i’m really sick of people saying that jojo has good lgbt rep, so i’m gonna talk a little bit on the homophobia in jjba.
-having DIO as a bi/pan man characterizes mlm as egomaniacs and narcissists, as well as abusive and extremely sexual, it also uses the stereotype of bi/pan people using multiple people for throwaway sex. it’s not good lgbt representation when it’s the big baddie of the series, sorry.
-we all get really psyched about the fact that jolyne was supposed to have a gf! i was too until i found out that the gf was a female annasui. having annasui be the lesbian would perpetuate a ton of very harmful stereotypes, such as the predatory lesbian, the pining lesbian who’s seen as an afterthought (I’m in no way sympathizing w/ annasui rn), and also a little bit of the good old “lesbians fall in love so easily (uhaul)”. but the main, big issue is of course how annasui is characterized as a creep who killed an ex, and is deeply, unwantingly, and very obsessively in love with jolyne. bad bad lesbian stereotypes to say the least.
-another greaaat lesbian characterization is in sbr, with fv’s wife, mrs.valentine. she’s another type of stereotype, the “perfect wife” who’s actually secretly a “nasty” lesbian who is so desperate for the female touch that she will go after a 13-14yo girl for sexual pleasure. this frames lesbians as predatory, again, pedophiles (another huge homophobic stereotype that’s seen….a lot in jojo) and just….the bad premise of a woman being married to a man, but a lesbian in secret. i think we’re all tired of that “sinful desires” concept
-of course the good ol’ transphobic scene with “tequila joseph” where he mockingly dresses up as a woman who is obviously ““not passing”“ and talks in the normal man in a dress manor, and is turned away by the guards. man in a dress is seen eeeverywhere and it’s a lazy transphobic joke!! i don’t trust people who find this scene funny. in short it uses a man dressing up as a woman but obviously being a man as a big funny punchline and uhhh…you can see the issue there hopefully
-also the scene in sdc where joseph and avdol are magnetized together is using gay men having sex as a joke. wow. hilarious. also avdol being about 30~ years younger than joseph doesn’t make the joke any better. it goes off of the notion that older gay men will actively seek out fresh new young adults.
there are a lot more little things seen without jojo, so these are just the big ones that really struck me and made me angry with the series. you all know i love jojo!! i think it’s a very creative and fun series that does a pretty good job playing with relationships and presentation, but the bottom line is, jojo has a lot it needs to improve on in terms of lgbt rep. we’ve only ever gotten whispers and vague sentences in interviews of protags being lgbt, and that doesn’t in any way make up for the way lgbt characters are made into predators and villains and trivialized in many parts of jojo.
this post is in no way meant to stop you from loving jojo or say that i don’t love jojo, but the way these characters and themes are presented needs to be addressed!! no series is without its fault, we just need to keep pushing for it to be better. thank you for reading this if you did. if you have anything to add or if anything i said seems off or wrong contact me or rb this post with it!
