advice for college freshmen:

tolkien your essays; hemingway your emails

essays are tangents and rabbit holes and diversions, woven together with lots of unnecessary descriptive words to demonstrate a proficient understanding of a subject you were meant to research in more depth but did not, in place of other pursuits, or could not, because you chose your subject poorly, and so now you must flesh out an arduous ten-page research paper and convince your scrutinizing instructor that you are well-versed in the topic at hand.

emails are blunt. say what you mean. be specific. end it quickly.

This came up thanks to @asirenscalling because, while I was rewatching Daredevil, we started to talk about this scenario, so thank her for this.

Also @sexylibrarian1 said she needed it and @thecrownedrose because she’s amazing and we like to spoil each other.

Okay, so I am DM'ing a campaign and my players are picking up a package from a black market merchant. I've built this package up to be pretty ominous an dangerous, but I don't know what the package is...help?

Skin that can transform to look like any human, and sound like them despite being made of only skin. No eyeballs. No vocal cords. Its smart, tricky, and can grow larger by taking more flesh from others.

A [item] that is actually a lich’s phylactery. The package gives off bad luck and gives villagers a sense of dread.

The package has a small opening for food. You cannot see inside of it. You are given several packages for food. You are to give one a day [or however often you want]. Each serving gets bigger and bigger until the last one, which is a butchered body. The thing inside the package has no troubles getting everything through the small opening. [could be an ooze, a quickly growing hatchling, etc]

A large number of cockatrice eggs. Touch them with your bare hands, you turn to stone. You crack any eggs, they hatch and cause chaos.

A meteorite. It hums. It whispers to those around it. It can control metal objects within 30 meters, so long as the metal objects aren’t held by a player.

INTJs + Enneagrams
  • INTJ 1: The "Get shit done" INTJ. Very disciplined and eager to realize all of their dreams (and to impose their dreams on everyone around them). Full of nervous energy. Needs to seriously take a chill pill every once in a while.
  • INTJ 2: The weirdest INTJ you will ever know. They alternate between loving everyone and hating everyone with equal fervor. Loving others with so much intensity feels like a constant noose around their necks. (Note: Many INTJ 2s get mistyped as INFJ).
  • INTJ 3: The "Disney Villain" in the flesh. Comes across as very vain and eager to manipulate others to further their own success. Tend to have very low empathy and might often fake their feelings. Don't ever get on their bad side lest you're prepared to suffer the consequences.
  • INTJ 4: The most creative of any INTJ type; many of them are musicians, actors or visual artists. They struggle from an unstable sense of identity and might frequently seek approval from others, something most INTJs rarely do. May display symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder.
  • INTJ 5: The "know-it-all" intellectual who legitimately is smarter than most of the people they're around. Enjoys literature, esoteric studies, and can't stand simplicity or ignorance in others. Can be arrogant and overly judgmental, sometimes even narcissistic. (Note: Most INTJs test as enneagram 5).
  • INTJ 6: The fearful watchdog with obsessive-compulsive behavior patterns. They are prone to bouts of paranoia and worrying that "the world is out to get them". Tend to be loners and have trouble making or keeping friends.
  • INTJ 7: The walking contradiction - thoughtful yet spontaneous, cautious yet erratic in their decision making. They love to be challenged but can often take their challenging nature to unpleasant extremes. May have marked psychopathic or sociopathic traits.
  • INTJ 8: The (not so) quiet storm. Very turbulent mood swings and unpredictable behavior patterns. They are either your best friend or your worst enemy; there is no in-between. They use their words to wound those who cross them, not their fists.
  • INTJ 9: The mopey rain cloud. Depressed, unmotivated, and just trying to "go through the motions" of life. Their "who cares" demeanor is a flimsy cover for all the self-loathing they carry around inside. Can be overly clingy or controlling with people who manage to earn their trust.

anonymous asked:

I absolutely LOVED your response about monetizing cosplay. I cosplay, craft, sew, and construst every single piece I do. Despite that I go to cons and the cosplayers that get the attention are women who are half-naked. honestly it makes me feel less..well, less. Like people don't pay attention to my work because i'm not flashing my flesh. I love my craft but i hate that it feels like I have to be naked for people to notice my work. Is that horrible?

TBH, if you were half naked it wouldn’t be your *work* people would be noticing. That’s just the nature of it. Scantily clad, attractive women will always get attention. As a cosplayer, you have to decide what kind of attention you are looking for, because not every audience is made equally.

People who are primarily interested in looking at cosplay they can jerk off to are *usually* not also interested in your construction techniques (There are exceptions to every rule, of course, but generally.) The people who appreciate sewing and crafting and technical details are *usually* less interested in whether you are hot or not. Usually. (Being hot always helps.)

There are more people in column A than in column B. Like I mentioned in my post about monetization, creating sexy images is the most lucrative thing you can do with cosplay. Lingerie shoots are almost always more popular than handcrafted costumes, because there are way more people in the world who like looking at hot chicks than people who really care about the intricacies of how a costume is made. (Some like both, but generally.)

But this is the main point I’m trying to make here: What kind of content you post determines what kind of people decide to follow you. What you wear to a convention determines who decides to stop you for a photo or to talk shop about costuming. What you add to this community determines who responds back to you, and how.

I’m not here to discredit ANYONE’S approach, but I can speak from my own experience. I cosplay because I’m passionate about art, and I want to connect with other artists. So I spend my time making detailed costumes and learning new skills. I regularly make posts discussing my materials and techniques, so that I can share what I’ve learned and maybe teach others. In return, I’ve made many friends who also care about crafting and learning, and cultivated a community of people who are invested in that discussion. That’s pretty amazing. I might not have a hundred thousand followers or a monthly paycheck, but that’s not what I was expecting when I decided to do things this way.

That’s just my experience. Everyone has their own unique approach. You might read all this and decide that sexy cosplay is the way to go, and that’s fine. You’re in charge of your own experience. But I hope this provides some perspective.

Your last line – “Is that horrible?” – has me wondering if you feel some guilt over your feelings about sexy cosplayers. Correct me if I’m reading that wrong. But the last thing I want to leave you with is this: if you’re feeling jealousy and resentment towards the women who do “sexy cosplay” for the attention they’re getting, you only sour your own experience. I know because I’ve struggled with it myself in the past. Your feelings don’t change the facts of the world, but understanding how it works and what to expect from your efforts can help you move forward. Good luck.

Snape Appreciation Month Day 3: Head of Slytherin

  • Filch: Anyway, I found the body wedged between broomstricks. Can you ask Dumbledore to ask the Ministry if they want to have a look? I think this is something they’d care about but I’m not too sure. They don't let me out of the school
  • Severus: I'm not sure he has the time. He just handed me the House Cup for the fourth year in a row.

So what happened to Gilbert and Ludwig's mother? I mean I know canonically they said nothing about their mom, but you came up with a backstory for Romano and Feli's parents(car accident. I teared up). You don't have to answer. I was just curious. And it might help you flesh out the Germanic family.

Oh, I put the backstory of the mother in there! It’s just not as crystal clear as the Italian brothers one.

I just like to put in little hints of story, you can find them all over. If you pay attention to it though ;) But if you found it here (and speak German, that helps.. yea that helps) You can see that Germania is calling and what he is saying: “What?! You’re not coming back?! We have two childeren together! You can’t do this to me! To Ludwig and Gilbert!” And if you really pay attention well, you see that Germania is shaking from anger.

So what happened to the mother of Gilbert and Ludwig? She left. (Let the water works flow! Or be angry at the mother, I would understand that too) Should I maybe let the mom appear in the comic at some point? Let me know.

Thanks to my mother though, because I actually don’t speak any German (Or any language besides English and Dutch) So all the love to her for the translations!

From the trailer for in the flesh it looks like it's just about zombies, but I don't think people would love it this much if that's all it was about (or, I mean. People love the walking dead:/ I guess I don't think people who also love skam would think just a zombie apocalypse is enough). So what's it really about, what makes it great?

It’s in moments like this I regret having deleted my ITF sideblog.

Usually we, In The Flesh fans, omit mentioning that they are zombies in because we know what it makes it look like and how it deter people from watching. But you know already so here goes:

In The Flesh is a BBC TV series created and written by Dominic Mitchell, a lovely bean who’s always in touch with the fandom and makes most of his characters queer.

The show starts after a zombie apocalypse: the dead rose from their graves, people fought The Walking Dead style, except…a cure was found.

OK so it’s not really a cure, it’s a drug (the Neurotryptiline) that makes the Partially Deceased Syndrome sufferers better. It restores the mental abilities they had before turning into zombies, makes them like they were. Only they’re still dead. And they have to take the drug (that has side effects) every day. If they miss a dose, they might revert back to their rabid state.

Quickly, the government decides to release these treated PDS sufferers into their old homes (despite a lot of people being against that decision and downright just killing any PDS sufferer, treated or not, who crosses their paths), and Kieren Walker is one of them.

Before the Rising, Kieren committed suicide. But now he’s alive again, more or less, and being send back to his family after such an act, well…it’s not going to be easy.
Especially seeing as his parents and sister still live in Roarton, a small English village famous for giving birth to the violent HVF: Human Volunteer Force.

The show has canon queer characters and relationships and portrays mental illness the most realistic and respectful way I’ve ever seen in a TV series (with SKAM). It has great cinnamontrography, complex and flawed characters, doesn’t talk down to its viewers, and did I mention queer people? (oh and it won a BAFTA)
Worth mentioning that it’s very white (like SKAM) unfortunately.

It’s only two seasons (9 episodes) long and it’s one of the best shows I’ve ever watched and you should just go give the first 10 minutes a try you’ll see what I mean (here are the first 3 minutes readily accessible)

Sorry for the wall of text. I really hope you do give it a try.

potatocomets  asked:

Just wondering, of the 418 characters of the Speech, have you ever fleshed out an orthography? It's been described in so many different ways from sharing expressions with calculus to looking like arabic. I understand keeping the mystery of it, and I don't want to seeing anything, but I am still curious how extensively you've worked on any of the Speech orthography or otherwise

I’ve tried it a number of times (in terms of graphics) and have yet to get a result I liked. The closest I’ve seen in popular culture that I thought “Hey, it could be like that” was the above-and-below-a-line alien graphics associated with the opening of the “map” device in TREASURE PLANET.

Sorry not to be more help on this, but this issue has been bedeviling me for a long while now, and I suspect it’ll keep on doing so.

bael-bard  asked:

Hey, PQ. What is the significanсe of Dany being able to bare children at the end of ADWD? Just to give more weight to her eventual death? (knowing that there is a chance for her to have a child but sacrificing it to save the world) If so, is is she getting pregnant? And on completely unrelated note: why don't you believe in Jojen Paste? It is well supported and fits thematically within Bran's storyline (which gets progressively creepier), ADWD as a whole (cannibalism is heavily present in it)

… and even ties into Euron’s storyline. Bloody sacrifices for magic powerups are very effective, as we are about to see in second Aeron chapter. Also Euron drinks shade of the evening to open his third eye, and it smells like rotten flesh and spoiled meat (dead people?) before you drink it and it twists your perception.”

1) Here’s the thing: you could argue that Dany’s miscarriage on the Dothraki Sea is evidence that MMD’s curse has lifted or was never real to begin with, or you could argue that the miscarriage demonstrates that the curse is still very much in effect. We’ll have to wait and see which it is.

2) I’m not exactly opposed to Jojenpaste; it’s neither logistically implausible nor thematically off-base. As you note, cannibalism is *everywhere* in ADWD (h/t @nobodysuspectsthebutterfly), including in Bran I, when he and his companions eat human meat that Coldhands pretends is pork. So there’s a foundation for this theory. And yet, I still lean against it.

It’s true that shade of the evening smells like corpses. But it’s not, y’know, composed of them. It’s made from the leaves of the trees growing outside the House of the Undying. When Bran eats the paste in question, its evolving flavor is a clear parallel to evening’s shade…

The first sip tasted like ink and spoiled meat, foul, but when she swallowed it seemed to come to life within her. She could feel tendrils spreading through her chest, like fingers of fire coiling around her heart, and on her tongue was a taste like honey and anise and cream, like mother’s milk and Drogo’s seed, like red meat and hot blood and molten gold.

It had a bitter taste, though not so bitter as acorn paste. The first spoonful was the hardest to get down. He almost retched it right back up. The second tasted better. The third was almost sweet. The rest he spooned up eagerly. Why had he thought that it was bitter? It tasted of honey, of new-fallen snow, of pepper and cinnamon and the last kiss his mother ever gave him.

…which suggests to me that what Bran was eating was also a plant-based hallucinogen. As in, weirwood paste, exactly what he’s told it is. And as many have noted, the two plants have inverted colors, further cementing this relationship.

Moreover, much of the oft-stated evidence for Jojenpaste doesn’t hold up. It’s true that Bran compares the paste to blood, but we’ve already been told that weirwood sap looks remarkably like blood. The theory hinges on Jojen “vanishing” in Bran III ADWD, and it’s true that when Bran returns to their sleeping quarters after eating the paste, neither Reed sibling is around. But…yeah, neither of them are around. There’s no point in the chapter in which Jojen has disappeared and Meera is still in sight. So unless the Children ground Meera up too (and why would they), the Reeds’ absence isn’t evidence of something bad specifically happening to Jojen.

Finally, from a structural standpoint: it strikes me as very awkward to have Bran eat Jojen in ADWD but then wait to reveal it until TWOW. How will GRRM manage that transition? When we return to Bran’s POV, will he somehow not have noticed Jojen’s absence? Or will he already know, and we have to be caught up on something that really ought to be an agonizing reveal we experience as Bran does? Either way seems unlikely to me.

Heyo! I was wondering if you had any advice on fleshing out characters. Mine have been in the workings for months and I still don't feel like they're up to scratch.

I think it’s perfectly ok if you don’t feel as though your characters are up to scratch just yet. Once you start writing with them, placing them into scenarios, your character’s personalities and traits will slowly begin to flesh themselves out. This also allows for a bit of flexibility with your writings and characters.

But if you want to get a bit more of a handle on your characters, here are a few tips that helped me. I take it you already have their pasts worked out? Well, let’s focus on personalities and motives then.

First, what are your character’s motives? Since this is set in an EO game, what are their connections to the labyrinth? Why are they explorers? If they’re not explorers, why not? Is one of your characters trying to honour their family name? Are they searching for a missing loved one? Are they veterans? Are they exploring for fame? Are they explorers because they find the prospect exciting but have no idea what they’re getting themselves into? Or are they explorers simply because there’s nothing better to do in this piss-ant town?

Also, you should remember that your characters are individuals, so they will react to situations differently. No two characters are the same. They may have similarities, but they will still react differently.

To individualise your characters, try a few writing exercises. Imagine all your characters in the same scene. How would each of them react?

For example; your characters are at the bar when a barfight breaks out. Who;
Started the fight?
Rolled their eyes and moved to a quieter place?
Is swinging punches indiscriminately?
Is trying to avoid getting involved but is dragged in anyway?
Literally jumped atop of tables to get in the middle of the fight?
Would have a panic attack and hide under the table?
Would be comforting the one having a panic attack?
Is cursing loudly because they know they’re the one who has to put an end to the fight?
Is sitting back and commentating sarcastically in the background?
Finds the entire thing amusing and is watching with a shit-eating grin on their face?
Is threatening to burn this entire place to the ground if they don’t stop with this bullshit?
Is face down at the bar, oblivious to all?

You don’t need to answer those questions above. They’re examples. I simply mean imagine all your characters in the same scene and then focus on them one at a time, writing how each of them would respond. It might come out a little stilted at first, but you’ll soon get into the feel and start writing them all with different reactions.

A few other scenarios to flesh out your characters are;
Their reactions to their first dangerous mission.
Their first encounter with a FOE.
They find a guard bloodied and near death.
Their first time staying overnight in the labyrinth.

When writing, it really is better to show rather than to tell. For example, you’ve stated that a character is quite the chill dude. Don’t just tell the reader. Show them. How is this character chill? How chill are they? Are they chill because they’re calm and optimistic? Or are they chill because they literally don’t give a shit? Are they chill all the time? Or do they have moments where they are genuinely angry and furious?

Also, your characters will have more than one personality trait. A character that is calm can have a tipping point. A character who is stoic can react desperately when the person they care about most is in danger. A character that is loud and cheerful can be hiding a dark secret. Give them a positive trait and a negative trait.

As an author, it’s important to remember that you don’t have to reveal everything about your characters all at once. It’s a process. You can reveal their secrets and motives a bit at a time.  A hint here, a hint there. That sort of thing.

I think it’s better if I stop it here or it’ll get too rambly ^^ The short version is; simply write about your characters. Try a few writing exercises. Imagine them reacting to scenarios, both pleasant and unpleasant. Know that your characters will grow during the course of the story.

Hope that helps!

Let's get this (snow)ball rolling again...

Hopes for Frozen 2 Setting

Since this fandom will undoubtedly come out of hibernation now that pre-production is actually underway here’s my hopes for the setting of the sequel.

Something I’d personally like to see more of in Frozen 2 is The Southern Isles and its royal family.
I want to meet all twelve of Hans’s older brothers and his parents. I want them all to have fleshed out personalities and unique character designs. I think there’s a story there that’s worth telling and one that can transition nicely into what we’ve already been told.

For the record I don’t count A Frozen Heart by Elizabeth Rudnick as canon. It was a half-hearted and contemptuous attempt on Hans’s family. I don’t think I’ll ever get over her poor choice of names for some of them like Runo and Caleb. Did she even try?
What I consider canon is what’s written and created at the Disney Animation Studios by JLee and CBuck. *sigh*

So ignoring that rendition…
I would like to see Frozen 2 take place in a setting that is new but not entirely foreign to the audience. The Southern Isles offers such a golden opportunity; not only in its setting but also with its introduction to new characters without the obscure explanations. The Southern Isles and Hans’s family was one of the more curious aspects of the original and to not elaborate on it would be a waste.

I also don’t think bringing in an entirely new villain to wreck havoc on Arendelle - especially one with powers - would be at all interesting. It’d be expected and boring to keep the entire film in Arendelle and just have the gang battle it out with a fire witch or some nonsense like that.

The best thing the writers could do is take the curious elements from the story they already have such as the trolls, foreign affairs, that archaic book and elaborate on those instead. Make it all come full circle but by also tying it back to the original HCA’s version instead of creating completely new content that’ll only confuse the audience even more.

So those are my thoughts on the setting and how it could work with the story. Agree or disagree? What are your wishes for the setting of Frozen 2?
