tropes — borrowing stylistically and thematically.

I mean, okay, I’m no horror or genre movie expert, but if I remember correctly, as a kid, Terminator was always in the “horror” section of the video store.

Point is, Jurassic Park even has campy jump-scares.

And even though the T-Rex runs after the heroes, the protagonists are in a Jeep — so the speed is relative… and it’s effectively a nightmare hallway scene, where they can’t quite seem to get away as the killer slowly gains on them (more on that concept later). They don’t shy away from it at all.

Jurassic WorldTerminator Genisys? They’re action movies. They traded in these kind of beautiful tension-building scenes borrowed from genre movies for robot explosions and a T-Rex fighting a genetically engineered super raptor. They abandoned telling the story well — in other words, matching how the story is told (form) to what the story is about (function) in favor of trying to make “a wild ride” or whatever.

Back to Rogue One. That last scene is one of the only times I’ve ever found Darth Vader legitimately scary on screen (O.K. maybe the ending of Empire — but not like this). I was so impressed with this scene. It could have easily gone the way of the prequels — Vader boomeranging his lightsaber all over the place, force-leaping half a mile, performing needless pirouettes, but instead, he just walks forward.

Which — kind of unrelated — is tonally similar to what I loved about the 2003 Clone Wars animated series. General Grievous, ironically unlike the weird coughing cartoon character we got in the movie, was a badass killer. He was legitimately scary. And the way they put together the scenes that centered him as a villain really emphasized that. They borrowed tropes and stylistic elements from horror.

Vader doesn’t move fast because he doesn’t need to (of course, canonically he can’t really). He just plods forward, methodically killing everyone in his path. Tell me you don’t see the T-800 in that. Or Jason. Or Michael Myers. I love it.

The scene is a perfect, self-contained piece of art. The protagonist has a clearly defined goal with an item (a classic McGuffin) tied to that goal. That one rebel needs to get the disc down the hallway and through the door, to safety.

Here’s what makes it a short horror film:

The door gets stuck. The lights go out. Smoke and mist rises. The antagonist — a killer villain — appears with a goal in antithesis to the protagonist’s. Between the two, there’s a group of protectors. They fight, the protagonist and his allies try everything they can to stop or escape the villain and achieve their goal until, as we build to the climax, a dramatic question becomes clear. Will the protagonist sacrifice his life to achieve his goal, or will he succumb to fear allowing the villain to prevail? He pushes the disc through the crack in the door, he tells his last ally to run — to carry on without him — and he sacrifices himself for the greater good.

Again, this scene has a really simple yet elegant structure, executed flawlessly. Protagonist wants to deliver the disc to safety: Thesis. Antagonist wants to prevent the delivery of the disc: Antithesis. Despite complications, obstacles, and ultimate sacrifice, the disc is moved to safety: Synthesis.

The protagonist achieves his goal, though not how he wanted to. Strengthening that journey, he had to sacrifice what he wanted (personal survival) to achieve what was needed (survival of the disc and therefore, the group).

We knew that would be the conclusion all along because we’ve seen A New Hope, but I think it’s still compelling because it’s so perfectly structured and so well executed — the form of the scene perfectly matching the function.

Even better, this scene is thematically a microcosm of the entire story that just came before it.

Using horror tropes and borrowing from that genre works so perfectly in this scene because that’s exactly what it is. It’s a survival horror. The protagonist in this scene is stuck in a confined space, trying to escape while being hunted by a supernatural predator. What about that doesn’t lend itself to horror?

More major releases should embrace this philosophy. Hollywood needs to respect the intelligence of audiences a little more and stop jamming stories into whatever genre they’re determined to make. Instead, let the story guide stylistic choices. They shouldn’t be at odds; they should reinforce each other. That’s when a movie becomes art.

Let’s circle back to that idea about the slowly advancing killer. This may deserve it’s own article, but personally, I can’t separate these ideas.

The more I thought about this scene, the more I also got to thinking about Vader in this scene and why that slow, plodding advance is such a scary thing as well as why it ends up in so many horror movies. I mean, aside from how common it is in the history of genre movies, one of the most acclaimed indie movies of the last few years is a horror called It Follows where the whole premise and plot boils down to that one thing: a slow but endlessly advancing death.

I remembered something I read online a while back about human beings (originally mentioned in the context of how human beings usually portray ourselves in Sci-fi). Here are some screenshots of those posts…

Whoever thought up that last scene must have known about these ideas. And much like the scene itself is a microcosm of the movie, the choices made in regard to how Vader attacks his enemies are a microcosm of what makes the scene beautiful. The writers didn’t make the flashy choice, or the bigger, badder, more epic choice. They made the right artistic choice. They made the human choice.

So, in addition to everything else, why is that short film so good and so scary? I think it’s because this method of hunting is distinctly human. For all his force powers, the scariest thing about Darth Vader in that scene is that he just. Keeps. Coming.

Peacock and Other Theories

I thought about it on my way home and so I’ve basically jumped off the turtle!Nino bandwagon and jumped on the peacock!Nino bandwagon.

I have a lot of reasons for doing so. 

One, as was stated in my previous post, Nino shares a color scheme with Duusu–that being red and blue–as well as the eye print theme - 

This is important because a majority of the other miraculous holders share color schemes and themes with their kwami - 


Pinks and blacks (cuz Tikki seems more like a deep pink than red), plus, Tikki has freckles like Mari if you look closely enough at the image above. Additionally, Marinette has spots on her clothes.  


Adrien only has a black shirt, but his eyes are green like Plagg’s and his shirt stripes, while also having yellow, are variations of green and purple (the inside of Plagg’s mouth is purple). 

Alya has oranges in her shirt and has a general warm color theme in her hair and eyes. Also, depending on Trixx’s final design, the kwami will either have matching yellow eyes to Alya’s (as it looks like it does above) or purple eyes as was in what was initially announced of the fox design. Either one works as Alya has purple accents in her shirt. Also, she has that beauty spot and Trixx has little spots above their eyes. 

Yellow and black, stripes, blue eyes. Pretty obvious I think. 


Furthermore, I had previously argued that Nino looks more like a turtle than a peacock as far as his facial features, but I’m not so sure anymore. Nino’s nose has always been rather exaggerated and I presumed to think he looked like a turtle because of how his smile turned out, but I think it would be silly not to admit that Nino’s nose is rather beak-ish. 

And while his hair could look rather shellish–in reference to a turtle–it could also be flat like a peacock’s. With the symbolic adornment of Nino’s hat in place of the sticky-up feathers. 

The other miraculous users look respectively like their “animals” too, as I’ve pointed out before. I don’t have comparison pictures of Mari and Chloe, because they don’t look like actual bugs, but their features are small and “buggy,” so that’s worth considering. Also -

So yeah, anyway. Peacock!Nino. I know the peacock we’ve seen is clearly feminine, but if it is Mama Agreste, I don’t see her as being the active peacock miraculous holder. She doesn’t fit the age demographic for being a hero and the kids already have their teacher/guide in Master Fu. I would imagine that scan is of the past or a short time period of use, or is symbolic. Whether it’s through Adrien or Mama Agreste, I think Nino has a good chance of eventually getting the peacock, especially with that eye shirt he has as well as being Adrien’s best friend. 

Like usual, this is all speculation and really holds no basis in canon. It’s all based on my observations, as usual, which change depending on the info released, but as of now, this is just an idea I had floating around in my head. I also think it would be really cool to see Nino sporting something as flamboyant as the peacock. He’s so chill, I assume he would pull it off swimmingly, especially since he’s already a performer :D

That first moment Mon-el arrived on the show, I knew what was going to happen. I know they were going to pair him with Kara. Say what you want, but I knew. I’ve seen it before, on so many shows it’s unbelievable. The white, male love interest seems to be the standard for ruining good, family shows like Supergirl and Once Upon a Time.

Kremlin Annihilation Week: Day 3 - Take 2

Okay, with less bitterness this time.

I know everyone’s gonna say 2x13 because it is legitimately the worst. So I’ll just start with 2x12 and explain why I think they are all The Literal Worst.

2x12: Kremlins like to point at this episode and say that it’s a really good representation of how good Man-Hell is because he doesn’t force Kara to return his feelings after he rejects her. Well, I reject that notion. Here’s my reasons why.
- Comes back to CatCo to ask out her co-workers, the same one he was so easily able to manipulate before and makes sure Kara sees him and knows why he’s there (”Well, you rejected me so I’m moving on”). This is what? A day after he confessed his feelings? Yeah, no, he’s not trying to move on. He’s trying to make Kara jealous, it’s a pretty classic move on the part of every fuckboy everywhere.
- Proceeds to spend the entire date he takes Eve on talking about Kara, ensuring that Kara hears about that the next day and thus has to hear yet again how he feels about her and that he’s CONSTANTLY thinking about her. That’s not stalker-ish at all.
- The club soda thing? Same idea. He never drinks club soda before or after this episode (that they show us) and if he does, it’s certainly not exclusively club soda and not for a week straight. So he intentionally does it to get Kara’s attention. Why would he be doing that after he seems to say it’s okay that she doesn’t like him back? Well, to remind her that he’s there and CONSTANTLY THINKING ABOUT HER AGAIN! And, again, the information is passed to her through a third party, so the emotional manipulation is subtle and can’t really be traced back to him as intentional.

2x14: Skipping 2x13 cuz the things there are obvious and everyone else will say them (has said them). This is supposed to be the beginning of their “star-crossed” relationship and it isn’t off to a good start.
- When she brings him flowers and coffee in the morning, he just sort-of stares at them and says it was “gentlemanly” of her to do so (rigid gender roles much?) and then dumps the flowers in a lamp shade (DO NOT TELL ME IT WAS A STUPID CULTURAL ERROR KREMLINS, HE KNOWS THAT’S NOT WHERE FLOWERS GO, THERE IS A 100000% CHANCE THEY HAD FUCKING VASES ON DAXAM) with zero consideration. Very kind and gracious.
- He tells Kara he wished he had been able to wake up with her even though he knows that she was out doing superhero stuff and getting him flowers and coffee and literally shows up like within a minute of him waking up. He needs to stop trying to get her to be ashamed of being a superhero, I swear to god. Being a hero is not about being selfish.
- There’s the obvious breaking his promise to her to keep their relationship quiet and then announcing it to the ENTIRE DEO and then never apologizing for it.
- Pulling her aside while she is happy to tell her his suspicions about Jeremiah being a traitor. Dude, let her be happy. This is her dad. Don’t try to spoil this reunion, it’s literally something they’ve been working toward for almost a year now. If you have suspicions, take them to someone else, someone like Winn who doesn’t have an emotional connection to Jeremiah. But honestly? Don’t say anything at all until you have valid proof, demon boy. It’s literally just you being paranoid and trying to isolate Kara from her family with your “suspicions.” 
- Again, the breaking of the promise to give Jeremiah the benefit of the doubt and then confronting him at the family dinner. Intentionally. Out of… jealousy? Again? Since he was getting all weird about Jeremiah being allowed back to the DEO so quickly even though they kept a much closer watch on him? Was that seriously his motivation in this scene? Fuckwad.
- That half-assed apology after Kara calls him out on him not listening to her (for the second episode in a row). Also, asking for her forgiveness for it immediately, despite having done literally nothing to earn it yet.
- Getting Winn to help him FIND evidence against Jeremiah and spy on him. Without telling anyone else, including J’onn, the head of the DEO. Granted, that sort-of helped since they were able to catch him doing the download thing, but like… why didn’t they LOOK at the download thing before they decided to bring it to Kara AGAIN? They’re able to do so in just the next scene, so why force Kara onto their side before they have any ACTUAL evidence from the data Jeremiah downloaded? Jesus Fucking Christ, these people are idiots.
- Having to go to Winn to ask what he should do to be a better boyfriend (no, he does not get brownie points for recognizing he’s been a bad boyfriend, kremlins). Needing the only other straight white guy on the show to tell him what Kara’s been telling him since 2x13 that she needs. Literally needing to be told that he should be listening to his girlfriend.
- ONLY being kind and attentive to Kara after he has been proven RIGHT and she is in an extremely vulnerable state, emotionally. She is in a more “submissive” position now and he can be in the more traditionally “dominant” role that he is clearly more comfortable with. Rigid gender roles again anyone?

2x15: Thankfully he wasn’t in this much, but what was in it was still bad. Here’s why.
- Not listening to why Kara is hesitating over posting the blog article and thus losing her job. Didn’t we just have two episodes about him listening to Kara and what she needs? No? Oh, well, must’ve just been my imagination.
- Pushing Kara to make a decision that will lose her her job, the one place where she can go without him following her. Intentionally pushing her to isolate herself more so she has to spend more time with him and pretending it’s support.
- Showing up to presumably cheer her up with food he has already started eating.
- Not being sympathetic at all when he comes back and she’s upset over losing her job. Telling her that she can just get another job. Not apologizing for his part in pushing her into the decision that led to her losing her job. Not apologizing for not listening to why she loves her job and didn’t want to lose it BEFORE he pushed her into doing something that would cost her her job.
- Kara saying that Supergirl is not part of “who she is” but only “what she can do.” “What she can do” as Supergirl is only doable because she’s a Kryptonian. Those powers, and her identity as Supergirl, are one of her last links to her Kryptonian heritage, a link she will always have with her, unlike Clark or her mother’s hologram or even the Fortress of Solitude. Her powers are A PART OF HER and thus, so is Supergirl. Supergirl is Kara Zor-El. Reporter at CatCo is Kara Danvers.
- Kara saying that being Supergirl and having Wonder Bread would be enough for her. If we go by what the narrative says, that Supergirl ISN’T truly who she is, and she’s lost the one thing that she pinned her real identity to (her job), then she has now just declared that her entire identity is as HIS girlfriend. She no longer exists without Man-Ew because without him, she has nothing, if we go by the narrative.

2x16: Some pretty obvious stuff here, so I’ll keep this one brief.
- I don’t believe for a second he didn’t recognize Rhea’s voice or the ship which means he allowed Kara to go into battle against that ship likely knowing she wouldn’t win because he didn’t tell her pertinent information (this is a pattern, isn’t it? It’s the same shit he pulled in 2x13 when giving her all of the information didn’t get him what he wanted). 
- Refusing to tell Kara the truth about his identity and why the Daxamites were here. Clearly intending to go to his parents and tell them off and come back without anyone being the wiser and coming up with some sort of lie as to why they wanted him.
- Calling himself a “hero of Earth” as if he gives a shit about Earth and humanity in general. As if he has in any way earned the right to call himself a hero at all. Period.
- Not actually speaking out against slavery and leaving that to Kara. Oh, yeah. He’s changed just because he said “Daxam was never great.” I totally believe it.
- “This is the point in the movie where the girl forgives the guy for whatever dumb stuff he’s done.” This is his first scene since Kara sort-of broke up with him, so he obviously has done nothing to EARN forgiveness yet.
- Trespassing into Kara’s home without breaking anything after she asks for space.
- Telling her that he has to tell her some things before he loses her forever even though he has no plans of leaving for Daxam which is the only way this entire scene could have been even remotely acceptable. 
- Claiming that he wants to be a hero so he can spend every day by her side (newsflash: that’s not herosim, that’s just selfish and the opposite of what being a hero is about).
- Choosing not to go back to Daxam when he has the opportunity to amend some of the mistakes he made while he was the Prince.

Crossover Musical: Again, mostly obvious stuff.
- Why is he there instead of Alex? Makes no sense.
- Lying about his relationship status with Kara while she is unconscious. Shushing J’onn when he tries to correct Musty-Eh, even though J’onn is his superior officer. Total lack of respect for authority? Still check. But he’s totally changed for Kara.
- Kissing Kara while she is unconscious and cannot consent.
- Not sounding even slightly worried about Kara when he sees she is dying in the musical world.
- Somehow this kiss WORKS? I know he SAID he loves her and all, but I’m not sure he knows HOW to love. Clearly he didn’t get good examples from his parents and he certainly doesn’t treat Kara like he loves her, so the kiss absolutely should have failed and J’onn should have pushed him out of the way and done it himself, kissing Kara on the forehead just seconds before she passes away. Or Alex should have been there. Hell, I’d have even accepted Barry asking Cisco to send him back in after he comes to and realizes it didn’t work and giving Kara a forehead kiss of friendship (or on the hand or something).
- Somehow Kara forgives him despite him literally STILL doing nothing to earn it despite kissing her while she is unconscious because some lunatic told him he should.
- Kermil being paralleled to WestAllen, a healthy interracial relationship, despite the only reason karahell even existing is because the show BROKE UP a healthy interracial relationship for racism.

2x17: I am so tired of this, but it’s the last one, so it’s almost over.
- Butting in with his opinion when Alex and J’onn are trying to convince Kara to stand down as if he is offended no one asked him for an opinion even though he literally has nothing to add to the conversation except, “Yeah, what they said.”
- BONUS: He is not included in the shot when J’onn says, “Those of us who care about you.”
- Suggesting running away to another planet as a viable solution, despite that meaning that Kara would be leaving behind her family and friends, her job, and her home. Not even suggesting that they take Alex with them or any of her family and friends. Or that just Kara go by herself until the situation can be handled. He wants it to be just the two of them. And we’re back to the isolation.
- When that doesn’t work, he calls her heroism annoying. Back to thinking herosim is about being selfish, not selfLESS. Also, insults towards Kara’s passions. That line typically goes, “That’s what I LOVE MOST about you.” But he doesn’t love her. So. 

Anyway, that’s my worst episodes list.

Long Live the Murderous Despot

The Evil Queen on Leadership and Rulership 

The Evil Queen was, without any shadow of a doubt, a terrifying figure.  She came to power in the wake of good King Leopold’s suspicious death, immediately charged his daughter the Princess Snow White with crimes against the throne, and was personally responsible for hundreds and probably thousands of deaths.  Walking away from a personal encounter with the Queen with your life was something to be celebrated.  

But the question remains… what was she like as a ruler?  Because none of the above is tells you either what the people actually thought of her or she was like as a Queen.  Let us first consider her predecessor.  Leopold was a man described by himself and those of his immediate circle as a good man.  The king is only concerned with the happiness of his subjects.  We imagine, in stories, that these are the traits of a fine ruler.  

Except historically speaking it’s not.  

Kings worried about the happiness of their subjects tend to spend extravagantly in order to buy popularity and tax inadequately.  That kind of imperial largess can destabilize by pushing too much gold or silver into circulation and causing a rise in prices as the value of money decreases.  King Midas must have been a nightmare for all the other Enchanted Forest rulers even if he was in fact very stingy.  Rumple as well.  And there is no telling how much gold Cora was spinning to maintain her family’s lifestyle and influence following the apparent fall of Henry’s family from grace. 

The other thing that monarchs like Leopold have historically done is underfunded the army, leaving their homelands vulnerable to attack as they chose to spend their money on extravagances or courting popularity.  It does not seem an unreasonable headcanon given what we saw of both Leopold (a man who wore his crown in his own bed chambers) and the way he treated Snow that Leopold was such a ruler and that Regina discovered a significant mess in the treasury when she came to power.  

We already know that Regina had started filling the ranks of the royal army with her own men before Leopold’s death, and while we know those men weren’t all loyal to her given what we saw in 2.20 The Evil Queen, I do believe we can assume that a significant number were.  She took a personal interest in them.  She knew their names.  She paid them well.  And while she may not have tolerated failure a significant number of them remained loyal to her even after the Charming’s claimed to have deposed her.  I counted at least 25 Black Knights in the force that stormed the Charming’s castle and there were likely more.  Enough to take the castle of a supposedly ruling family easily.

This is the problem of relying on fairy air power to win your wars.  If you don’t actually defeat the enemy on the battlefield they rise again bitter and with a vengeance.

One other important detail about the Black Knights, aside from knowing their names and personally hiring them, we are told that Regina often gave these men second chances in their lives.  The Charmings may have been prepared to dismiss them as thugs and mercenaries, but the fact that second chances were something Regina valued is an incredibly appealing quality in a leader.  As was her tendency to place herself in danger.  Fighting behind a terrifying sorceress with magic and fire in her eyes would have been a very powerful force multiplier in a marshal culture like the Enchanted Forest.

But let’s take a step back from the immediate contact with the Queen.  Her kingdom is apparently stable and peaceful.  The economy strong enough that she could easily withstand cutting off trade with King George while that action virtually crippled him.  We are never shown her kingdom to be plagued by warlords terrorizing the peasantry as we are shown with Bo Peep in George’s kingdom.  Both George and Midas, arrogant men, and shown to be militarily aggressive (at least George was) were deferential to Regina.  She and her knights walked freely and without challenge into their castles.

This deference may have been related to personal fear of her as a murderous sociopath, but it does have the larger effect of meaning that her kingdom was free of external threat.  That certainly doesn’t mean you don’t have to worry about dying violently, but Regina’s violence appears to be relatively predictable.  Yes, she will rip out the heart of a bridegroom on his wedding day for violating royal lands, and yes she’ll massacre a village or rip the heart out of every villager in the north woods, but those are actions directly relating to her fight with Snow White.  Don’t aide Snow White and don’t violate the clearly posted law, and you likely would not have a problem with the Queen.  No matter how murderous she was in general.  Believe it or not, lots of monarchs that history has judged as good rulers have a great deal of blood on their hands.  Frederick the Great of Prussia and Catherine the Great of Russia were both very dangerous to their political opposition, and Elizabeth I of England, celebrated selfless ruler ran one of the first modern police states.

Which of course brings us to the topic of Snow White.

The Charmings and their allies will tell you the peasantry loved her, but it’s fairly clear that she went through much of the bandit years without much help.  She might have been robbing royal carriages but she was also breaking into people’s houses and even her presence in an area could attract the attention of the Queen’s forces.  It is highly unlikely that the peasants really cared about a royal dispute.  Historically they rarely do.  And neither David, nor Kathryn or Midas seemed to question Regina’s right to hunt Snow, nor the charges against her.  David aside, that suggests the power dynamics had shifted.  The only people that attached to Snow’s cause were her immediate allies.  The fact that she and David needed magical assistance to defeat King George and then used David’s false claim to his thrown to gain control of his forces to challenge Regina suggests this was not seen as a great crusade outside of the circle of a deposed princess, some rogue dwarfs, and fairies with dubious motives… All one needs to know to show that is how little peasant support there appeared to be to challenge Regina in 3.02 Lost Girl.

Now the political theater of Lost Girl is itself interesting.  Regina’s encounters with Snow are designed to show herself as reasonable, and Snow as only interested in power.  She can have peace and a life away from power with her friends, something the peasant crowd would probably consider a good deal, or she can push for the throne and get other people killed.  The fact that David is publicly pushing for the latter at the same time he’s fighting in the name of Prince James a cruel playboy certainly would not have played into Snow’s case.  We are told that second encounter, where Snow nicks Regina’s cheek with a sword is politically damaging to Regina (especially in front of her knights) because she was seen as invincible.  But I would argue that it was probably a zero sum game for both of them.  Because word of the encounter would have spread and not everyone would have been so impressed with the Prince and Princess bringing a war down on the kingdom.

Wars are good for royals and bad for peasants.  It really doesn’t matter if Regina intended to keep her promise (I’m sure she didn’t), the act of declining the offer damages Snow’s image as the good disinterested royal outside of her inner circle.  And let me point out for the moment, that Snow and Charming’s idea of a court of advisers when they are ruling a kingdom are 7 miners, a cricket, a carpenter, an old widow and a werewolf.  I really can’t see the merchant or noble classes being that thrilled.

So how could a villain be a better leader than a pair of heroes?  Well, the answer to that question is that being a good leader and being a good person are not the same thing.  Leadership is not simply a natural talent, no matter what people might have told you, it’s learned.  The military spends a lot of time teaching leadership and Regina displays a lot of those traits no doubt taught to her in lessons ordered by her mother.  No one can tell me that Cora Mills did not spend her entire life maneuvering her daughter so she cold be a queen without preparing her with the best education possible in how to rule.  Knowing names, being mindful of image, of the conditions of soldiers lives, being willing to risk your own personal safety, and placing the value of the whole over the value of the individual are just some of those commonly taught traits that Regina displays.

The good of an entire town (kingdom) should outweigh the interest of one person.  A hero tries to save everyone, a leader knows that you can’t and that trying to may cost even more lives.  Ironically when Regina says this it would mean that she would argue for her own execution in 2.10 The Cricket Game and against attempting to save her life in 2.22 And Straight on Till Morning, the latter of which she did try to protest on the grounds that they did not know their plan would work.  

Which of course brings us to the topic of Mayor Mills.  Here is a woman who goes from being a tyrannical absolute despot to a small town bureaucrat who describes her work to Snow in a season 4 deleted scene as “public service”.  She is frequently seen in season 1 working late into the evening in the mayor’s office, and doing town paperwork in late season 2 after the majority of the town has dismissed her as an irredeemable villain.  She tells Henry that she traveled to many worlds, and this was the fairest.  She voices repeated concern when first Emma and then the Charmings start treating the sheriff’s department like a family business (a concern only highlighted when Snow is mayor and pardons Will Scarlet simply on the assumption that David let him escape to make her feel better).  I have no doubt that she used her power to torment some people with parking tickets and town ordinance violations, but I also have no doubt that the streets were in good repair and the town budget balanced.  She’s even concerned about property values when monsters show up.  

Regina claims to have designed Storybrooke and many of it’s features, and I think now that we know that Rumple did not in fact write the dark curse, but simply stole it for his own ends, we should take her word for it.  She came from a world and a place where she had no control and no choice and where she saw the harsh realities of the world.  The Enchanted Forest was not, in fact, some idealized version of the middle ages.  It was, as Issac tells us, a place with dysentery and a short life expectancy.  We’ve seen poverty so crushing that parents sold their children, and violence so random be it from an Evil Queen or an ogre attack.  Yet Storybrooke has full employment, no poverty, no homelessness, universal education and a fully staffed and equipped hospital (with yes more doctors than just Whale).

The Evil Queen gifted the people she hated with an idealized society at the same time she was attempting to deny their happiness.  In some ways she was an incredibly inept villain.  She worked hard to maintain that society even after she lost power.  And she verbally protested when the Charmings attempted to run Storybrooke as if it were an extension of an Enchanted Forest kingdom.  All of this speaks to a deep sense of fairness and justice, even in the heart of a woman capable of great cruelty and injustice.

All of this may read like a hit piece against the Charmings, but I actually think it’s not.  Let’s go back to what I said earlier.  Leadership is learned not a natural trait.  David was a shepherd and while a good man has never had any of the training a man of princely station would have had.  He’s behaving how he imagines a leader behaves.  Getting by with bluster, good looks, and confidence, and frankly reacting rashly when he is out of his depth.  Snow was probably given some lessons in leadership as a princess, but they would have come from her Leopold’s school of emphasizing goodness and happiness not security and order.  If Regina had not gone evil she likely could have taught her better when she was her stepmother, but that was not the kind of relationship they had.  One does get the impression though, as Snow looks to Regina as an adviser and a friend, that she is learning those lessons now.  And that alone should tell the audience a lot about what kind of leader Regina was and is.

The Evil Queen was a good leader.  And a good Queen.  And a terrifying monster.  And a vindictive bureaucrat.  And a dedicated public servant.

Because those are not actually incompatible things.

Ahhh sorry anon but I really don’t ship that - I mean, it’s true that I ship Bakugou with a bunch of people aside from my main two, but if they’re part of Deku’s group you can fairly assume they’re not between my Bakugou ships? I have a similar ask somewhere asking about Kaminari’s parents as well, so I guess I’ll answer both here?? As a general rule I don’t really like making headcanons over stuff I’m sure the manga will give me in the future, so I can’t say I’ve thought about this too much - there are a few things I work under the assumption of while drawing, like for example I’m taking for granted they both have at least functional families, considering Aizawa personally visited their homes to ask their guardians about allowing them back to school, and if anything had been weird he would have noticed

I like to think Kaminari got his quirk straight from one of his two parents with no mixing happening, and got the Kaminari surname from them as well, but that’s all I ever allowed myself to settle on as far as Kami’s family goes, everything else changes based on what I need for the current scenario I’m thinking about… I do often end back on him being an only child, though - in the same way depending on how angst or lighthearted I want it to be my ideas for Kirishima’s family change a lot, but generally I think I mostly fall back on the idea of him having a big family? In a scenario like that his parents are kind and love him a lot, but having many children and needing to split their attention on all of them might cause them to overlook him a little (it would explain his obsession with being flashy, for me) then again, who knows? I don’t know how canon you can consider the infos SMASH gives, but in one of the strips Kiri mentions working part-time, and the fact that he doesn’t seem to have problems with money kinda makes me believe he might be independent from his family like that (unless he’s a rich kid, also very entertaining as a possiblity)

I’ve seen a lot of headcanons floating around about both of these guys’ families and possibly being related to villains, that would be cool too, though I’m not sure how much I believe it

I’m sorry this ended up being little to no useful at all lol as I said, I just shift between scenarios a lot - imagine settling on one and growing attached and then having to let it go once Hori proves it wrong, that’d be terrible for me

Dear ‘Supergirl’, I love you! Also, are we breaking up?!?

I’m one of those folks who is currently in a passion love-hate or else hate-love relationship with the show Supergirl depending on the day.  I wanted to write this long post for folks who are also processing this currently.  I had been thinking for a long time that aside from the single thread of the Mon-El storyline, Supergirl still had a solid, core identity as a show.  The show’s appeal to its audience rested on four foundations in my mind:  1) the incredible likability and reliability of their dynamic lead with her awesome combination of classic hero problems and recognizable lady problems 2) a charismatic and deep sisterhood that formed the central love relationship and unified the dramatic arcs of the show and also let it pass the Bechdel test every episode quite easily 3) positive representations of both women and the men who are also outsiders that they share love bonds with, and 4) general lightheartedness and positivity, so even when it went dark, it was just not all THAT dark.  At its worst, the show was fluffy or annoying. 

With the trust I had established through s1, I thought that what they were trying to do with Mon-El was to depict a narcissistic, sexist guy who turns into one of the good guys.  I thought, well, they think that’s a positive message.  They’ve depicted him an “outsider” or misfit, because he’s among all these high-functioning outsiders acting like an incompetent norm.  And I thought, well, this was a terrible idea.  When you write a subversive story, and then you subvert your subversion, you get normative crap that’s even more generic than the original crap.  It’s a parody that’s hard to watch.  But it’s all well intentioned.  And it will be over soon.  It’s not the show.  This won’t kick the foundations out from under the show.  

I am honestly no longer confident that this was well-intentioned or that it won’t topple the show.  I am holding onto a strong, final thread of trust in this show.  But this feels now more like backlash within this show against its own core identity and values.  The way they have written Mon-El feels like a gender panic and also a heteronormative panic to me.  And it is absolutely NOT the actor.  He’s clearly fine.  He even seems like he’s probably really sweet in real life while acting like a complete jerk on tv, kind of like when Orlando Bloom tries to play a villain, and it’s like, yeah, no, you buy teddy bears for your girlfriend and one for yourself to match when you do, don’t try to play me here, babe.  It’s the character, the caricature they have written.  When they could have written ANYONE - a thousand other men instead of this one.  So why this one?

Rebel, Saimdang, and the romanticization of class and nobility in sageuks

At this point, it’s actually a little sad that Saimdang: Light’s Diary and Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People are airing at the same time. Mind you, it’s not because one is easily one of the most hyped sageuks in years and isn’t performing well, while the other seems to have just been thrown out there as an afterthought and is pulling in good ratings, as well as better critical and popular response, it’s the content and themes. Personally speaking, I spent almost 2 years impatiently waiting for Saimdang, and was pretty sure it was going to be the best sageuk of the year when it did come out, something that I thought would hold true after watching the first two episodes. In contrast, Rebel was barely on my radar, and on my “watch now” list instead of “watch if people say good things while it airs” primarily because I liked Hwang Jin-Young’s previous sageuk (and only previous writing credit aside from a special) King’s Daughter Soo Baek Hyang. Halfway through their runs,Saimdang was moved to “I really like it but it could be better” status (with a lot of anger for how SBS execs screwed the show and LYA over, and now they’re taking their screwups out on the show, but I’m not going to dwell on that today) while Rebel has become the sageuk I just can’t see another sageuk surpassing it for a while. (Particularly since they all seem to at least partly center around the tropes and worldview that Rebel critiques.)


This requires some background. Saimdang and Dae Jang Geum, aka, one of the most iconic sageuks ever that also served to help solidify Lee Young Ae’s iconic status, take place at roughly the same time. This is something SBS is very aware of, and while it doesn’t have the endless DJG references we probably would have had if the show had aired on MBC, it very much tried t rely on DJG nostalgia to sell the show, and the sageuk plotline in Saimdang has much more in common with sageuks of a dozen years ago in terms of characterization, tone and pacing than anything from this decade. Unfortunately, people came for Lee Young Ae in a sageuk from this decade, not the first half of the last decade.


Now the ACTUAL background begins DJG is largely known in western fandom for helping in to make sageuks far more female-centric, and for helping to establish the basic formula that most of the popular and/or commercially successful “long and stuffy” sageuks have sageuks have followed since. The rest of this is partially hearsay, as I’m going by what others have told me about pre-DJG sageuks, as DJF is the second oldest I’ve seen. The oldest is Damo, a show that is less iconic than DJG, and that essentially created the formula for the genre that we consider to be fusion sageuks. (Depending on who you ask, DJG and it’s predecessor, Heo Joon, are also fusion sageuks, but they’re an entirely different kind of fusion sageuks and Damo and its successors.) Like DJG, Damo centered around a female lead in a plot that would typically feature a male lead. Both shows are also known for taking the focus away from the throneroom. DJG is still a palace intrigue drama, while Damo steps away from the palace completely, focusing instead on police officers investigating a rebellion, though it does check in with the palace intrigue. But in stepping away from the throneroom and inner palace intrigues, both did something most sageuks avoided: they tackled the issue of class. Both shows featured a heroine of noble birth-Chae Ok, the heroine of Damo was a young noblewoman who became a slave as a child after her father was accused of treason, while Jang Geum’s parents both went into hiding as commoners before she was born, though for different reasons. From what I’ve been told, prior to these two, the main audience for sageuks was middle aged men, and because of this, the focus was almost exclusively on war and palace politics, usually featuring, well, middleaged men. Then, in 2003, there was suddenly a spurt of several successful series featuring female leads. They certainly weren’t the first to do so, it just worked out so that there was a concentration of several at once. Part of what made DJG and Damo stand out was that they were meant to appeal to a wider audience, had higher production values, sweeping (and very different) romances, and broader plots (I mean it wasn’t JUST “maybe our ratings will go up if we try to appeal to women,” but that was certainly a part of it). But they also stood out because the positioning of their heroines-one being made a slave and the other growing up as a commoner-meant that these stories weren’t only about the nobility. The servant class in the city featured heavily in DJG, while rural commoners and their perspective of civil unrest and the nobility featured heavily in Damo. Of course, ultimately, both heroines and their love interests WERE of the nobility, but the door to including the perspectives of other classes was open, and most sageuks since then have taken advantage of that door being open.


Many (I want to say “most” but it kind of hovers in middle ground, I think) will have the protagonist spend part of their life as either a commoner or a poor noble. The protagonist of noble birth who lives as a commoner comes in 2 main varieties: they were born in secret in one way or another, and only find out they have noble (or royal) blood much later in life, after establishing themselves one way or another, or they live as a noble or royal as a child, but are forced to live as commoners or slaves for many of their formative ears before reclaiming their true status. On a similar note, protagonists who actually are commoners with no noble or royal blood are considered exceptional. They’re special, they’re…NOT LIKE OTHER COMMONERS. But there’s also the flipside. The flipside is that all the corrupt and scheming politicians, the cruel masters are treated as individuals. Their social status may have contributed to their corruption an cruelty, but only in that the individual would have been that way anyway, they just happen to have more power, and they re many good and kind masters, and well meaning politicians, That the class system itself was a problem, that there was a social order that told people they were inherently better than others by birth, was not a consideration. 


Shows have tackled this mindset over the years (Maids and Chuno come to mind for sageuks I’ve seen that try to push the standard approach, re: class, a bit), but none have fully committed to taking it on until now. Except that Saimdang is not the show that did so. Saimdang takes the same approach as it’s predecessor-and most sageuks in between-of romanticizing the nobility while also tackling the plights of the lower classes. But what was revolutionary 14 years ago is not revolutionary now. And then we have Rebel. One of the very first things Rebel does is completely obliterate any idea that Gil Dong has noble blood, in a flashforward at the beginning where King Yeonsangun confronts Gil Dong.


Yeonsangun: “I will ask you clearly. Answer me honestly. I heard you are a descendant of the demolished royal family of Goryeo. Is that right? I heard your anger comes from having a father of the noble class and a mother who is a maid. Is this correct? Then what is it? Who on earth are you?” (Gil Dong is shaking his head in amused contempt throughout this.)


Gil Dong: “I am not a descendant of the royal family from Goryeo. Nor am I a son of a minister, or from a poor noble family. I am only a son of my father. My father, a servant over generations, Amogae.”


Yeonsangun: *outraged, disbelieving laughter* “That’s impossible. It’s impossible that someone like you could’ve been born to such a lowly man.”


Gil Dong: “You were born to the master of this country. How did you turn out to be such a lowly man?”


Ok, first of all, THE BURN THERE, GIL DONG! THE BURN. I can only assume that the camera pans out and away so fast after that so that we don’t see Yeonsangun burst into flames from that one.


HOWEVER, while we didn’t know it when the episode aired 3 months ago, this scene is essential to the world view of Rebel. Because ever “noble” sageuk origin was just shot down, and the idea of the “special” commoner isn’t far behind it. And Yeonsangun NEEDS Gil Dong to have that origin. His worldview cannot allow for a “common” person to have more sway than him. Gil Dong doesn’t simply violate his person worldview, his very existence violates the established social order and divine superiority of birth, something that we come to full force for Yeonsangun at the beginning of the latest episode, and something that is beginning to consume him.


Of course, Rebel relies in part of a prophecy of a “mighty child” (Gil Dong) a child born with superhuman strength and healing powers, destined both to become a general and to suffer great losses if he does not control himself. However, it is not Gil Dong’s power that makes him special, it what he does with it. Gil Dong’s power is not what makes him special or what makes him a hero, but it is part of what makes him able to DO something. The “Mighty Child” is born of necessity, not because some random kid won the genetic lottery. (The “Mighty Child” status is also considered to be a curse, not a blessing.) We’re also given a second mighty Child as a counterbalance, and the second mighty child-of equally low birth and with possibly an even more tragic background-flounders because he can’t even manage to properly misuse his powers, much less achieve the Mighty Child’s destiny. I’ve said plenty about my feelings re: The Mighty Child(ren) in previous tumblr posts and will probably make even more posts focused on that aspect in the future, so I won’t dwell on that now.


Moving on from The Mighty Child: Rebel takes the stance that the class system isn’t simply a case of advantage and disadvantage with good ad bad people, but rather, the class system itself is an ideology, and that ideology is the enemy. It isn’t that there are bad apples (and remember, the point of the whole “bad apple” thing is that if there’s a bad apple among your apples, you need to just toss them all and get new apples, not that you just take out the one bad apple and assume all the others that came from the same place are perfect just because you can’t see their problems on the outside) it is that there cannot be good and there is no justice in a system that holds that one group of people is inherently superior to another, and you cannot expect the people who benefit from that system to help find justice in it. When Gil Dong’s father, Amogae, kills his master, Lord Jo to avenge his murdered wife, the widowed Lady Jo only hates Amogae in part because of her murdered husband. What she truly hates Amogae for, the reason she wants him destroyed, the crime she can never forgive, is that Amogae is an abomination that has violated the natural order.


THAT is the true villain of Rebel. The class system itself, the social order that tells one person that they are inherently superior to another by birth, that the higher your class is, the more the world exists to serve you, is the villain, and Lady Jo, her allies, and Yeonsangun are the manifestations of a corrupt and unjust system. This is something that we and the characters grow slowly more and more aware of, until it’s brutally driven home in episodes 21 and 22, and all illusions and any semblance of romanticizing nobility or royalty are ripped away and ruthlessly destroyed in the most devastating fashion. (Not to mention graphically violent, particularly for network TV standards.) Hwajung touched on this idea a bit with it’s ultimate assessment that it is impossible to be a good person and to be king, no matter how much you might want to both, and so there needs to be an opposing force to keep the king in check, but it does not more than touch on the idea, and very much has the typical sageuk romanticization of nobility and royalty.


In the most recent episode, Gil Dong has an exchange with the shaman who pops up every now and then about why oppressed people don’t fight back, and this is her analysis:


Shaman: “They are scared because they don’t know what it is like. All of them…have neither fought nor been victorious in anything in their entire lives. They are only used to running away, losing, and being cheated. They don’t know what it means to fight, or to win.”


She goes on to tell Gil Dong and his men that they can stand up and want to take on the king (the ultimate manifestation of the corruption of the class system) because they have been fighting. Their life experiences have given them the worldview that things can change. She started the speech and I was bracing myself for a NOT LIKE OTHER COMMONERS speech, and instead I got “dude their life experiences royally suck and tell them they can’t expect anything good.” There are only two things that set Gil Dong apart from other commoners: His strength, and the fact that his father was an “abomination” who violated the divinely designated social order. The latter, the rejection of class and the ideology that accompanies it, is the more important of the two, while the former is part of what gives him the ability to do something about it.


It’s from this approach and viewpoint-that the class system is an ideology, and that consuming ideology is the true villain-is the focal point for the many other themes of the show, most notably the conjunction of nature and nurture, the difference between the law and justice, and the endless complementary and opposing mirroring of characters against each other. Everything springs from that.


So, going back to the first sentence. over on SBS, Saimdang is ably doing the same thing Dae Jang Geum did 14 years ago without updating itself for the modern audience (with SBS execs sulking because they somehow managed to make a guaranteed cash cow not be a cash cow and punishing the show and LYA for it-it’s going to be a while before I’m over this) or attempting to expand on the ideas in DJG, while being set in largely the same time period as DJG, with the same core political event (Jungjong’s political coup and overthrowing of Yeonsangun) providing much of the political background impetus for the show. Mean while, over on MBC, the same station that DJG aired on 14 years ago, Rebel is airing on different nights but mostly over the same time period as Saimdang, is set one generation before Saimdang and will most like end with the same political coup, or with the beginnings of it taking root, and is critiquing and deconstructing the approaches to class that Saimdang takes while taking a progressive and revolutionary-for-sageuks stance on class, nobility, and royalty.


It will be interesting to watch this years sageuks after this. All the ones that are coming out look to be focused on royalty and palace conflict, and Rebel’s success has been largely word-of-mouth, a lot of which has been about hit’s approach to class and the fact that none of the protagonists, possibly excepting Eom (who isn’t from a common family, but is from a pretty low ranked noble one), are from the noble class. So. pretty much, all the upcoming sageuks are relying on things that this one is achieving acclaim for rejecting. If nothing else, I’ll be an adjustment for fans of Rebel to go back to “normal” sageuks.


Note: I understand that Six Flying Dragons does tackle similar ideas, but (a) I haven’t seen it yet and (B) it DOES end with the main character becoming the first king of Joseon, so obviously it doesn’t commit itself to the degree that Rebel does.

break up anon from before - i hear you, all that is def possible. i differ b/c i think m would rather be the beard than the ex. she just wants whatever will allow her to exploit connection w/ d as long as possible. if they spin it as her being a friend, she stays publicly in the good graces of d & his people. she gets credit for helping. she won't get sympathy as the ex, b/c of ben. fans will think he's a homewrecker, blame her, turn on her instantly. if she doesn't know this, ben&d def do. 1/2

*2/2 i don’t think they’ll bother w/ a intermediary beard b/c it’s just more work for no gain. the (definitely planted) blinds from last month, plus the promo that d has been allowed to do w/o m recently, makes me think even his team is learning that. but maybe not? time will tell. in general, though, i think the process might be more simple than it seems. i feel like fandom should be prepared for a bunch of stuff only we really care about to not be addressed or explained at all.

Hi Break Up Anon!  If you were to ask me.  And what I think is the best plan moving forward.  No question in my mind.  The truth. I would love for Darren to be able to come out.   With Chris by his side.  And soon.  And to get the TLOS6 dedication we all know Chris wants.  (Perhaps too optimistic?   July is around the corner).  

I guess I’ve been warned by so many people that a new beard is happening.  I have to rationalize it in my head. It’s what I do with everything that’s happened. I go through stages.  First the gut reaction. And to the idea of a new beard that was a resounding NO.   No more lies.  Do not exacerbate a situation that is already a complete mess by adding more lies. Whether overt or implied.  

And then I try to prepare myself for what may be reality.  And in this case it was by looking at it from the outside and developing the only scenario that makes any kind of sense.  A bridge.  

Because I agree. It isn’t all that logical to hire a new beard.  Miarren was so poorly executed. That even the most faithful have doubts.  If they didn’t.   They wouldn’t be reading my blog.  And they do.  And I think I have been very clear.  I don’t waiver.  I am a believer.  And nothing they can say.  And no picture they can send.  Or video will make me change my mind. 

If Team Beard wanted any chance of selling this relationship as reality. It should have ended the minute Ben entered the picture. Because all of the other missteps can maybe be overlooked (not really). But he cannot.  The fact is Mia Swier has a live in boyfriend named Ben Hudson. And that fact precludes miarren from existing.  

So if even the most faithful don’t believe in this public relationship Darren’s had for 6, 7, 10 years (seems to recently been implied she was around for AVPM?)- the natural question  is “why is he pretending to date her?”   And the only conclusion. Darren is hiding something or someone and likely is not as straight as sold.  And if the straight narrative is no longer selling.  There is absolutely no logical reason to employ a new beard.  It’s an utter waste of time with little gain. Except for some press.  And my bridge scenario.  

And the fact remains.  Even if they stage a break-up.  Mia is naive if she thinks the truth will never surface. It will.  It’s just a matter of when. So there will be a staged break-up that will be uncovered as an utter and complete lie. Just adding one more to the pile.  And whatever sympathy she earned.  Will be completely undone.  Especially if they uncover exactly what kind of person she is and how much she has hurt and manipulated Darren.

And you are correct.  How long can she continue to hide the truth of the nature of her relationship with Ben?  A month?  Two at most?  Ben has been more patient than any person should ever have to be.  But he’s barely hiding their relationship now.  He’s not going to sit in the background and let her mourn miarren for too long.  He’s going to want to be open and honest and free.  And no way are her fans going to believe it was platonic all along and suddenly evolved into more once Darren exited. Any chance of that was ruined when Darren dropped the roommate bomb. And our fandom went in overdrive to expose the truth once the door was open.

So I concur.  The truth is the best option.  And there is absolutely no question. His team has been testing this. This is why we got a 2 minute story about a gay porn star.  The 20 articles that followed and multiple blinds. Not to mention Darren freely running around NYC for a weekend going on dates with Elvis and hanging out at well known LGBT+ bars.  Seeing how the fans react.  And I do believe they’ve realized.  The world isn’t going to end if Darren is anything less than straight.  And quite frankly.  That free and vibrant Darren is a much stronger product to sell.  Because this is the Darren all of the fans fell in love with.  This is the Darren we were introduced to so many years ago. And that part of him has been repressed for too long due to a web of lies and the people he’s surrounded by.  

So I too conclude.  The truth is the best option and it absolutely shines the brightest, most sympathetic light on her.  We here in CC land. We know the truth about exactly what kind of person she is. But the GA think she’s a good person.

So the scenario that works best.   Darren posts his Facebook video (how I always see this happening. But I’m good with whatever method).  Tells his truth.  And in doing so makes a very clear statement.  Thanking Mia for being the best friend in the world. Supporting him through this journey.  Even hiding her own relationship.  And wishing her and Ben a lifetime of happiness. 

And with that statement.  She wins.  She hailed as a hero by her fans.  

Time will tell how this goes down. I want to again be clear. I will support whatever decision is made. I have to place my trust in Darren and Chris that they will make the best choice they can. It’s their lives. They are the ones that have to live with the consequences of any decision made.  And no matter what. There will be consequences.  For everyone involved.  But these two are just too damn talented for any long term negative impact. I truly believe the world is theirs to conquer. Both as individuals and as a couple.  And nothing will stop me from getting tickets to opening night of that brilliant musical they create together.  

P.S.   on the questions never addressed.  I think we all expect that.   I’m fully prepared to only get the partial truth.  I just hope someday we get the skating riot photo we all know Darren has framed in their house.
