Overbrook Asylum

In 1896, Essex County Asylum for the Insane was build on 325 acres of lane in Cedar Grove, New Jersey. The asylum was more commonly referred to as Overbrook. From the onset, the asylum was at full capacity, often housing thousands of patients at once. Additionally, the asylum was severely understaffed. On the grounds of the asylum stood a train station, as well as a power house and a boiler. The patients at the asylum were mostly fed by food that was grown in the fields on the grounds. A bakery and firehouse were also built within the complex of Overbrook.

It was said that it was a town within a town, but with an ever growing patient list combined with minimal staff and developing drugs, it was set up to fail, and fail it certainly did. Due to the sheer amount of patients, many were left without a bed and were forced to sleep on the cold asylum floors. In 1917, disaster struck when the asylum’s only boiler malfunctioned and 24 inmates froze to death in their beds while they slept. Disease was often rampant in Overbrook.

As time progressed and mental health issues became better understood, grim methods such as lobotomies and electroshock therapy became outdated. This was a blow to the already failing asylum, who used both methods in abundance. The asylum eventually closed in 2007, with over 10,000 patients dying within the confines of the walls. It isn’t much surprise that many say Overbrook is haunted - several visitors have claimed to witness a nurse wearing a 19th century nurses uniform, walking around the asylum conducting checks.

Make Out (Tom Holland x Reader)

They’re desperate to catch a glimpse of Tom, desperate to get his attention. And they sure do… although a series of unfortunate and embarrassing accidents isn’t the way they wanted to do so.

A/N: I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT I AM DOING THIS, TERROR IS COURSING THROUGH MY VEINS. Okay, now that that’s outta the way… I adore this song and Tom… so thought why not put the two together? Anyways, this is my first imagine in… awhile. The second one I’ve ever written, and the first one I’ve written on this blog. Please leave me some feedback!

P.S I know I use the f-word a lot. Sorry. It’s just… ingrained into my thoughts now.

Tom Holland and Harrison Osterfield had moved into the building your flat was in nearly a month ago. Initially, you were flabbergasted, and desperate for a sight of them. You adored both boys, even more so after the release of Spiderman: Homecoming… and just seeing them in person would surely put you on cloud nine. Mostly because you had the world’s biggest crush on Tom. You couldn’t have been more wrong.

Three days after they had moved in, you had been cleaning around the window near your fire escape and accidentally knocked one of your many potted plants off of the windowsill. It fell several stories to the pavement below… and almost hit Harrison fucking Osterfield. Both boys had looked up, clearly startled. You squeaked and promptly ducked back inside, face tomato red with mortification. You sunk to the floor and buried your face in your hands, heart pounding wildly. You’d almost killed one of your favourite celebrities! God. How could you be that stupid? Had they seen you? It had felt as though Tom was looking right at you…You shivered at the thought.

Then and there you vowed to never do something like that again and to never say a word about it, were you ever to bump into them. Unfortunately, the Universe had other plans for you, and that was only the first of many embarrassing incidents involving you and Tom Holland.

The next… escapade occurred roughly two weeks after the “Deadly Potted Plant Incident”, as your best friend had dubbed it through a fit of giggles the very night of the tragedy. You were returning from the library, a mountain of books stacked in your arms. Most were for research purposes, but a few were pleasure reads, and you were quite excited to look at every single book. The lift hadn’t been working the past few days, so you had to take the stairs. Misfortune, it seemed, was following you everywhere these days.

With a soft sigh, you started to climb, arms awkwardly positioned to keep a grip on the stack of books. You made it up two flights of stairs before disaster struck. You couldn’t see very well with all the books in the way and thought that there was another step when there actually wasn’t… you lurched and tumbled to the ground, books skidding across the landing every which way.

“Oh, fuck,” you whined, pushing up into a standing position, your bum going out, wincing as you straightened your knees. You gently rubbed at your knees, hissing at the pain, still bent over. There’d be some lovely purple bruises tomorrow. Fantastic. Someone had cleared their throat, startling you into making a rather undignified noise and somehow flailing your way into falling again. This time on to the landing. Smack on your ass. And of course- because the Universe hated you- It was Tom fucking Holland

“Hey… are you alright, love?” He asked gently, squatting down in order to be eye-level with you. Your eyes went wide, cheeks warming significantly. God, he was so pretty up close… You opened and closed your mouth a few times, probably looking like a fish… of fucking course now was the time your voice chose to take a lunch break. After a few painful minutes, you were finally able to speak… and that made things even worse.

“No!” You squealed, scrambling backwards on all fours, “I almost killed Harrison with a potted plant last week and now-” You cut yourself off, gasping. You’d specifically told yourself never to mention that if you met Tom! God, you were such a mess! You quickly gathered your books and somehow sprinted up the stairs. Once you got into your apartment, you threw yourself on the couch, moaning over your embarrassment. Only you could mess up this bad.

The third incident happened the next week. You just couldn’t catch a break. You had, by this point, lulled yourself into a false sense of security. You hadn’t seen Tom or Harrison since the “Book Bumble Of Utter Humiliation” (okay, so you’d practically run away whenever either of them spotted you) and everything else in your life had been going pretty well. Your favourite professor had asked to keep one of your essays to use it as a future example.

You had just returned from grocery shopping, headphones in and two bags in your hand. The lift was finally working again, so you walked in. Your favourite song of the moment came on before the doors closed. Things had been getting better… you hadn’t had any more… eventful encounters with your famous sort-of neighbours. You could just… let go and dance to your favourite song, right? You put your bags on the ground, hips already starting to drop and move with the bass. Seconds later, you were full on dancing as though you were in a club. A bright smile bloomed on your face as you spun around slowly, circling your hips, hands in the air.

You hadn’t noticed that the lift had stopped… but you did see the doors opening over your shoulder mid hip-roll. And there, in all his lazy Sunday afternoon glory, was Tom Holland, mouth hanging open. Oh shit.

just a lil something based on the Serpent scene in the season finale.

You stumbled along the path, following the others as you were pulled along.

“Guys slow down,” you whined. You were met with various chuckles.

You jogged in order to keep up, feeling your feet stop moving when you reached the familiar setting.

You glanced down before being pulled forwards once more, tripping over your feet as you tried to keep your balance.

“He giving you a hard time?”

You looked up to see your newly found friend. No, he’s family now , you hastily reminded yourself.

“Nothing to worry about. Hot Dog is just a bit excited,” you replied, smiling down at the dog. “It’s not every day you get to recruit a new Serpent.”

You kept walking, leaving the rest of the Serpents behind as you approached the trailer. They looked after you worriedly, suddenly wondering if they should have brought you. You turned around, walking backwards as you addressed the rest of your family. “You guys coming or what?”

The Serpents had taken you in as a favor to FP.

“Keep (Y/N) safe. She’s Jughead’s girl,” he had said.

“Uh boss,” the Serpents had replied. “You do know he left her for that Cooper girl right?”

FP had merely smirked.

Everyone knew the story of you and Jughead. A beautiful whirlwind of romance that had ended in disaster when he realized just how much better Betty Cooper was compared to you.

Truth is, a few months ago, you wouldn’t have even considered joining the Serpents. You were a good student. Straight A’s and knowledge that was only rivaled by Cheryl herself (that girl was pretty dang smart).

You had a good thing going with Jughead, at least you thought you did. Turns out he wanted more. More excitement, someone who wasn’t as boring and invested in their studies as you were.

He had told you in front of the whole school, told you how selfish and boring you were, only concentrating on school.

“There’s more to life than studying (Y/N),” he had said softly. “But you don’t get that and I can’t keep doing this.”

His words had hurt more that you cared to admit. The hallway was quiet as he spoke his words, everyone waiting for you to burst into tears, knowing that the words he spoke were a lie.

The moment never came. Instead, you swallowed back your sobs, surprising everyone when you flipped Jughead off and strutted out of Riverdale High with your held held high. Thunderous applause had followed you as you left, as Cheryl stepped up to Jughead and clapped for you, flipping him off as she told him the words he had secretly known all along. “That was a dick move Drughead. You just lost the best thing , that will ever happen to you in your pathetic little life, not that you deserved her in the first place.“

Jughead had swallowed harshly as she walked off. “I know.”

You left Riverdale soon after. You went back to your home in the South Side, transferring school districts and quickly integrating yourself with the student population. You became friends with people associated with the Serpents and eventually became one yourself (because of FP unbeknownst to you). Wearing the jacket became like a badge of honor, and everyone wanted to be on your good side.

You had become the opposite of what you were. You were reckless . You were selfish . And you were comfortable in being who you had become, always putting yourself first now.

The only person you kept contact with was Cheryl, surprisingly. You ignored everyone else, including Jughead who flooded your phone with calls and texts when everyone found out you had left Riverdale High.

Then disaster struck and Jughead ended up at South Side. You didn’t know until you bumped into him in the hallway, his eyes widening in shock as he took you in. You were more confident in your skin, he noticed. He couldn’t help the feelings that rushed back to him.

He had been the one to tell you the news: FP had been arrested for the murder of Jason Blossom.

You had been kept in the dark, FP informing the rest of the Serpents that you wouldn’t be informed about his predicament.

Tears welled up in your eyes. FP meant more to you than anyone else. As soon as Jughead reached out to hug you, you turned around and walked out the door.

Jughead could not believe that you had willingly ditched school. You had changed. A lot.

You stayed with Cheryl, having been called in a panic by Archie after her little stunt. When she insisted she was well enough to go back home, you drove her back, making sure that she was safe from herself before hesitantly leaving.

You went home, only to be met with the rest of the gang, which led to you standing in front Jughead’s trailer, nervously tugging on Hot Dog’s collar as you tried to calm him down.

You could hear noises inside the trailer, your throat tightening as you realized what those sounds were. The rest of the Serpents froze slightly, trying to avoid looking at you with their pity-filled stares.

Inside the trailer, Betty was in a state of pure bliss. She was finally happy, her only worry being getting FP out of prison. She had Jughead, she had her friends. She was happy .

Jughead” she couldn’t help the moan that came out of her mouth as the aforementioned boy began trailing kisses down her neck. She trailed her hands down his torso, pulling his shirt up and then off. She then began trailing kisses down his neck as well, biting softly as he writhed beneath her touch.

(Y/N)…” came Jughead’s breathy moan. Betty stopped immediately.

“Jughead, what was that?” she asked quietly.

Jughead opened his mouth to reply but was stopped by a knock, causing him to look at Betty in a panic. “Is that your mom?”

“Who else would it be?” came her sarcastic response.

Back outside, Hot Dog began to bark and struggle against his leash as Jughead opened the door. The leash slipped out of your hand, causing you to go after Hot Dog as he jumped on Jughead.

“Easy Hot Dog,” you grunted as you regained a hold of his leash. “He’s family.”

Jughead’s eyes widened as he saw you, dressed in a tight fitting outfit with your leather jacket (which he had completely missed at school). You were a Serpent . The rest of the Serpents noticed his growing blush and exchanged smirks with each other as his eyes lingered on your form.

“Hey,” Jughead finally said, stepping out slightly.

“Heard your dad could have named names but didn’t,” a Serpent said, stepping forwards and standing next to you. “Serpents take care of their own. We wanted you to know, no matter what happens to him, however long he’s gone, we’ve got your back.

“That’s yours, if you want it,” he said gesturing to the jacket that you had carelessly slung across your arm. You stepped forwards shyly, extending your arm as you handed Jughead the jacket, trying to ignore the butterflies you felt when your fingers brushed.

Jughead stared at you, stepping close once he took the jacket. He slipped it on slowly and brushed it off, looking at it almost admiringly.

His gaze returned to you as he stepped closer, brushing your hair back from your face. You looked at him and then noticed movement in the doorway. Betty.

You stepped back as Hot Dog let out a yelp, spotting Betty as well.

“Juggie?” Betty questioned, stepping out slightly. She looked at you then at the jacket in surprise and sadness.

You were shaken out of your thoughts by a vibration. Your phone.

From: Cherry
It’s done (Y/N/N). The fire had been brought and the sins have been purged from the Blossom household.

Your eyes widened as you realized what she meant and you began to make your way back where you came from.

“(Y/N)! Where are you going?” you heard the Serpents shout.

“I’m needed somewhere else,” you replied quickly, running off with Hot Dog bounding at your heels.

“(Y/N)…” you heard Jughead say. You paused briefly and turned around, meeting his gaze before you slid your eyes over to Betty.

Betty, who no longer looked happy. Betty, why no longer felt as though she had it all. Betty, who knew that Jughead had never been hers to begin with.

You turned around and continued running to Cheryl but you knew. Betty knew.

You both knew that you had won Jughead over. You had never lost him in the first place. Now it was just a matter of time to see how long it would take for him to join you in the South Side.

Humans are space Orcs

So I’m going to toss in one of these cus why not.
What if all aliens just don’t get the concept of “Pets”

Year of the Gu'meks: 34458, 45, 3
Human year: 2254, 11, 15
Today I was assigned as the new ambassador to Earth. I have gone through most of the lessons of human quirks, but I still have to go through “Pets”, and “The will to survive” I have no idea what pets are, but I have a good idea what “the will to survive” is.

Year of the Gu'meks: 34458, 45, 4
Human year: 2254, 11, 15
I have borded the Human vessel “Edmonton” in order to be transported to Earth. I have met the Human ambassador on bord, and she is in charge of teaching me the concept of “pets” Her name is Alexadra. She is very kind, but the fact that femal humans always have their teets, even when not nursing child, confuses me. If evolution was slightly different on Gu'mek, perhaps we would to.
It also baffles me that Humans are the only spiecis that the name of the spiecis is not realed to their planet.

Suplement
Almost as soon as I was done writing my log, Alexandra came to me and said she wanted me to meet someone named “Doug”
It turns out Doug is on of these “pets”. He is a domesticated Earth canine. Alexandra explained that humans keep domesticated animals as companions. I guess being the “Apex preditor” of your planet has its advantages. She also explained that hundreds of human years ago they used these animals to help hunt, and still do.
I do not understand why humans still hunt, now that they have had farms on their planet for hundreds of years, and access to food replcation technology for about 96 years.

Year of Gu'mek 34..why am I doing this, no one is going to find us.
We crashed of Tummaah 4, and everybody exept Alex and her dog, and obviously me, has died. Alex has told me that now I shall see this “will to survive” humans are so famous for.

It has been 20 days scince the crash, and I have given up on rescue. When I brought this up with Alex, she simlpy stated “then we will make this hellhole our home”

Day 50.
We have built a crude house out of the wreckage of the ship. Alex is sad about the loss of the ship. She said it was named after her home city.

Day 61
DISASTER. A brutal storm struck and completely destroyed the house we resided in. A peice of debrie landed on Alex and Doug, wounding them both. Alex completely disregarded her own injuries to treat Doug. Her injuries I may add, were quite extensive(broken leg, cracked rips, and a piece of debrie sticking out OF HER STOMACH.) This. This is the human will to survive. Alex, after making sure Doug was comfortable, finaly started treating herself.
I would try to help, but I know little about human physiology.

Day 70.
We have re-built the shelter, and even after all of her injuries, she insisted on hunting for food, despite the fact I offered to do it. She told me “I can still go out and hunt. Yes it will be painful, yes it will be harder than normal without Doug by my side, but I can do it. You on the other hand…well the Gu'mek are not that stealthy. You evolved to blend in with rocks and such, Humanity evolved to hunt. Now stay here and make sure Doug gets enough water, he is very sick, and I don’t want to lead anyone else.”

Day 100.
A ship has found us!! Its landing..ITS THE QUA'TALL

We have been on the run for 5 days. Alex came up with a crazy plan. Take the Qua'tall ship. Its a ship of 50. We are 2. 3 if you include the dog. Alex told me that if she can get one of their guns, she can do it by herself.

We did it. We have a gun. Doug and I are to stay here while Alex goes out. If she dies, I am to care for Doug as long as I can. He is aparently 12 years old, and dogs live for about 14.

IT WAS AMAZING. Alex has killed all of them. That was the human will to survive. It was amazing, she was hit multiple times. She just got up and kept going. We are now on the ship, and heading for Allied space.

Ok so this turned into something completely different and long.
But hey thats my addition to this tag.

Guys, seriously, watch this show.

Seriously. This show doesn’t get nearly as much love as it deserves. So I'ma do a full-fledged review right now. Y’all sit yo asses down and listen.

Ruby Gloom is a canadian kids’ cartoon about a young girl and her group of friends. It’s quite a unique show in many different ways. For one, it’s not your typical diabetes inducing show for toddlers. It’s actually in a very..well, gloomy setting. Nightime is dark as you would expect, and during the day its perpetually cloudy and overcast. Heck, in the one episode it was actually sunny, the characters were doing everything they could to bring the clouds back! The main characters all live together in a mansion on top of a large hill, where most of the episodes occur.

Now. The Characters:

The eponymous Ruby Gloom. A young girl(Some fans have speculated she’s a living doll) who, according to the show’s tagline, is ‘the happiest girl in the world.’ However, shes not the typical happy-all-the-time, overly hyperactive and somewhat annoying character. She’s an optimist, through and through, and tries to see the bright side of everything. She’s also a pretty calm person. She doesn’t jump around and yell about how great everything is, but she’s happy. She also has a pet cat named Doom Kitty, who has quite the personality of her own.

Skull-Boy is the brains of the group. He’s just a teensy bit awkward and is trying to find out who he is, or more, who his family is. He’s a  jack-of-all-trades, probably because pretty much every episode he tries a new profession stating that “I must be related to a long line of ______!” Ruby also has a crush on him.

Iris is the wild child. She loves taking risks and going to extremes to have fun and is cheerful and hyperactive. Sometimes she can be unintentionally insensitive and a bit too wild, but she’s never purposely mean. She has a giant flying worm named Squig.

Misery is pretty much the opposite of Ruby. She’s a fan favorite and most fans have come to the conclusion that she is a banshee. She is a disaster magnet and has the worst luck, and constantly gets struck by lightning. Despite always having bad luck and a generally gloomy demeanor, she’s not depressed. She has a place to live and friends that love her, and is generally happy with what she has.

Frank and Len are brothers who love to create music. Frank is usually smarter one who often gets annoyed by his brother’s stupidity and antics, but sometimes can be just as dumb as his brother, depending on the writer. Len is the dimmer of the two and doesn’t always get things. They are actually incredibly talented musicians.

Poe is a very posh crow. He loves to hear himself talk and can be a bit arrogant at times, but he’s still a good person and a good friend.

Boo-Boo is a mischievous little ghost that loves to pull pranks. He tries to be scary, but instead everyone finds him cute. He also can be stubborn at times.

Lastly, my personal favorite, is Scaredy Bat. Scaredy Bat is a shy little guy with an indian accent who’s afraid of everything. He gets nervous very easily and is also quite paranoid. Despite his timid personality, he’s the extremely talented drummer of Frank and Len’s band and forgets  his fear behind the kit. He is also the only one that Boo-Boo can scare.

Woah, that got longer than expected, but I got the point across. ‘You can find most episodes on YouTube. Seriously, give it a shot.

Words from The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows for the signs

Aries: Rubatosis
n. the unsettling awareness of your own heartbeat, whose tenuous muscular throbbing feels less like a metronome than a nervous ditty your heart is tapping to itself, the kind that people compulsively hum or sing while walking in complete darkness, as if to casually remind the outside world,  I’m here, I’m here, I’m here .

Taurus: Ambedo
n. a kind of melancholic trance in which you become completely absorbed in vivid sensory details—raindrops skittering down a window, tall trees leaning in the wind, clouds of cream swirling in your coffee—briefly soaking in the experience of being alive, an act that is done purely for its own sake.

Gemini: Onism
n. the frustration of being stuck in just one body, that inhabits only one place at a time, which is like standing in front of the departures screen at an airport, flickering over with strange place names like other people’s passwords, each representing one more thing you’ll never get to see before you die—and all because, as the arrow on the map helpfully points out,  you are here .

Cancer: Lachesism
n. the desire to be struck by disaster—to survive a plane crash, to lose everything in a fire, to plunge over a waterfall—which would put a kink in the smooth arc of your life, and forge it into something hardened and flexible and sharp, not just a stiff prefabricated beam that barely covers the gap between one end of your life and the other.

Leo: Mimeomia
n. the frustration of knowing how easily you fit into a stereotype, even if you never intended to, even if it’s unfair, even if everyone else feels the same way—each of us trick-or-treating for money and respect and attention, wearing a safe and predictable costume because we’re tired of answering the question, “What are you supposed to be?”

Virgo: Kairosclerosis
n. the moment you realize that you’re currently happy—consciously trying to savor the feeling—which prompts your intellect to identify it, pick it apart and put it in context, where it will slowly dissolve until it’s little more than an aftertaste.

Libra: Contact High-five
n. an innocuous touch by someone just doing their job—a barber, yoga instructor or friendly waitress—that you enjoy more than you’d like to admit, a feeling of connection so stupefyingly simple that it cheapens the power of the written word, so that by the year 2025, aspiring novelists would be better off just giving people a hug.

Scorpio: Opia
n. the ambiguous intensity of looking someone in the eye, which can feel simultaneously invasive and vulnerable—their pupils glittering, bottomless and opaque—as if you were peering through a hole in the door of a house, able to tell that there’s someone standing there, but unable to tell if you’re looking in or looking out.

Sagittarius: Rückkehrunruhe
n. the feeling of returning home after an immersive trip only to find it fading rapidly from your awareness—to the extent you have to keep reminding yourself that it happened at all, even though it felt so vivid just days ago—which makes you wish you could smoothly cross-dissolve back into everyday life, or just hold the shutter open indefinitely and let one scene become superimposed on the next, so all your days would run together and you’d never have to call cut.

Capricorn: The Bends
n. frustration that you’re not enjoying an experience as much as you should, even something you’ve worked for years to attain, which prompts you to plug in various thought combinations to try for anything more than static emotional blankness, as if your heart had been accidentally demagnetized by a surge of expectations.

Aquarius: Mauerbauertraurigkeit
n. the inexplicable urge to push people away, even close friends who you really like—as if all your social tastebuds suddenly went numb, leaving you unable to distinguish cheap politeness from the taste of genuine affection, unable to recognize its rich and ambiguous flavors, its long and delicate maturation, or the simple fact that each tasting is double-blind.

Pisces: Daguerreologue
n. an imaginary interview with an old photo of yourself, an enigmatic figure who still lives in the grainy and color-warped house you grew up in, who may well spend a lot of their day wondering where you are and what you’re doing now, like an old grandma whose kids live far away and don’t call much anymore.

Chris Colfer: The First Time I Braved New York (and a Taxi!)
The “Glee” actor and best-selling author, whose latest young adult novel is “Stranger Than Fanfiction,” talks about a rite of passage.
By Chris Colfer

Imagine, if you will, the Pillsbury Doughboy with Peter Brady’s haircut and Truman Capote’s voice. Add a sprinkling of the fear of being touched and the social anxiety of a shy Chihuahua. That was me at 18, and in December 2008, that guy decided it was a good idea to take a trip to New York City all by himself.

To reiterate why this cultural experiment was destined for failure, I should mention I was born and raised in Clovis, Calif., a small town in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley — you know, where they end up in “The Grapes of Wrath.” Clovis is a place of spacious farmland, quiet suburbs, ample street parking and trucks with testicle ornaments. It couldn’t be more different from the Big Apple, which is probably why I spent much of my adolescence wishing Kristin Chenoweth would show up in Glinda the Good Witch’s bubble and take me there.

As silly as it sounded, something that had been floating around in your bucket list for a while was to finally catch the bride’s bouquet of flowers at a wedding. Sure, it was a simple little thing, but still! The energy of it all was what you were craving. You had been to plenty of weddings, but unfortunately, your hand-eye coordination wasn’t all that great and you had never caught the bouquet once!

“I could eat this dip all night.” You muttered through a mouth full of crackers and spinach dip, reaching up to dust the crumbs off the corner of your mouth.

“You technically have been.” Y/F/N joked, laughing lightly as you scowled at her and finished the rest of the dip. “Where did Harry go?”

“He said he wanted to dance, but these heels are killing me, so I told him to go and dance with his friends and then I’d join him later.” You shrugged, glancing down at your heels and grimacing. You really wanted to take them off but that wouldn’t be very appropriate. Maybe you could just sit here all night and wait for your feet to go numb. “There’s no way in hell I’m going to get up off this chair until we have to leave-”

Alright, ladies! It’s time for the bouquet toss!” You perked up immediately at the announcement, practically launching yourself off the chair and ignoring the searing pain coming from your feet as you hobbled as quickly as possible over to the growing crowd. Okay Y/N, you can do this. Push through the crowd, heck, elbow people in the face if you need to! Just kidding, that’s probably not the best idea. But it wouldn’t hurt being a tiny bit aggressive. This was basically your last chance since most of your friends had already gotten married, so the chance of attending another wedding anytime soon was relatively slim.

“S’cuse me, sorry! S’cuse me, sorry…” As you maneuvered through the crowd, the only thing that was on your mind was catching that bouquet. You had practiced catching a rubber ball with Y/F/N the other day, but that was a little different. It would be fine, though! You were competing against about fifty other people but maybe, just maybe, the stars would align and Fate would finally let you have your very first bouquet. And that’s when disaster struck. The next thing you knew, the bouquet was tossed up into the air and you hadn’t even made it to the front of the crowd yet.

“No, no,” You gasped, your eyes following the bouquet as it disappeared into the crowd. That was it. That was your last chance and you completely blew it because you couldn’t hobble fast enough. “Are you fucking kidding me?!” You cursed, clearing your throat afterward when you got a couple snarky glances for your sailor-mouth. “Sorry.” Well, this certainly turned into a disappointing night. Sure, you were happy to be part of an event celebrating the love between two people, but… You just wanted to catch those damn flowers for once!

“Y/N, why aren’t you over there with Harry?” You glanced up as Y/F/N sat down with a flute of champagne in her hand. “He’s the one who caught the bouquet, after all.”

“I just wanted to- Wait, what?” You immediately whipped around to where Y/F/N had pointed, your eyes widening at the sight of a happy Harry flaunting the bouquet of white roses and seeming to have the time of his life. Of course Harry was the center of attention at someone else’s wedding.

“Hey, Mr. Bouquet-stealer.” To be completely honest, you were a little bitter that you hadn’t gotten the flowers, but at least Harry caught them! You couldn’t help but wonder if the same ‘whoever catches the bouquet will get married next’ applied to him, but hopefully it did. You had caught yourself dreaming about getting married to Harry far too many times.

“I caught these jus’ fo’ you.” Harry beamed, handing you the bouquet before pulling you over to him by the wrist and giving you a sweet kiss. It was obvious he had one too many flutes of champagne considering how bubbly and spaced-out he seemed. But then again, weddings made him very, very happy. As he twirled you in a small circle, you couldn’t help but giggle before setting the roses down on a nearby table before wrapping your arms around Harry’s neck loosely. A warm glow cast over the room and it felt as if you and Harry were the only people left. (Or maybe it was the champagne going to your head.)

“I can’t believe you caught them instead of me.” You pouted playfully, humming as Harry leaned down to nudge his nose against yours.

“I guess that means you’ll have t’ marry me soon.” Your heart skipped at the thought of Harry waiting for you at the end of the aisle.

“Is that a promise?”

“It’s a promise.”

"listen i know i can’t just show up at your apartment at six in the morning but i need coffee and no one makes it like you do" OR "we broke up after i left and moved away and months later i find out you rushed to the airport to stop me but you were too late" with Percabeth?

There are a lot of things Percy expects to see at six in the morning outside his place in New Athens. Campers who are in trouble. Campers who aren’t in trouble, but are being little shits. Lost gods that he can slam the door on. Maybe even his brother, whose sense of timing after spending time on the bottom of the ocean isn’t always great.

Annabeth Chase?

He’s not sure anything could have prepared him for Annabeth Chase.

Riptide is in his hand and ready to be uncapped before either of them say anything, his senses on red alert because the only reason his ex-girlfriend would be standing in front of him right now is if some sort of terrible disaster had struck the town.

Her hand snaps out, gently pressing his wrist down. The touch of skin on skin is like fire through his veins, and just for a second, Percy forgets how to breathe.

“No!” Her face is pink in the hazy dawn light. “No I - ugh, sorry, there’s nothing wrong. This was a bad idea, I should - I’m going.”

“Wait–” He takes a stumbling half-step towards her, just barely suppressing the urge to reach for her. The memory of her hand on his wrist still throbs, and he’s pretty sure it’s not something either of them want to repeat. “What - uh, how can I help? Did you need help? What do you need?”

The awkwardness hangs so thing in the air, they practically have to chew through it to speak. Annabeth looks briefly like she’s considering not even trying, before her shoulders slump. She rubs the back of her neck, looking up at the sky, and that’s when Percy notices the dark circles under them.

“Coffee,” she sighs. “I might have been up all night working on some plans, and I really need to get them done, and then I’ve got knifework with the campers later and I really don’t want to accidentally stab them. Plus I’m pretty sure that Chiron wants to meet with me about incorporating some different habitats into our next expansion and I wanted to draft up some ideas for that and–”

Once upon a time, he probably would have put his hand over her mouth and dragged her inside.

Once upon a time, he might have calmed her down with a kiss instead of his hand.

Right now, all he can really do is stand there, half-amused, half-concerned (all affection), waiting patiently for it all to come out. She finishes with something about needing to call her dad, and her face is definitely bright red now. For a moment (and it’s not the first moment), Percy forgets all about the fights and the screaming, the endless nightmares caught between them.

For a moment, he loves Annabeth Chase and it’s enough.

“I can do coffee,” he says, leaning against the doorframe with a grin. “If you cancel that meeting with Chiron and give yourself a break.”

The moment stretches as she blinks at him, turning that over in her mind. Once upon a time, it would have gotten him a laugh and a smack on the shoulder, a begrudging agreement as they both wandered inside.

Annabeth frowns, and the moment shatters. “I don’t need you to baby me, Percy,” she says tightly. “I’m an adult. I can make my own decisions.”

Irritation flares in his chest. “I know you’re an adult, I’m just worried–”

“How about you worry about yourself and your little excursions into monster territory, and leave my coping mechanisms to me?”

They stare at each other. The irritation twists into something darker, and it’s only those little excursions, the main outlet for the rage that burns inside him, that keep him from exploding in her face.

“Do you want coffee or not?” he asks finally. He sounds like a dead thing.

“I’ll get some at camp,” she says, and is gone before either one of them can start yelling.

Jonathan had always possessed a strong immune system; it was rare he got sick and even more rare to get so ill he could barely move—but today disaster struck in the form of a terrible cold. Coughing, shaking, a fever… He’d never felt so shitty (but that was what everyone said when they were bedridden).

Truthfully, the thing that hurt the most was the isolation. He was not a social person; preferring small crowds, and the company of those with which he was comfortable, but not being able to hang out with Will, or have a proper conversation with his mother after work (he wasn’t even able to go to work), sucked.

The worst part, though, was not seeing Steve and Nancy.

It was nearly noon on a Monday, three days after the beginning of this god-awful illness, and by this time he’d exhausted all of his mixtapes, thrown up twice, and napped for two hours straight. He’d woken up with a headache and ripped his headphones off, body cold, covered in sweat. I’m dying, he’d decided.

tvd + season 5

“I’m afraid the doppelgänger lore’s been misinterpreted over the ages. The prophecy is that the doppelgänger blood can help the Travelers, but they’re being drawn together because of a spell I cast 1500 years ago. Two thousand years ago, Silas and Qetsiyah cast a spell for immortality. It created a schism in the Traveler community, giving rise to the witches. They tried to keep us scattered to make us forget how powerful we can be. The witches put a curse on us that kept us from settling down as a tribe. Whenever we’ve tried to gather, disaster struck – plagues, earthquakes, fire. Something inevitably wiped us out.”

Read part one here and part 2

The disaster was caused by a day at the pool.

There were no lakes or rivers– really no bodies of water at all close by and the nearest pool was nearly an hour away so swimming was very rare— thankfully for Peter.

He had a hard-enough time trying to hide the tatoo from you without that worry added onto everything else.

VICTIMS OF FREE-MIXING
Umm Muhammad, a mature woman over the age of 40, tells her story.

I lived a life of modest means with my husband. There was never any closeness and harmony, and my husband did not have the kind of strong personality that a woman would hope for, but his good nature made me overlook the fact that I was the one who was responsible for most of the decision making in the family.

My husband often used to mention the name of his friend and business partner, and he would talk about him in my presence, and I often used to meet with him in his office which was originally part of our apartment. This went on for many years, until circumstances led to us exchanging visits with this person and his family. These family visits were repeated and because of his close friendship with my husband, we did not notice how the number of visits increased and how many hours a single visit would last. He often used to come on his own to sit with us, me and my husband, for long visits. My husband’s trust in him knew no bounds, and as days passed I got to know this person very well, and saw how wonderful and decent he was. I began to feel a strong attraction towards this man, and at the same time I began to sense that the feeling was mutual.

Things took a strange turn after that, when I realized that this man was the kind of person I had always dreamed about. Why had he come along now, after all these years? The more this man’s status increased in my eyes, the more my husband’s status diminished. It was as if I had needed to see the beauty of his character in order to discover how ugly my husband’s character was.

The matter between this person and myself did not go beyond these persistent thoughts which were occupying my mind night and day. Neither he nor I ever voiced what we felt in our hearts… until today. Yet despite that my life is over and my husband is little more than a weak man with no self-esteem. I hate him and I do not know how all this hatred towards him started to boil over. I wonder how I put up with him all these years, bearing all these burdens by myself, facing life’s problems on my own.

Things got so bad that I asked him for a divorce, and he divorced me at my request. After that he became a broken man. Even worse than that is that after my marriage was wrecked and my children and husband were devastated, problems arose in this man’s family. His wife, with her feminine intuition, realized what had been going on in his heart of hearts, and his life became hell. She was overwhelmed with jealousy to the extent that one night she left her house at 2 a.m. and came to attack my house, screaming, weeping and hurling accusations. His marriage was also about to collapse.

I admit that the lovely gatherings which we used to enjoy gave us the opportunity to get to know one another at a time that was not appropriate at this stage in our lives.

His marriage has been wrecked and so has mine. I have lost everything, and now I know that my circumstances and his will not permit us to take any positive step towards coming together. Now I am more miserable than I have ever been, and I am looking for illusionary happiness and lost hopes.

Tit-for-tat

Umm Ahmad tells us:

My husband had a group of married friends, and because of our close friendship with them, we used to get together with them once a week in one of our houses, to enjoy an evening of chat.

Deep down in my heart I was never really comfortable with the atmosphere in which we would have dinner, sweets, snacks and drinks of juice accompanied by waves of laughter because of the jokes and chit-chats that often went beyond the bounds of good manners.

In the name of friendship, the barriers were lifted and every now and then one would hear suppressed laughter between a woman and the husband of another woman. The jokes were too much, dealing – with no sense of shyness –with sensitive topics such as sex and women’s private matters. This was usual and was even accepted and regarded as desirable.

Although I indulged in these things along with them, my conscience made me feel guilty. Then the day came when it became quite clear just how ugly and filthy this atmosphere was.

The telephone rang, and I heard the voice of one of the friends in this group. I said hello to him and apologized that my husband was not home. He replied that he knew that, and that he was calling to speak to me! After he suggested starting a relationship with me, I got very angry and spoke harshly to him and cursed him. All he could do was laugh and say, “Don’t try and show these good manners to me; go and check on your husband’s good manners and see what he is doing…” I was devastated by what he said, but I pulled myself together and said to myself, this person is only trying to cause the break up of your marriage. But he succeeded in planting the seeds of doubt concerning my husband.

Shortly after that, the major disaster struck. I discovered that my husband was cheating on me with another woman. It was the matter of life or death as far as I was concerned. I found my husband out and I confronted him, saying: “You are not the only one who can have a relationship. I have received a similar proposition.” And I told him all about his friend. He was stunned and absolutely shocked. (I said:) “If you want me to respond in kind to your relationship with that woman, then this is for that, tit-for-tat.” This was a huge slap in the face for him. He knew that I did not intend to do that in reality, but he realized the great disaster that had befallen our lives and the immoral atmosphere in which we were living. I suffered a great deal until my husband finally left that loose woman with whom he was having a relationship, as he admitted to me. Yes, he left her and came back to his family and children, but how can I ever feel the same towards him as I used to? Who will restore respect for him in my heart? This huge wound in my heart is still bleeding out of regret and rage at that filthy atmosphere; it still bears testimony to the fact that what they call innocent get-togethers are in reality anything but innocent. My heart still begs for mercy from the Lord of Glory.

Intelligence can also be a temptation (fitnah)

‘Abd al-Fattaah says:

I work as the head of department in one of the big companies. For a long time I admired one of my female colleagues, not for her beauty, but for her serious attitude towards her work, her intelligence and her excellent achievements – in addition to the fact that she was a decent and modest person who focused only on her work. This admiration turned into attachment, and I am a married man who fears Allaah and never misses any obligatory prayer. I expressed my feelings to her and she rebuffed me. She is married and has children as well. She sees no reason why I should have any kind of relationship with her, whether it be friendship, as work colleagues or based on admiration… etc. Evil thoughts come to me sometimes, and deep down I wish that her husband would divorce her so that I could get her.

I started to put pressure on her at work and put her down in front of my bosses. Perhaps this was a form of revenge on my part, but she accepted it with good manners and did not complain or comment. She works and works; her performance speaks of her quality, and she knows this well. The more she resisted me, the stronger my infatuation grew.

I am not a person who is easily tempted by women, because I fear Allaah and I do not overstep the mark with them and go beyond what is required by my work. But this woman attracted me. What is the solution?… I do not know.

Baby ducks know how to swim

N.A.A., a nineteen-year-old girl, tells us:

At that time I was a little girl. My innocent eyes watched those evening get-togethers when family friends would meet in the house. What I remember is that I could only see one man, who was my father. I watched him as he moved about the room, how his glances would devour the women present, looking at their thighs and chests, admiring this one’s eyes, that one’s hair, the other’s hips. My poor mother had no choice but to take care of these get-togethers. She was a very simple lady.

Among the women present there was one woman who would deliberately try to attract my father’s attention, sometimes by coming close to him, and sometimes by making enticing movements. I would watch this with concern, whilst my mother was busy in the kitchen for the sake of her guests.

These gatherings stopped suddenly and I tried, young as I was, to understand and make sense of what had happened, but I could not.

What I remember was that my mother collapsed completely at that time, and she could not stand to hear my father’s name mentioned in the house. I used to hear mysterious words whispered by the adults around me: “Betrayal… bedroom… she saw them with her own eyes… despicable woman… in a very shameful position…” etc. These were the key words which only the adults could understand.

I grew up and came to understand, and I bore a grudge against all men. All of them were treacherous. My mother was a broken woman and accused every woman who came to us of being a man-snatcher who wanted to make my father fall into her trap. My father hasn’t changed. He is still practising his favourite hobby of chasing women, but now he does it outside the home. Now I am nineteen years old and I know lots of young men. I feel great pleasure in taking revenge on them, because every one of them is an exact copy of my father. I tempt them and entice them, without letting them get anywhere near me. They follow me in gatherings and in the marketplaces because of my movements and deliberate gestures. Sometimes my phone never stops ringing and I feel proud of what I do to avenge the sex of Hawwa’ and my mother. But sometimes I feel so miserable and such a failure that it almost chokes me. My life is shadowed by a huge dark cloud, and its name is my father.

Before it is too late

S.N.A. tells of her experience:

I never imagined that my work circumstances would force me to be in contact with the opposite sex (men), but this in fact is what happened…

In the beginning, I used to cover and screen myself from men by wearing niqaab (face-veil), but some of the sisters advised me that this dress was attracting more attention to my presence, and it would be better for me to take off the niqaab, especially since my eyes were somewhat attractive. So I removed the cover from my face, thinking that this was better. But by continuing to mix with my colleagues, I discovered that I was the odd one out because of my antisocial attitude and my insistence on not joining in the conversation and chatting with others. Everyone was wary of this “lone-wolf” woman (as they saw me), and this is what was stated clearly by one person who affirmed that he would not want to deal with such a snooty and stand-offish character. But I knew that I was the opposite, in fact, and I decided that I would not oppress myself and put myself in a difficult position with my colleagues. So I started to join in their chats and exchanges of anecdotes, and they all discovered that I could speak eloquently and persuasively, and that I could influence others. I could also speak in a manner that was determined yet at the same time was attractive to some of my colleagues. It was not long before I noticed some changes in the expression of my direct supervisor; with some embarrassment, he was enjoying the way I spoke and moved, and he would deliberately bring up topics in the conversation where I would see that hateful look in his eyes. I do not deny the fact that I started to entertain some thoughts about this man. I found it astonishing that a man could fall so easily into the trap of a woman who was religiously committed, so how must it be in the case of women who adorn themselves and invite men to commit immoral actions? In fact, I did not think of him in any way which went beyond the bounds of sharee’ah, but he did occupy a space in my thoughts for quite some time. But soon my self-respect made me reject the idea of being a source of enjoyment for this man in any way, shape or form, even if it was only psychological in nature, and I stopped getting involved in any kind of work that would force me to sit alone with him. In the end, I reached the following conclusions:

1- 1) Attraction between the sexes can occur in any circumstances, no matter how much men and women may deny that. The attraction may start within the bounds of sharee’ah and end up going beyond those bounds.

2) Even if a person protects himself (by marriage), he is not safe from the snares of the Shaytaan.

3) Even though a person may be able to guarantee himself and he works with the opposite sex within reasonable limits, he cannot guarantee the feelings of the other party.

4) Finally, there is nothing good in mixing and it does not bear fruit as they claim. On the contrary, it corrupts sound thinking.
