but no seriously this is my favorite book ever now

NetGalley Book Review: Assassin’s Fate

Guys. Guys. GUYS!!!!! Look! Look at this! Isn’t it beautiful? It’s the one, the only, the FINAL installment of the Fitz and the Fool trilogy. Which is in turn, the final installment (as far as I know) in the Realm of the Elderlings series.

If nothing I just said made any sense to you, I recommend going to your nearest source of books and looking up Assassin’s Apprentice by Robin Hobb. It’s the first book in the series and, as such, is wonderful and amazing and just trust me, you need it in your life. Go do that now. It’s the kind of series that will emotionally destroy you in the best possible way.

The final book in the Fitz and the Fool trilogy.

Prince FitzChivalry Farseer’s daughter Bee was violently abducted from Withywoods by Servants of the Four in their search for the Unexpected Son, foretold to wield great power. With Fitz in pursuit, the Servants fled through a Skill-pillar, leaving no trace. It seems certain that they and their young hostage have perished in the Skill-river.

Clerres, where White Prophets were trained by the Servants to set the world on a better path, has been corrupted by greed. Fitz is determined to reach the city and take vengeance on the Four, not only for the loss of Bee but also for their torture of the Fool. Accompanied by FitzVigilant, son of the assassin Chade, Chade’s protégé Spark and the stableboy Perseverance, Bee’s only friend, their journey will take them from the Elderling city of Kelsingra, down the perilous Rain Wild River, and on to the Pirate Isles.

Their mission for revenge will become a voyage of discovery, as well as of reunions, transformations and heartrending shocks. Startling answers to old mysteries are revealed. What became of the liveships Paragon and Vivacia and their crews? What is the origin of the Others and their eerie beach? How are liveships and dragons connected?

But Fitz and his followers are not the only ones with a deadly grudge against the Four. An ancient wrong will bring them unlikely and dangerous allies in their quest. And if the corrupt society of Clerres is to be brought down, Fitz and the Fool will have to make a series of profound and fateful sacrifices.

ASSASSIN’S FATE is a magnificent tour de force and with it Robin Hobb demonstrates yet again that she is the reigning queen of epic fantasy. (Synopsis from Goodreads)

It was everything. Literally, this book takes all of the trilogies and quartets that comprise the Realm of the Elderlings series, and bring them all together. So if you haven’t read them or thought they might not be important to the Farseer story? I’d advise you take some time and do that now. This is both a weakness and a strength in my opinion, and let me tell you why:

Top Three Shows:  Ever? or that i’m watching right now….   I’m watching grace and frankie with my mom  and Voyager with my kid.   but on my own probably Orphan Black is one I’d like to get into again,  I’ve missed a lot.

Top Three Characters : why am i so confused by these questions lol,   of my own? or any other thing?  I’ll do other things-   this is probably not actually my top 3, cause to figure that out i’d have to list everything I ever loved and do it methodically,  but these are the top three I can think of off the top of my head.  -  Helena from Orphan Black- adorable and completely creepy at the same time.   Death from the Discworld series,  Daryl from walking dead.

Top Three Ships: gotta do my own for this, cause i’ve never really actively shipped other things.   So..   Xave and Wynter is my absolute top one.  They aren’t perfect together, they have things that they have to work through, but they love each other.  we’ll get there eventually,  which kind of sucks to know the end, but, oh well.   Teo and Eden. They’re so adorable, and the one that is like “what?  how the heck did they end up together?”  they are the biggest head scratch, but they work.  Kit and Caelen by @hureuf    -  i haven’t posted them on tumblr yet,  but  they’re precious.

The ongoing saga of whether or not the UK will continue to record its laws on vellum is seriously my favorite thing happening in the news right now. Because it’s like:

Every American I have ever met on an airplane upon learning I’m a rare book librarian: “So, will you even have a job once everything is digitized? Because like once it’s all digitized we can just burn all the books. Pulp ‘em. Toss them out the window. Make some space for the future.”

They literally offered a class last week in my university’s main library on how to recover digital data from floppy disks that are like 15 years old. The UK is wringing its hands about paper because it might only last 500 years. Just think about the difference in scale there.

It’s so interesting. Kirschenbaum writes in Mechanism of two modes of ensuring the longevity of information: proliferation and durability. In the former, the idea is that the more copies there are the more likely something is to survive. If you make a million copies of a book, for example, even if half are destroyed you still have 500,000 books. In the latter, you try to make one stable version that will endure. The former is the underlying principle of ‘the internet is forever.’ The latter is the Trajan column–it’s Ozymandias. The former is why insects reproduce on a scale of hundreds with the expectation that most will perish; the latter is the gestation of elephants, one at a time.

I’m overgeneralizing, but I guess what I’m suggesting is that Americans are really into proliferation–the way to save ideas is to spread them. The UK is really into durability–the way to save ideas is to preserve them, hermetically sealed in calf skin.

Oh more questions!

1.-  At what point did you discover your interest in writing?

Dunno, if there was ever an exact point… like I always liked to read and I reall loved those school assignments where you got to write your own stories, I had an (now deleted) ffnet account where I posted some fics - mostly for books and movies - and then I abandoned due to some… personal issues and my college.. it wasn’t until past year that I retook it seriously really, and realized my major was actually helpful with it in some level.

3.-  What is your favorite genre to write?

Family drama I think? Like yeah lots of what I’ve done recently have to do with pairings because that’s the demand :P (not that I’m complaining mind you) but when it comes to family issues and disfunctionalities, I feel like I’m in my element.

10.-  What are some of the most common themes/topics in your stories?

Beyod the aforementioned family drama and self-indulging pairings? I believe I use a lot of “coming of age” themes on my stories, you know growing pains, discovering your true self, learning about the world, finding your call in life… that sort of thing.

That’s for young characters; for older characters I write a lot about coping, losses, child raising, ambitions, paving your way into the world at large etc.

Matthew B. Roberts Twitter Q&A

Since I’m in the holiday spirit… How about a short Q&A? #Outlander

Q: How long has it been since you’ve read the whole series?
A: I read the books as they were published #Outlander

Q: Are you going to South Africa, Matt?
A: Yes, I’ll be in South Africa the whole time…

Q: I love your photography.  Will you every publish a book with your photographs?
A: One day I’ll do a book or exhibit of photographs but right now I’m just too busy with #Outlander

Q: Hi Matt, it’s my birthday today and it would be a real gift if you could share your favorite quote from Voyager
A: “Is that you Geordie?” #Outlander

Q: Hit Matt.  Is it difficult when you have to change the storyline a little for tv?  Besides people complaining lol
A: It’s a challenge to fit all the juicy parts of the books into 59 mins. And as you know there’s a lot of juice in these books

Q: Did you have to work the entire holiday?
A: Most of it.  My guess is you want to see #Outlander S3

Q: Whoa! I’ve never been on here when one of these starts. Where to begin? My mind is blank! #Outlander
A: What a time to have writer’s block Arrgh!

Q: Somewhere you and your camera want to go that you haven’t been before?
A: Iceland, New Zealand, Australia, Norway… and the list goes on

Q: Matt what do you do when you have writer’s block? or do you get writer’s block?
A: Reading and research is the best cure for writer’s block (for me).

Q: How many months in advance a location need to be chosen latest to start prep on time?
A: It depends on how complicated the scene is but at least 6 weeks some even more. #Outlander

Manic Monday March 2

Hello all! I’m trying something new for the month of March and going to be trying to put up some new and different content (more on this tomorrow). But for today I’m putting a list of some of the things I’m currently really interested in up! :)

What I’m reading:

This is an incredibly unique and inventive series of short stories, while branded as a series of “love stories” is actually a very unique series of stories about the danger of devotion. Parameswaran is quite a writer, able to spin together a dozen threads of narrative in only a few pages and his unreliable narrators will always leave you wondering.

What I’m studying:

Trying to do a couple pages a night in preparation for taking Step 2 in March!

What I’m drinking:
Americanos. I think I mentioned a couple of weeks ago the fact that I was getting super obsessed with Americanos. It’s probably because I had never really had one until a couple of weeks ago and now I just can’t get enough of them.

What I’m eating:

I am absolutely in love with these new yogurts I found recently at Target. They’re incredibly creamy and just so decadent for health food. They also happen to have a super ridiculous amount of protein in them so I can grab one on my way out the door and not be hungry again almost immediately the way I am with lots of yogurts. Plus they come in awesome flavors—I mean strawberry rhubarb?! Where else can you get that??

What I’m obsessed with:

Washi tape. Seriously guys, I know you’ve heard about this stuff before and probably wrote it off as something for the Martha-Stewart scrapbook type, but this shit is amazing. I use it to organize my calendars, to decorate notebooks, to make cute cards for Sweetheart. It’s the most useful stuff I’ve ever found and now I want it in EVERY color possible (which is a crap ton of colors).
PLUS it sticks really easily but is also removable and doesn’t ruin papers or books. Incredible.

What I’m listening to:
My current favorite song (of the week) is Manhattan from Sara Bareilles’s The Blessed Unrest.

What I’m cooking:

Strawberry and blueberry coffee cake. Perfection.

What I’m looking forward to:
Getting away for the weekend with Sweetheart as a late Valentine’s day/celebrate the end of step/our 6 month anniversary!! I don’t know quite where we’re going yet but probably just doing something close and quick since I’ll have to be back at work on Monday.

What I’m organizing:

New notebook!! I’m trying a new layout for my next notebook with more calendar pages and more pretty stuff!! I’m going to be doing a video on it sometime this month.

What I’m shopping for:
Cute work tops. Seriously having a hard time finding good shirts to wear to work!! If anyone has any good suggestions for places where I can find cute (and ridiculously petite) tops to wear to work in fun prints I would LOVE to know

What I’m buying:

Since I just bought these babies I’m trying to not buy too much right now!! Haha. But so far they’ve been worth all the money. These are the La Sportiva Vibran Grip 2 climbing does and they’re just so much more aggressive a style than my old Evolves were. They really help using those teeny tiny foot holds on more advanced routes.

What I’m wishing:
Third year was over already!

What I’m needing:
At least four more hours in a day every day.
