but seriously this comic is amazing

Underwatched Animated Films I Recommend You See at Least Once in Your Life

EDIT: i didn’t expect this post to get so many notes. for the record, these are just my personal recommendations, not a definitive list of best underrated animation. i also did not include anything made by Disney. I know that they made some movies that didn’t get as much attention as their other hits, but lists of underwatched Disney films are pretty common, so I thought I’d make one of films by studios that aren’t household names.

Angel’s Egg (1985)

This movie is a nearly silent film with painstakingly beautiful frames and environmental details. All I can say is that it is a real piece of art worth watching and can be watched on YouTube here.

Les Triplets de Belleville (The Triplets of Belleville) (2005)

An incredibly quirky, strange and humorous French film, also with almost no dialogue. The colors, creative storytelling, and almost caricature-like designs make the Triplets a must-see. The setting and timeframe is left sort of abstract, but it’s a clear transition from last-century rural France to the hustle and bustle of urban America. Lots of homage is paid to cartoons from the 1920s.

Mindgame (2004)

This movie, quite like the title says, blew my mind. It’s also incredibly strange and out-there, but the awkward imagery gives way to real emotion and huge payoff by the end. The colors and animation are delightful, and always tailored to the situation. It is an amazing intersection of an altered state, a love story, a struggle to get home, an existential trip, and an unlikely group of friends. I almost always cry when I watch this. Seriously, can’t stress this enough. There is absolutely nothing like Mindgame.

Le Chat du Rabbin (The Rabbi’s Cat) (2011)

Rabbi’s Cat is a French film based on a French comic by the same name. The comic artist also directed the movie. Honestly, the dialogue  in this is unmatched. Both Cat and Rabbi are witty and have the best banter. The setting is one of the most unique and real-feeling I’ve ever seen a film take place in: a Jewish community in Algeria. It’s wonderful and incredibly charming, could not recommend more.

Tekkonkinkreet (2006)

This movie hits me on a number of levels. I have so much love for the two orphans, Black and White. The story quickly becomes raw and almost difficult, as it touches on a lot of the feelings we see in things like Grave of the Fireflies, but in a much more abstract way and on a much grander scale. Also less sad, but there are very sad parts also. I guess the best way to describe this movie is intense. While there are a lot of sweet, domestic moments, none of the gruesome reality is sugercoated for you.

The visuals are all completely stunning; the art is on another level. Treasure Town is a rich, fantastical environment and the characters flow through it effortlessly, like water. You gotta see this at least once in your life.

Chico and Rita (2010)

An American/Spanish romance between an aspiring piano player and a young singer. The film opens in Cuba and has a vibrant and unique visual style while exploring a multitude of music styles and cultural backdrops. It’s touching and sweet, but does not erase the hardships of being a black music star in America or living through the Castro regime.

Wizards (1977)

Ralph Bakshi is notorious for underappreciated gems. Wizards is set in a post-apocalyptic fantasy world where magic is real and man has survived the radiation to evolve into fairies, elves, and dwarves. It’s a classic nature vs industry story with Bakshi’s unique spin. My favorite character is Necron 99, the assassin robot turned pacifist. I’ll warn you though, Bakshi films aren’t everyone’s taste (he’s responsible for Fritz the Cat, which against my better judgement I recommend as well).

Wizards was completed during the dark age of animation, and its fascinating to see how Bakshi gets around these limitations to produce something that grossed more than twice its budget.

Memories (1995)

Memories is a three part anthology based on three different manga short stories, Magnetic Rose, Stink Bomb, and Cannon Fodder. While the entirety of the movie is beautifully animated and worth the watch, the best of these is the first one. It is a mysterious, tragic sci-fi horror short film set in space and worked on by Satoshi Kon (so of course its amazing).

I have been wanting to make this joke since I started reading @wilyart‘s Insomnia comic, so I finally did it.

No regrets.

Now go read Insomnia, it’s an amazing comic with beautiful art and an incredibly well written and thought out story.

The Totally Awesome Hulk #15

is the MOST AMAZING COMIC I HAVE EVER READ.

Like seriously, as an Asian American, it covers basically everything I have ever dreamed of in a comic.

Silk loves karaoke

There are cosplayers

They talk about representation.

And blatant racial stereotyping.

And microagressions.

And parental expectations of you.

And they fight over the dinner bill. Literally.

A short little comic idea I’ve had for a while. Didn’t want to draw it until now because I wanted it to ‘look nice’, but now I threw out the’ look nice’ part and just drew it. This is how I felt about the Undertale fandom.

I had played the game but was slightly scared to dig deeper into the fandom to find out what all new designs meant. I didn’t fall into the ‘AU world’ until I saw loverofpiggies Error sans. I swam even deeper into the AU fandom when I found comyet Ink Sans and I’ve only continued to love every new AU and drawing I see and come across.

Thank you for making me love Undertale, this is the best fandom I’ve ever been in and I plan to stay for a loooong time.

@loverofpiggies @comyet @corefrisk @askspacesans @danny-trash @renrink @kuttiesstuff @miya-sheep @tratserenoyreve @yoralim @ttoba @undertaleau

(Now that my tagging wants to work, I tag everyone who helped me absolutely love the Undertale AU universe. The blogs that I found first and made me understand the fandom more. Everyone deserves all the love, everyone in this whole fandom. Hugs for everyone, you are an amazing person every single one of you. I love you tagged people for making me love Undertale. And I love you other people who aren’t tagged because you are who you are.)

A little piece to celebrate beautiful Elektra #1!

I fell in love as soon as I saw the comic. I highly recommend– it’s absolutely stunning. :) <3

>Hey bud i love your comics theyre hilarious. I cant believe i haven’t seen them until now. I have an idea for a strip if you wouldnt mind? After negan sees shiva at the end of season 7 hes adamant he wants a tiger but they cant find one so he throws a spoiled baby tantrum and Simon ends up making Dwight sit by negans feet in a tiger onsie/costume?

Hello! Seriously, you are a genius!!!! I laughed so hard by just reading the comment you’ve submitted to me lol. And thanks for all of your nice words! I’m so happy and had fun with your amazing idea <3 I hope this isn’t too far from what you’ve imagined. Thanks again!

Cursed Child rant

Alright, Witches, Wizards, Muggles, and magical creatures big and small, hold onto your broomsticks because I’m about to tell you why I do not like Harry Potter and the Cursed Child nor accept it as canon.

Spoilers ahead. Obviously. but c’mon who hasn’t read it or been spoiled by now Also, it got super long.

Let’s start off by saying: it’s been months since I read it. If I get some things off a little, go ahead and tell me; I’ll edit the rant and correct it. If you just don’t agree with me… that’s great for you. Okay? We good? That’s all the disclaimer you’re getting. Moving on!

Where do I begin? Um… Let’s recap shall we?

It starts with Albus Severus Potter (who’s name I still cannot get over) meeting and becoming friends with Scorpius Malfoy.

Okay. Great. We’ve all wanted that for years. No problem.

We’ve also played with the idea of Albus in Slytherin for years. I have no problem with that either.

What I do have problems with is the way Albus is treated after he is put in Slytherin. He’s the outcast of his family. He’s the “disappointing son”. After Harry’s canon “the bravest man I knew was Slytherin” speech (don’t get me started on Snape), I expected a bit better treatment of Slytherins. But Albus is Slytherin and looked at sideways by the entire cast, except Scorpius. This could easily become a rant about Slytherin’s and stereotypes and treatment, but I give enough of those already.

My issues are mostly with Albus’ personality. Now, I didn’t write the character. He’s not mine. I don’t have the authority to tell anyone how he should be. All I can do is have headcanons. But “canon” Albus doesn’t exactly display a lot of Slytherin traits. Sure he sneaks around, but so does Harry, Ron, and Hermione and they’re all Gryffindor. If my memory serves me correctly, Albus goes to Slytherin because he basically thinks, “Well, the Gryffindors I know suck, let’s try Slytherin.”it’s been a while since I read it okay

Albus is jaded by the time the plot picks up. He doesn’t like flying, isn’t that good at it or Quidditch (which honestly feels like they’re just trying to make him as unlike Harry as possible which I could handle if it wasn’t so badly written), and is basically convinced his life is horrible. (I’ll get into why a little later.) This kid shows no Slytherin traits that I remember. He hardly shows any traits really. I think it was the play format, but Albus becomes a stereotypical teenager who has daddy issues and doesn’t like his life.

Scorpius I don’t really have a big problem with, besides it going against my personal headcanons. He at least shows a bit more Slytherin traits than jaded Albus. I feel like they were trying to break Slytherin stereotypes with him- which is great and all, but it almost makes me feel like that’s all Scorpius’ personality was. As if he was made to simply disrupt our preconceived ideas of what Slytherin is. I don’t like it. Stereotypes are something I can’t stand, but come on, people, don’t strip my house of what we actually are.

Okay, moving on from Slytherin.

Let’s take a step back from the new characters and visit the one’s we already know, we already love. Oh wait, they’ve been ripped to shreds.

Thank both of you so much for sharing your insane and amazing ability to story-tell with such beautiful/messed up characters in such a way that I could come back to it and still feel /heartbroken/ mesmerized. X3

I wonder if the developers had ever met a baby. Maybe they’d just sort of heard about them in passing and missed the whole “will bawl eyes out when strange things are happening like being out in the freezing cold before dawn, surrounded by giant stomping monsters”.

(But bizarrely well-behaved babies aside, Horizon Zero Dawn is amazing and oh my god they have female characters who are treated like normal capable human beings with no stupid sexy armour and people of all sorts of races and its not treated like a big deal in this world and ROBOT DINOSAURS YOU CAN RIDE oh my god seriously you have to play it)
